As we crept closer to August, I began to feel the pangs of summer’s end. The local stores already started bringing out school products and attire, along with al l of the lates t “essentials” for fall. My

mind quickly jumped to my school shopping to-do list, fall activity registrations and that crucial “first day of school” plan. How was I going to accomplish all of this before mid-August, and why did I wait until now to commence my school mode mantra?

It seems to me that the school year is beginning quite a bit earlier, yet not really ending early enough to compensate for lost time. I remember starting school the day after Labor Day. Guess those times are over? Summer is no longer a three month adventure; instead, a two month break with one to two weeks of ramp up time before school begins.

With that in mind, HB Magazine wanted to offer a bit of help for those of you with school-aged, or even college-aged, children. Take a look at Dr. Gerber’s article on “Protect Your Kids,” and peer into his thoughts on breakfast, Ritalin and immunizations. Peruse our Ingredient Watch and get the skinny on energy bars that are specifically targeting child consumers. Perhaps your purse strings are a little tight? Check out the “Back to School Buzz on Recycled Clothing,” and find ways to save on your school threads.

Regardless if August finds you desperately trying to complete your school-starting tasks, or if you’re still lazing by the pool with a peach iced tea in hand, we hope as the month comes to an end that you contentedly transition into fall.

EDITOR’SLETTER

Peaches are an appealing lot. Fuzzy and warm on the outside, with a sweet and juicy interior. If perfectly ripened, the flavor is splendid for a variety of edible options. Cobblers, pies, sauces and spreads, peaches add just enough sweetness, even complimenting the most savory fare.

Add a few peach slices to your salad. Or, use peach chunks and sauce to adorn a spicy grilled pork chop. Try adding cubed peaches to your garden salsa for a variety in your chip dipping experience.

No matter how you slice, dice or whip them into a pleasureful peachy puree, make sure to enjoy one of August’s finest treats. And if you happen upon the delight in picking a ripe peach right off the branch, make sure to indulge in every juice-dripping bite.

There’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a

sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

consume more of their product. The water company usually doesn’t have enough water rights to provide more, or would have to build additional purification plants if we all drank enough water. Even though 70 percent of our planet’s surface is water, 97 percent is salty sea water (oh to have those gills again) and two percent is frozen in the polar ice caps. Only the remaining one percent is potable/safely drinkable. So instead, the water company more than likely restricts your water consumption by especially limiting your lawn watering days and times.

There are even individuals who tell us we’re drinking too much water! Periodically some health expert will say that eight glasses a day is over kill. Recently even Dr. Oz told television viewers that since there is water in our food, we can substitute that for a few of our eight glasses. The problem with that is digestion requires water to get the water out of the food.

Additionally, it is startling to contemplate how much food would be necessary to constitute even three glasses of water. The water in our food is not a substitute--it’s a bonus.

Life on this planet began in the ocean and was based on the abundant water and salt of that environment. Later, when organisms were washed ashore or slithered out of the depths onto dry land, they abandoned gills and developed lungs for oxygen assimilation.

We are no longer surrounded by water to breathe and keep moist, so dehydration becomes a constant problem. Air is drier than water, so every breath carries precious H2O out of the body. Then the surrounding air leeches even more out through the skin. Now all plants, animals and humans exist in a state of transient dehydration. Peter Barbieri, respected Reno manual therapist who’s worked on thousands of human bodies says perhaps 90 percent of Americans are dehydrated to some extent. He explains that lack of water inhibits muscle elasticity, making them feel “sticky.” And far too many of us are seriously dehydrated.

“Eat your food. Brush your teeth. It’s time for bed.” But most parents do not say, “Drink your water.” That’s because their parents probably didn’t stress the body’s most important necessity next to oxygen. Americans suffer dehydration because of ignorance about the subject. Even your local water company does not urge you to

Chronic Pain and “Autoimmunities”

“I don’t really do well with most medications/herbs/botanicals. I eat better than most. I’ve been to every medical/alternative specialist there is. All of my testing is normal or severe. Nothing works, in fact, I’ve been getting worse.” In our chronic pain condition practice, whether it be diabetic or peripheral neuropathies, chronic fatigue, migraine, dizziness, vertigo, Fibromyalgia, thyroid issues, tremors, Restless Leg Syndrome and more, autoimmunities are one of the most over-looked and under-appreciated triggers and perpetuators of these debilitating conditions. It is often the biggest reason the case has failed and many patients seeking care in the health care system are suffering from undiagnosed autoimmunity.

Autoimmunity has become a vastly under-appreciated, growing epidemic. Autoimmunity is basically the loss of self-tolerance—or the ability of the immune system to recognize self-tissue (thyroid, pancreas, cartilages etc) from foreign or pathogenic organisms (bacteria, virus, parasite, etc.) thus leading to

Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B

immune attacks upon oneself. The loss of self-tolerance, and the development of autoimmunity, is a major reason why many individuals notice a rapid decline in their health and seek care with a health care professional. Unfortunately, autoimmunity leads to a destructive process to various tissues over several years, and an early autoimmunity may be easily over-looked in chronic pain patients in the current health care model.

In the current system, autoimmune disease is not diagnosed until the tissue has already been destroyed. In other words, an individual may have cartilage antibodies for several years and

growing epidemic.”

both. The battle is not the end organ, the thyroid, in this case. The battle is to calm down or modulate the immune system and to address everything that is causing it to attack the thyroid and produce the seemingly inconsistent symptoms above.

You could be looking at stress, blood sugar issues, chronic viral infections, yeast, mold, parasites, food allergies, the now, ever-popular “inflammation” of the body and more. The patient needs a thorough workup of their nervous system and entire biochemical system to determine which stressors are present, so that a strategy can be developed to support the patient’s overall health and effect non-drug management of their chronic conditions. This is functional medicine at its best, and is probably the reason so many functional medicine practices have such a large percentage of chronic pain patients comprising the bulk of their practices. Utilizing a comprehensive history and examination, along with specialized autoimmune testing, the functional medicine doctor generally will have a strong probability of ferreting out the diagnosis and appropriate non-drug treatment protocol for that patient and his or her condition.

suffer significant pain, but they will probably not be diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis until they have severe joint deformity. Another person may have subtle autoimmunity to myelin and present with diverse neurological symptoms (peripheral neuropathy, brain fog, anxiety, depression, etc.), but he or she will not be diagnosed because his or her MRI is “normal,” because it does not show “enough” destruction to be sensitive to MRI findings. It is not clear that the antibodies that attack self-tissue appear years before total tissue destruction is obvious, and during these years, clients suffer symptoms associated with this destruction process.

In today’s health care arena, it is not uncommon for a person suffering from the early stages of autoimmunity to seek consultation, and since they have “normal” blood labs and do not have total tissue destruction, are not diagnosed with any conditions. Often times these individuals end up seeking alternative medicine, as conventional medicine models offer them little support in the early stages. It is very important for chronic pain patients to seek health care professionals who are able to detect that patients are in early stages of undetected autoimmune expressions, and who are able to provide nutritional, dietary, neurological, and lifestyle modifications, protocols and strategies to support their overall health and to co-manage their cases.

Functional medicine doctors are among the most well-versed alternative practitioners addressing this vastly under-diagnosed and under-appreciated patient population. The battle for the autoimmune patient is the immune system—not the targeted tissue. In other words, if you have an autoimmune attack on your thyroid, you may express hypothyroid symptoms (tired/sluggish, cold hands and feet, gains weight easily and can’t lose it, depression, constipation) or hyperthyroid symptoms (heart palpitations, inward trembling, increased pulse even at rest, nervous and emotional) or in most cases, an alternation of

Have you been avoiding your dentist? When was last time you had your teeth cleaned? Do you notice blood in your saliva after brushing? It’s very important to maintain optimal oral health because of the “Oral-Systemic Link.” Oral pathogenic bacteria (bad bugs) don’t just stay in the crevices around your teeth—they enter your blood stream and travel to, and can affect, the rest of your body. It’s important to understand the intimate connection between your oral health and your overall health, and what you can do to protect yourself.

According to the Mayo Clinic, these common health concerns can be directly related to or affected by the health of your mouth:

• Pregnancy and birth — Gum disease has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight.

• Diabetes — Diabetes reduces the body’s resistance to in-fection, putting the gums at risk. In addition, people who have inadequate blood sugar control may develop more-frequent and severe infections of the gums and the bone that holds teeth in place, and they may lose more teeth than do people who have good blood sugar control. Vice versa, people with periodontal (gum) disease upsets the fine balance of blood sugar control that is so important to control diabetes.

• Osteoporosis — Osteoporosis, which causes bones to become weak and brittle, may be associated with periodontal bone loss and tooth loss.

