It’s an insult to genuine love and romance. Hope that wasn’t too harsh to those of you who have fallen for a universal marketing scheme. Let’s be real, showing affection for one another has drastically changed over the decades. We have seemed to forget that

there are 364 other days to celebrate love. But it’s this one day out of the year, February 14th, which has

women making excuses to get pampered. However, most of you do not have a bleeding

clue how this so called holiday

came to be.The 14th day of February isn’t a celebration of anything. The significance is simply a bland fact: St Valentine died on this date in the North of Rome. Where does the whole hoopla about love come from? We’ll have to thank Mr Geoffrey Chaucer, “the father of English literature,” for inventing such a farce on romance. Thanks, Jeff, but we’ll stick to your Canterbury Tales. And centuries later, we are left with swooning women obtaining pleasure from chocolates and flowers. There are no enemies of love here, only the truth.Whatever happened to just calling someone randomly only to say, “I love you,” or bringing flowers to your beloved out of the blue just because you felt like it? The days of taking the time to write

a romantic letter are sadly gone. We’ve substituted great penmanship for a quick fix touch screen. Shouldn’t we value the proper tradition of love? Be it a man or woman, those little things should be cherished most. We live in a fast paced world, but it’s no excuse to neglect one of the greatest gifts given to mankind. Love is not an emotion, it’s an ability. It’s up to us on how much and how often we use it. Why only recognise such a beautiful gesture on the 14th? You have the entire year to love, you have an entire lifetime for it. For the sake of true romance, let your passions burn hot in your hearts and practice love every day of your lives.

True DetectiveThis is a drama starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Promising to be one the most revolutionary TV series, True Detective focuses on two detectives that investigate the murder of a woman. The episodes are ripe with disturbing violence, brooding philosophical backdrops and a freshness one feels that is almost guilty to enjoy.

A Little PrincessA 1905 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, A Little Princess depicts the story of Sarah Crewe, a wealthy British man’s daughter. She is sent to boarding school in London, since her father does not want her to live with him as he’s attending to business in India. She’s treated as a star pupil by her peers and teachers, as they both envy and secretly despise her for her wealth. Things take a drastic turn when her father dies and she is left a penniless, orphaned beggar.

Dallas Buyers ClubMatthew McConaughey plays the role of Ron Woodroof, a Texan cowboy who’s diagnosed with AIDS in 1985. Given only 30 days to live, the movie traces his struggle as he looks for different ways to fight a lone battle against this disease. Not having any government approved medicine to aid him, he smuggles in drugs and distributes them to his followers, finally establishing the “Dallas Buyers Club.” The movie has six pending Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor.

Those who have used the recently updated and redesigned weather app, Dark Sky, will know how frighteningly accurate it is. The original version of the app was quite simple; it told you the weather with pinpoint accuracy. It was limited, which wasn’t different from any other in the market. In the recent upgrade, it’s been given some much needed expensitions. After two years (yes, two), the developers have hit the right spot and have put Dark Sky at the top. Users can expect a 24-hour and next week forecasts in the new additions. It also has the “feels like” temperature feature. This should sound familiar, as there are other weather apps that boast the “real feel” number. It’s not only the features that impress; the app has been totally changed to suit the new iOS 7 design. This gives way to its maps and radar features that feel effortlessly smooth. Spinning a globe with a spectrum of hues in temperature actually turns out to be fun. However, let’s remind ourselves that this isn’t a game.Dark Sky is as serious as its name. When people say it’s scary, they are referring

to its data delivery. The app will let you know exactly when it will rain. What you can expect in the next hour and how heavy it will pour. It’s what their website suggests. It’s your own weather station. And for 3.99USD for new users, it better deliver. There are fantastic alternatives out there, but with its beautiful interface and detailed features, it’s worth the download. Unfortunately, this is only available for the iPhone and iPad. The company hasn’t released any news of Dark Sky being available for other platforms but do keep an eye out in case the developers come up with a version for your phone.

