BACK TO THE FUTURE: DECADENT AUTUMN HUES WITH A MODERN TWIST Interiors will look to a fusion of modern and heritage this Autumn with a combination of deep and decadent traditional hues re- energized by a splash of brighter colour. A collection of luxurious browns, earthy greens and salmon comprises the Colour Trends for Autumn 2016, according to Dulux. The Dulux Autumn palette, inspired by the Future Past theme from the 2016 Dulux Colour Trends, “Design Age”, showcases opulence and classicism with a contemporary twist. It celebrates a return to fine craftsmanship and detail, with minimalism nowhere to be seen. Taking its cues from Steampunk references merging with modern design, the Future Past trend celebrates a new version of the old. Dulux Colour Expert, Andrea Lucena-Orr, says the key hues of Autumn, including Dulux Pickled, Pretty Primrose and Loose Leather, reveal an underlying earthy palette with a refreshing colourful twist. “The 2016 Autumn palette can be seen to comprise stronger hues, but don’t be afraid to add a darker colour into your home. The warmth these colours can add will transform any space and make it feel more inviting and snug, creating a cosy room to cocoon in during the colder seasons,” says Andrea. With such decadent hues on offer this Autumn, bold patterns and luxurious accessories are complimentary to the colour scheme. To achieve the Future Past trend, balance the Autumn colours with antiques, heirlooms and décor in a modern setting. “Strong blues and indigo elements work especially well with the 2016 Autumn palette. For a more neutral scheme, these colours can be accessorised with stark white items to achieve a striking contrast. “For those wishing to achieve a more subtle look, the Autumn hues can also be incorporated in smaller volumes,” says Andrea. “Use one of the colours and then layer accessories incorporating natural colours such as whites and neutrals to counterbalance the darker wall colour.” Dulux’s Autumn predictions are the product of research into global design, colour and finishes inspired by trade shows, fashion, technology, and media and trends agencies. Andrea’s top tips for homeowners using colour this Autumn are: “Ensure you love the colours you select for your home, and that the hues you select will work with your space especially with lowering light in Autumn. Also consider the accessories as you move into these colder seasons as they impact the space when you’re creating the overall scheme.” For more colour or painting advice view the Dulux ‘how to projects’ online www.dulux.com.au Follow Dulux on and . – ENDS – For more information, images or interview opportunities contact: Eliza Mielczarek, Communicado T: 03 9522 9906 M: 0413 357 589 E: [email protected] Isobel Loschiavo, Communicado T: 03 9522 9930 M: 0431 960 479 E: [email protected] MEDIA RELEASE | 1 FEBRUARY 2016 WALL LIGHT – PORCELAIN BEAR; FRAMED ART – TUSHKINA; LUCITE SHELVES & BRASS ANTLER – COCO REPUBLIC; CANDELABRA & CANDLE HOLDER – TOM DIXON; BRASS PLANTER – JARDAN; TIMBER HOOK – ZUSTER; RUG – DESIGNER RUGS; ARMCHAIR – CURIOUS GRACE PHOTOGRAPHER: MIKE BAKER.

“Use one of the colours and then layer accessories incorporating natural colours such as whites and neutrals to counterbalance the darker wall colour.”

HOW TO: CREATE A DIAGONAL WALL DESIGN

1. Like any paint job you’ll need your usual drop sheet, masking tape and brushes. However because we’recreating a diagonal line you’ll also need a HB pencil, aneraser, calculator and measuring tape.

2. Before you begin putting paint to plaster it’s a good ideato visualise your design first. For best results, plan your look taking into account furniture and art in the room because this will help inform your decision.

3. To make life easier, paint the entire wall in your lightestcolour first. For step-by-step instructions on how to mask, cut and lay-off your wall refer to our ‘How to paint walls’instructions at www.dulux.com.au/advice.

4. Using the tape that is masking the trim, mark where youwould like your diagonal line to start and finish. Once you are happy with these points use string and get someoneto help by holding it taut at each end, lining up with thestart and finish for your diagonal line - now mark this atincrements along your wall. You could also use chalk line– this is an effective way to mark the diagonal line on thewall making it very easy to then mask it.

5. Now you’re ready to mask your line. It helps to havesomeone holding the tape taut from one end as youline it up with the increments you’ve marked out. Don’tforget, your tape must line up to the outside of yourdesign - It seems obvious but it’s an easy mistake tomake. Press your tape with a putty knife to prevent paintbleeding through.

6. Now for the fun part. Grab your brush or roller and beginpainting your secondary coat of paint.

7. Paint the second colour in your design. Once your secondcoat is completely dry, carefully remove your tape at a 45degree angle to prevent paint from peeling. If you noticeany bleeds from underneath your tape you can easilypatch it up with a fine brush.

8. Now all that’s left to do is tidy up and invite your friendsover to admire your new look.

STYLE TIPS FOR AUTUMN 2016 BY BREE LEECH, CREATIVE CONSULTANT AND STYLIST FOR DULUX

Future Past harnesses the art of mixing old and new as well as referencing various design eras – here’s some tips on how to achieve this trend at home:

• Celebrate antiques, heirlooms and traditional décorin a modern setting – update older pieces with newfinishes such as upholstery in bold colour or pattern,or a coat of paint to add a modern colour twist.

• Feature art with traditional subject matter, such asportraits or landscapes, in a contemporary settingagainst on trend colour. Alternatively, feature modernart against traditional architectural features suchas wall panelling, dado rails or elaborate crownmouldings.

• The trick to mixing old and new is balance – forevery feature from the past counterbalance it with amodern reference, material or colour.

• Choose a feature piece that conveys the trend - art isa perfect way to do this but you could also feature amodern chandelier or wall light for example.

• Colour can be traditional (such as deep moody hues)or create a modern backdrop for your new heirloompieces using striking colour combinations such aspink and green in a graphic design.
