Brown Convention Center in Houston, TX. Full registration for members is $359 if postmarked on or before Sep- tember 6, 2013 or $449 after Sep- tember 6, 2013. Dr Glenna McCollum, MPH, RDN President, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Standards of Professional Performance Reafrmed Dietetics Educators of Practitioners and American Dietetic Association Standards of Professional Performance for Registered Dietitians (Generalist, Specialty/Advanced) in Education of Dietetics Practitioners,originally pub- lished in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association in April 2009, has been reafrmed at this time and its review date has been extended until August 2015. The Nutrition and Dietetic Educators and Preceptors Dietetic Practice Group (DPG) will be utilizing the Academy of Nutrition and Dieteticsrevised 2012 Standards of Practice (SOP) and Standards of Professional Performance (SOPP) for RDs. EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES E-Learning Module on Vitamin D The alarming increase in vitamin D insufciency in the United States has ironically coincided with an increasing recognition that vitamin D likely has a broader contribution to the protection of health and prevention of disease than previously appreciated. This interactive self-study session will put into perspective the rapid decline in vitamin D status in the United States; the implications of vitamin D insuf- ciency on skeletal, inammatory, and metabolic health among the popula- tion; and practical guidelines for how to get vitamin D from diet, sun ª 2013 by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. ObituariesHonorary Member Dominic P.DePaola DiesDominic P. DePaola, DDS, PhD, whowas named an honorary member ofthe Academy in 2001, passed away onApril 16, 2013, at the age of 70. DePaolawas a leading researcher in the areaof nutrition and oral health, and atireless advocate for the inclusion ofdietetics practitioners in dental educa-tion, research, and practice.DePaola received a Bachelor of Sci-

ence degree from St Francis Collegeand a dental degree from the New YorkUniversity College of Dentistry. He

completed a general dentistry intern-ship at Beth Abraham Hospital in NewYork City and later earned a doctoratein nutritional biochemistry and meta-bolism from the Massachusetts Insti-tute of Technology. DePaolo served asdean of the Dental School at the Uni-versity of Texas Health Science Centerat San Antonio; the New Jersey DentalSchool at the University of Medicineand Dentistry of New Jersey; and theBaylor College of Dentistry, Dallas. Healso served as president and chiefexecutive officer of the Forsyth Groupin Boston and, at the time of hisdeath, was academic dean of the NovaSoutheastern University College ofDental Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, FL.DePaola was a leader in his field,

publishing dozens of scholarly articles,delivering more than 1,000 nationaland international lectures and educa-tion seminars, and serving as presidentof both the American Dental Education

Association and the American Associa-tion of Dental Research. In his workwith these organizations and others,such as the American Society of ClinicalNutrition, the National Academy ofSciences, and the International Associ-ation of Dental Research, DePaola was apioneer in his support of nutrition as acomponent of systemic and oral health.

Hildegard Knopp, RD, May 2013,was a member of the Academy, theKansas Dietetic Association, and theKansas City Dietetic Association formore than 50 years. After immigratingto the United States from Germany atage 14, she went on to earn a BS inDietetics from Kansas State Universityin 1944, and she was one the first di-etetic interns at the University of Kan-sas (KU) Medical Center. In 2008,Knopp received a Life Long LearningAward from the dean of the School ofHealth Professions at KU MedicalCenter.