• Alzheimer’s disease —Tooth loss before age 35 may be a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease.

An article at naturalnews.com, “How Periodontal Disease Can Lead To Chronic Diseases” says, “Periodontal Disease is a Chronic Infection That Leads to Chronic Disease.” Harvard Medical School researchers studied longevity and found that one of the most important contributing factors was daily floss-ing; it removes bacteria from the teeth and gums. Flossing helps to prevent periodontal disease and gingivitis.

Another study found that men with periodontitis had a whop-ping 72 percent greater risk of developing coronary disease. Gingivitis was associated with a 42 percent increased risk for men. A 1996 study involving over 1,100 individuals found that all significantly related to their baseline periodontal status.

“Around each one of your teeth there is a natural space between the gum and the tooth. The depth of this space is important. If it’s too deep, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and

disease. Disease is diagnosed by redness, swelling, bleeding, odor and pocket depth. The presence or absence of gum disease is a reflection of an individual’s ability to withstand the nega-tive influences of improper tooth care, daily eating, drinking, and even by the content of one’s own saliva,” writes Dr. Ray G. Behm Jr., DDS.

The most common strain of bacteria in dental plaque can cause blood clots that induce heart attacks when they escape into the bloodstream, researchers have reported. As the plaque gets harder and thicker, it becomes what is known as dental calculus or tartar, a hard calcified layer that is virtually impossible to re-move with normal brushing. Only the dentist or dental hygienist can do it. It can even descend into pockets around the base of teeth inside the gums. This provides an ideal environment for the bacteria to breed and cause gum infection. For many people the symptoms are mild, with some bleeding but little pain or irritation, so it can be quite advanced before a patient detects it. That’s why it is so important to see your dentist regularly and NOT wait till it hurts! It can also be associated with bad breath.

Research reveals that diseased gums pump high levels of harmful bacterial components into the bloodstream. The skin of the oral cavity is known as “Oral Mucosa.” It is very rich with blood ves-sels and if outside bacteria and the toxins they produce get into the blood stream, they are off and running throughout the body.

• To protect your oral health, practice good oral hygiene every day.

• Brush your teeth at least twice a day, especially before bedtime.

• Replace your toothbrush every three to four months.

• Floss daily, preferably before bedtime.

• Eat a healthy diet (avoid simple sugars and carbohydrates) and limit between-meal snacks.

• Schedule regular dental checkups at least twice each year, but for some people who already have gum disease, four times each year is better.

Also, watch for signs and symptoms of oral disease (redness in your saliva when you spit out toothpaste) and contact your dentist as soon as a problem arises. Remember, taking care of your oral health is an investment in your overall health.

Back to school time sends alarm bells through my doctor brain. There are so many things to consider about children’s health. I will try to briefly hit a few high points.

Breakfast and ADHD

It is beyond me why teachers, school nurses, doctors and parents never ask the question of what a child eats. Sending a child to school with either no breakfast or a high sugar cereal, synthetic waffles with high fructose corn syrup fake maple syrup, high fructose corn syrup make believe juice with artificial colors and flavors, frequently causes the child to act like he or she

has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Not only does this make the child fat, but it also causes rebound hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar.

Fructose causes a fatty liver and is responsible for the massive increase in childhood obesity according to Robert Lustig, MD, Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of California School of Medicine. Low blood sugar causes fatigue, nervousness, irritability, headaches, craving for sweets, inability to concentrate, fears and apprehensions, confused intervals, poor memory, feelings of frustration and compulsive behavior. Sounds like ADHD to me.

Run from Ritalin

Everybody likes a quick fix for behavioral abnormalities. Teachers, school nurses, doctors and parents are easily seduced by the one pill fix. Ritalin and Adderal (mixed amphetamines, speed) may improve behavior in some kids, but never answers the underlying question of why the child got like this in the first place. It is never because of lack of drugs!

Changing the diet can be a lot of work, especially if the child has a tantrum when he or she doesn’t get the sugar fix. All of these medications deplete neurotransmitters and brain chemicals, and make healing more difficult.

Give your child some good protein for breakfast. Protein bars, protein drinks, nuts, fruit, yogurt, berries, oatmeal, apples with almond butter (avoid peanut butter it has a bad length of fatty acids), eggs or meat. Animal protein supports the blood sugar for six to ten hours. Avoid cow’s milk, it is for baby cows and can cause mucous, coughs and ear infections. Go with almond milk, rice milk, hemp milk, coconut milk, hazelnut milk or whole cream, it is the protein in milk that causes the inflammation in the intestines that can inflame the lungs, sinuses and skin especially in the allergic child.

prescription medications used to treat prostate dysfunction include decreased libido (sex drive), abnormal ejaculation, possible breast enlargement and/or breast tenderness.

A more natural approach to prostate health is to use a new extract (Prosta-Spect) that has been shown to be more effec-tive and carries with it only a very rare side-effect of stomach complaints.

Benefits of Men Taking Saw Palmetto

Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

Supplementing with saw palmetto berries has long been known to be beneficial for men, specifically their prostate glands.

Now there is a new ethanol extract of saw palmetto that is proving to have exceptionally high bioactivity compared to other saw palmetto products.

These liquid filled capsules are widely used in Europe to support prostate and lower urinary tract health. However, the results of clinical studies have been inconsistent, possibly due to varying dosage amounts and/or potencies of the extracts used in the studies. There are many types of saw palmetto extracts available, based on a variety of extraction processes.

An in vitro comparison of different brands of saw palmetto products showed a significant variation in activity. The activity of a product is based on its ability to inhibit the enzyme 5-alpha reductase; which catalyzes the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a potent androgen that is primarily responsible for prostate problems as well as male pattern hair loss. The prostate problems may include urinary hesitancy, weak urine stream, excessive nocturnal urination, loss of control of urine flow, residual urine in the bladder and recurrent urinary tract infections.

The most common undesirable side effects associated with

BRAINHEALTH

A mental health mythThere is a prevailing myth in our society that the term “mental health” is only applicable to persons who suffer severe emotional disorders. In actuality, every single person who appreciates “feeling good,” or wants to “feel good,” is either experiencing or seeking good mental health.

It is natural for people to seek physical and emotional comfort. But, do you know what that actually entails? A considerable factor is our neurotransmitters. Each of us has chemicals within our brain called neurotransmitters; when balanced, neurotransmitters play a significant role in feelings of pleasure and well-being. When we experience a deficiency or an excess of any neurotransmitter, it will lead to uncomfortable feelings. Often, we will then respond with an attempt to relieve the uncomfortable feelings—or in other words, we will attempt to regulate our mental health. Some of us do this by eating chocolate or by indulging in a substance or an activity that makes us “feel better” and helps to alleviate the discomfort or the restlessness or the cravings that we are experiencing.

We may seek different avenues to achieve that desired sense of satisfaction or well-being, but we are all motivated by the same chemical activity within our brain, managed by our neurotransmitters. Those uncomfortable feelings are

actually your brain’s message that it is time to correct an imbalance somewhere—and a good place to begin is with our neurotransmitters.

“our brain chemistry can become depleted or imbalanced as a

result of poor diet, stress, toxic environmental factors, etc.”

Neurotransmitters are chemicals that make it possible for your brain (an organ made of nerve tissue) to coordinate mental activity. Many of these neurotransmitters are composed of amino acids. For example, the neurotransmitter serotonin is made from the amino acid tryptophan. If tryptophan is not available, serotonin levels will fall, and brain functioning and mood will be affected. Individuals will typically feel a little down. The neurotransmitter tyrosine synthesizes to dopamine, increasing energy and alertness. Those are just two examples of how neurotransmitters affect our mental health. Some other symptoms of neurotransmitter deficiency or imbalance include drowsiness, irritability, agitation and inability to focus.

However, just as easily as our brain chemistry can become depleted or imbalanced as a result of poor diet, stress, toxic environmental factors, etc., we can give our mental health a boost through amino acid intake. A complete blend of amino acids (including all essential and non-essential amino acids) can aid in restoring maximum brain function and optimal mood with no known negative side effects. Amino acids are extraordinary nutrients that can often serve as a stand-alone remedy for many common mental health symptoms. Having a proper balance of amino acids within the mind/body is an essential component of each person’s individual mental health; it lays the foundation for a healthier, well-balanced life.

“Feeling good” is within reach when you reach for amino acids!

Cancer Therapy is Often Shortsighted

In a study reported in the British Journal of Cancer, the authors asked fifty-one oncologists if they would take chemotherapy for various metastatic cancers. Amazingly, for most of the cancers in question, less than 50 percent said they would do it. Why? Half of these doctors thought that chemotherapy as it is currently given is too toxic. Also, the minimal benefit it offers did not outweigh the side effects. But chemo drugs certainly kill cancers. So what’s the problem?

