2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Economy cruising in upscale packageIn automotive vernacular,

the word “cruise” means to drive around at a constant speed, usually to show off your car to other cruisers or to enjoy the driving expe-rience. In the 21st century, with a different spelling, but the same pronunciation, “Cruze” means economy and style with a Chevy Bow-tie badge on the grille.

Replacing both the Chev-rolet Cobalt and the Euro-pean and Asian-sold Dae-woo-built Lacetti (known in America as the Suzuki Forenza), the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze sits on the redesigned Delta platform. Engineers employed a “wheels-out, body-in” look, with a hori-zontally split grille and for-ward stance. The sculpted exterior offers a wide stance, raked windshield and arched roof, and its inspired interior provides a roomy and pleas-ing atmosphere that exceeds the look and feel of most compact economy cars.

Cruze is engineered with a steel unibody frame with front and rear crumple zones; galvanized steel front fenders, hood, roof, door panels, one-piece bodyside outer panel, thermal plastic olefin (TPO) bumper fascias and chrome door handles.

At 181 inches long, 70.7 inches wide and 58.1 inches high on a 105.7-inch wheel-base, the 3200-lb. Cruze looks smaller from far away than it does up close, as you get a feel of a small mid-size rather than a compact.

Fuel-efficient turboBuilt in Chevrolet’s Lord-

stown, Ohio plant, the front-wheel drive, 4-door, 5-passenger Cruze affirms Chevrolet’s commitment to building refined, fuel-ef-ficient vehicles using new, small-displacement, four-cylinder engines.

Cruze utilizes a fresh Ecotec 1.4-liter I-4 turbo with variable valve tim-ing and is highway rated at 36mpg for the automatic version, while the manual Cruze could deliver 40mpg on the Interstate.

My Cruze LTZ test ride was powered by the Ecotec turbo that produced 138hp and 148 lbs-ft of torque. Also available is a 1.8-liter engine that hums out 138 horses, but only 125 lbs-ft of torque, and the turbo,

matched with a Hydra-Ma-tic 6T40 six-speed auto-matic is EPA rated at 24/36, while the 1.8-liter is esti-mated at 22/35. A week of mixed-use driving in my re-view Cruze achieved an av-erage of 30.4mpg on regular unleaded gasoline.

Certainly not a Chevy muscle car, Cruze’s turbo only managed a 9.6-second zero-to-60 sprint for me, and lumbered through the quarter-mile in 17.5 seconds.

On the highway, accelera-tion seems steady, but you do have to strategize passing and velocity increases.

Smooth, confident rideOn the road, my Silver

Ice Metallic Cruze LTZ was stable for its class, with a smooth ride delivered by an independent, MacPherson strut-type front suspen-sion with side-loaded strut modules, specifically tuned coil springs, direct-acting stabilizer bar (hollow) and hydraulic ride bushings.

The rear suspension is a specifically adapted com-pound crank (torsion beam) set-up with double-walled, U-shaped profile at the rear and a Z-link (tunable control arm). The system is good for a comfortable experience. Though road feel is damp-ened somewhat, surface nuances are lessened to the pleasure of passengers and the average segment drivers.

All-speed traction con-trol uses engine torque re-duction and brake interven-tion and proved confident on dry and wet pavement. The rack-mounted electric power steering delivered some understeer and was NOT auto-cross exact, but was unhesitating enough for highway and boulevard ma-neuvering.

Power front disc brakes with rear drums and elec-tronic stability control is standard, and stopping power and capability on 17-inch rubber were well above segment averages.

