VFC Alumni On The Job

We were excited recently to receive a photo from two former VFC students and in-structors. Jeff Bujas (left) and Jeff Lightheart (right) are both flying for Central Mountain Air, and had the opportunity to snap a quick photo between flights on a recent pairing where they were scheduled to fly together. These guys are great examples of the successful combination of solid training at VFC, and hard work out in the industry. Well done guys!

We are still looking for pho-tos of our successful (and good looking!) alumni to share with prospective student pilots. If you completed any of your training, or worked as an instructor, at VFC and you are presently working in the avia-tion industry (in a plane or on the ground) then we really want to hear from you! We couldn’t be any prouder of your achieve-ments and we would love to share that pride with our new visitors and students!

So don’t be shy! Take a smiley photo of you living the dream, and email it to: [email protected] Also, the next VFC Career Open House is scheduled for Saturday September 20th. Please accept this invitation to come visit as our special guests on that day. We would be thrilled to introduce you to our visitors and prospective new student pilots. Please RSVP to: the [email protected].

“Bombers, Burgers, Beer… and Bacon!”BBQ for Club Members, Staff, & B-25 Crew

By donation with proceeds going to fuel for the B-25Saturday, August 2, 2014 - 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The Victoria Flying Club is thrilled to host the Commemora-tive Air Force Airbase Arizona and their B-25J WWII Bomber, “Maid in the Shade,” from July 28 to August 3. The iconic aircraft will be on display for the public to tour through the aircraft, enjoy a flight, breath in the history, and learn about the unique roll these aircraft played in military aviation history. The B-25 Mitchell was made famous by the Doolittle Raid-ers on April 18, 1942. Sixteen B-25s took off from the deck of the USS Hornet and bombed Tokyo just four months after Pearl Harbour. This massive morale boost for the United States helped set the stage for the victories to come. The

B-25 served in many roles from bomber to transport. In the post-war years, it became best known for its role as a fire bomber. “We’re really excited to host the Commemorative Air Force and “Maid in the Shade,” said Victoria Flying Club president Ramona Reynolds, “It’s a great opportunity not only for our members to see an amazing historic aircraft, but we’re look-ing forward to welcoming the community in to see it as well.” “Maid in the Shade” will be available for public viewing from 8am to 4pm daily at the Victoria Flying Club. Cockpit tours are available for $5, or a family rate of $10. But for those looking to cross an item off their bucket

list, there are a limited number of flights available as well. The CAF was founded to acquire, restore and preserve in flying condition a complete collection of combat aircraft which were flown by all military services of the United States, and aircraft of other nations, for the education and enjoyment of present and future genera-tions. More than just a col-lection of airworthy warplanes from the past, the CAF’s fleet of historic aircraft, known as the CAF Ghost Squadron, recreate, remind and reinforce the les-sons from the defining moments in military aviation history. More information is available at: http://www.azcaf.org/pages/aircraft_bios/TB-25N_Mitchell.html

We’ll be celebrating Women in Avia-tion at the BC Aviation Museum, with vintage aircraft, live music, magic, and more! Tickets are available now at the Victoria Flying Club office, or online at Eventbrite.com. Search WAI (VI Chapter). This event is our first fund-raising event to raise funds for our outreach program and schol-arship fund. Sponsored by VFC, the BC Aviation Museum, and the Vic-toria Airport Authority, the event will feature live music by local duo McComb & Watson, wine and cheese, a cash bar, and some spectacular silent auction items! The reason we started the Vancouver Island Chapter of Women in Aviation was to create a progressive and safe commu-nity where inclusivity and equal-ity is a given; where we encour-age and support mentorship; and we provide opportunities for women and girls to develop and flex their leadership muscles. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of women in all aviation and aerospace ca-reer fields and interests. We provide year-round resources to assist women in aviation and to encourage young women to consider avia-tion as a career. WAI also offers educational outreach programs to educators, high school and university students, aviation industry members and young people. We are starting our outreach program with the Girl Guides and Pathfinders of Brit-ish Columbia so that they may attain their aviation badge as part of their Nationwide STEM Challenge. In addition, WAI pro-motes public understanding of the accomplishments and contri-butions of women in aviation.

Here’s how you can help! As a sponsor of $300 to $500 or more your organiza-tion would receive two free tickets to the event as well as inclusion on all of our adver-tising and promotion of the event, together with promo-tion at the event itself; and our undying devotion of course. If you would like to be a spon-sor, or if you have an exciting auction item to add to our growing list, please contact Ramona Reynolds at [email protected].

For flyout information:[email protected]

July’s meeting of COPA was held on the second Tuesday of the month; the first Tuesday was July 1st, Canada Day and the day of a very big flyout to Alert Bay. Twelve planes and about 25 people descended on the little town, a neat and charming place. This was a good outing of COPA members and VFC mem-bers, private and club aircraft. Hurray! Let’s have more of those flyouts. The July meeting featured a presentation by Rob Shemilt and

Dan Waldie, lots of photos and commentary about their 2013 Canada Day flight to Nelson, a bit of a tricky place to get into! The next COPA meeting will be Tuesday, August 5 at the Catalina Grill House on the north side. Come on out for a sum-mary of where the VAA & CYYJ in general are at. If anyone has concerns that we can’t immedi-ately answer we’ll do our best to take them back to the VAA and get factual answers. No more rumours necessary. As always, come early for dinner at 6 PM, meeting starts at 7 PM. Let us know if you will be dining there so restaurant staff will have a heads-up. For more information, email [email protected] - any-one interested in cool aviation talk is welcome to attend.

2014 Flyout Schedule

Aug 4th - Hope / PembertonSep 6th - OsoyoosOct 4th - Chilliwack / Rowena`sNov 11th - Boundary Bay / Delta Air ParkDec 20th - Abbotsford

A $20/hr rental discount on VFC aircraft will remain in ef-fect during these days, and a new fuel discount (for owners) is being implemented for any VFC member participating in these flyouts.

Ready to put those mountain flying skills to use?

Come out to our next flyout! On August 4th, we will be fly-ing up to Pemberton via Hope. The stop in Hope is optional but it will be an easy stop to get a ticket for the VFC BC Airport Challenge!

There is no fuel avaliable in Pemberton however Squamish or Hope have all the fuel we need.

We will be having lunch at Meadows Golf Course.

If you are interested in golfing, please let me know and we will try to get a group rate!

Karl Hoener created a great website to help plan future fly-outs. Please follow the link below to sign-up for the fly-out. http://flightstat.ca/FlightLog.dll/FlyOuts

It would be great if we can get everyone using this new sys-tem. Of course if you any ques-tions, you can always email [email protected]

Please note that we are just testing this new system and there might be bug or required improvements. Please email us with anything that needs fixing!
