Back to School Night

Oakridge Elementary

First Grade

Welcome to First Grade!

Mrs. Hughes

• University of Arkansas, Master of Arts in Teaching

Our Schedule

3 hours per day of literacy (phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and writing)

30-45 minutes per day for science or social studies

1 hour per day of math

Specials Schedule

• Monday: Library (checkout) and P.E.• Tuesday: Art• Wednesday: Music• Thursday: Music and P.E.• Friday: Library and P.E.

Please return all library books on Mondays.

Please make sure your student wears comfortable shoes on P.E. days.

Language Arts

• Morning Meeting and Shared Reading (fluency)• Guided Reading/Daily 5• Comprehension lesson• Guided Reading/Daily 5• Phonics/Phonemic Awareness• Guided Reading/Daily 5• Vocabulary

*Writing is part of the Language Arts curriculum, but Writer’s Workshop occurs in the afternoon.

Morning Meeting& Shared Reading

We meet together on the carpet.

Guided Reading

• We meet together in small groups throughout the morning.

• The students each receive explicit reading instruction on their individual readiness level.

Word Study

• Grouped based on individual Developmental Assessment Score

• Will work on 1 sort per week

• Will learn to spell and write 8 high frequency (sight) words per week

Writing

We have writer’s workshop daily.

• Workshop Model:– Mini-lesson– Independent work time – Author Share Time

Math

• Investigations Curriculum Units to Be Taught:– How many of each?– Making Shapes and Designing Quilts– Solving Story Problems– What would you rather be?– Fish Lengths and Animal Jumps– Number Games and Crayon Puzzles– Color, Shape and Number Patterns– Twos, Fives and Tens– Blocks and Boxes

Science

• Units to Be Taught:– Motion– Matter– Plants– Animals– Sun and Earth– Seasons and Weather– Conservation

Social Studies

• Units to Be Taught:– Civics– Past and Present– Geography– EconomicsThe organizing theme for grade 1 is environment. Students will learn that

environments:• describe times (periods), place and events.• define human and physical actions related to locations and climate.• explain change in self, families, schools, and communities.• determine how people make choices, save money, become buyers and

sellers, and use resources.• explain actions related to citizenship, traditions, and governments.

Homework

Homework is given nightly Monday-Thursday.

• Math: Students will complete one brief math assignment related to our lesson in class.

• Reading: Students will read nightly to or with someone.

Homework is checked for completion only.

Fluency Folder

This folder will contain copies of songs and poems we sing/read together in the mornings as part of our Morning Meeting and Shared Reading time. This folder is to stay in the child’s backpack unless it is in use.

Technology

Available Technology:

– 3 computers for student use in our classroom

– Computer lab for student use

– Document camera and projector in classroom

– SMART Board

Classroom Management

• Oakridge 3 T’s:– We take care of ourselves.– We take care of each other.– We take care of this place.

Students earn class rewards by filling the marble cup (being on task, following directions quickly, compliments etc.).

Students earn individual recognition by displaying exceptional 3 T behavior (following directions quickly, being kind to classmates, staying on task, keeping classroom tidy, etc.)

Lunch

• 11:35-12:00 Please feel free to join your child for lunch.

• Please use School Bucks to put money in your child’s lunch account.

Field Trips

• November: Claude Moore Colonial Farm

• February: Mt. Vernon

• May: National Building Museum

• TBD: Arlington Public Schools Planetarium

Trips are tentative and are subject to change.

Volunteerism

The PTA is in search of a parent to be our room parent coordinator. If you’re interested please let me know and I can give Lisa Reppert your information.

Birthdays

You are welcome to bring a treat for the class to celebrate your child’s birthday.

Birthday celebrations take place at 3:15 on Mon., Tues., Thurs., and Fri. On Wed. we celebrate birthdays at 1:00.