When most people think of cancer treatment, they think of only one thing: killing the cancer. The problem is that this approach is often shortsighted. Just killing the cancer is usually not enough. What is needed is a complete treatment for the entire person, not a simple let’s-kill-the-cancer-and-go-home approach.

And a complete approach includes two other areas of therapy. One, the cause of the cancer must be eliminated. That makes sense. Two, the patient’s strength, vitality and immune function must be optimized. Your body has to be strong to fight cancer. For optimum success, all three of these areas of therapy should be included. Let’s break this down.

Killing Cancer Cells

Chemotherapy does indeed kill cancer. The problem is that the doses are too high. This leads to immune suppression and a weakened patient. Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT) is different. IPT exploits the fact that cancer cells, unlike healthy cells, rely completely on glucose (sugar/carbohydrates) for their energy supply. This is a weakness of cancer cells. IPT uses chemo. But, it uses chemo in a way that exploits this weakness to produce a greater killing effect from the drugs. It also uses much lower doses, so the toxicity is a fraction of conventional chemotherapy.

Eliminating the Cause

It is obvious to anyone that if you want to get rid of a disease, you have to eliminate the causes. Cancer rarely has one cause. It is usually caused by a combination of different factors. These include stress, toxicity, hormonal imbalances, infections, decreased oxygen utilization and dietary deficiencies.

It is amazing how often patients are given chemotherapy to kill the cancer, while at the same time the conditions that caused the cancer in the first place are still at work. No wonder the cancer comes back so often.

The single most powerful way to treat the factors that cause cancer is with ozone therapy. Ozone therapy uses the remarkable properties of oxygen to work. It is a unique form of therapy that heals and detoxifies at the same time. Doctors can use it to treat virtually every chronic disease there is including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Lyme disease, chronic hepatitis, herpes, chronic fatigue states, chemical sensitivity, macular degeneration, chronic bladder conditions, colitis, auto-immune diseases and Crohn’s disease.

Ozone therapy can be applied systemically to the blood. It can also be used topically through the skin, and internally using ozonated colonic therapy.

Increasing Strength, Vitality, and Immune Function

Many patients, especially those in progressive states of cancer, are fatigued and weak. They are not only weak because of the cancer, but they are also weak because they might be older, nutritionally out of balance, immune suppressed and toxic. One of the major goals of cancer therapy has to be to improve strength, vitality and immune function. That way, they will be in the best possible position to control the disease.

The problem with conventional chemotherapy is that frequently just the opposite happens. Patients often feel and function worse. Think about it—how much sense does it make to take a body that is already under assault from cancer, and then expose it to even more toxicity without doing one thing to strengthen it?

So in addition to killing cancer cells and eliminating causes, the third part of a comprehensive attack on cancer involves increasing overall strength, vitality and immune function. This is critical.

To accomplish this, patients need to be on a very specific diet and nutritional supplement program. Ozone therapy, nutritional IV’s, vitamin C IV’s, immune stimulation therapy, hormone therapy, detoxification and Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequency Therapy (PEMF) are all invaluable.

Tests are available that can be used to determine which natural remedies will be the most effective immune stimulants for each person.

So, when you think about treating cancer, don’t fall into a shortsighted approach that focuses only on killing cancer. Two other issues always need to be addressed in order to get the best results: eliminating the factors that led to the cancer in the first place, and improving and maintaining strength, vitality and immune function. Just like a stool needs at least three legs to work, it is important that all three of these approaches be a part of the therapy.

themselves of years of kids’ clothes. My mom has developed a knack over the years in finding amazing clothes and housewares at garage sales; she can actually drive past one and with a flashing glance, determine if something good awaits. Sometimes people are kind enough in the ad to list what will be available to save you the travel. Team up with your friends who have children and make a “friend date” out of it.

Clothing Swaps:

Swaps are bartering at its finest. They are great for groups of parents with kids of various ages. Round up your kids’ (and your own) wearable garments that no longer get any use. Meet up at an agreed location, most likely someone’s home, and set out your offerings out for everyone to see. Let each person present their items and allow attendees to claim or request. You will likely leave with decent finds since everyone’s goal is to get rid of their stock. Have each person bring a snack or drink to share.

Nifty Thrift Stores:

The most obvious choice for recycled clothing is a thrift store. At more selective thrift stores, it’s likely that the clothes have been screened and picked through by employees, for cleanliness. You may even sell your used items in good condition for cash or a store credit. Spending your dollars at thrift stores also supports your local economy by keeping those jobs in place and contributing to non-profits operating them, such as the SPCA or Salvation Army.

Choosing recycled clothing means you may have to spend a bit more time finding items that aren’t overly tattered and on occasion, guessing that they’ll fit. Overall, you’re still saving on extraneous spending and using less. You could put that extra money into your family vacation fund for next summer.

The drill is familiar. You trek to the department store in August with the kids, allotting a specific budget for the back to school wardrobe. Six months pass and the youngest has already outgrown his new pants, the others render the formerly crisp t-shirts into rags. You’re back at the store once the seasons change because last year’s winter coats are too small. Hand-me-downs suffice to an extent, but let’s face it: kids grow. As do their clothes, which aren’t cheap.

Perhaps you already possess a thrifty eye and know where to shop for best value. Budget aside, clothing consumption is still one of the most environmentally taxing—from copious amounts of pesticides in cotton growing, to toxic chemicals like formaldehyde and dyes in fabric processing, not to mention excessive water use, and finally, the waste produced by clothing disposal. The average American throws 68 lbs of clothes into landfills each year, which don’t quickly break down and are loaded with the toxins.

The sensible solution to satisfying your family’s back to school needs and being mindful of the impacts of your purchasing choices is using recycled clothing. Why buy new when your kids are sprouting like chia seeds and rolling around in the mud and grass at recess? Since the clothes have already been used, try jazzing them up with simple embroidery details, or your own hemming. Your youngins will develop a sense of individuality and respect for recycling, which they will hopefully carry into adulthood.

Check out these eco-conscious and frugal ways to obtain recycled clothes:

Garage Sales:

Check your local newspaper or Craigslist for some garage sales in the area. Often, families such as yours will be ridding

More than five thousand years ago, ancient people discovered that by applying pressure with their fingers and hands to specific points on the body, they could relieve pain. Today, we call this acupressure, or if needles are used on the same points, it’s called acupuncture. Most believe these techniques were developed in China. However, additional research has shown that the knowledge may have been discovered in India and then spread to the East and West. If that’s true, why didn’t that information come across the Atlantic with the first European settlers to arrive in America? How do we know Europe ever HAD that knowledge?

Almost 20 years ago, two hikers in the Alps discovered a man’s

body that had been encased in ice for 5,300 years and had become visible only because the glaciers were melting. He had a copper ax, a bow and a quiver of arrows. He was dressed in furs with a woven grass cloak and leather coverings for his feet. Researchers had never found a body this ancient still retaining hair and skin. The body was placed in an fMRI machine, where they discovered that this iceman had suffered from arthritis. There were unusual tattoos on the body, which they soon realized corresponded accurately to acupressure/acupuncture points for pain. This was an astonishing discovery, as meridian therapy was thought to be a much more recent therapeutic development, and was certainly never thought to have been known in Europe. That’s why Americans have learned about

other quick and easy acupressure release techniques which take emotional healing to a far more profound level.

This amazing energy system is built-in. You were born with it. Once you learn where the points are on your body, you can use this brilliant built-in system just like Otzi did over 5000 years ago. And I hope we might even know a bit more now than Otzi did, since the Chinese have been researching this for so long. We are walking miracles, with over 50 trillion cells that communicate with each other instantly. Some of those interactions are on autopilot; others are determined by our thoughts, our attitudes and our emotions. Our physical well-being is intricately connected to how we feel about ourselves and our relationships. It behooves us to do everything we can to raise the level of joy and satisfaction in our lives by using all of our built-in systems.

acupressure/acupuncture only recently. This healing system had to come to us from Asia.

Much research has been done on the emotional and physical healing properties of this system. Millions of people all over the world use it every day to soothe and heal themselves, to release stress and anxiety, to remove emotional trauma and to relieve pain. We were born with this system intact, ready to be used.

There are twelve bilateral meridians in our bodies; energy pathways which connect over 400 acupressure points to one another and to our internal organs. Just like blood vessels nourish the body physically, meridians circulate healing energy to all systems of the body.

Simply by holding certain points with steady pressure, or tapping and rubbing those points, endorphins (pain-relief agents) are released from the pituitary gland into the bloodstream. Tension seems to accumulate at acupressure points. As a point is held, massaged or tapped, the muscular tension yields to finger pressure, enabling the fibers of the muscle to elongate and relax, blood to flow freely and toxins to be released and eliminated. When blood and bioelectrical energy circulate properly, you have a greater sense of harmony, health and well-being. As a result, your symptoms are alleviated and your circulation is sufficiently increased, restoring your natural well-being.

