F2: Examining the Trees and Leaves

Take your class for an outdoor walk in the fall to observe the trees and leaves. They can complete the "Tree Observation Chart" while on the walk. They can also do this activity at home for follow-up or homework.

Remind the students that all seasons are good times to observe trees. In the United States, there are more than 800 different kinds of trees. Trees adapt to seasonal changes. Some change colors or drop their leaves in the fall.

Trees are categorized into three main areas: palm, conifer, and broadleaf. The largest family is the broadleaf, including many deciduous trees like the maple, birch, and oak.

On the walk remind children to think about the animals that make their homes in trees or depend upon the trees for survival during the winter.