Inspired cabin designInside, you get the feel-

ing that designers were more inspired with the in-terior than the exterior. The grained, soft-touch compo-nent-filled cabin is roomy and offers a mid-size en-vironment in this compact package. Chevrolet also en-gineered tight fit and fin-ish while adorning it with a classy control panel and black bezels to play off the Jet Black leather appointed interior

Seating capacity is two in front and three in the sec-ond row with headroom of 39.3 inches in the first row and 37.9 in the rear; legroom measures 42.3 and 35.4 and shoulder room is 54.7 and

53.9. Standard amenities in-clude heated leather seats with driver’s power adjust-ment, automatic climate control, the uplevel backlit instrument cluster, ultra-sonic rear park assist, USB port, Bluetooth connect-ability and an acoustically designed knit headliner that helps make the passen-ger compartment quieter. The interior pillar and oth-er moldings are color- and grain-matched to the head-liner, while seat inserts are color-matched to the color of the instrument panel ac-cent trim, giving the cabin the detailed appearance of

larger, upscale sedans.

Best safety offeringsFrom a safety perspec-

tive, Cruze has no segment peer, as cabin inhabitants are protected by 10 air bags (front airbags, driver and front passenger knee air-bags, front- and rear-seat-mounted side airbags, two-row side curtain airbags) a rigid high-strength steel safety cage, Stabilitrak plus traction control and Chev-rolet’s Onstar system.

To save space in the trunk, Cruze comes with a tire sealant and inflator kit – a spare tire is a $100 option.

Cruze is available in four trims starting at $16,995 for the LS. My LTZ was base priced at $21,975. A power sliding sunroof added $850 and destination and freight added $720 for a sticker price of $23,545.

Electric cars post small December salesBy SHARON SILKE CARTyAP AuTo WriTEr

DETROIT — This was the year General Motors Co. and Nissan made good on their promise to bring mass-pro-duced electric cars to the market. But don’t count on seeing one in traffic soon. Sales so far have been micro-scopic and they’re likely to stay that way for some time because of limited supplies.

GM sold between 250 and 350 Chevy Volts this month and Nissan’s sales totaled less than 10 Leaf sedans in the past two weeks. Production for both is slowly ramping up.

It will be well into 2012 be-fore both the Volt and Leaf are available nationwide. And if you’re interested in buying one, you’ll need to get behind the 50,000 peo-ple already on waiting lists.

It’s still unclear just how large the market for electric cars will be once those early adopters are supplied. The base sticker price is $40,280 for the Volt and $32,780 for the Leaf, much higher than most similar-sized, gas-powered cars. If those pric-es rise, it could make them even more of a niche product than predicted. Buyers also are worried that advertised lease deals may not last, and a federal tax rebate of $7,500 could disappear if Congress decides battery-powered cars are no longer a priority.

The first electric car sales were marked with fanfare. The envy of green-car geeks across the country, new owners were treated like rock stars at dealerships. They

were greeted by high-level GM and Nissan executives, followed by cameramen and interviewed by local report-ers. When they got home, they blogged about their experiences, sent links of newspaper stories to their friends, and stopped to talk to anyone who expressed in-terest in their new wheels.

‘Like any other car’Jeff Heeren of Nashville,

Tenn., became the sixth Nis-san Leaf owner on Dec. 22. Nissan’s advertising agency, Chiat Day, followed Heeren and his family around as they picked up their silver-col-ored Leaf, and have posted a video on the Leaf’s Face-book page. Not surprising-ly, Heeren is a fan. “What’s amazed me the most in driv-ing it is that it’s just a car, like any other car,” he said.

The Leaf is the only all-electric car on the market. It can travel about 100 miles on battery power before need-ing to be recharged. Using a standard outlet, that takes 16 to 18 hours. Nissan Motor Co. recommends that Leaf owners install a 220/240-volt outlet in their homes so they can recharge in about seven hours.

Japan-based Nissan ini-tially sent only 10 Leafs to the U.S. and spokesman David Reuter said a second shipment of around 90 cars that arrived by cargo ship on Dec. 23 is on the way to deal-ers. Nissan won’t give esti-mates on how many Leaf se-dans it expects to sell in the U.S. next year, but says it has capacity to make 50,000 an-

nually at a plant in Oppama, Japan. Those will be sold in Japan, the U.S. and Europe.

The Volt goes about 40 miles on battery power alone before needing to be re-charged. But it comes with a backup gas engine that GM says can extend its range to 375 miles as it kicks in to re-charge the batteries on the fly. GM believes the backup generator will make it a hit with customers who worry about being stranded with a dead battery.