It has been discovered that by massaging powerful emotional release acupoints while saying certain words and holding a strong intention, emotional trauma can be released permanently. Scenes and memories that had been plaguing you for years simply disappear, along with the emotions that had been created by those experiences. Since there is no separation between mind and body, every trauma settles in the cells somewhere. It’s easy to see how the health and well-being of your body could greatly benefit by being permanently relieved of the accumulated emotional trauma stored within.

Acupressure has been proven successful for emotional issues such as abandonment, addiction, anger, anxiety and panic attacks, codependency, depression, fear and phobias, worry and self-doubt, trauma and PTSD, stress, every kind of abuse, jealousy and resentment, incest, guilt and shame as well as grief. It has also proved successful for physical imbalances such as chronic fatigue, insomnia, fibromyalgia and much more.

If you have ever used EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) you’ve used your own meridian system to relieve stress and anxiety. Most people have learned the kindergarten version of EFT, and may not be using it to its full power. There are also

On my first day of school, I quickly became aware that this day was a bigger event than I had anticipated—everybody was making a fuss about everything. My grandparents stopped by to “see what I was wearing.” That made no sense to me; even though I was wearing my favorite red polo shirt (that I had just gotten for my 5th birthday), I didn’t understand why I didn’t have on my play clothes. After all, I was going to that fun building with the “inside” playground.

“Let’s take pictures! We’ll want to remember this day!” I heard my grandmother say. Why, I wondered. As I sat on Grandpa’s knee for his photo he whispered to me, “This is day one of what you’re going to be doing for the

next twenty years my boy—get ready!”

“What is he talking about?” My sixteen year old brother then worked his way into the photo with the sage advice, “You’d

SPIRITUALHEALTH

“Going Within” Written By Rev. Jack R. Elliott, Author and Spiritual Life Coach

There was a time in my life with I dreaded “firsts days,” especially first days of school. It all harkens back to my first day of kindergarten. I was so excited to go—or so I thought.

Mom and I would drive by a lovely brick building downtown, which also held our library and say, “There’s where you’ll be going to kindergarten.” It looked nice, but I really didn’t know what kindergarten meant, but as with other “big words,” I figured I would find out soon enough. I could hear lots kids playing and if it was going to be about playing, then that was okay with me.

“I hear kids, where’s the playground,” I asked. “Oh, I think they’re playing inside, honey,” responded my mom. Cool, I though, an inside playground, so you can play even when it’s raining outside. That was my logic anyway.

First Day

on exactly the same shirt as I did. “Look, we’re twins” he said. That made me smile. “Is red your favorite color too?” I asked. “Yes!” he replied. “Will you be my friend,” he asked. “Yes,” I said. As we took our seats next to each other, I felt the fear of the unknown dissipate from me. I didn’t know what was next—but somehow, it didn’t matter. I had someone to walk with me, to be my friend, as I journeyed down a new path.

From that point forward, whenever I navigate through a “first day” (college registration, job interview, first date, first day on a new job, etc.), I’m often aware of the aroma of that freshly mowed grass that I smelled on my first day. I can feel the anxiety of that first walk up that long sidewalk. When this happens, I remember that Spirit (God) is always with me. Spirit will send me someone to share the journey with; and that someone will most likely become a teacher, mentor or a new beloved friend. I know that without fear, there will be someone right there ready to tap on my shoulder and say, “It’s going to be okay.”

better pay attention or the teacher will smack you with the ruler!”

“What teacher? Hit me? Where are you guys taking me? I just want to go to that big building with the inside playground!”

When my mom took me into her arms for her photo opportunity, she offered the words, “Now I know you’re going to be a good boy today. I don’t want you to be afraid. I know we won’t be there, but you’re going to be okay.”

I thought, wait a minute! You guys are going to drop me off at some big strange building downtown, where some lady is going to hit me with a ruler, and I’m going to be there for the

next twenty years with a bunch of people I don’t know? I said, “I’m not going!”My mother said, “Oh yes you are young man!” And off we went!

I was full of fear and anxiety. The walk up the sidewalk to the main door was horrendous. I felt that I was being led away to prison. The janitor was cutting the grass and the aroma of freshly cut grass filled my senses. The freshly cut lawn and the beautiful August day beckoned me to want to play “outside,” I’m not ready for an inside playground, “we can do this another day,” I pleaded. But, all I heard was, “No you’re going—now straighten up!”

Now, all I could do was fall to the floor weeping. It was my trump card. It was all I had left. Even that didn’t work. I was pulled to my feet and carried inside. Soon, I was in a room surrounded by strangers my age and this tall lady with a ruler in her hand. Speaking sternly to my mom she bellowed, “Just leave him.” I’d never heard anyone speak to my mom with such a tone. My mom kissed me on the forehead and quickly turned and left. I could see she was crying too.

I froze. I was panic stricken. I was too afraid to even cry or move. Then this little boy tapped me on the shoulder and said, “It’s going to be okay.” I looked at him and noticed that he had

Energy bars are supposedly low calorie, high nutrient packed snacks; a great alternative to a candy bar. They satisfy the craving for something sweet, while providing a generous serving of protein; great for an athlete or busy person on the go. Lately, energy bars formulated specifically for kids are hitting the markets. Their labels are littered with promises of extra vitamins, fiber, and even celebrated ALA omega 3 fatty acids. Often these products are sweetened, so they taste good to kids, while soothing the parent’s conscience that they are a healthier alternative to a corn-syrup based candy bar.

Since exorbitant health claims on labels tend to mask less than savory truths revealed by reading the ingredient list, it seems prudent to examine a few of these products more closely. Let’s take a look:

Kashi Soft Baked Squares:

Ingredients: Organic whole wheat flour, sweet potatoes, expeller pressed canola oil, organic agave syrup, evaporated cane juice medium invert syrup, tapioca syrup, black bean flour, kashi seven grain flour (whole: oats, hard red wheat, rye, brown rice, triticale, barley, buckwheat) acacia gum, evaporated cane juice crystals, vegetable glycerin, chocolate liquor, semisweet chocolate (organic evaporated cane juice, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, ground vanilla beans), cocoa, potassium bicarbonate, sea salt, natural flavor, soy lecithin, peanut flour, almond flour, nonfat milk. Contains

wheat, soy, peanut, almond and milk ingredients. May contain other tree nuts.

Pros: Largely organic ingredients, no corn syrup. Many of the ingredients listed come from whole food sources such as the sweet potatoes, black beans and whole grains.

Cons: This is not a gluten free food, nor is it suitable for kids with peanut allergies. Furthermore, on this product’s website, the following description can be found, “And with natural sweetness from agave, 4g of fiber and 300mg of ALA omega-3, they’re a nutritious snack your kids will ask for by name!” However, when inspecting the ingredient list, not a single ingredient can be attributed with containing the ALA omega 3’s that Kashi claims are in this product. The only oil in this product is from canola, which is an omega 6, and nothing on the nutrition facts table seems able to substantiate this omega 3 claim either. This product is also loaded with cane sugar.

Cliff ZBar:

Ingredients: Organic Oat Blend (Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Oat Flour, Organic Oat Fiber), Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Cane Syrup, Organic Chocolate Chips (Organic Dried Cane Syrup, Organic Unsweetened Chocolate, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Soy Lecithin, Organic Vanilla Extract), Organic Fig Paste, Organic Cocoa, Organic Soy Butter (Organic Roasted Soybeans, Organic Soybean Oil, Salt), Organic Chocolate (Organic Dried Cane Syrup, Organic Unsweetened Chocolate,

Pros: Organic ingredients and many whole food ingredients including oats, figs and flaxseed. Does not contain peanuts.

Cons: May not be suitable for gluten free individuals, or those who are allergic to soy. Contains cane sugar. Also contains chocolate, which contains small amounts of caffeine, which can rapidly lower the blood sugar and be overly stimulating to the nervous system. Children are the most susceptible to the negative effects of caffeine, which includes stomach irritation, insomnia, restlessness, behavioral problems and bone loss.

Matisse and Jack’s Power Mix:

Ingredients: Organic Whole Grain Rolled Oats, Whole Grain Oat Flour, Flax Seeds, Ground Soy Nuts, Semi-sweet Chocolate Chips (Sugar, Unsweetened Chocolate, Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin, Vanilla), Evaporated Cane Juice, Unbleached Wheat Flour, Light Brown Sugar, M&J’s TextureBlend (Rice Syrup Solids, Oat Bran), Vital Wheat Gluten, Fructose, Non-GMO Soy Protein Isolate, Natural Flavors, Sea Salt, Calcium (Tricalcium Phosphate), Cinnamon, Baking Soda.

