Volunteer Requirements (2018-2019)

All MCPS volunteers and contractors are required to complete mandatory Online Training: Recognition, and Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect. ● The module is available on the MCPS Child Abuse and Neglect

webpage.● Online training videos are available in English and 5 other

languages● Volunteers should print verification e-mail that they receive upon

completion of the training and present it to the school at which they wish to volunteer.

● Volunteers may not interact with students until the training has been completed and verified by school staff members.

● The school’s volunteer liaison should keep a copy of all volunteer training verification e-mails.

Volunteer Requirements (continued) (2018-2019)Beginning 2017-2018 school year, volunteers will need to complete the child abuse and neglect training at least once every three years to continue volunteering. If volunteering training was taken in: 2016-2017 renew in 2020-2021 2017-2018 renew in 2020-2021 2018-2019 renew in 2021-2022The following MCPS volunteers are required to undergo fingerprinting and background checks:● Volunteer coaches;● Overnight chaperones for the Outdoor Environmental Education

Programs (OEEP);● Overnight field trip chaperones;● Volunteers on field trips that require approval from the Office of School

Support and Improvement (OSSI); and ● Volunteers with unsupervised, direct access to students.

Homework Policy• Homework and projects are extensions of school

instruction. Homework is part of your child’s task completion grade on the report card.

• There will be daily homework

• Calendar/HW journal- 9/17

• Homework journal should be kept at home unless stated on the homework calendar that it should be brought in to be checked.

• Homework journals will be turned in at the end of the month.

• Other homework assignments may be added (projects, etc)

Words Their Way● Inquiry-based, cooperative learning approach to

spelling/vocabulary● Differentiated by stages of spelling (based on

pre-assessment)● Sorting: students sort words noticing spelling/sound

patterns (badge vs. page)● Hunting: students hunt for words in text that follow the

bi-weekly pattern● Spelling/meaning connection: roots, word families, etc.

***At this time there will not be nightly word study homework. Based on the needs of our students as the year goes on it could become part of our homework***

Agendas• All homework assignments will be

recorded daily.

• A responsible caregiver is expected to

review all completed homework

assignments EACH NIGHT.

• Parents can also use the agenda book

to communicate with CGES staff.
