Br. Marcos Professes Solemn VowsAbbey Welcomes Two Novices

Br. Marcos Rivas OSB, 32 years old, professed his Solemn Vows as a monk of Marmion Abbey on July 11, the Solemnity of Saint Benedict. He is a native of Columbia, where he com-pleted his secondary and university education. He received a degree in counseling in the year 2002 from Saint Buenaven-tura University in Medellin, Columbia.

After working for two years, 2002-03, in Columbia as a counselor with patients in a hospital, Br. Marcos came to the United States in 2004 affi liated with the Priests of the Sacred Heart seeking a vocation to the consecrated life. Af-ter seven months of intensive English language studies at Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners WI, he lived with them in Chicago from 2005 – 2006 as a candidate. During this time he also studied one year of Philosophy at St. Xavier University, Chicago. However, he realized dur-ing this time that his vocation was not with them but to the monastic life. Through a friend, he came to know Marmion. He entered Marmion Abbey in May of 2006 and made his novitiate from July 2006 – July 10, 2007 when he professed temporary vows.

During this past semester, Br. Marcos completed his pastoral internship program, a requirement at Mundelein Seminary during Second Theology. As a part of this program he gave

an adult Bible study class at Annunciation parish, partici-pated daily in one of Fr. Joel’s junior theology classes, and did an assortment of other things such as giving some voca-tion talks. He also took two classes at Mundelein during this time. The internship also provided Brother Marcos with the opportunity to participate more fully in the life of the Abbey. He will continue his theological studies at Mundelein this fall.

The Marmion monks also welcomed two novices, Fr. Mi-chael Solazzo and Seth Brown, on July 10. They received the Benedictine monastic habit during a traditional ceremony that took place during First Vespers of the Solemnity of St. Benedict.

Fr. Michael Solazzo, a 59 year old native of Cicero, was or-dained to the priesthood in 1976 for the Archdiocese of Chi-cago. Since ‘76 he has worked in four parishes, most recently as pastor of St. Mary’s in Evanston (2000–10), was full-time chaplain for the Misericordia Home (1992-2000) and has been, since ‘92, the chaplain for the Benedictine Sisters at Saint Scholastica Monastery in the Archdiocese In 2004 he became an Oblate of St. Benedict at St. Scholastica’s and since 2004 he has been regularly visiting Marmion Abbey. He has been discerning entering the Abbey for a long time.

Seth Brown, 27 years old, was born into a Baptist family and was received into the Catholic Church at age 21. He entered the pre-theology program at Mundelein Seminary in 2007, where he has been until now a seminarian for the Diocese of Springfi eld. He has now successfully completed his fi rst year of Theology, after two years of pre-theology studies at Mundelein. In February this year he received the Ministry of Reader at Mundelein Seminary

Father John Thomas Brahill OSB ’67 was elected the fifth ab-bot of Marmion Abbey by his fellow Benedictine monks on Friday, June 25. After his election and acceptance, Abbot Pe-ter Eberle OSB, the Abbot President of the Benedictine Swiss-American Congregation, immediately confirmed his election. Bishop Thomas G. Doran, Bishop of the Diocese of Rockford, will celebrate the Mass for the “Blessing of an Abbot” on Wednesday, August 11, at 10:30 a.m. in the Abbey Church of St. Augustine of Canterbury.

“It is humbling to know that the monastic community has placed its trust in me to serve both as abbot of Marmion Ab-bey and as the President of Marmion Academy,” said Abbot John. “I accept this great responsibility in a spirit of faith in God’s divine guidance and in a spirit of obedience to Christ and to His Church, although I must also admit with trepi-dation. I also know that I am supported by my brothers in the monastery as well as by many, many good people in the Academy, by alumni, parents, students, and all of Marmion’s very dear friends. I count on your support.”

Monks Elect Abbot John Brahill, OSB ‘67

Abbot John Brahill OSB ‘67 was elected the fi fth Abbot of Marmion Abbey on June 25, 2010. Abbot John most recently served as the Assistant Development Director after serving 17 years as the Prior of Marmion’s Guate-mala Mission.

“I accept this great responsibility in a spirit of faith in God’s divine guidance and in a spirit of obedience to Christ and to His Church.”

Abbot John (age 61) was the Prior of Marmion’s mission Priory of San Jose’ in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, for seven-teen years (1992 – 2009). In this past year he was the Novice and Junior Master of the Abbey and the associate director of development of the Abbey and Academy. Previous to his missionary years, Abbot John was the academic dean and an instructor of theology at the Academy.