Pros: Organic and non-gmo ingredients. Peanut free. Some whole food ingredients such as oats and flax.

Cons: Not suitable for kids who are allergic to soy or need gluten free food. Contains several different sources of sugar and chocolate.

In conclusion, all of these products can be considered OK as a once in a while sweet treat. To treat them as a healthy, nutritious alternative to a whole food is another story. Excessive consumption of chocolate, sugar and omega-6 containing oils has been shown to do more harm than good in the body. The next time you’re craving a sweet, healthy treat, reach for a piece of fruit. Choose food over food products for sustained energy and good health!

Little people have little adrenal glands (on top of the kidneys), which control blood sugar.

Any stress depletes these glands and makes blood sugar regulation more difficult, including sleep abnormalities.

To help the adrenal glands, supplement with vitamin C, B complex, vitamin A, and increase good sea salt (never use table salt; it contains aluminum as a drying agent and has no trace minerals). Avoid fluoride containing toothpaste, which blocks the thyroid and adrenals and causes dental fluorosis, which are white and brown spots on the teeth in over 40 percent of our children.

There are many natural vitamins, herbs, amino acids and homeopathics, which can be employed for kids with ADHD, autism and other behavioral issues such as tryptophan/ 5-HTP (makes serotonin the calming, happy neurotransmitter) tyrosine the amino acid which makes dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine (the awake alert neurotranmitters), theanine from tea (calming and happy), phosphatidylserine amino acid (gives calming and steady blood sugar) GABA, gamma amino butyric acid (calming neurotransmitter), magnesium (calming and laxative), taurine ( calming fatty acid), glycine (calming amino acid), adaptogen herbs such as Cordyceps, Rhodiola, Ashwaganda, Maca and Siberian ginseng, which keep the brain from hyper reacting to excitatory stimulation. Homeopathic remedies are great for deeper problems that can be hereditary in nature, such as severe anger, head banging, violent behavior, timidity and weak tissues.

If You Immunize

If you immunize be sure you know what immunization reactions look like. Go to www.mercola.com and scroll down to the bottom of his health letters and read up on vaccinations/immunizations. Also check out the National Vaccine Information Center sites (NVIC). The NVIC President, Barbara Loe Fischer, gives the tragic story of her son, now in his 30’s, who had febrile reactions to the first two DPT immunizations he was given; the third time he was injected he suffered seizures, hospitalization and subsequent autism. Nevada law grants exemption from immunization for religious belief. California grants exemption for philosophical and religious beliefs.

pickles, sweet potatoes, winter squashes, carrots, beets, pumpkins and peaches. It combines beautifully with onions and garlic, making a wonderful base for all kinds of soups and sauces. It is a flavor often associated with the holiday season, as gingerbread cakes and cookies would not exist without this spice. It enhances many a sweet bread, muffin, pudding and cake.

Surprisingly, despite being a zone nine tropical plant, ginger is easy to grow in your own home. Plant a root obtained either from a grocery store or nursery, in a large pot filled with equal parts sand, loam, peat moss and compost. Ginger thrives in moist, well drained soil. Give it plenty of warmth, water and humidity. Mist the leaves with a spray bottle, as it helps to compensate for the lack of humidity in a desert or high-desert climate. In the hot summer months, the pot can be moved to a semi-shaded location outdoors. The root may be ready to harvest at eight to twelve months after planting. Cut off the leaf stalks and as much of the root as you would like to use. Leave a bit of root to replant, for a new crop. Keep the fresh root refrigerated, wrapped first in a paper towel, then after a week or so, tightly wrapped in plastic. When it is kept this way, it will stay fresh for several months.

HERBS&SPICES

Ginger RootZingiber Officinale, or Ginger root, has been a beloved spice and versatile ingredient for centuries. It can be found in traditional dishes from China, Japan, Southeast Asia, East India, the Caribbean and North Africa. Not to mention its adoption by Europeans when it was acquired by spice traders. Gingerbread has been baked for over four hundred years; some of the earliest recipes date back to the Greeks. Spanish conquistadors are responsible for bringing the root to Jamaica, and cultivating it there, resulting in the creation of fabulous beverages ginger beer and ginger ale.

Ginger is an aromatic rhizome, or root, native to tropical climates. It produces large fronds of thin spiked leaves and delicate white flowers. Its origin is uncertain, but it is believed to be native to India and Southern China.

Though ginger is somewhat spicy to the palate, it is remarkably soothing to the stomach. It has been used to ease indigestion, flatulence and even motion sickness. It is also prized as a helpful spice for soothing the nausea associated with morning sickness. It is generally considered to be a safe and effective herb; however it does act as a mild stimulant and increases circulation. For this reason, pregnant women should be careful to limit the amount of ginger root they ingest to no more than one or two grams daily. Ginger in large amounts has been associated with miscarriage, because of its stimulant properties. Women who have a history of miscarriage should avoid it all together in their first trimester.

Other medicinal applications of ginger include steam inhalation to treat colds and infection of the lungs. It can reduce mild fevers as well. One drop of the essential oil of the root, when added to massage oil is helpful for easing muscle soreness, rheumatism, lumbago and fatigue.

Ginger has a multitude of applications in the kitchen. It adds wonderful flavor to beverages, both hot and cold. It gives a nice zest to fruit salad. It can be found in curry powders and pastes. It is used to season meats, poultry, fish, preserves,

My daughter Lindsey thinks I’m boring, so as a dramatic shake-up, we changed the route of our evening walk the other night. We went up one of those side-streets east of Grass Valley Road—I’m not sure which one—I’m not only boring, I’m a bad navigator. Close enough to the mountain that the houses were thinning out, we saw a yucca tree. It was some ten or twelve feet tall.

“I love seeing plants like this growing wild in their native habitat,” I gushed.

GARDENING

“A Rough Patch”Written By Teresa Howell

“Mom,” Lindsey said. “Have you ever seen any other yucca tree around here? They might grow in Southern Nevada, but not in this country. Even if they did, this one didn’t grow wild—don’t you see the tracks where somebody backed a pick-up to plant it? Besides, Mother Nature doesn’t use a board on the side opposite the prevailing wind to keep a tree from blowing over.”

Oh, how much sharper than a serpent’s tooth is an intelligent child.

We went closer to investigate.

Mystery in The Desert

Page 34: August 2012 Healthy Beginnings Magazine

I picked up some seed envelopes lying next to the yucca. Hoping to redeem myself, I said, “Well, at least the flowers they planted are native. This package is lupines, and the other is a wildflower mix. Lupines and wildflowers DO grow wild around here.”

Lindsey gently removed the package from my hand and sighed. “Some kinds of lupines are native here. But these are Russell’s lupines, and not only are they not native, they are thirsty plants. If some kindly rain lets them sprout, they won’t live long.”

I could see I was losing ground. I had hoped she’d admit the wildflowers were native, but nothing doing.

“See the brand name on this package of wildflowers?” she said. “They market those nationally. These seeds are probably several generations from being truly wild, and they almost certainly didn’t grow wild in this part of Nevada. They’re probably from back east somewhere.”

I hate when Lindsey rolls her eyes at me. I hate even worse when I actually deserve it.

Lindsey did make me wonder just exactly what made a plant qualify as native. So I did some checking. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service specifies that a native plant is “a plant that is a part of the balance of nature that has developed over hundreds or thousands of years in a particular region or ecosystem,” and specifies that “The word native should always be used with a geographic qualifier,” giving “New England” as an example.

“A Rough Patch”Written By Teresa Howell

Years ago, I found a definition of “native plants” that almost amounted to a prescription for using them. The source advised that the plant should be from no more than ten or twenty miles away. Mind, that did not mean that if blue flax occurred in nature somewhere within that distance, you were then authorized to go out and buy a packet of blue flax seed at the local Wal-mart. Potential landscapers were advised to collect seeds from their locale (responsibly, of course), and germinate and grow them themselves.

The thinking is that by selecting only those plants, you help preserve the flora of a particular place, which is quite often in need of preservation. Those plants will thrive in that location, theoretically at least, without modifications to soil or supplemental water once the plants are established.

Although I admire the idea of scrounging the neighborhood for plants, I’ve had a hard time putting it into practice. For one thing, many desert plants are slow growing, especially if they aren’t watered, and I want to complete my landscape before I die. I’m impatient like that.

For another, the twenty-mile radius doesn’t make sense in a vertical state like Nevada. The mountains and canyons behind my house represent radically different growing conditions than I have in my yard.

When I can, I’ll use plants native to the Great Basin. When I can’t, I’ll be happy with any plants that behave well in our climate. And if I have any questions, I’ll ask Lindsey. She knows.