Love is in the airLet’s sheath our swords, geek warriors of tech. Let’s set our loyalties and biased opinions aside and marvel at the best tablet around. The Apple iPad Air is the finest full-size tablet that you can hold and it makes a very lovely gift for your significant other on the Valentine’s Day. If you have an Apple account, you should have already received an e-mail advertising this beauty for the day of lovers. It’s a much skinnier and a lighter version of Apple’s tablets, yet it’s more powerful. It’s at the top of the mountain in every which way. Beautifully redesigned, with its improved front-facing camera and Retina Display, the iPad Air is the perfect device for any user. From beginners to tech aficionados, you will be pleased to know that the tablet weighs just a bit over a pound (1.05lbs or 478g). It fits comfortably in the hands while you view its 9.7-inch display. Let’s not forget about the performance. The new dual-core, 64-bit A7 CPU is leading the new generation of tablets. It is, for the lack of a better term, ridiculously fast. You would think the battery would take a beating with such a powerful device.

Your assumptions would be wrong. Apple promises 10 hours of battery life, and of course, it delivers. In moderate use, you’ll be able to use the Air for a little over 13 hours without charging it. Have a late night Skype date or FaceTime sessions scheduled with your significant other? No problem.

style like never seen before. The body lines flow smoothly to the back of the car with entirely redesigned backlights and a sharp edged and curvy trunk door.

InteriorOn the inside, the Camry speaks volumes of sophistication in design and richness of elegance. Every single inch of this car is crafted for excellence. It seems like that Toyota is after all intending to go head-to-head with the leading luxury brands. Not only that, the Camry is on a mission to lead that line. The interior is dual-tone and kitted out with complete fabric or leather seats combining comfort and lavishness all together. The dashboard features smart curves and edges that sleekly combine the centre console and the driver instrument panel into one marvellous piece of car architecture. The multimedia system and the air-conditioning in the Camry entirely rejuvenate the liveliness of this car.

PerformanceThe performance of the 2013 Toyota Camry is equally compelling and exciting. It is available in two engines, the base being the 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine that pumps in 178HP into its power veins.

The other engine is the souped-up 3.5-litre V6 engine, generating 268HP of power. It is available with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. However, the V6 versions are all-wheel drive.

SafetyCombined with its looks and performance is its highly recommended safety features. Antilock brakes and brake assist with stability control are standard in all Toyota cars. The Toyota Camry also combines the front and back seat airbags, side curtain airbags and front passenger knee airbags. The structure of this car has been made to help it restrain collisions to a large extent.

Overall, the 2013 Toyota Camry still isn’t the kind of car that raises your heartbeat. But it is competent in every other way and just right for a driver who doesn’t want to be involved any more than is absolutely necessary. As the Camry’s phenomenal sales record shows, there are a lot of those drivers out there. The new Camry should make them happier than they’ve been in a long time.

The 2013 Toyota Camry carries on a long-standing tradition of giving buyers exactly what they want. The exterior of the Toyota Camry seems to be precisely sculpted out to define class and elegance, and its interior combines comfort and spaciousness that are indeed admirable. Impressive engine to give adequate performance, brilliant safety features and implementation of cutting-edge technology are what really make the 2013 Toyota Camry mark its territory in quality luxury cars. Yes, there are more stylish and more entertaining family sedans in the market, but few rival the Camry’s long-standing reputation for value and bulletproof reliability. The Camry is available in four trims with different standard and optional features, giving complete control to the buyers to choose the ride they want.

ExteriorAt first glance, anyone can notice its redesigned headlamps that are, without a doubt, unlike any others, representing elegance and arrogance in style. The front grille, accompanied with a curvy bumper, gives it a unique

If you’re a single man and find yourself attending parties for one reason or another, there are always certain individuals you should try to avoid. There are also people you should gravitate towards. For example, very attractive single ladies (queue Beyonce). As tempting as the situation may be, there are certain types of women you are better off avoiding. Sure, they all look pretty, but what lies beneath is a misadventure you’ll regret later.

Centre of attentionThe woman that wants it all. The spotlight is on her and the world is her stage. Confident and proud, there’s nothing that’s going to rain on her parade. Sounds exciting right? Wrong. You’ll be under her shadow the entire time. In her head, she’s Batman and you’re Robin. If you’re picturing a future with her, be prepared to always play second fiddle.

One fine moonlit night, you don on your favourite denim jacket, new loafers and go to dinner with a beautiful princess. The princess throws herself in your arms, looks into your eyes, comes close and…yikes, a burp! Bubble burst? There are all kinds of women in this world and chances are, you will meet a lot of weirdos before you meet the real deal. One blind date gone wrong in the process, does not seem like a big sacrifice in the larger scheme of things but how do you get out when your date threatens to destroy your ability to think straight for the next three months? Here’s how.

