Australian Children’s books shine in the lead up to Bologna
Book Fair 2014 Last week saw significant international acclaim for Australian Children’s picture
book creators and publishers represented in the 2014 Hello! From Australia rights
exhibition at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.
This annual exhibition is an initiative of The Australian Publishers Association and
Books Illustrated, supported by the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund.
The selected children’s books and their illustrations were revealed to the wider
publishing industry through the online catalogue and rights guide.
Since the catalogue went live, Scribe Publications’ first picture book, Amazing Babes,
has landed a 6-page feature in the Italian edition of Marie Claire (March 14), and is
sure to be a highlight of visiting publishers and agents. This unique picture book,
beautifully designed and illustrated, celebrates inspirational women from around the
world and across generations.
Berbay Publishing has been shortlisted for the 2014 Bologna Prize for Best Children's
Publishers of the Year. Their picture book, What’s Your Story? about the colonial
settlement of Australia, is illustrated by Bern Emmerichs using hand-painted ceramic
tiles.
The Prize recognises publishers at the forefront of innovation. Berbay Publishing is
one of four Australian publishers nominated alongside Allen & Unwin, Hinkler
Books and Walker Books Australia.

Illustrator Bruce Whatley’s work has also been accepted into the prestigious Bologna
Illustrators' Exhibition and will be included in the Illustrators Annual 2014. Bruce
will be attending the fair and a guest on the Hello from Australia’s creators’ table
where he will be demonstrating each day.