When Teresa Howell isn’t annoying her daughter, she teaches English at Great Basin College.

BOOKREVIEW

As a physician, Jeffrey Millman saw the impact that both physical and emotional pain had on the lives of his patients. As he continued in his practice he felt a growing need to seek an explanation for that human suffering. He realized that only by connecting with his intuitive mind, by using his sixth sense, could he begin to understand the underlying reasons for emotional and physical pain. This book is the culmination of decades of exploration into the physical and metaphysical realms of the human condition.

We all experience pain, illness or emotional distress sometime during our lives. Each of us has a soul, or Higher self that has come into human form to have physical experiences. Dr. Millman believes that these experiences are designed to provide us with opportunities to learn the lessons we need for our spiritual growth.

Rather than being afraid or overwhelmed by life’s challenges, we can learn how to connect with our Higher self by using our intuitive mind. By making that leap of faith we bypass our rational mind and receive inner guidance, which leads to improved health, greater happiness and peace of mind.

Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings By

June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt

Using case histories accumulated over forty years of practicing family medicine, Dr. Millman discusses many different illness and emotional issues and explains the specific lessons that each one presents. He uses his holistic and spiritual approach to healing to make sense of the death of our physical body and the transition of our spirit to the other side.

He was trained to objectively assess information gathered by his five senses and computed through his logical brain to arrive at a rational explanation. He felt ill equipped to tackle the philosophical issues of pain and death. His scientific mind couldn’t provide the answers he was searching for. Then, he began to notice something he hadn’t been trained to pay attention to: his intuitive flashes about a specific diagnosis or treatment. Years of experience has since taught him to notice his hunches and to trust those gut feelings. He learned that opening himself to his intuitive sixth sense facilitated grater clarity and insight. After some time the merging of the scientific with the intuitive resulted in his personal transition from physician to healer.

But there was still the problem of making sense of all the pain and suffering he saw every day. Then, in meditation, one day he asked, “Dear God, do you exist?” The answer he received

was clear: he would have to spend more time being still. So he made a commitment to extend his time with Higher self and Higher Power to an hour every morning and at least ten minutes before lunch. He was on a quest to spend more time actively connecting to Invisible Energy.

But because of his training, doubt was always present. He saw that doubt was relentless and makes belief in Invisible Energy an almost daily challenge, and there was still the problem of why all the pain and suffering? As doubt became less prevalent, it was replaced by an inner knowing. He found that as he connected more often with Higher self, he became healthier, happier and calmer. He became less angry, worried and sad. Suffering diminished.

He became convinced that our soul has an existence of its own. It merges with the physical, infusing the body with a life force, and its existence is to grow and develop. We are individuated souls climbing an invisible spiral staircase to a higher place. We each have our own staircase, reaching upward toward a common goal—Source.

There are as many paths to Truth as there are individuated souls. Your path is unique to you alone. But learning to plug into the power of Invisible Energy expedites personal and spiritual growth. Connecting with our Higher self empowers us to be more successful by speeding up the process. Dr. Millman has discovered four techniques that he believes are very helpful to achieve this goal: Interactive dialogue, kinesiology, dreams and insightful flashes. In this book he explains these techniques and describes in detail how to use them. I found them very clever, original and useful.

During his search for meaning, Dr. Millman came to realize that our thoughts and beliefs, our mental and emotional state, has everything to do with our state of health. He gives numerous examples of patients who survived catastrophic illnesses because of their positive attitude, as well as examples of patients who died from the same or lesser illnesses because of their negative or defeatist attitude. What “happens” to us isn’t as critical as how we react to it. He also gives many examples of how important positive self-talk is to maintaining health and wellness.

The five chapter headings are Becoming, Pain, Illness, Connecting, Lessons and Transition. At the end of the book, the author also gives a list of recommended reading material. Dr. Millman is in private practice in Sparks and is a clinical professor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOKVITAL, LIFE-GIVING IDEAS IN A TIME OF PROFOUND CHANGE

Written By Eric Francis

ASTROLOGY

Horoscope for Health | August - 2012

TThe Sun is in Leo through Aug. 22, when it ingresses Virgo. Mercury is retrograde in Leo through Aug. 8 (that began July 14), after which we get the first extended phase in 2012, with no inner planet retrogrades. From midsummer through late autumn, direct motion planets means we finally get a chance to look forward rather than look back. That remains true until Mercury stations retrograde right

in the midst of Election Day in the United States, promising one of the most complex election scenarios we’ve ever seen, and a possible repeat of the electoral shenanigans of 2000. The

Aquarius Full Moon is Aug. 1, and the Leo New Moon is Aug. 18. There’s also a conjunction to watch for between Mars and Saturn, on Aug. 15.

Aries (March 20-April 19)Act now to avert an unnecessary standoff

in a relationship. Notice that there is some pressure building. There needs to be a vent for

that energy, and it has to be handled consciously so that it doesn’t turn toxic. Notably, responsibility for this situation may seem to rest with a partner; you have been collecting evidence of that. Yet you’re in the scenario as a kind of provocateur. Therefore, I suggest you listen rather than provoke, and take steps to ease the intensity rather than ramp it up. I suggest you be diplomatic and respectful. If you hear yourself saying, “But this would compromise my independence,” take a long pause and ask whether you want the relationship at all. If you don’t, sabotage is not the answer. A negotiated agreement is best—though that’s true in any event.

Taurus (April 19-May 20)You seem to be preoccupied with the theme of authority or power. Currently you’re less directly subject to power, and are dancing with its various influences. I suggest you bear in mind the ways that your internal emotional state may be distorting your perceptions. It’s always true that our mind and our senses filter what we perceive; that’s what they’re for. Now the key is to use your intelligence to observe and correct those distortions. One question that may be percolating is: did you feel safe in your father’s home? This question comes with another—what was your reference point for safety? How exactly do you define the concept of “secure”? If you’re asking this question well, it’s going to lead to more questions before you start to arrive at coherent information—though it will, if you’re patient.

Gemini (May 20-June 21)Once again you’re getting a sense of the value of words. Yet I think you may need to increase your perception of that value, equating it with your entire reputation. Promises, spoken commitments, inquiries and statements of fidelity—in many ways your life hangs in the balance on these things. You are

indeed judged by your ability to tell the whole truth, and to both speak and write with a measure of objectivity. This all might mean less were you not a Gemini, whose main form of focusing power and transacting life force comes through what you speak and write. That we live in a society where it’s considered normal to lie, not just in advertising and political speech, but also casually in conversations with nearly anyone, emphasizes the point. Embody the truth that you’re only as good as your word.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)Take this month and sort out your investments, your cash flow and your overall financial picture. Really get a handle on what you have in assets (including non-cash assets) and what you have to deal with in terms of debt and other liabilities. Look at the whole picture on one page or spreadsheet and see if it tells you anything new. You may not want to make actual changes till later in the month—at least not till after the New Moon of Aug. 17—though if you do a thorough assessment and set some goals that require you to stretch, you’ll be able to improve your financial situation considerably. If there is one big message here, it’s about aligning your values, your activities and your ideas about money. Your values are the root concept.

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23)If someone, something or an idea is important to you, treat it that way. Send the message of respect first to yourself and then to the world around you. This is a word we don’t hear enough, and a feeling that is worth cultivating on every level. Respect means “to see again,” which means that it’s a form of recognition: you don’t respect someone at first blush; it’s something that comes over time. The central theme of this month is a re-evaluation process, which is learning to see yourself for who you are. Remember that this is a process of seeing again; whatever you discover is a rediscovery, and what you witness a kind of re-visioning. What you’re doing is something that has become such a rare thing in our society: learning not to forget.

