Award in Lipid Chemistry Presented to E. P. The .&ward is sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. A. Rose, of Applied Science Laboratories. This year, winner of the Award was E. P. Kennedy, Hamilton Kuhn Professor of Biological Chemistry, Harvard Medical School. The Award was presented at the ISF-AOCS Meeting by W. C. Ault, of Applied Science Laboratories, who made the following remarks. "Professor Kennedy, Dr. Chang, Mem- bers of the ISF and of the AOCS, Friends: I bring to you, Professor Kennedy, not only the check for the AOCS Award, but also Greetings from Dr. and Mrs. Rose of the Applied Science Laboratories, Inc., donors of the cash award. The Roses could not be at this meeting and make the presentation themselves and therefore have asked me to represent the Applied Science laboratories here. This I do with pleasure, and since you cannot meet them here, I am sure that you would like to learn a bit about the wonderful people who are making this generous cash award possible. Dr. and Mrs. Rose both hold earned graduate degrees in science from the UnNersity of Cincinnati. Most of their lives both have been associated with research dealing primarily with the separation and purification of organic compounds. Hence, they have developed a strong sense of appreciation for basic scientific research. Under their leadership, Applied Science is a small company devoted to the development, preparation and sale of tools used in difficult separations and in identification and quantification of the separated components. In this context it is not so surprising that this Award for excellence in research in fat.s and oils would have originated with them. After one knows the Roses it is not even surprising that the Award began at a time when the sum of money donated was a significant fraction of the annual net income of the company. Dr. Kennedy, I congratulate you and trust that this brief statement about the donors will increase your appreciation of the value and spirit of the Award represented by this check." E. P. Kennedy, presently holding a professorship at Harvard Medical School, received a B.S. degree from DePaul University in 1941 and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago in 1949. He has been a member of the Abstracts Committee for over 20 years, and has served as Chairman for the past 16 years. He has been Secretary, Vice President, and President of the North Central Section of the Society, our hosts for this World Congress in Chicago. He was General Chairman of the AOCS Meeting here in Chicago in 1967.