The clumsy cardWomen are attracted to grace. While it’s excusable if you are naturally not too well-endowed in that area, knocking over the glass of water, thwacking her in the face with your wallet, accidentally-on-purpose drowning the spoon in the soup bowl or spilling the rice over her dress will have her rush for the door in no time.

Mr Bad MannersBasic table manners go a long way to ensuring how fruitful the date is going to be. Wolfing down your meal as if it’s the first sight of food you’ve seen in the past seventeen and a half days, using the wrong spoon, slurping the soup,

The divaThe aroma of arrogance is strong with this one. She has the prospects of starring in a Mean Girls sequel. It’s her way or no way so it’s wise to steer away from this control freak. You try hooking up with her and you can consider yourself her personal caterer. And oh goodness, the tantrums and the mood swings!

She’s too young for you, broThis is possibly the trickiest of the bunch. You know, the young lady that looks around 28. She’s got mature features and a personality to match, but then you find out that she’s only 17. No need to rock the cradle, fellas. Most likely her mom is trying to marry her off and you don’t want to end up babysitting her. Let’s move on.

This is only the beginning, of course. Stick around for part two to get the rest of the roundup of women to avoid at social gatherings.

chewing loudly with your mouth open, coughing with your mouth full, are your tickets to freedom from this creep you’ve landed yourself with.

The toilet runExcusing yourself to go to the toilet, often after making a constipated face before asking to excuse yourself will

have her squirming uncomfortably and you doubling over with laughter in the men’s room. Time it right by choosing to go when she is iterating her favourite childhood memory or something equally important.

Excuse me alreadyUsing bizarre excuses like “I have to

leave, my ex’s dog is in labour” or “I think I should go visit my mom in the prison”, will make it easier for you to bolt out the door while she’s left wondering why your ex’s dog should be so important or why she did not ask you about your mother before. By the time she realises there is no dog or imprisoned mommy, you’ll be halfway home.

Think those fuzzy teddy bears are tacky, but can’t afford to splurge on expensive perfume cologne? How about some cool DIY valentine’s gifts? All you need is an empty glass jar, a few other everyday items, and a little creativity. Avenue T gives you three options Sabrina Fatma Ahmad

DIY

Try Out

Valentine’s Jar-gon

The Jar VaseRemove the labels from an old mayonnaise jar, and use acrylic paint to completely cover the glass. Allow it to dry, and now you have a colourful vase. Fill with real flowers and present it to your sweetie as a spin on the traditional bouquet, or you could get even craftier, and make paper “flowers” using drinking straws and paper cut-outs.

Candy jarsAgain, remove all labels from an old glass jar. Fill the jar with an assortment of candies and sweet treats (making sure they’re not the sticky kind). Cut out a piece of gift-wrapping paper big enough to cover the mouth of the jar. Place over the jar opening, and then secure in place by wrapping a ribbon around it. Use the end of the ribbon to make a bow. Write out your love note on a small, coloured post it, and stick it on the jar. Voila! Personalised candy jar!

The message jarTake a large sheet of chart paper and cut into small rectangles the size of visiting cards. On each, using your best handwriting, write an inspirational message, a short poem, or a love note. Or you could have a fixed number of things (10 things I love about us) and put one list item in each card. Roll each card up into a scroll, and secure with twine. Put the messages into an empty jar, and sprinkle in some glitter or confetti to dress it up, and screw back on the lid. Wrap some more twine around the neck of the jar, and glue on a final “card” on the lid.

Wolf of Wall Street swagger for Valentine’s

Gentlemen, it’s that time of the year again and your Valentine is looking forward to the big night as much as you are. This is where all of your style notes come into play. Hope you have been following along. This isn’t your regular date night, this is where romance and your style make a statement. Most likely, your wife, girlfriend or your occasional lover is going to look like a knockout. From head to toe, she’ll be at her best. There is no excuse for you to not reciprocate the gesture. Let’s take a look at what will make her fall in love with you all over again.

Whatever you want to call it, you have to look sophisticated. Leave your suits at home and bring out the edgy cool.