Abbot John grew up in Bensenville, the son of Lucille and the late Joseph Brahill. He has one older brother, Michael ‘64. After graduating in 1967 as a resident student at Mar-mion, Abbot John received a B.S. degree in biology from St. Louis University. He worked in private industry until en-tering Marmion Abbey in 1977. He professed his vows as a Benedictine monk on August 6, 1978. He did his theological studies at St. Meinrad School of Theology, St. Meinrad IN, and Sant’ Anselmo University in Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 5, 1982.

Abbot John succeeds Abbot Vincent Bataille OSB who served for eighteen years. Earlier Marmion abbots include the founding abbot, Abbot Gerald Benkert OSB (now 100 years old), the late Abbot Mark Hogan OSB and Abbot David Cyr OSB ’44.

Abbot John is the major religious superior for 38 Benedictine monks (26 priests, ten brothers and two novices), with 32 at the Abbey and five at the mission Priory in Guatemala. As abbot, he is also the President of Marmion Academy. Twelve monks are involved with the Academy as teachers and ad-ministrators. Marmion monks are also pastors at Annuncia-tion Parish and St. George Romanian Catholic Parish, both in Aurora

Fr. Damien Daprai OSB died suddenly on a bright June morning in 2010 while jogging on the Abbey and Academy grounds. He was 46 years old, a monk for six years and a priest for two years.

He was born in Libya on July 1, 1963, and was baptized with the name of Anthony at the Base Chapel in New York where his father was in the military. Fr. Damien was the oldest of four children born to Frederick Daprai, D.D.S., and Mary Horgan Andrews. He attended school in Grand Blanc, Michigan where he grew up. He attended the University of Michigan at Flint, as well as Baker College in Flint. For a time he studied for the priesthood at Mount St. Mary Seminary in Emmitsburg MD as a candidate for the Diocese of Fargo ND.

While contemplating a change to the Diocese of Rockford he became acquainted with Marmion Abbey. He professed vows as a monk of Mar-mion Abbey on July 11, 2004, taking the name of Damien in honor of St. Damien of Molokai. Fr. Damien was ordained to the priesthood on

May 10, 2008, by Bishop Arthur O’Neill, the retired bishop of Rockford.

For the two years after his ordination Fr. Damien was a teacher of theology and physical education at Marmion Academy and a friend of youth. He was an eager worker in the Abbey Christmas Tree Farm, as well as a caretaker of the Abbey and Academy grounds. An avid athlete, he played golf and other sports. His main athletic interest since childhood was hockey. He looked forward to vacations when he and his brother would take to the ice.

Fr. Damien will be remembered as a fond foster son of St. Joseph, as well as a loving son of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Monthly he led the Abbey Oblates and friends in the recitation of the Rosary before Community Mass. Fa-ther’s Visitation and Funeral Mass, probably the largest attendance in the Abbey’s history, saw many of his priest friends and seminary classmates, parents, and Marmion students and young alumni

Fr. Bede Stocker OSB, age 94, a founding member of Marmion Abbey, died peacefully in the Lord at St. Patrick Residence in Na-perville on Tuesday, July 13, 2010. When he died, he was holding a Rosary in one hand and in the other was a sprig from an ever-green from the Marmion tree farm. This was a perfect testament to his commitment to mo-nastic life and “Ora et Labora.”

Fr. Bede was one of eight children born to Francis Xavier Stocker and Christina Bau-erle. He is survived by the members of his monastic community and many nieces and nephews survive him.

Fr. Bede was born on February 18, 1916 and was baptized by the name of Otto at St. Boni-face Church, Evansville, Indiana. He entered St. Meinrad Abbey in 1936 and professed his first vows there on August 6, 1937, tak-ing the name Bede. Fr. Bede was ordained to the priesthood on May 26, 1942 in the St. Meinrad Abbey Church in St. Meinrad, Indi-ana. In 1947 he transferred his vows to the new Marmion Abbey, becoming a founding member.

+Fr. Bede Stocker, OSBAfter ordination Fr. Bede served in the print-ery of St. Meinrad Abbey. Before coming to Marmion in 1947 he also served as Assistant Pastor at St. Ferdinand Church in Ferdinand, Indiana. On coming to Marmion Abbey in 1947 he taught for several years at Marmion Academy. His major contribution to the ab-bey community was as Novice Master and Superior of the young monks of the abbey. He served in this capacity for 20 years. He thus was responsible for the formation of several decades of Marmion monks. He served for two years as Associate Pastor of Annuncia-tion Church in Aurora.