The Volts are being assem-bled in Detroit. GM predicts it will sell 10,000 of them in 2011 and between 35,000 and 45,000 in 2012. By way of comparison, Chevrolet sold 187,250 Malibu sedans in the first 11 months of the year with sticker prices that start at $21,975.

Hybrids made up 2.4 per-cent of U.S. sales this year and the category that includes hybrids and electric cars is expected to double to 4.8 percent by 2013, according to consumer web site Edmunds.com. But electric vehicles likely will be only a small part of this total, said Michelle Krebs, senior analyst at Ed-munds, and she doubts they will be big money makers for the car companies.

Closing earlyRumors that GM may end

on Jan. 3 the $350-a-month lease promotion it began ad-vertising this summer sent some Volt buyers scrambling to close early. Peter Schleck, an attorney in Rockville, Md., knows his Volt is head-ing towards Maryland on a

freight train. But he’s already signed the papers making him its official owner.

GM spokesman Rob Peter-son says the Volt lease terms “will extend into 2011, but I don’t have the specifics on how long it will be out there.” He added that the company expects to honor the deal for people who have already put down a deposit.

Paul and Cari Sykes of Fort Worth, Texas, made a $1,000 deposit on a Volt ear-lier this month, expecting to pay $350 a month for a lease. They know their car is on its way — theirs was the 724th built — and they are both ex-cited and worried that they may have acted a bit irra-tionally. They’ve never pur-chased a car at sticker price before, nor have they bought

a car sight unseen. They’ve never driven the Volt. The closest they came was when the buyer of the first Volt in Granbury, Texas, let them join him in a test drive. As passengers.

“I’ve never done anything like this before,” Cari Sykes said. “I hope I can say three years from now that I was part of the transformation, and will be ready to buy the next generation.”

Felix Kramer is doing his part to boost electric car sales. The Redwood City, Calif., resident picked up his white Chevy Volt last week, and he is on the waiting list for a Nissan Leaf. Kramer is the founder of CalCars.org, a group promoting devel-opment of cars that get 100 mpg or more.

He said his family put 350 miles on the odometer in the first week and used only 2.4 gallons of gas. He’s averag-ing about 35 miles on electric power per charge, right in the middle of the 25 miles to 50 miles he was expecting.

His son Josh, 20, was driv-ing the Volt around town and was followed home off the freeway by a state troop-er. Rather than giving him a ticket, the trooper peppered him with questions about the car.

Kramer said he’s im-pressed by how quickly the Volt accelerates from a stop or on the highway. His only complaint: the loud beeping noise when the car is in re-verse. “I’m going to find out if there’s some way to change that,” he said.

Behind the Wheel

Nissan’s new Juke is definitely differentBy ANN M. JOBFor ThE ASSociATEd PrESS

The name isn’t the only thing that’s different about Nissan’s new, small, tall Juke hatchback.

New for 2011, the five-seat Juke looks bigger than it is and has odd-ball front styling. Round headlights can be mistaken for fog lamps and turn signal lights are positioned so high by the hood they can be seen from the front seat.

The only engine in the relatively lightweight Juke is Nissan’s first-in-the-United-States direct-in-jection, turbocharged four cylin-der that generates an impressive 188 horsepower and uses premium gasoline.

The decidedly distinctive per-sonality of the Juke as well as the affordable purchase price are likely attractions for buyers.

Starting manufacturer’s sug-gested retail price, including desti-nation charge, is $19,760 for a base, Juke S with front-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that operates for the driver like an automatic.

Buyers must pay more to pair the turbo four cylinder with a six-speed manual transmission. Start-ing MSRP, including destination charge for a 2011 Juke with manual and front-wheel drive is $21,060.

Meantime, the lowest-priced all-wheel drive Juke starts at $21,260 and has a CVT. All-wheel drive Jukes come only with CVT.