There are an array of blazers out there and fantastic leather jackets. It won’t be too hard to find the right one. The idea is to put on an outfit without fussing about a necktie. Even if it’s a swanky joint, it’s one hell of a statement to make when you’ve got tailored trousers, a blazer, dress shirt and no tie.

cologne is as important as your outfit. Avoid really strong scents. For the love of God, stay away from the smell of musk. If

you tend to sweat more often than you’d like, body spray is perfectly fine. If that’s not the case, spray your cologne lightly.

in your closet? This is when you take them out. Trousers are fine, but wearing fine quality denim around your waist will contribute to that Hollywood anti-hero look.

Q: I’ve recently bought another bottle of Giorgio Armani’s Acqua Di Gio. My wife absolutely loves this scent on me, but I want to know how much is too much when it comes to perfumes? I keep having to hug my wife in order for her to smell it.A: That is one of the best smelling colognes, good choice. A lot of men tend to pour on cologne like body wash. Colognes, heavy or light, should never be worn like body spray. The procedure is very simple. There should only be three sprays from a bottle. One spray right behind each ear, placed on the neck. The third and final spray is reserved for your left or right wrist. Then, gently rub both wrists together. That’s how you properly apply cologne, it’s just the right amount for any occasion. Now, not only will you smell amazing, but that scent will trigger certain memories without being overbearing.

Q: I’ve got really big plans for my girlfriend this Valentine’s Day. The problem is that last year, she wore something risqué. How do I tell her what she’s wearing is inappropriate without insulting her?A: This is how most men get in trouble. You say something and you’re the villain. Bite your tongue and you’re in for a very uncomfortable night. In the etiquette guide for gentlemen, the best possible approach is an indirect one. See yourself as a diplomat, along the lines of, “Sweetheart, it’s a posh restaurant, not a nightclub,” or, “I would love to hit the beach too, but it’s cold as a Serbian winter outside.” In other words, there isn’t a straight out win for you in this situation. If she ever asks you how she looks, you always say good. Nothing more, nothing less. If all else fails, say you two will be meeting your parents afterward.

Style tip: Matching with your beautiful date on the Valentine’s Day is a big no-no. If she insists on wearing something similar to your attire, switch things around and tell her that colour coordinating isn’t as attractive as contrasting

Style Session

If you haven’t watched the Academy Award nominated film The Wolf of Wall Street, you are definitely missing out. It’s a portrayal of an outlandish lifestyle, including sex, drugs and endless stacks of Benjamins. All of which are totally illegal, except for the fashion. It’s the epitome of power suits and jet setting casual wear of the late ‘80s going into the ‘90s. However, there is a particular look in the film worn by the main character Jordan Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, as he invites the FBI onto his multi-million dollar yacht. We can’t live the life of Mr Dicaprio but we can surely steal his on-set style to impress our Valentine dates.

We’re definitely not in the ‘90s so here’s a more appropriate version of the outfit to meet today’s standards. This look is very Ivy League or preppy so make sure to have a container of pomade for your quiff or side part.

White polo shirtIt’s a Ralph Lauren Polo shirt in the film but you can use any solid white polo.

Pleated trousers Pleated bottoms aren’t always the most flattering, you can substitute them with flat-front khaki or cream (off-white) coloured trousers. Cats Eye has a fine selection starting at Tk1,590.

LoafersJordan’s wearing a very expensive pair

of white loafers. You can easily replace those with tan or light brown loafers or even boat shoes. Head on over to Artisti for same of the best quality loafers, but be prepared to spend around Tk 6,000.

AccessoriesAll you’ll need is a pair of Ray-Ban shades, two-toned belt and a Rolex. Well, the sunglasses don’t necessarily have to be Ray-Bans but anything similar to the frames worn in the film will do just fine.

There should be no compromise on quality. This means your shoes better be polished or brushed. You should be freshly trimmed or shaved, get a haircut if you need to. Most importantly, make sure your confidence is there in every step that you take. That swagger will surely sweep her off her feet. Last but not least, have fun.

Page 10: Avenue T Volume 1 Issue 41

AVEN U E T TH U RSDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2014

Another fabric of choice is lace. It’s sexy, especially black lace with a nude lining.

Stepping out in styleYou are all dressed up and it’s time to head out to your date, don’t forget to strut your stuff in a nice pair of heels. Make sure that they are comfortable or your posture will be compromised and that’s never hot.

