From the Editor

There was an encouraging response to Issue 141,and my thanks to those who sent their comments.Included were emails from Australia, USA, andCanada, reinforcing a long-held belief that theshared interests of groups around the world havepotential as a unifying force. If only some of our"leaders" would take up Vintage aeromodelling!

The landscape format was received well, and I amhappy to continue with it, although some of theshortcomings of the publishing program I decided touse have become obvious. There are two areaswhere you can assist when sending material: sendtext files without fancy formating, and sendphotographs in JPEG format as a separate file ratherthan imbedded in the text.

Autumn has been a vintage flying season. Weathercooperated for several major events, reports ofwhich are in this issue. The long-running GarethNewton meet has been joined by the Tuakau Rallyand the North Island Vintage RC Champs, both ofwhich will, hopefully, become annual events to caterfor the expanding Vintage scene.

For several years the Vintage SIG has been at oddswith the national organisation in regard to the latter'sattempts to reduce the number of events on offer atthe Nationals. Rather than prunning, the VintageSIG planted. While the newly introduced Classicalevents are still undersubscribed, perhaps because

building lists are already filled with Vintage designs,it is inevitable that the wealth of elegant and highperformance models from the Classical period willgain increasing attention. The Zaic Yearbooks arean excellent way to see the scope of eligible designs.

We need not obsess over numbers - there is alreadyenough of that in other areas. Offering a wide rangeof events rather than channelling fliers into a reducednumber of events is proving to be the way to get moremodellers at the field and more models in the air.

While Vintage is in a robust state, health problems athome prevented me from attending all but theTuakau Rally, so for much of your issue's contentyou can thank the contributors listed below.

2015 NORTH ISLAND RC VINTAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS John Butcher

This event was held in excellent weather at the Thames Blackfeet MAC field on Torehape Rd. Attendance was encouraging with close to 20 flyers enjoying the extended weekend and a lot of models flitting about. Support for the classical events was a little light but that’s going to improve, I am sure, at least for electric powered models. Which events to hold on which day is a bit tricky. The most popular need to be on Saturday or Sunday for sure, so this year’s format was probably about right. My view is that we definitely should hold a similar meet each year at about the same time. Judging by the happy faces, everybody seemed to be enjoying the company, the weather, and the flying - surely a stamp of approval on the meeting and a good omen for a repeat next year. There were some very powerful thermals at times which caused some models to be in danger of disappearing but at times the hand of God seemed to push down rather heavily. Verty few models were damaged over the 3 days. I saw one damaged cowling, a Tom Boy that suffered a cracked trailing edge at the fuselage after a vertical descent due to a depleted receiver battery, a Slicker that was attacked by a transmitter, and a mysterious sub fin - as yet unclaimed as far as I know. So, considering the number of flights, a very commendable result. Of all the types of models seen at vintage meets, I think the E-Rubber models are the most captivating to watch. The precision fly off is always exciting to watch and this one was no exception. I’m afraid I suffered from dumb thumbs so came a distant third. The ½ E fly off was somewhat more sedate with three models sitting nose into wind and hoping for some lift. All three exceeded 20 mins and the same pattern went for the E Rubber fly off, though even more sedate. Thanks to Paul and Martin Evans for preparing the field, Wayne and Judy Cartwright for keeping tabs on things and the fliers for turning up and making the occasion. JOHN BUTCHER

The PLANS SERVICE - a brief history Mark Venter

I took over management of the plans library in September 2005 fromIvan Treen, and Neil McDougal shipped around 800 plans to me in, frommemory, six wooden crates. I managed to get this done for free via awork colleague who had some connections in the courier service.

It took some time to update the plans lists and work through the variousplans and track down a number that were "missing" - as in not havingbeen returned. Next job that I quickly realised was a big problem andmoney chugger was that the plans library operated on a loan fee of $5per plan. This covered postage and the repairs and copying of plansthat had become unusable. Unfortunately this was not ideal in that themajority of the plans when donated were in various states of disrepairand after a couple of times through the postal system and sitting in themailboxs in the rain they needed to be replaced by copying.

Around this time I was looking at digitising some of my own plansthrough one of our local copy centers but this turned out to be a costlyand time consuming task. Other people were doing similar work and anumber of us decided to combine our efforts. Roland in the US had ahuge collection of plans that he was digitising and offered to do ourplans as well. Locally it was costing me around $4 per plan to get themscanned. I could ship around 20-25 plans (2 kg) to Roland for around$2 per plan, so AVANZ funded the initial shipping of the plans andRoland did a professional job with his flatbed scanner, scanning thecomplete plan in one go.

Around this time the guys in the UK were looking at doing the same withall the plans from David Baker's estate - some 4000 plans. It was goingto cost them a fortune to ship them so Roland did some sterling workand managed to get funding from the Frank Zaic Trust fund to covershipping all our plans over in return for providing AMA with a scannedcopy. The Frank Zaic Trust fund is managed by the AMA and is topromote Vintage modelling.