In the early years of the development of the Abbey and Academy Fr. Bede was respon-sible for the landscaping of the property and creating the beautiful groves of trees and plants around the campus. In 1970 he was appointed Superintendant of the Christmas Tree farm and served in this capacity for the next 36 years. He was a faithful monk and devoted to his monastic community

Marmion has earned the title “Best U.S. Army JROTC Aca-demic Bowl team in the country”! The team of Edward Malnar, Spencer Buyansky, Mitchell Heaton and John Rios claimed victory in the Academic Bowl portion of the Army JROTC Junior Leadership and Academic Bowl competition held June 25-29 on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax VA.

Students Win National Title in Academic BowlThe competition began last December with Army JROTC teams in more than 1,000 high schools competing in an on-line competition. It is the nation’s largest academic bowl and leadership symposium for high school students worldwide. In the second round, held in January, Marmion fi nished fi rst place in its Brigade (120 schools) to win a place in the cham-pionship round and an all-expense paid trip to Washing-ton D.C. In these fi rst two rounds, students were tested on standard HS curriculum: Math, Science, English, specifi cally what they see on SAT and ACT tests, including leadership skills and current events. Marmion Academy was one of only 24 schools in the Nation to advance to the National Champi-onship round.

At the National Championship preliminary round, each team played ten “head-to-head” matches with pairings determined by a random draw. The matches were played in a “Jeopardy” game show format. After the completion of the preliminary round, the top twelve teams advanced to the single elimina-tion championship round. Marmion fi nished the preliminary round with a record of 10-0 and was seeded #1, earning a bye for the fi rst round (Seeds 1 thru 4 earned fi rst round byes). Marmion then went 3-0 in the fi nal rounds to win the Na-tional Championship against Lowell HS from San Francisco CA. “The team’s victory in this unbelievably competitive National competition is a real testament to the quality of our students at Marmion and the superb classroom instruction they receive from all of our teaching staff," said MAJ Mark Emerson, USA, the team advisor and SAI at Marmion

Marty and Eve Loftus ‘69 traveled to Marmion from Santa Fe NM to receive the Ad Regnum Dei Award. Marty was recognized for his 30-year career working for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Alumnus Martin Loftus ‘69 of Santa Fe NM was honored as the fi fth recipient of the Ad Regnum Dei Award at an All-School Mass on March 25. This award is given to an alum-nus in recognition of exceptional public wit-ness and service of Gospel values for the kingdom of God. Marty had a thirty-year career working for the betterment of humanity with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). His desire to serve, which he at-tributes to his parents John and Julie Loftus, began with service in the U.S. Peace Corps in Tominian, Mali, West Africa in the mid-70s. After earning his Masters from the School for International Training in Brattle-boro VT, he worked as a Program Assistant for Catholic Relief Services in Beirut, Leba-non. It was in Lebanon that he began his long career with UNHCR. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, his work with refu-gees also took him to fi eld posts in Lebanon, Somalia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Kuwait and Kosovo.

Serving as a Program Offi cer in Mogadishu, Somalia from 1983-85, he organized pro-grams to meet the basic food, shelter, water, education and related needs of the hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian refugees from the Ogaden region who sought asylum in Soma-lia. Most recently he served as Chief of Mis-sion in Pristina, Kosovo from 2006-08. There he managed the UNHCR’s operation in the national offi ce and fi ve fi eld offi ces totaling approximately 100 staff members. The op-eration concentrated mainly on refugee and IDP (internally displaced persons) returnee programs and protection activities during the politically charged run-up and aftermath of the Kosovo government’s declaration of independence from Serbia in early 2008. Loftus retired from UNHCR in 2009 and now resides in New Mexico with his wife, Eve, a medical doctor. Their three children have followed their father’s example of ser-vice and humanitarianism. Their daughter has recently completed an internship for the United Nations while their two sons have undertaken volunteer programs for Ameri-corps/Vista in inner city Chicago

Salute to YouthThe 48th annual Salute to Youth was held at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace on April 24, 2010. It was co-chaired by Pat-rick and Marilyn Naughton ’78. The theme was “A Legacy of Leadership and Service.” There were 614 alumni, trustees, patrons, seniors and their escorts in attendance. It was the social highlight of the Marmion school year with the Greg Thompson Orchestra performing throughout the evening.