Underneath it allOne thing to not forget when getting dressed up for your significant other is to pay attention to your undergarments as well. Whether anyone sees it or not, it’s important to match your lingerie with your outfit; you will feel even more confident and it will definitely show.

Hot huesThe colours of love do not have to be red or baby pink. Branch out and pick shades from this year’s colours of the year. Although pink, red and white are the classics, don’t be afraid to mix things up with fuchsia, lilac, creamy beige and the ever so sexy black.

Tailored to perfectionIf you are opting for a sari this Valentine’s, then make sure your blouse is tailor-made to fit and showcase your assets. A deep V-back with a little bow and small details can make even a simple georgette sari look really expensive. If you are going western, opt for a well fitted blazer to top off whatever you are wearing.

Fabrics that matterBeautiful and flowy chiffon, georgette and silk are definitely the fabrics of choice. They’re all touchable and flattering no matter what size you are.

The faceYou’ll probably be spending some quality time with your significant other, so keep it simple. This night should highlight how good your skin looks as well as how smooth it feels to the touch. Go easy on the war paint to avoid smudging. Use a cream blush on the apples of your cheeks to mimic the natural glow you get after a workout session or a roll in the hay. Mix a small amount of sugar with a dab of cocoa butter balm, available at Lavender at Tk250 and up. Spread the mixture on your lips and scrub gently to remove flaky skin. Oh and as tempting as it may be, do not try to eat this concoction. Wash off and use a flavoured lip-gloss for smooth, kissable lips.

The bodySkin is in. Make an appointment with your masseuse before the big night out. Regular massages stimulate circulation and has a toning effect on the skin. Take it up a notch by adding some coffee grounds to your favourite body wash. The caffeine helps reduce the appearance of cellulite while the scrubbing motion leaves you with glowing skin.

The restDon’t fret if you don’t have enough re-growth to ensure a smooth wax. There are a host of razors manufactured with women in mind. Try the Gillette Venus, available at Dhali Super Shop for Tk1,000. Use hair conditioner instead of regular shaving foam for silky smooth legs. Remember to exfoliate skin prior to shaving to avoid irritation.

Boho long and loose Every single guy I know, listed this as their very first and favourite choice. They love to see long, flowing, wavy hair on a woman, touchably soft and not overly styled. If you already have wavy hair, marvellous. If not, use a big curling iron or extra-large rollers to get the waves, then finger-comb through them, with your head upside down. Spritz with a light-hold hairspray to set the waves.

Sporty ponytailI never thought guys would love our favourite lazy-day look, but apparently,

a lot of men love sporty high ponytails. Bend at the waist and scrape all of your hair into a high ponytail, secure with an elastic band and lastly, arrange your bangs. (If you have them.)

Big voluminous hair We already knew this one, didn’t we? Guys love big sexy hair, especially when you wear it with smokey eyes and a come-hither look. Let your hair air dry, apply mousse, blow-dry hair upside down, tease a little and then spray with an all-over hold hairspray. Good girl straight locks This is a look that is all about ditching the curls and really going with something super straight, super shiny and super chic. Straight hair looks really pretty and if you are dying to show your guy something sophisticated, try wearing your hair straight! All you need to do is run a straightening iron through your hair and it won’t be time consuming either, if you are working late and heading for that romantic Valentine’s dinner straight away. You will still look stunning.

Fishtail braid I’m obsessed with this look. The fishtail braid is my favourite braid of all time. Of course, it’s a little tricky if you are doing it yourself. You could bring all your hair to one side and do a one-sided fishtail braid. Pull it a little loose to add stoutness to your look. This style works best if all sections of you hair is of the same length.

Knot updo Whether you want to look as pretty as a princess or just casually chic, the bun is easy to master and makes you look super cute and classy. The neater your hair bun is, the more elegant you’ll appear. On the other hand, if you pull out a few tresses and loosen them up, it will still look glamourous in a whole different way. If you want to go all out, try the braided sock bun! It’s one of my favourites. This style makes you look effortlessly gorgeous.