point of view, the reflection you’re looking at will change—though like when you’re looking in a mirror, it may be in the opposite direction.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20)Mind your ethics. That is to say, your awareness of “right and wrong” needs to be an ongoing study that you reconsider from situation to situation. There is no strict code except the need to question yourself, and to be alert to the particulars. The more involved in leadership you are, the more important this will be; there are various temptations on the radar, such as to take advantage of power to cheat justice in some way. In particular where a joint financial arrangement is concerned, you may feel that it’s possible to get away with anything. It’s not. What is possible is for you to co-create a situation that works for everyone, which in any modern concept of ethics would be the focus. This requires flexibility and, at the moment, you have it.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19)You may feel like you’re the cause of why an intimate relationship is in the spot that it’s in. Yet people get together based on some form of complimentary karma. The encounter has the qualities that it has for “reasons” that everyone brings. Right now there may be an emphasis on the ways that you are wounded, or the ways that being betrayed (or betraying others) in the past is influencing the situation now. This is true as far as it goes: everyone you’re in a relationship with has that part of themselves that engages with that part of you. You’re approaching the moment where it’s possible to heal the past and start new—though if you’re currently in a relationship this has to be true for everyone, if the encounter is to be beneficial for anyone.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)I suggest you be proactive on a matter involving a contractual situation, taxes or some kind of estate-related issue. In this scenario, preparation is everything, and if you use some foresight and maintain strict ethics, you have every advantage and can profit considerably. First, you can prevent contention or some kind of conflict, by seeing the early signs that you need to take action. Just make sure that it’s informed, cooperative action—cooperation is the key, as is your timing. Make sure that everyone involved knows that they share common interests, though it’s more crucial for you to keep that in mind yourself. As for ethics: mainly this means that everyone acts on free will and respects that of others. Coercion is out of the question.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22)You have some amazing career prospects right now, though rather than emphasize your work I suggest you emphasize healing. You’re close to breaking through a barrier that was put in place by your parents or even your much larger family. Again and again you’ve tried to crack this one, with special emphasis the past 18 months. Now, the momentum of your growth, and your commitment to balance, can carry you over barriers that seemed insurmountable in the past. In the end, you know this comes down to loving yourself, and forgiving yourself, and you may even be using these words as you figure out the special thing about this moment in your life. I suggest you look at the one thing you’ve been the most afraid to look at, for the longest, as the source of the deepest healing.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23)This is not the month to push your luck, your relationships or the patience of anyone in a position of authority in your life. It is most definitely the month to use your Libra talent for balance, which I suggest you do in the form of ultra-high consciousness of the balance factors in your relationships. Asking, giving and receiving need to be in proportion. You have a polite way of being demanding, and it’s time you notice that for what it is. One self-study project can be learning how to extend yourself above what you think is expected of you. You’re likely to go through a series of inner responses to the feeling of doing that, which will land you in the place of: the more you give, the more you’ll realize you have.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22)If I had to describe your phobia-du-jour, these days it seems to be that we don’t live in a fair world. Well, that’s true, though the thing to consider is how you can access justice. That word means fairness, and it has as its root the same concept as adjustment. Therefore, if you’re feeling fear, think in terms of what you can adjust. This will require you to see two or more sides of any situation that you’re in, and be able to reason each one through; said another way, it’s good to be able to argue both sides of the case. Yet then there’s the issue of these emotional spikes you may be having, which can seize you at odd moments. When you get to one of those places, stop and reflect. You can go a long way by being willing to change, and to accept change.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22)You might want to admit that you’re out of your element. Not totally out—but enough that you don’t have your usual focusing power. You have something else; which is the strength of a relationship that may finally represent a departure from so much of what has happened in the past. There is a delicate balance in this situation. You wield a power that you don’t fully understand and may not even be in possession of. Meanwhile, you have those moments when it seems to you that everyone else has all the power. That one perception is the defining theme of your past relationships. It’s not true, though it will seem to be true until you fully possess the influence that is yours. You have a clue what I mean, and I suggest you begin with a gentle, experimental approach.point trying to change others, few people actually remember this. However, the results you get will speak for themselves. If you change your mind or your

A male college student was struggling in his choice of careers. What he had in abilities he lacked in direction. Frustrated and somewhat depressed, he decided to let the universe decide the matter. He asked God for a sign, and was given one.

“I was walking to my car when I found a book lying in a puddle by the driver’s side door. The title read, The Psychology of Influence and Persuasion. It was so odd to find it there that I thought it might be the sign I had asked for. Thirty-five years later I still have that book, all 322 wrinkled pages of it. It’s what got me into the field of marketing and sales. God works in mysterious ways,” he reflected with a smile.

Sometimes the ways of God seem even more mysterious when we misinterpret the signs.

Although this man’s career was reasonably successful, his adult life was not a terribly happy one. Alcoholism, two divorces, and the death of a child, mirrored the discord of his inner life. When

he found the book he was a young man attracted to power. He was manipulative and self-centered in his relationships. Rather than encouraging him into a marketing career, the sign was actually telling him that his drive for influence over people needed to be dissolved. The book’s placement in a parking lot puddle also equates it with discarded trash. In other words, God doesn’t think much of his psychology of influence and persuasion.

Signs and synchronicities, like dreams, are not easily interpreted. The personality is a complex, dynamic and multileveled being. It has its own language, which takes years to learn and, even then, is never grasped in its entirety. In addition, there are forces within your personal psychology, similar to this man’s drive to power, that lead to biases in your perceptions and interpretations. Learning the language of the soul is one of the most challenging things you will do in life. But it is also one of the most important and rewarding. The right interpretation could save you from living the wrong life.

It’s said that nothing comes free in life and this is no less true of signs and dreams. God gives us the answer, but we have to decipher it. We have to do the work. We have to go deeper into ourselves—our feelings, intuition and life—to figure out the correct interpretation. We want God to speak our language, but spiritual maturity means learning to speak His. We want things black and white, but God wants consciousness and discernment. We want answers, but He wants growth and humility. Therefore, God answers our questions through the trickster, where our interpretations reveal our deeper attitudes, intentions and the depth of our sincerity. When it comes to signs and dreams, the future you get is the answer you give.

The Trickster and the Sign, part IIZeus was the central god of Greek mythology, and Hermes was his messenger. If Zeus had something to tell mankind, Hermes delivered the mail. But Hermes was also a trickster—a poser of puzzles and weaver of riddles. His messages often left the recipient scratching her head. “What does this mean? If I read it this way I get this, but if I read this other way I get that. Hermes, take this back to Zeus and ask him where the commas go.”

A young woman was in love with two men but didn’t know which one to commit to, so she prayed to God for a dream. Here is the dream she received: “My boyfriend, John, follows my father into the building where my dad practices law. They are wearing similar pinstripe suits. When they come out of the building, Carl, a man I also have strong feelings for, pulls up quickly in a red car and shoots them both dead. Then he tells me to get in the car and that he’s going to Las Vegas. Shocked at him and what he’s just done, I refuse.”

Untrusting of Carl’s motives and character after the dream, she eventually marries John. This was an unfortunate mistake that might have been avoided if she knew more about the language of dreams. On the other hand, she did get a large house with a backyard swimming pool out of the deal. Perhaps that was all she really wanted.

The young woman over-idealized her father. In marrying her boyfriend she was, essentially, marrying her father. The other man, Carl, represents a viewpoint that opposes this idealized father image. If she is going to grow beyond the dictates of society—symbolized by her attorney dad—and discover her individuality, she must choose the boyfriend who symbolically kills her father. Going to Las Vegas was a symbol of her need to take this gamble.

KIDSCORNER

“Kids Corner” Written By Ariana Purcell

Unfortunately, summer is coming to an end; school will be starting up yet again. Are you ready for the new school year? Well, maybe going through more of Sean Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” will help you get back into the routine of going to school every day.

We are now on habit seven, which is titled “Sharpen the Saw.” The author explains that habit seven is all about you. It’s all about keeping your personal self sharp so that you can better deal with life. It means, on a regular basis, renewing and strengthening the four key dimensions of your life—your body, your brain, your heart and your soul. Here is a chart to help break it down for you.

Just like a car needs an oil change and tune-up, you need the same; not oil changes of course, but you too need a little care in order to succeed in life. Looking at the chart above, each of the dimensions tell you how to keep “tuned-up.” Make sure you do this in the new school year; it will help you keep up with your sports, homework, tests, friends, family, etc. Your

life might get really busy, just make sure to take a little bit of time each week to read a book, or write a short story, pray or meditate, go to the gym and work out and eat healthy all the time. You could also try to learn some new skills, like how to make a cake from scratch. If you follow all of these great tips, I am sure your new school year will be great! Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Body The Physical Dimension Exercise, eat healthy, sleep well and relax.

Brain The Mental Dimension Read, educate, write and learn new skills.

Heart The Emotional Dimension Build relationships (RBA, PBA), give service and laugh.

Soul The Spiritual Dimension Meditate, keep a journal, pray and take in quality media.

The body’s reaction to acute or temporary dehydration is comparable to tossing a live lobster into a pot of boiling water: the reaction is swift and dramatic. The lobster will jump right out of that pot, and the human’s acute reaction would be muscle cramps, dizziness, and lethargy. Drinking water, cooling the body, and rest makes symptoms disappear within hours or a few days, depending on the severity.

The more familiar acute form of dehydration can happen anytime the body’s water supply suddenly drops below the usual level. It is more than likely precipitated by some form of strenuous activity in a hot environment. Trigger events could include bike riding 50 miles in the summer heat, a fireman doing his job, a roofer putting

down house shingles, or a soldier serving in the Middle East. It could even occur if a person’s water intake is extremely low for a few days and is then followed by even moderate exercise and heat.

