“What must I do to be saved?”

• For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. Matt 16:26-27 (NKJV)

• In this lesson we will learn…– Why Christ died for us.– What we must do to be saved by God’s grace.

Page 3: Back to the Basics “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”

Salvation is God’s desire for all men (1Tim. 2:4-6)!

• The provision of salvation is solely by God’s grace, Ephesians 2:4, 6– Why did Christ have to die? That God might be JUST,

Romans 3:26.– The just penalty for sin is death, Genesis 2:17. Ezekiel

18:20; Romans 6:23. Justice demands death for all who have sinned.

– All men have sinned, Isaiah 59:1-2; Romans 3:23, 5:12.– God so loved us that He gave His only begotten Son to

die for our sins, John 3:16; Romans 5:6-11; Isaiah 53:1-7.

Page 4: Back to the Basics “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”

Salvation is God’s desire for all men (1Tim. 2:4-6)!

• Salvation is not by grace “ONLY”.– If it were, then all should be saved, Acts 10:34;

Romans 2:11.• God wants all to be saved, 2 Peter 3:9; 1Timothy 2:4.• Christ died for all men, 1Timothy 2:6

– But all men will not be saved, Matthew 7:13-14.– The dividing line between lost and saved is man’s

part, which is faith, John 8:24; Hebrews 11:6.– Grace teaches obedient faith, Titus 2:11-14

Page 5: Back to the Basics “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”

Salvation is God’s desire for all men (1Tim. 2:4-6)!

• God is the JUSTIFIER of believers, Romans 3:26– We are saved by grace through faith, Ephesians 2:8;

Romans 3:24-25.– Salvation cannot be earned by meritorious works of

either…• The Law of Moses (Romans 3:28)• Our own righteousness (Romans 10:3; Titus 3:5)

– We must have an obedient faith to walk with our Savior, Hebrews 5:8-9. Christ Himself described this kind of faith as a “work of God”, John 6:29.

Page 6: Back to the Basics “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”

Salvation is God’s desire for all men (1Tim. 2:4-6)!

• Salvation is not by faith “only”.– Saving faith is a faith that obeys God, James 2:14, 17,

24.– Those with faith only will be lost, John 12:42-43;

James 2:19– By obedient faith we become servants of

righteousness, Romans 6:17-18, as we walk in the works God ordained, Ephesians 2:10.

Page 7: Back to the Basics “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”

Salvation is God’s desire for all men (1Tim. 2:4-6)!

• Grace and faith illustrated in Israel’s deliverance from Egypt.– By grace – Israel did not escape by their own

strength.– By faith – They obeyed a “work of God” by sprinkling

the blood, Exodus 12:3-14; Hebrews 11:28.• Were they safe after the lamb was slain?• Or because they “trusted” in the Lord only?• They were safe only when by faith they obeyed, Exodus

12:20-30!

Page 8: Back to the Basics “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”

When do we apply the atoning blood of Christ?

• If saved, it must be through His blood.– For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many

for the remission of sins. Matt 26:28 (NKJV)– and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the

dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, Rev 1:5 (NKJV)

• Baptism is said to accomplish the same. – Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be

baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38 (NKJV)

– And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.' Acts 22:16 (NKJV)

• Result of Baptism– For the remission of sins, Acts 2:38• Parallel statement with Matthew 26:28• Sins are washed away, Acts 22:16; 1Peter 3:21

– Puts one into Christ, Galatians 3:27; Romans 6:3; 1 Corinthians 12:13

– It is the new birth, John 3:5; Romans 6:4• Remission of sins is nowhere taught as preceding

this.

Page 12: Back to the Basics “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”

Baptism revealed in the New Testament

• Things which must precede and join with baptism.– Receiving the word, Romans 10:17; 6:17-18; Acts

2:41– Believing Christ is the Son of God, Acts 8:12; Mark

16:16– Confession of this belief, Acts 8:35-38; Romans 10:10– Repentance, Luke 13:3; Acts 2:38

• Infants can do none of these.

Page 13: Back to the Basics “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”

Baptism revealed in the New Testament

• Significance of baptism– Puts us into the death of Christ, hence into His blood,

Romans 6:3.– Buried with Christ, Romans 6:4.– Raised together with Him, Colossians 2:12• Salvation based on the resurrection of Christ, 1 Peter 3:21.• We also rise to walk in a newness of life, Romans 6:4-11.

• Sprinkling gives no likeness to the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.

Page 14: Back to the Basics “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”

Baptism revealed in the New Testament

• Only “one baptism” for men today, Ephesians 4:5– It does make a difference how/when/why we are

baptized, Luke 6:46.• If we were not baptized in the manner by Christ,

then we should be baptized again, Acts 19:1-7.

Page 15: Back to the Basics “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”

“What must I do to be saved?”

• If when baptized, you…– Put on Christ (Galatians 3:27)– Wash away your sins (Acts 22:16)– Have remission of sins (Acts 2:38)– Are made free from sin (Romans 6:17-18)– Benefit by Jesus’ death (Romans 6:3-4)– Enter the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13)

• Then…– What is your condition WITHOUT (Scriptural)

baptism?