Juke competitorsJuke competitors run the gamut

from boxy small cars to small sport utility vehicles.

The 2011 boxy, five-door Kia Soul, which has virtually the same outer dimensions as the Juke, has a starting MSRP, including destina-tion charge, of $13,995 with manual transmission and 122-horsepower, naturally aspirated four cylinder.

Another competitor, the 2011 Hyundai Tucson sport utility ve-hicle that’s 9 inches longer from bumper to bumper and a couple inches wider than the Juke, has a starting retail price of $19,540 with manual transmission and $20,540 with automatic. Base engine in the Tuscon is a 165-horsepower natu-rally aspirated four cylinder.

Don’t be surprised if people label the Juke differently. It looks like a small SUV, and riders sit up a good bit from the pavement, which is nice.

But the federal government’s fuel rating agency, the U.S. Environ-mental Protection Agency, labels the Juke a small station wagon, and many journalists describe the Juke as a hatchback, albeit a bit taller and beefier-looking than other hatchbacks.

Test vehicleThe test Juke was a mid-range

SV trim model with all-wheel drive and topped out, with option-al navigation system, at just under $24,000.

I admit I never really warmed to the Juke’s front styling, and the ve-hicle’s side profile looks a bit un-balanced, too.

Designers for the Juke were pri-marily in Nissan’s European offices and worked with the Japan studio. Nissan, headquartered in Japan, is partnered with France’s Renault auto company, and the Juke styling wouldn’t have surprised me a bit if it was on a Renault.

Once I got inside the Juke, the outer appearance was no big deal as the Juke’s 3,183 pounds was nicely balanced and controlled, even in aggressive driving. There was comfortable steering, too _ not too light and not too heavy.

The torque-vectoring all-wheel drive can shift power from front to rear wheels and to a single wheel to aid in steering and control.

With all-wheel drive turned on, the test Juke swept around moun-tain curves with poise, and body motions were well managed. Han-dling was pleasant in the city, too.

Parking with easeThe Juke’s turning circle is a

small-car-like 37 feet, and the tidy size of the 13.5-foot-long Juke meant I squeezed into parking spaces easily.

Metal pillars, though, at the sides of the Juke windshield and at the sides of the back window were noticeably thick and blocked my views as I made left turns and backed out of parking spaces, re-spectively.

I grew tired of feeling most road

imperfections coming through to passengers and hearing noises from the road _ loud clunks over manhole covers and sounds of passing trucks. There didn’t seem to be much sound insulation in the test Juke.

I heard the Juke’s 1.6-liter, di-rect-injection, turbo engine, too, and enjoyed its spunk.

It was strong enough that with the Juke tester in front-wheel drive, I noticed torque steer _ the unnerving tug of the steer-ing wheel to one side or the other when the car started up forcefully from a stop.

Note that all-wheel drive Jukes come with a button that can lock the system in front-wheel drive.

Torque steer abated but didn’t completely disappear during ag-gressive driving when I stayed in all-wheel drive, which I did most of the time.

This all-wheel drive system in the Juke can apply as much as 50 percent of the torque to rear wheels to help maintain traction, and did a good job on slick pavement during the test drive.

Mileage, however, was disap-pointing, at 21.6 miles per gallon in combined city/highway travel that was 65 percent city driving. The federal government rating for the all-wheel drive Juke is 25/30 mpg.

Complicating this fuel usage is the fact pricey premium gasoline is recommended in the Juke for best engine performance. So, a fillup of the Juke’s 13.2-gallon tank can cost more than $40 at today’s prices, and my range, given my mileage,

was some 285 miles. The back seat, with only 32.1

inches of legroom, can feel cramped for long-legged riders. But windows on the rear doors go down all the way, and rear seat-backs split and fold down to pro-vide nearly 36 cubic feet of rear storage space.

Front and rear seats feel like hard, yet supportive, foam, and there was little in the test Juke SV that conveyed luxury or plushness.

Associated Press

The decidedly distinctive personality of the Juke, as well as the affordable purchase price, are likely attractions for buyers.
