BASF, Petronas lay foundation stone for aroma ingredients complex BASF SE is erecting its first aroma materials complex outside Germany to meet rising demand in APAC. The plant will be built with Petronas at Gebeng near Kuantan, Malaysia [see also Focus on Surfactants, Jul 2013]. The 60:40 joint venture BASF Petronas Chemicals has now laid the foundation stone for the complex, which is expected to cost Ringgit 1.5 bn (c $500 M) and create around 120 jobs. An engineering, procurement and construction management contract has been awarded to US- based Fluor Corp. The first units could go on stream in 2016, producing 30,000 tonnes/y of citral, 9000 tonnes/y of L-menthol and 8000 tonnes/y of citronellol. The products are used mainly in home and personal care products and fine fragrances, as well as in the food industry and in pharmaceutical applications. Recently, Avon’s competitors have adopted cosmetic chemical safety standards that exceed existing federal regulations. Notably, Johnson & Johnson announced in 2012 [Focus on Surfactants, Nov 2012] that it would eliminate chemicals of concern, including triclosan, from baby and adult products.
