AACCAADDEEMMIICC && RREESSEEAARRCCHH EEXXPPEERRIIEENNCCEE 2004-Present Professor in Residence and Interim Director of the Structural Engineering Testing Hall (SETH), Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, University of California, Irvine, California. Duties include developing externally funded research projects and advising both undergraduate and graduate research students and generating sponsored research program from both governmental and private organizations. The main focus of the research is in advanced structural systems, seismic repair and rehabilitation of structures, health monitoring and smart structural systems. Currently involved in several sponsored research programs dealing with innovative structural systems. The first research project involved both analytical and experimental evaluation of scarifying impact protection system for reinforced concrete highway bridge girders. The innovative aluminum sandwich system was developed; manufactured and finite element simulation was conducted prior to the full-scale testing which is in progress. The second research project deals with the development of a smart repair kit and Diagnostic/Prognostic System (DPS) that utilize advanced remote sensing methodology to monitor the repaired composite assault bridges. Both virtual and laboratory tests are being conducted. Advanced optical fiber sensors and MEMS will be utilized in developing the smart repair technology for the US Army. Another pioneering testing program focusing on evaluating both the cyclic and quasi-static flexural behavior of recycled plastic piles reinforced with fiber reinforced polymer E-glass/epoxy rebars is underway. 1995- 2003 Director, Structural Repair and Rehabilitation of Structures Center, California State University at Fullerton: Duties include directing research and development activities, with a main focus on performance of new systems for repair and rehabilitation of bridges and other structures. Developing externally funded multidisciplinary research projects. Directs and involves in developing new innovative system, and development of design and materials acceptance criteria for new system with focus on polymer composites for infrastructure applications. Duties also include, advising and directing graduate and undergraduate student research projects. creep behavior of reinforced concrete beam-to-column connections. The project was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). A pilot research study on creep and creep rupture of axial and flexural R/C members retrofitted with composite laminates is in progress since 1998. June 1993- July 1995 Associate Professor, Civil, Mechanical and Environmental Engineering Department, George Washington University (GWU), Washington, D.C. Duties include teaching graduate and undergraduate structures and mechanics courses for civil engineering students. Supervising and advising graduate and undergraduate research students. Duties included developing externally funded research projects. Developed and directed several research programs on the structural behavior of polymer composites. A project involving both experimental and theoretical studies on developing test standards for biaxial testing of sandwich plates with aluminum honeycomb core and graphite/epoxy face sheets has been conducted through a funded project by NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center. The experimental work involved uniaxial testing of different composites coupon specimen, as well as developing test fixture and methodology for biaxial testing of composites plates. Conducted theoretical and numerical analysis on the predicting the ultimate behavior of sandwich composite panels. Duties also included teaching advanced courses on mechanics and design of composites materials and systems. These courses were taught as a part of the George Washington University special Master's Program at NASA Goddard Space Center, Greenbelt, Maryland. July 1991- May 1993 Visiting Assistant Professor, Civil, Mechanical and Environmental Engineering Department, George Washington University (GWU). Duties included teaching and developing undergraduate structural analysis and design courses. Instructor, ASCE CI Training Course on Seismic Repair of Structures Using FRP Composites, January 2007 in Irvine, California, February 2007 in New York City, April, 2006 in Cincinnati, Ohio and August 2006 in Nashville: This design course is the first national design course officially offered by the American Society of civil Engineers (ASCE) that aims at educating structural engineer with design and analytical procedures for FRP composites repair systems fro concrete, masonry, wood and steel structures. Expert and Structural Advisor, Multnomah County, Oregon. Involved in the advising and reviewing the structural design of composite repair system for the Broadway Sidewalk and Lighting Replacement. The rehabilitation system was carbon/epoxy composites and was mainly to upgrade the torsional capacity of a group of cantilever reinforced girders up to 203 in-kips. Team Member, Boeing Company, Long Beach, California: This Task Force was created in January 2000 by Boeing Company to