Chronic dehydration is like putting that live lobster into a pot of cool water as it sits on the stove. If you then turn on the stove burner and slowly raise the water temperature to boiling, the lobster doesn’t even realize it is being cooked. In the same way, if everyday your water intake is slightly less than needed, your body will not react swiftly, nor dramatically.

Since chronic dehydration does not have the sudden and intense nature of the short-term form, you don’t notice it developing. It is a slow-building ongoing condition existing for several years or even a lifetime of inadequate water intake that it allows your body to quietly slip into this dangerous state with serious consequences.

Discounting bacterial or viral invasion and inborn conditions or accidents, Dr. Batmanghelidj says chronic pain is the body’s signal that water is desperately needed. Water is vital for every body cell to function correctly, and without healthy function, cells will degenerate.

Under normal circumstances, the body’s regulatory mechanism places more water inside its cells than it does outside them. In their study, Bruce and Associates found that from the ages of twenty to seventy, the water content inside our cells becomes less than the water outside them, so the ratio is reversed and the cells begin to shrink. We are familiar with prunes, raisins and craisins as being the dried forms of plums, grapes and cranberries. This shrinking and wrinkling is what happens to human cells as they dry out also. Because of this, the cell functions less efficiently and show symptoms which doctors try to eliminate with drugs.

Dehydration puts a strain on the entire organism. Each day, as less than the needed amount of water is consumed, the body has

to ration the inadequate liquid. First it fills the needs of the life sustaining organs of the brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, and liver. The kidneys and liver are the body’s filters for removing waste from the body. If the internal water supply is low enough, the kidneys and liver have to use the same meager supply over and over to dump cell waste into. The strain on these organs can cause damage over time.

Because cellular waste is not adequately washed away by the kidneys and liver, it remains in the body tissues and poisons them. This is one reason we become “toxic.” This causes the organs to decline in health and function. Genetic inheritance or prior damage to some body areas makes them weaker than the rest, so they are the first ones to develop dis-ease or diseases.

Since every cell requires water, any of them can suffer without it; this is why chronic dehydration symptoms are so varied. At first

a person may have constant muscle tightness or even Charley Horses. Later the cholesterol level may spike. Type II diabetes may develop. Stomach and bowel distress may be constant. The lungs may become asthmatic. When the interior water level gets low enough, even the heart and brain do not receive healthy amounts. Heart irregularities, depression, aggressive behavior, and a short attention span may occur.

The most lethal result of long-term dehydration is the diminished amount of water in the blood, causing it to become thicker and thicker as time goes by. Combine that with the cholesterol increase caused by the body’s attempt to prevent the cells from losing water, and you have the scenario for a heart attack or stroke.

Some more of the wide variety of chronic dehydration symptoms are: urinary infections, urinary leakage

under-functioning kidneys

metallic mouth taste, acrid body odor

chiropractic adjustments that don’t last

exhaustion, lack of energy, chronic fatigue syndrome

low libido

constipation

low or high blood pressure

heart pain, irregular heartbeat

stomach ulcers, indigestion, heart burn

constant stomach & colon pain, colitis

hiatal hernia, false appendicitis

allergies, asthma, cardiac asthma

acid-alkaline imbalance, gout

diabetes, weight gain or obesity, bulimia

skin irritations, varicose & spider veins

pregnancy morning sickness

growing pains in the young

childhood learning disabilities

migraine headaches

high cholesterol

rheumatism, arthritis

back, buttock, leg cramps and pain

ache-all-over feeling, irritability

depression, insomnia, aggression

inability to cope with life

inability to concentrate

immune diseases as bronchitis,

asthma, lupus, erythematous,

scleroderma, multiple sclerosis,

Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, cancer

little or no sense of thirst

thirst that cannot be satisfied

The best means for detoxifying and re-hydrating the body is by drinking enough viable water, plus ingesting electrolyte supplements. Because it took a long time to become deficient, the body may take a year or more of concentrated effort to regain a healthy hydration level. But returning to a healthy status is easy. It’s water, pure and simple.

Next month’s article will reveal how to determine if you are dehydrated. Ensuing issues will detail how our American diet and lifestyles contribute to it, attack and stroke as results, and how to effectively re-hydrate.

HOW TO PREPARE:

HOW TO PREPARE:

HOW TO PREPARE:

HOW TO PREPARE:

Mix all ingredients in a pint jar with a tightly fitting lid (once mixed, must be shaken before use!) Let stand at least an hour at room temperature before serving.

1. Measure sifted flour and salt into medium bowl; cut in lard with pastry cutter until very well blended.

2. Sprinkle with 8 T. ice water and mix lightly with fork, adding more water if needed to form soft ball.

3. Divide into 2 balls. Do not overwork dough as it will lose tenderness. Roll out on lightly floured surface.

4. Instead of putting into lightly greased pie pan, place dough on any large (11x17) cookie sheet.

5. Brush dough with melted butter. Sprinkle brown sugar. Shake on some cinnamon. Drizzle heavy cream back and forth across top from 1 end to the other.

6. Place in preheated 350 degree oven for about 12 to 15 minutes.

1. Put frozen or thawed pork ribs in large pot of water with onion.

2. Bring to full boil, reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour.

3. Drain, cool enough to handle; remove as much excess fat as you wish (remembering that we need some fat to absorb certain vitamins!) and place in 9x11 (or similar) baking pan.

4. Pour BBQ sauce over ribs. Cover with a foil tent and place in 350 degree oven for about an hour.

5. Remove foil tent; increase oven temperature to 425 degrees for about 10 to fifteen minutes. Check often after raising the heat….don’t stroll out to the garden and get sidetracked collecting your salad greens! Do that in the morning.

1. Slice zucchini in half lengthwise. Scoop out centers leaving at least ¾” of “wall.”

2. Set aside while sautéing onion, garlic, mushrooms and zucchini and steaming beet greens.

3.Lightly sauté onion, garlic, celery, sweet pepper, mushrooms and broccoli florets in olive oil and butter. When done, put into large bowl. In another bowl blend potatoes and eggs

4. Add this to sautéed veggies, mixing well. Add salt and pepper.

5. Place in baking dish, top with cheese and bake at 350 F for about 35 minutes.

6. Divide and fill zucchini halves heaping full. Sprinkle with dried parsley.

7. Place the 2 stuffed zucchini halves in an 8” square baking pan and cover with a foil tent. Pop into a preheated 350 degree F oven for about 35 minutes.

That first back-to-school day is always a special one, and so is the lunch box you prepare with great care. But what about the mornings you are running out of time or lacking inspiration? How can you make an attractive, healthy raw lunch within a few minutes that delivers food for thought? The answer is simple: create a lovely creamy nut cheese during the weekend, which keeps well all week in the refrigerator. Sprout some seeds with your kids: they love growing their own food on a windowsill. Buy a variation of greens, fresh herbs and vegetables; wash and store them nicely in green bags. Whenever you are in a hurry, all you need to do is grab some of this inviting food and wrap it up!

INGREDIENTS FOR ONE WRAP

1 large green leaf of a Chinese cabbage

2 TBSP creamy herb cheese

A few cucumber slices, sliced in fine strips

A grip of cilantro or basil

A grip of sprouts of your own choice

1 sliced radish, or some beet or carrots

A dash of sea salt

1 long sprig of chive

CREAMY HERB CHEESE

2 cups of cashew nuts, soaked for 1 to 2 hours

1 cup of spring water

¼ tsp probiotic powder or 1 capsule of probiotics

WRAP IT UP!

1. Blend the cashew nuts with the water until very smooth

2. Add the probiotics at lowest speed, or by hand

3. Transfer everything into a glass bowl and let ferment in a warm place (room temperature) for 16 hours

4. Add fresh herbs to taste (chive, thyme, rosemary, oregano, basil)

5. Add a dash of sea salt and black pepper to taste

6. Mix well and store in a sealed glass container in the refrigerator

1. Cut the leaf horizontally in half so most of the white stem is removed

3. Place whatever you like or have in your wrap on top of the cheese

4. Fold both sides towards the middle and tie the wrap together

with a chive sprig

TIPS

For info on Sprouts, go to: http://ravishingraw.com/word-press/2010/11/02/sprouting/

You can wrap up all kinds of leftovers: always surprising!

No cheese? Use a nut or cheese dressing or some Marinara Sauce instead

Go wild with dandelion as small wraps for kids who love a touch of bitter taste: very healthy!

You can use any green leaf to make wraps such as Collard Greens, Swiss Chard or Romaine lettuce

Make double the amount of the cream cheese and keep one half basic, add herbs to the other half

You can create several flavors with the cheese by adding Medi-terranean, Moroccan or Indian herbs