The Marmion Alumni Association was honored for its over seventy years of work on behalf of Marmion Academy. The Alumni Association was established in 1938-39 and has raised $1,077,200 for Academic Scholarships and $300,000 in fi nancial assistance on behalf of alumni legacy students who attend Marmion.

In Abbot Vincent Bataille’s remarks, he honored the Mar-mion Alumni Association by announcing that henceforth the Marmion gymnasium would be known as “Alumni Hall” for the Association’s over 70 years of service and support to Mar-mion Academy. Brian Lentz ’89, Alumni Chairman, thanked the Marmion Board of Trustees and the Parents’ Club for honoring the Association and spoke of the accomplishments and plans of the Alumni Association.

The Student Speaker was Jeffrey McLean ’10. Jeff spoke to several themes that ring true of Marmion. He spoke of be-ing a third generation living legacy of Marmion and of the leadership skills that are learned through academics, athlet-ics and the daily interaction between teachers and students..

Jeff gave credence to Marmion as providing a base of Chris-tian values through spiritual leadership. He praised the monks of Marmion Abbey through their example of living a spiritual life through prayer and service.

In his concluding remarks, Jeff asked: “What will our legacy be? When we’re gone, how will we have made a difference? By living out Christian leadership and service – as true Mar-mion men – we can be sure that our actions do make a dif-ference.”

Eric Schwendner ’01 was the Student Master of Ceremonies and he introduced the senior students and their escorts who went through the “arch of sabers” before being presented to those in attendance.

This year’s Salute to Youth netted over $208,000 to benefi t Marmion’s educational programs.

The 49th Salute to Youth Dinner is scheduled for April 16, 2011. To be put on the mailing list for the 2011 event call the Marmion Development Offi ce at (630) 897-6936, ext. 244. To view additional photos from the event visit Marmion’s online photo gallery at www.marmionacademy.smugmug.com

AthleticsAfter last year’s 22-4 record (13-1 conference champions), the Cadets bounced back from a rocky start this spring and fi n-ished 22-12 (12-4 conference champions).

Marmion clinched the Suburban Christian Conference Blue title with a victory over Montini. Senior Bobby Winkel hom-ered and drove in three runs. Senior Chris Tydd had three hits including a triple and a RBI.

In the Oswego Regional semi-fi nals, junior Tim Tarter domi-nated Sandwich with nine strikeouts in fi ve innings. Leadoff man Tydd scored 4 times and Winkel drove in 4 runs to high-light the 14-3 victory. Marmion was victorious in the Regional fi nal with an exciting 10-8 victory over host Oswego that was made possible by an eight-run fourth inning.

In the DeKalb Sectional semi-fi nals, an unbelievable game-ending catch by senior Mark Peters, as he tumbled over the left center fi eld fence, saved the day and gave the Cadets a spine-tingling 7-6 victory over Burlington Central. A fan vid-eo of the catch is linked from the Marmion Facebook page.

In the Sectional fi nal uncharacteristic errors wiped out a 5-3 sixth inning lead and led to a season ending 6-5 defeat at the hands of DeKalb, who took second in State Class AA.

The Bass Fishing team started the season by finishing 2nd in the Fall Shabbona Lake Tournament with senior captain Andy Oesterlin catching the leading bass for the Cadets. In October the team helped the Shabbona Lake DNR with a re-location project and enjoyed an invitation to fish at the Rich Harvest Farms Golf Course. The team was also invited to fish at the Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation with sophomore David Thielen breaking the team record with a 5.3 lb. bass, only to be outdone moments later by his freshman brother Jon, who caught one weighing over 6 lbs.

The team helped the DuPage Forest District Park Rangers build new structures for the fishing lakes and in January at-tended a private semi-nar conducted by world-class bass angler Michael Iaconelli. Marmion en-tered two 3-man teams in the Sectional at Shab-bona Lake. The team of sophomores Brad War-land, Nick Nasharr and Casey Smith finished 5th out of 19 teams and missed qualifying for the state meet by .45 of a pound despite tying for the most “keeper” bass with four

Tennis Claims Conference Title

The future success of the 2010 tennis team’s season was founded on the strong senior leadership of Lucas Brandt, Mike Deufel, John Mason and Chris Soris and the improved play of junior Bubba Weiler, sophomores Jeff Garofalo and Mitch Heaton and freshman Joe Mendoza. When the Cadets defeated Oswego East 7-0 in their season-opening match, little did they know that this would be the fi rst of nineteen consecutive victories against area opponents!

