Facing pressure from shareholdersand consumers, Avon has announcedthat it will phase out triclosan from itsbeauty and personal care products.Triclosan is commonly used as anantimicrobial agent in colourcosmetics, creams, shaving products, detergents, toothpastes andantibacterial soaps, but has beenlinked to hormone disruption and theemergence of antibiotic-resistantbacteria. Recently, Avon’scompetitors have adopted cosmeticchemical safety standards thatexceed existing federal regulations.Notably, Johnson & Johnsonannounced in 2012 [Focus onSurfactants, Nov 2012] that it wouldeliminate chemicals of concern, including triclosan, from baby andadult products. In Sep 2013, Procter& Gamble announced it wouldeliminate triclosan and the phthalateDEP from all products by 2014.

New introductions at in-cosmetics2014
At in-cosmetics 2014 in Hamburg,Germany, Berg + Schmidt (B+S)presented its portfolio of cosmeticsraw materials. B+S has addedhydrolysed lyso-lecithin and hydratedlecithin, two innovative, high-qualitylecithin fractions, to its BergaMulsproduct line. These products arenatural emulsifiers for manyapplications. B+S also presented thenew environment-friendly ergaScrubproduct range, which allowsmanufacturers to formulate withoutsynthetic polyethylene (PE) beads asscrub particles. Lipo Chemicals alsoexhibited natural physical exfoliantsthat are said to offer ‘great options’ forPE bead replacement. Desert WhaleJojoba Co’s Jojoba Scrubeads, created from a combination of castoroil and jojoba wax, are a natural, affordable alternative to PE beads. They are ideal for formulations thatrequire higher mixing temperatures,as their melting point is between 82-90°C, being above that of a traditionalwax sphere. Jojoba Spheres, madewith hydrogenated jojoba oil, are apremier exfoliant derived from fullyhydrogenated jojoba wax in aperfectly spherical shape. Thesespheres are available in a wide rangeof colours and sizes. The meltingpoint range is 68-70°C. Oil-free jojoba(OFJ) spheres, made with jojobaesters, allow the formulator to get thesame benefit of jojoba sphereswithout having oil in the name. Themelting point range for these spheresis 66-70°C. Lipo VI is a uniqueexfoliating ingredient produced by thecontrolled grinding of the seeds of theEcuadorian ivory palm, Phytelephasaequatoralis, and is available in two