Make your man fall in love with you all over again with some of these hairstyles that you can try for the Valentine’s Day. The hairdos women love and the ones guys prefer can sometimes be worlds apart. However, there are a few hairstyles guys love, almost unanimouslyNaureen Hassan

AA, I am a 33-year-old married man. I married S two years ago - it was an arranged marriage. While we instantly took a liking to each other, problems arose once we began to get intimate. She often jokingly mocks me and my manhood and talks about my weaknesses in a taunting manner. While I laugh it off with her, deep down inside, it really bothers me. This is damaging my self-esteem and I really feel very inadequate. How can I cope with this situation?

This is something you need to address quite quickly and openly. Do not try to have this conversation when you two are intimate. Go for a walk in the park and approach the subject by telling your wife that you want to discuss something

that has been upsetting you quite a lot, over the last few months. Do point it out to her that you are aware of the fact that she does not mean to make you feel uncomfortable or put you down. Tell her how her jokes and words, which may be harmless, make you feel dejected and humiliated, and ask if there is something you can do about it. Assure her that you love her and want to please her, and ask her for pointers on how to make your sex life better. Without making any negative remarks about her or her body, open up those bottled up feelings and tell her how she makes you feel inadequate. Remind her again that you want to know what it is that she wants from you and that you are ready to do anything to make her happy.

I’m a 26 year old man and I have been working for an asset management company for the past eight months. In our chain of command, I am directly working under the administrative control of two people, K and M. K is a 28-year-old, over ambitious woman who’s always indulging in office politics to get her way around the workplace. Over the past few months K and I have worked closely on several occasions, and while we have been partially

friendly, sometimes I felt that she would intrude into my personal space. While this sounds odd, sometimes it felt like she made sexual advances that is anything but welcome. I’ve seen her do the same with others before but I am not comfortable with this. I’d like her to stop, but her being a woman, I know there is no one I can complain to. Is there any way to ask her to back off without getting into her bad books?

You have found yourself in a sticky position. In a situation like yours, any wrong move can lead to frightening consequences. Given her hold at your workplace, and given the fact that she’s a woman – people will most likely believe that you are somehow to blame. The best way to get around this is to approach her, in a friendly, yet honest manner. The next time she makes one of these “sexual advances,” politely tell her you’re more

comfortable as friends and wouldn’t like to complicate relations with your co-workers. If she persists, try to gently ignore her advances without aggravating her.

Lovebirds are small five to six inch long parrots. They are considered one of the most affectionate and beautiful of birds. These birds can be a real delight for those who enjoy the love and attention pets have to offer. However, before making a hurried decision to adopt a pair of these little ones, take a few things into consideration. As birds that live well into their teens, you must keep in mind that there is no temporary frolicking with these ones. Like most serious lovers, these lovebirds require a long term commitment on your part.

ConsiderIf you get a lovebird, you must ensure that both you and your birdies have ample space. Do you have a separate section at your home that can conveniently house your bird cage? Since lovebirds make noise during the day, it’s necessary to

make sure they aren’t bothering your household or your neighbours.

PurchaseWhen making a trip to buy your chosen lovebirds, there are a few pointers you should write off your checklist. One, your bird must be clean and well fed. Carefully inspect your bird and enquire about its daily eating habits from the salesman. The bird’s eyes should be clean, while the feet should have scales that are clean and tight. As for whether you should adopt one or two, it’s always wiser to get two lovebirds as they are such social birds. Luckily, they are almost always sold in pairs. Also remember, if you’re not looking to have them breed, it’s better to get two of the same sex.

Usually there are two kinds of lovebirds, one that has been tamed and has

Traditionally, the term “bachelor pad” has been synonymous with small, messy and disorganised caves where Neanderthal men reside. However, with a few simple hints and tips, one can help make it look classy and organised. One of the most effective and simplest means of upgrading your bachelor pad is to paint it. Choosing the right colours can do wonders for anyone’s home. Get rid of the clutter that simply gathers dust, organise your clothes and accessories tidily and effectively. A little cleaning up will have an immediate effect on the appearance of your pad. Other than this, a few healthy additions around the place will make it look sharper.

Coffee tableYour living room or den needs a centrepiece so what’s better than a trendy coffee table? If you want to follow the stylish route, head down the minimalist lane and get yourself a white or black table that is rectangular, low and boasts tiny legs. If you really want something that’ll stand out, then

kidney-shaped ones like those from the ‘50s, and even wide leather ottomans could do the trick. Try Otobi or Legacy (Gulshan) to create your own.

