homEStayS aND SErviCE lEarNiNg are two of the most impor-tant components of student life at the ASC.

Be ready to live with a family who speaks your language but operates nothing like your own. There is no better way to dive into the intricate dif-ferences between North American and Australian cultures than to have the opportunity to exchange ideas, stories, and questions with an Australian family every night at the dinner table. Come flexible and teachable, and you’ll build relationships that stretch your thinking and your faith.

Also, learn from those who exist outside the powerful social circles of society by participating in ASC’s service-learning placements, which may include: inner-city youth programs, homes for the mentally and physically disabled, aged-care facilities, soup kitchens, and coffee and food vans for the homeless community in Sydney. Following the example of Christ, discover the beauty in sharing life together with some of the most undervalued members of society.

Do you havE a paSSioN for miNiStry, theology or counseling? Are you willing to dive into new experiences, even when they are awkward or uncom-fortable? Are you prepared to put aside your assumptions about the way cultures and societies should function? Are you open to thinking critically about the weak-nesses (as well as strengths) of your home country and its government? Whether you’re getting your degree in the arts or theology or just want to take a hip-hop or photography class to fulfill an elective, Australia and the ASC are waiting to help you think “outside the bubble” while nurturing your talents and creativity.

from thE BuStlE aND Buzz of thE Big City to the barren beauty of the Outback, Australia is a land like none other. The city of Sydney will be your home base and your textbook for the semester. Delve into its seedy history and learn firsthand what has made it the post-Christian, cosmopolitan, multi-cultur-al city it is today. Ride the ferries, comb the beaches, and take in a concert at the Opera House all in one day. Discover the coastal and bush trails that are nestled throughout this sun-soaked city. Take class field trips to the political capital of Canberra, the red earth of the Outback, and the rolling hills of New Zealand. It’s all how you learn what life is like Down Under at the ASC. The Australia Stud-ies Centre partners with Wesley Institute, a performing arts/theology college located in the suburb of Drummoyne on the famous Sydney Harbour, 15 minutes by taxi from the city center.

As often as possible, the ASC takes students out of the actual classroom and into the larger classroom that is the city of Sydney. Harbor cruises, bushwalks, and visits to museums and the Parliament House of New South Wales, all give students firsthand experience of Australian culture as it happens.

CaNBErra

The unique, modern capital city of Australia is home to the nation’s political powers and some of its finest art. On the ASC trip, students may spend one day engaging Aboriginal activists and diplomats at foreign embassies and the next examining a Jackson Pollock at The National Gallery.

Hundreds of miles from the nearest skyscraper, the flat, ancient, red earth of Outback New South Wales plays host to the ASC. On over 200,000 acres of semi-arid, sheep-raising property, students learn about how the Australian land shapes culture and how culture shapes the land.

NEW zEalaND

In one of the most scenic landscapes in the world, ASC students learn about the history and culture of the Maori people, the indigenous people of the islands of Aotearoa (New Zealand). An overnight stay on a family marae (a sacred Maori meeting place) highlights the experiential learning of this trip.

homEStayS aND SErviCE lEarNiNg are two of the most impor-tant components of student life at the ASC.