establish a new division for composite bridges. The team is currently working in developing two prototypes of all-composite highway and military bridges. Structural Bridge Consultant for Prince George’s County, Maryland the consulting work involved structural inspection, evaluation, and design recommendations for the Wheeler Road Roadway Bridge. The bridge is H20 R/C culvert which was constructed in the early 1900's (1900-1910). Both super and substructure were suffering from deterioration and corrosion. The posted load was 12 tons at 25 mph. Different solutions were presented to rehabilitate the Roadway Bridge. Structural Consultant, Fluor Daniel, Irvine, California. The work involved preparation of engineering reports, which include the required engineering information for preparing of bid documents for the MIDOR Oil Refinery Project in the Industrial Free Zone, Alexandria, Egypt. The project is a multi-millions dollars Egyptian/Israeli/USA Joint venture. The consulting work included preparation of four technical engineering reports describing the industrial facilities, local materials and services, and the structural requirements according to the Egyptian design codes. This includes the seismic, wind, mechanical, electrical, and environmental Egyptian standards. The reports also included a survey on the available local resources, including materials, equipment, and certified contractors in different areas. Subcontractor, American Society of Civil Engineers/Pultrusion Industry Council (ASCE/PIC) Standards Project, Washington, D.C. Acted as the technical consultant through a subcontract with the project’s general contractor. The general contractor of this project was Chambers Engineering, p.c., Canton, Massachusetts. This project is the first phase of a multi-phase national project to develop design standards, and specifications for structural plastics and composites for civil engineering applications. The duties also included the development of a database containing the available state-of-the-art research work in this area. The technical information included in the data reviewed, analyzed and evaluated. The work also involved the development of the outlines and identification and description of subjects and topics for each chapter of the ASCE standard document. In addition, a chapter on Design Standards of Composite Connections was prepared.

Subcontractor, University of New Orleans, Mechanical Engineering Department, New Orleans, Louisiana, Acted as a subcontractor for the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of New Orleans. The project was a part of a multidisciplinary research project funded by the US Navy. The work included developing theoretical models to characterize the creep behavior of thick composites under fire environment. During the course of this work, a comprehensive database was developed on the subject. Simplified viscoelastic Moduli were developed. The results of this study were presented, in the form of two technical joint papers, at the Third International Conference on Composite Engineering (ICCE/3). Technical Advisor, University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida. The project is sponsored by the US Army to develop light-weigh shelters for disaster areas. The duty includes structural analysis including wind, optimization and development of the modular housing unites. Engineering Advisor, Royal Prince Turki Bin Abdullah Al Saud: Acted as the Engineering Advisor for two major projects owned by the Crown Prince Family. The first project is the construction of a secured village composed of 1,800 houses and its infrastructures for housing US Army personnel in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia (total construction cost is $1.4 billion dollars. The second project is the construction of Sheraton Hotel to be built on an artificial island in the Parisian Gulf. The total budget is $800 million dollars. Structural Expert, Pultrusion Industry Council (PIC) Design Manual Project, The Composites Institute, Society of Plastics Industry, New York, New York. Duties included the establishment of the outlines of the PIC Structural Design Manual. Composite Structures Expert, University of New Orleans, LA. Acted as a subcontractor to perform theoretical and finite element modeling of E-glass/vinyl ester panels under elevated temperature and fire environment. The work involved time- and temperature-dependent characterization and prediction of both strength and stiffness degradation of the material under fire environment. The work is a part of a general contract funded by the US Navy.

Bridge Engineering Advisor, Ministry of Transportation, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The work involved direct contact with Saudi Arabia Secretary of Transportation, Dr. Naser Al-Saloum in developing different repair and rehab strategy for the highway bridges in the Kingdom. A comprehensive site survey for several highway bridges in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom was conducted. This included field testing, structural evaluation reports, as well as recommendations for repair methods including high performance composite materials.