Mini barIf you have a bar in your living room or den, then you’re already one step ahead of the game. But you’re a true winner if you know what to keep in your bar to make it look cool. If you don’t have a bar, all is not lost. Get yourself a serving cart and keep it in the lounge room.

Anything retroYou can always put an old-school spin on your kitchen by purchasing a vintage-style toaster, juicer, blender or ice crusher. Even if you don’t use any of the aforementioned appliances, they’ll serve as great decorative items. Try scourging through Gulshan DCC market for some unique finds.

ArtShow the lady who’s visiting that you’re a man of culture by displaying your

artistic side on the wall. Art serves as a reflection of your own taste and style. However, if you’re unsure about what to get, just keep in mind that vintage advertising and posters are considered timeless works of art.

Decorating your bachelor pad doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. Check out local home furnishing stores, browse through magazines and use some of the hints above to get your creative juices flowing.

Brazilian Churrasco started its journey some twenty odd years ago in Singapore and slowly began to take over Asia. It’s the first of its kind concept restaurant here in Bangladesh. It offers a high end Brazilian buffet dining experience. Here is the idea - it is an all-you-can-eat, meat buffet. Literally! With an insane array of side dishes to choose from, along with a cold and hot salad/sides bar. The grilled meat is marinated for 12 hours and they keep coming to your table with large skewers full meal, gingerly shaving off delicious pieces of beef, chicken and lamb until you just cannot eat anymore. Read on to find more about this super trendy hot spot in town.

Ambiance: Once you enter the restaurant, you are welcomed to a large foray. The lighting is bright but ambient and the large glass windows look out onto a small garden, full of small, sparkling blue lights. It truly gives one a sense of being outside Dhaka, without ever having to board an airplane. The staff is well-trained and Avenue T was told that they went through a long screening/training process for weeks. Half of your dining experience really does come from the service and here everyone seems to know what you need, even before you ask for it. Best of all, there is no hovering. Vegetarians beware, this is a meat lovers’ paradise!

Proof of the pudding: As is the tradition of a Brazilian grill, your menu is pre-chosen for you. So everyone gets to eat the same thing. Here is a long list of the food items we feasted on. We started our meal with soft succulent prawns also known as Camarao Grelhado. They were so deliciously cooked that we have been happy to just have that for a whole meal. Next on the rotation was the Picanha, which is a choice cut of beef. We had a wonderfully tender on the inside and crispy on the outside bunch of slices so no complains there. Then there was the beef ham, which well, if you can’t do right then you should really not open a restaurant. These guys did do it right! Next, there was Cupim, which is beef hump cooked on a grill. The meat was tender and juicy, especially because when they are cut in slivers, the beef doesn’t get dry as quick. Then there were the chicken thighs, again, incredibly well-cooked, soft, juicy, flavoursome meat. But after having had just one round of all of these, we could barely eat anymore, yet there was one more thing to try and that was the chicken breasts. Again, it was so wonderfully cooked and soft that we couldn’t really find anything to complain about. Just when we thought we were done, we were presented with a Brazilian delicacy of grilled pineapples called Abacaxi Grelhado. That was interesting, although not entirely sure if that suits all palates but if you are the adventurous sort, do give it a try. Apart from all of these, there is a large selection of sides

and salads. The cold salads include potato salad, Mediterranean pepper salad, heart of palm salad, fresh tomato salad, red and green apple salad, mixed seafood salad, etc. While on the hot side of things, you can expect steamed rice with bay leaves, deep fried mushrooms, baby potato with rosemary and garlic, mixed grilled vegetable salad, sautéed onions and so on.

Bang for the buck: This eatery charges a flat Tk3,200 per person and given the amount of food that is being served, this not as expensive as it sounds. Not to mention, a beautiful setting and wonderful customer service. You could eat until you drop here and the food is of fantastic quality and every different grill that we tasted had a distinct flavour profile. Nothing here is homogeneous as far as the food goes. There is serious value for money.

Verdict: If there is one place you need to go check out, this should be it. It’s an experience. A first of its kind in Dhaka with outstanding quality and taste of food and the ambiance that will leave you feeling like you’re in a different world altogether. A word to the wise, it’s best to skip lunch before you go here because the sheer quantity of food being served to you will not only overwhelm you but your stomach too!