Well, this all happened and took a year or three for the plans to bescanned with us working on them, cleaning up the digital copies asRoland got them done. At this time pretty much all plans that were ingood enough condition have been scanned and we are well on the wayto cleaning them all up.

This whole project has been a huge effort by a small number ofdedicated guys around the world. The result is that we are now able toprovide plans in pdf format for free by email. No more postage, no morestorage issues of paper plans and certainly no more problems of worn, ripped, or faded plans to contend with.

Currently, most of us are having a break from plans but will probably geton with the time consuming work of cleaning up plans as soon as we feelrefreshed enough to give it another go - and I certainly need some timeto renew my building and flying again.

So where to next? We (ie Roland) are still looking at a better websiteand method to offer & list all the plans. I am hoping to get my own siteupdated with a listing of just NZ designs. Some time later this year I willbe asking for help with information and photos for the NZ designscollected so far.

I still have a large number of plans that need working through and mayship another batch of those that are not yet in our collection to Roland. There are also many duplicates that did not need to be shipped, or arein such a poor state that they need redrawing. I will be listing all theduplicate paper plans I have and making them available, throughAVANZ, for the cost of postage to whoever wants them.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Model on the building board ?Working on a new idea ?

Unless it's that special competition weapon you don't want anyone else to know about, what about sharing it ?If you need reasons .....- It may encourage others to build ... (that has to be good)- Those who have been down the same path may have some hints for you ... (and that'd be good too)- We'd like to read about it and we'd all think you are a really, really, lovely person for sharing ... (that's really good)- Best of all, you will become famous nationally, and since the News is attached to some overseas publications, internationallyas well. Your building skills will be widely recognised; there will be a rush, nay, a veritable torrent (perhaps even a plethora) ofoffers from kit designers, model magazines, news services, and some of the more desperate branches of the Country Women'sInstitute; you'll be able to wave good-bye to the boss and make aeromodelling your full time occupation ... (that last bit may notbe absolutely, 100% true but everyone can dream, can't they?)

G'on ... It's just a few words and some pictures, you can do it !

Yes you can

THE ENGINE ROOM Chris Murphy

The OS Max 15 story

Shigeo Ogawa (1917-1992), the founder of OS made his first engine, the1.6cc Type-1 ‘Pixie’ in 1936 and about 200 examples were exported underthe ‘Pixie’ brand name. In 1937 it was succeeded by the Type-2 of 6.92cc,followed in 1938 by the 7.45cc Type-3 engine. The OS Engine Mfg Co wasfounded in 1941-the name coming from the founders initials. Productioncontinued into 1942 with the Type-8, until production in support of the wareffort took priority over model engines.Immediately postwar, engine production resumed with the Type-10 in 1946and a very Atwood Spitfire looking Type-11 in the same year followed by aPulse jet and Type-12 in 1947, a beefy racing 64 in 1948, and the first OS29 glow in 1949, followed by a range of glows in several sizes over the nextfew years. 1954 saw the introduction of the first OS-Max engine-the enginerange that would set the standard and change the fortunes of OS forever, turning the company into a major player on the world scene. This was theOS Max-1 29, followed in quick succession by the Max-1 35 which, as was

fairly standard at the time, sharedmany components with the 29model.The OS Max-1 15 was introducedin 1955 and it was this engine onwhich the future fortunes of OSwere to pivot, when in 1956 theUK’s Ron Draper won the FF FAIPower World Championship withhis ‘Crescendo 62’ model poweredby an OS Max-1 15. This gave OSworldwide attention, and focusedthe attention of the UK, westernEurope, Australia and the USA onthe company and its products. Itwas this win that gave OS the

cachet and entry into a globalmarket-as well as focusing themodel press on the wider range ofOS engines that had hithertobeen below the radar. SuddenlyOS 29 and 35 engines were beingseen in C/L stunt circlespreviously dominated by the Frog500 or Fox 35.OS continued development, withthe Max-II versions of the 29 and35 being released in 1957, andthe Max-II 15 in 1958-by whichtime OS were beginning tobecome well established in themajority of their overseasmarkets-even in the US-wherecompetition from well-established domestic brands wasintense in all engine sizes OSproduced. This was an era of both rapiddevelopment and rangeexpansion for OS. The Max III 29and 35 models were released in1959, along with the Pet-II modelof the Pet 099, with the Max-III 15following in 1961. It must havebeen a good model as it remainedin production for the next fourteenyears until superseded by thedrop in liner Max 15 model, introduced in 1975 which in turn stayed around until the introduction of theSchneurle ported 15FP in 1987. R/C throttles and different sized venturi