Marmion was also impressive with fi rst place fi nishes in the 8-team Yorkville Doubles Tournament and the Batavia Quad as well as the SCC Championship Tournament. Marmion also fi nished second in both the Geneva (losing by one point) and Lockport tournaments.

Seven Cadets were named to the Suburban Christian Con-ference All-Conference Team: seniors Brandt, Deufel, Mason, Soris, junior Weiler, sopho-mores Bill Graft and Chris Pat-terson along with freshman Jackson Rettig. Brandt was this year’s recipient of the Fa-ther Columban Achievement Award.

The doubles team of Weiler and Mason were named to the Kane County Chronicle’s All-Area Boys’ Tennis Team. They took third place in the Sectional and advanced to the State meet

Senior Zack Young fi nished 5th in the State Meet in the 1600 meter race.

Lacrosse Competes at Varsity Level

Over the three short years that Coach Kevin Griffi n has led the lacrosse program, it has grown from a team of twenty-four players to a program with three levels and sixty players. Lacrosse has not yet been recognized and sanctioned by the IHSA and it remains a club sport at Marmion. In its fi rst year of competition at the varsity level there were some growing pains, but the focus needs to be on the level of commitment that is needed by players, parents, coaches, boosters and Marmion to support this emerging program.

This past January Coach Griffi n conducted a conditioning program that emphasized team building, weightlifting and conditioning. Because of the successful fundraising events sponsored by parents of lacrosse players, the team was able to purchase 65 brand new sets of uniforms and equipment. These same parents helped the club host its own 18-team la-crosse tournament, run two car washes and organize a year-end function and awards night at the Kane County Cougar Stadium.

In an effort to bring attention to this new athletic offering, the team marched in the St. Charles St. Patrick’s Day parade. The team also donated time to “Feed My Starving Children” and completed enough food packages to feed 69 children around the world for a year

In the NewsLarry English, San Di-ego Chargers defensive end/linebacker and 2009 fi rst round draft pick, re-turned to his high school alma mater on June 5 for the inaugural Cadet Foot-ball Clinic. Youth football players and coaches, par-ents and fans were invited to hear English’s and NIU Head Coach Jerry Kill’s motivational talks.

Larry English, rookie star of the Chargers, addressed the work ethic, dedication and commitment needed to play in the NFL. English grew up in Aurora and at-tended St. Rita Catholic Grade School. He was a star football, basketball and track athlete at Mar-mion Academy. English received a NCAA football scholarship to Northern Illinois University, where he was an outstanding player for four years. During his collegiate career, he was a two-time Mid-American Conference Vern Smith Leadership Award winner and the 2008 MAC Defensive Player of the Year. English

was also chosen as the Most Inspirational Player on the 2008 Huskie team and named NIU’s 2008-09 Male Athlete of the Year. He now holds the title as the highest draft pick in the school’s history. Coach Kill shared his tech-niques for motivating his players and the hard work and passion it takes to achieve lofty goals. Kill assumed the role of NIU head coach for the 2008 season. His previous po-sition was the head coach of Southern Illinois University, where Kill guided the Salu-kis to three-straight Gateway Conference Championships and Division I-AA Playoff appearances

Marmion’s Schroeder Snipers took sixth place in the scholastic division at the three position precision air rifl e National Junior Olympics, sponsored by the Civilian Marksmanship Program, in Anniston AL in July.

The competition marked the culmination of the indoor season. Each State was permitted to send qualifying teams to the com-petition in either the club division or scholastic division. Mar-mion’s Schroeder Snipers qualifi ed in the scholastic division by winning the State CMP championship qualifying match in February.

The team members participating at the Junior Olympics con-sisted of Ryan Novack, Chaz Leonard, Joseph Munder and Jake Stein.

The competitors fi red two shoulder-to-shoulder matches over three days, July 8-10. The fi ring points are 10 meters from the tar-gets, which are less than two inches wide. The bullseye (center) is smaller than a pencil eraser in size. Individually, Chaz Leon-ard fi nished in the top 50, Ryan Novack and Joseph Munder in the top 100 and Jake Stein in the top 150 in the Nation. Schroed-er Snipers are coached by MSG (Ret.) As the dust settles and all the graduation festivities come to a close you are fi nding yourselves preparing your child for the next chapter. It is an exciting time especially for them, but as for the mothers (and fathers)...sometimes a diffi cult time. Please consider joining the Marmion Mom’s Prayer Group or the Men’s Faith Group to help navigate these times with prayer and fellowship.

