Award in Lipid Chemistry ' esented Stumpf r to .,,.-.

P.K. Stumpf, winner of the Award in Lipid Chemistry , was presented a check for $2500 by Waldo C. Ault , consul tant , Applied Science Laborator ies , State College, Pa., at the recent 48 th Annual Fall Meeting.

In presenting the check to S tumpf , Adul t expressed the Laborator ies ' conf idence tha t , "a few dollars will encourage and facil i tate y o u r research."

The Award, presented to an outs tanding scientist in the field of l ipid chemist ry , is f inanced by Applied Science Laborator ies and adminis tered by AOCS. Established in

1964, the Award in Lipid Chemist ry recognizes the accompl i shment of outs tanding original research in lipid chemistry , the results of which have been presented

through publ icat ion o f technical papers of high qual i ty . Preference is given to those act ively associated wi th research in l ipid chemis t ry who have made fundamenta l discoveries that affect large segments o f the lipid field.

S tumpf ' s major discoveries and advances in knowledge in the areas of fa t ty acid biosynthesis and desaturat ion and of ~-oxidat ion and /3-oxidation in a whole range of plant systems have affected a large part of the lipid field.

More specificaUy, his b iosynthet ic studies have a growing impor tance and relevance in these days o f food raw mater ials ' shortages and increasing dependence upon plant products as a source o f these raw materials, part icularly o f fats and oils. Also, his original studies on lipid ox ida t ion pa thways already have led to the recogni t ion of the b iochemical def iciency responsible for the disease k n o w n as Refsum's syndrome.

S tumpf graduated magna cure laude f rom Harvard University. He received his Ph.D. f rom Columbia Universi ty in 1945. The au thor of ca. 150 articles in the lipid chemistry and biochemis t ry field, he is cur rent ly ed i tor of Journal o f P h y t o c h e m i s t r y and Ana ly t i ca l B i o c h e m i s t r y .

In addi t ion to being a member of AOCS, he is a member o f the Amer ican Chemical Society, American Socie ty o f Biological Chemistry , Amer ican Socie ty o f Plant Physiol- ogists, Biochemical Society of London , and Sigma Xi.

S tumpf is the e leventh winner of the Award in Lipid Chemistry. Previous winners were: Erich Baer, Ernest Klenk, H.E. Carter, Sune Bergstrom, Daniel Swern, H.J. Dut ton , E.P. Kennedy, E.S. Lut ton , A.T. James, and F.D. Gunstone. •