THE ENGINE ROOM ... continued Chris Murphy

inserts for the standard model as well as a counterbalanced prop driverwere all innovations introduced with the Max-III 15 model, and continuedsubsequently. How did they go?......wellgood enough to win the F/FWorld Championships for astart! Both ‘Model Aircraft’and ‘Aeromodeller’ tested theMax-15 finding 0.27BHP at~15,000rpm and 0.2365BHPat similar revs respectively-this was right up there withcomparable good ball bearingdiesel performance for power, and this was from alightweight plain bearing glowengine! The later OS Max-III 15 wasalso tested by MA and foundto produce near identical performance-but from a more compact package.MA noted that the only parts common to both models of Max 15 were thecon rod and backplate. The Max-III however, on test proved a very potent engine-producing0.3BHP @ 16,000 on straight 75/25 methanol-castor and responding verywell to high nitro fuel, with 0.36 BHP @ 17,500 on 30% nitro and 0.425BHP at 18,400 on 50% nitro. Admittedly this was running ‘all stops out’ onpressure feed with no venturi restrictor-with an open exhaust-but it didindicate the potential of the design. The later R/C versions were considerably tamer on test-but these weretested on 5% nitro fuel, and the R/C carb had a reduced choke area incomparison.

But the OS Max-15 remains the engine that gave OS their big break intothe big time-and many originals continue in use today-especially in F/Fand C/L sport, where their easy handling, easy starting and more thanadequate power output continue to be held in regard 50 years on..US fliers would probably come down on the side of the OS Max 15’s maincompetition - the plain bearing K&B Greenhead 15 which had a similarpopular following through the 1950s - but the OS had the edge in bothpower and longevity.

The Red Ripper has already appeared in AVANZ News, but it's worth another airing, especially with photographs of David Ackery's fine version

Jerry Peeples Flying Aces July 1940 72" Wingspan

RED RIPPERWhen the Red Ripper was reprinted in the February 1980 ModelBuilder, it was with the comment: "If there is any part of the model thatis pretty, I must have missed it". Then follows a list of structural defectsin the original (all of which would be easily remedied) and the grudgingconcession that "The Red Ripper looks like it could be made to fly prettydarn well".Reviewing the B&W kit, Don Bekins was a little more positive. "It's allstrange, square looking stab, and has a humpback. But envision whatthe wind sees as it flows over the wings and tail in flight. The wind sees

almost exactly what it sees in a Lanzo Bomber, one of the most popularand best flying antique models. The wings have similar dihedral, planform and efficient airfoil. The tails have large lifting stabs. Themoments are similar, giving both models great stability. Both the Bomber and Red Ripper have a minimal amount of crosssection and wood in them. And both are relatively easy to build and tokeep under weight. This airplane is a sleeper, and may climb to the topof the competition results when it is discovered".

FFoNZ NoticesThe North Island Free FlightChamps were held at Rayner’sFarm in Carterton over 13th – 15thMarch. Twenty people came fromall over the North Island and fromwhat I could see everyone really

enjoyed themselves. We had a mix of weather but every day wasflyable and given that cyclone Pam was causing havoc further northI think that we were quite lucky with the conditions. This was my first time running the event and I have to say that I reallyenjoyed it. People were out to have fun flying planes and enjoyingthe company of likeminded people.Friday dawned with a light nor-easter and sunshine. Open eventswere well supported, particularly Simple Open Glider and OpenRubber. Vintage combined was dominated by rubber models. AllanDouglas’s beautiful Playboy Senior’s engine refused to co-operatewith a good run but it certainly looked impressive in the short flight itmanaged. The wind got up later in the day but despite this four peoplemanaged to max out in Open Rubber. All agreed that a fly off wouldbe better delayed until the following morning hoping that thesoutherly front would not arrive until later in the morning.Saturday 0700 for the fly off and the southerly gale was alreadyestablished – delay the fly off again. Seven people flew P30 makingit a great contest. In the wind good lift was very hard to pick. In theend Trish Smith beat Paul Squires by one second to win. It was clearthat no one was keen to fly other classes in the strong wind so I made

the decision to run them all on Sunday as the forecast was for betterweather.Early Sunday and the contestants were all ready for the OpenRubber fly off by 7:45am. Chris Murphy went first but his modeldecided to go straight rather than circle and ended up out of sightbehind a row of trees. Bill McGarvey, Linc Vincent and Paul Squireswent later and close together. Flight times were close and visibilitybehind trees played in again however it was the same for everyone.Bill McGarvey’s Wakefield just managed to beat Linc Vincent’s openrubber class model for the win.My decision to fly a lot of classes on the last day meant that some ofthe events on Sunday had only a few competitors but no one seemedto mind. The biggest contest was in combined catapult, hand launch, tip launch glider. As seems to be the trend everyone flew catapult –immensely enjoying except perhaps for the rock hard ground takingits toll on bad launches. Ouch. Peter Wilson started well but lost hismodel after a couple of flights. Paul Squires took top honours withTerry Tank and Graham Lovejoy close behind in second and thirdplaces respectively. All in all a great event and well supported. It was great to see someold faces returning to Free Flight. Dinner out at the Buckhorn and theIndian Taj were also great fun.Rayner’s is ideal for Free Flight at this time of the year. There are nocrops, the grass is short and there is minimal stock to be worriedabout. Also the weather is generally kinder to us in March than at NewYears. Roll on the next one!