The Men’s Faith Group is a new ministry which began in Febru-ary 2010. The group meets on the 3rd Saturday of each month in the Student Chapel at 6:45 am for coffee, donuts and fellowship, followed by a speaker on faith related topics geared toward the interests and challenges men face. The program concludes at 8:15am with the option to attend 8:30am Mass at the Abbey. All alumni, current and future parents are welcome. The moderator of this group is Fr. Michael Burrows OSB ‘70. 2010-2011 meeting dates are: 9/18, 10/16, 11/20, 1/15, 2/19, 3/19 and 4/16.

The Marmion Mom’s Prayer Group speaker series is available for all alumni, current/future Marmion moms and friends. The kick-off meeting is set for the evening of September 28 at the Student Chapel. The two retreat style events are held at the Nazareth Retreat Center in Batavia, each offering a morning and evening program. The Advent meeting is on November 11 and the Lenten evening meeting is on March 2, with a morning program March 3. The Regole family of St. Charles is cre-ating its legacy at Marmion Academy. Their leadership support in the last de-cade has allowed Marmion to name the Edward N. ’50 and Vivienne Regole Na-tatorium (2004), the John M. Regole ’63 Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund (2002), and the Maurice L. Regole, Jr. ’52 Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund (2006). The Edward N. ’50 and Vivienne Regole Science Center will be dedicated on September 9, 2010, and the Gertrude and Maurice L., Sr. and Edward N. ’50 and Vivienne Regole Field House will be dedicated in the fall of 2011.

This legacy was made possible through benefactions that now total over $9 million; truly a legacy singular in Marmion’s 76 year history.

Maurice and Gertrude were hard working daily farmers in St. Charles Township. They raised three sons (Edward ’50, +Maurice, Jr. ’52 and +John ’63) and three daughters (Viola, Barbara and Rosemary). John died of cancer in March 1964, eight months after graduating from Marmion. Maurice, Jr. was affl icted for years with M.S. and died in 2005. The family never forgot the pastoral kindness that Marmion’s Fr. Terence Stanton OSB ‘36 showed to them and their son John during the fi nal months before his death.

Another Regole family legacy is the property donated to the Rockford Diocese for St. John Neumann Parish in St. Charles, with the “St. John” being in memory of John Regole ‘63

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS(July 1, 2009 - June 30, 2010)

Faculty and Staff commitments to Campaign Marmion have topped $100,000. More than 78% of the faculty and staff made a commitment, and “we still have a few follow-up calls to complete,” report Campaign co-chairs Madelyn Weed and Joe Large ‘97.

Madelyn, a ‘95 Rosary graduate, is Marmion’s Director of Public Relations and Communications, and Joe teaches mathematics and serves as chairman of the math department and coach of the Math Team. Serving as co-chair-man was not Joe’s fi rst experience with fund raising; he also serves as a Class of 1997 Adjutant for the Alumni Annu-al Fund. Madelyn’s family ties to Mar-mion include three brothers who are graduates, James ‘97, Timothy ‘05 and Peter ‘08 Studlo, and her parents Dr. James and Sally Studlo are Life Mem-bers of the Abbot Marmion Society.

Even in these diffi cult economic times “we received a positive response on our calls,” said Madelyn. “One staff person is working three jobs just to make ends meet but wanted to make a commitment to the Campaign and Marmion, and it was a very generous one,” she added. The average of the 52 gift commitments was more than $1,900, with most selecting a fi ve-year pledge payment schedule.

Joe had similar reactions. “One person said they wanted to give something back to Marmion for all Marmion has done for him. Similar comments were repeated by a number of faculty and staff that I visited with. They enjoy being part of the Marmion community and want to see the Academy and com-munity continue to grow,” said Joe.

“The Campaign is now in its fi nal year,” said Father Charles Reichenbacher OSB, Director of Development. “This wonderful response from the Marmion family and particularly our faculty and staff colleagues is truly inspiring”

Shea Memorial Financial Aid Endowment By Fr. Charles Reichenbacher OSB ‘59 Director of Development

The late Ralph Weber ’39 of Aurora and his son, Thomas ’67 of St. Charles played important roles in bringing a major bequest of more than $707,000 to Marmion Academy. Ralph was a tax accountant and fi nancial advisor to Thomas and Marie Shea of LaGrange. Tom succeeded in his father’s role following Ralph’s death on July 23, 1999. Several years earlier Thomas Shea, who died in 1996, had established two trusts, one of which was designed for charitable purposes. Upon Thomas’ death, Mrs. Shea was given a “power of appointment” for charitable, scientifi c or educational institutions of her choos-ing as benefi ciaries.

Enter Ralph Weber. Mrs. Shea asked Ralph if he had any sug-gestions, and he asked her to consider Marmion Academy. Ralph noted her interest in helping students with fi nancial need, and also the Shea family’s connection to Wisconsin. Mr. Shea was raised in the Milwaukee area and attended the University of Wisconsin and later graduated fi rst in his class

from the Naval Academy. Mrs. Shea was raised in Bailey’s Harbor in Door County WI.

Mrs. Shea signed a codicil to her will naming Marmion Acad-emy the sole benefi ciary of the trust. It stipulated that the funds were to be used “to establish a scholarship fund for the benefi t of needy children with proven fi nancial need.” It further stipulated that “students graduating from Marmion and seeking a college degree in engineering at the University of Wisconsin system should be considered for aid and funds be made available to them from this fund.”

Marmion decided that rather than incorporate this magnifi -cent gift into the regular fi nancial aid endowment program, it would be designated for “fi nancial emergencies.” During the recent and continuing diffi cult economic times a number of students have parents who lost their jobs or suffered reduced income. Several of these students were juniors and seniors. Marmion offered them emergency aid so they could complete their Marmion education. The Thomas V. and Marie Shea Fund now will provide a more permanent source of these emergency funds

The Abbey Farms is getting a long-needed offi ce and storage building. A metal pole barn (36’wide x 60’ long x 12’ high) is being constructed in the fi eld north of the monastery building. The goal is have the building ready for the annual Pumpkin Daze Fall Festival in October and the Christ-mas Tree sales in November. The building will serve as the farm offi ce and be a warming center in fall and winter, a gift item sales center, and a storage area for farm equipment.

The cost is approximately $60,000 and is being paid for from gift funds, so that farm income can go directly for the support of the monks. Notable donors to date are Jim and Kris Anderson , Downers Grove; Pat Berg, Batavia; Frank and Joan Schwartz, Wheaton; Betty and Mary Sellen, Oswego; and the Wahmhoff family of Michigan. “Gifts are still needed…and appreciated…for this farm building and to purchase new farm equipment,” said Adam Voirin ’02, farm manager at [email protected] or (630) 936-0034

Marmion-Marquette Connection Strengthens Marmion Academy and Mar-quette University have had a special relationship for many years. Recently that connection grew stronger thanks to the gen-erosity of Gregory Kliebhan ’69, Mar-quette’s Senior and Corporate Vice Presi-dent, and his wife Linda.

Greg is among the nearly two hundred Mar-mion alumni who made Marquette their college choice. In some years as many as a dozen Marmion seniors enrolled at the Jesu-it university in Milwaukee. In fact the tradi-tion was so strong students were referring to Marquette as “Marmion North.” Marquette still ranks among the “fi rst choice” school for many Cadets applying to college.

As a Marquette alumnus and co-chief oper-ating offi cer of the university, Greg and his wife established an endowed scholarship fund at Marquette many years ago. “Mar-quette has a strong tradition of educating students who are the fi rst in their families to attend college, and Linda and I have asked that, in awarding our scholarship, fi rst generation students be given preference by Marquette’s Offi ce of Student Financial Aid, ” said Greg. Then after visiting with Fr. Charles, Greg and Linda decided that in addition to their on-going direct support of Marmion, they wanted to restate the crite-ria for their endowed scholarship specifying that awards from this fund be given to grad-uates of Marmion Academy with preference for students who are fi rst generation.

Greg has had a special interest in strength-ening the Marquette-Marmion connection in many other ways. He has taken time from his demanding schedule to personally wel-come Marmion graduates to the campus. One Marquette-Marmion graduate who was bringing his son to the Milwaukee campus for a tour was surprised when Kliebhan of-fered to be the guide. As the alumnus said, “Marmion sure has clout around here.” Greg also carried the Marquette message di-rectly to Marmion graduates in 2004 when he was the Commencement Speaker.
