1 As you might have guessed, this month’s main news is Coral Pink. We had a great trip and can’t wait for next year. We have the annual Lake Havasu trip planned for the weekend of Au- gust 14-17th. Make your plans now to join us for some summer fun. We still need a plan for a location for the club picnic. After several years of hosting the picnic, Dave and Cindy will be unable to do so this year. Does anyone have any good ideas for a place to hold the picnic? It doesn't have to be a home, we have used public parks or even the sand drags in the past. Please let Jim or any of the board members know if you have any suggestions.

Coral Pink 2009:Wednesday:

Melissa and I got up at 3:30 to leave the house by 4:15 on our way toMesquite. The drive up went well, and we got to Mesquite at 11:15. Wethen persuaded them to let us check into the nearly vacant (except for clubmembers) RV Park and set up thetrailer. We drove around town andcashed in $465 worth of loose changebefore going to the traditional dinner atPlayoff’s Pizza. It was neat that wewere able to meet up with Steve andSharon Porter who were on their wayback East on a motorhome trip but spenta few nights in Mesquite with the club.

Thursday:We got up and went to breakfast at the Eureka buffet, since the one

at the Casablanca is closed on weekdays. Then we packed up and headed forCoral Pink. W had a nice un-eventful drive and went up via the Cane Bedsdirt road, which shortens the trip by over 40 miles. We got to the camp-ground and began the process of unpacking, which included getting Shirley’sRanger out of the front of Walt’s trailer, a process that was complicated bythe fact they had ti pull the wheels off in order to make it short enough to fitin. The Tranthoms had arrived at the park from Colorado earlier in the day,and were looking forward to their first Coral Pink trip. Later Jim, Walt, and I

went for a ride to the corral to officiallybegin the trip.

Friday:This was a pretty typical Coral

Pink day. We got up, went for a ride, and then went to town for lunch. Wewent to Lotsa Motsa pizza and foundthat due to inability to find a bread sup-

plier, they no longer have the sandwiches we enjoyed so much. Thestill have the $5 pizza buffet, and it was good but we are looking for-ward to getting the sandwiches back. We got back to camp and wentfor another ride before sitting around the tables and hanging out beforebed.

Saturday:We started the day with another ride, then took the Excursion

into town for lunch and shopping. We ate at a new Mexican restauranton the North end of town and it was quite good sit down Mexican food.We did some thrift store shopping and even found a garage sale. As wepulled into one thrift store, a nice lady followed us in and mentionedthat something looked strange about our rear tire. It had a bubble thesize of my fist on the inside sidewall of the right rear tire. We went to the tire shop, but realized that the tire was one thatstill had a warranty from America’s Tire. We changed it in the grocery store parking lot while Melissa called our River-side America’s tire and found out they do have a store in St. George. We called them and made plans to go in on Mon-

day to get new tires, since Melissa and I had wanted to take that side trip any-way. We went back to camp and went for another ride before dinner, niceshowers, and sleep.

Sunday:Since most everything is closed on Sunday in Utah, we stayed in the

park for the day. We went for two rides and sat around in the shade of thegroup site playing games, snacking, and talking.

Monday:Melissa and I got up and

headed for St. George to get tires andplay around shopping in Utah. My

parents agreed to watch the dogs for us so we could go by ourselves and nothave to worry about them, which worked out great. We decided to go out thedirt road to Cane Beds on the way there, but to come back via Cedar Citywhich is north of Zion. We had a great day and it was neat to have somethingthat was fun for Melissa to do since she is eight months pregnant and wasn’tgoing on any of the other rides. We got the tire replaced for free, and bought anew matching one for the other side so that all four tires would be new this

month on the Excursion. We went to Costco and lots of Pawn shows and thriftstores, and headed to Cedar City for more shopping and looking around. Ce-dar City is about 40 minutes north of St. George on I-15 and was a nice placeto look around. Then we headed towards camp on Utah 14, a scenic bywaythat climbs to 9910 feet in about 20 miles. The drive was beautiful, and it wentfrom being 93 degrees in Cedar City to 66 degrees at the peak. We then tookHwy 89 back down to camp and ended a very fun day.

Tuesday:This was the day we decided to go to the Thunderbird restaurant in Mt.

Carmel Junction for breakfast. We loaded people in 5 trucks and headed out at8 AM. The breakfast was nice, and they were able to seat the group of 13 people together which doesn’t always happen. The some of us went on into town while Mike and Mona headed to explore Panguitch. Jim and I went to explore trailssouth of the campground and then went for a sunset ride in the lower dunes to test Don’s carburetor on his car, which hehad changed earlier in the day.

Wednesday:We started the day with a morning ride with all of the cars and Mike

taking pictures. He got some great shots. Then Don lost a belt and decided tohead back while Kris Jim, Walt and I went on to the upper dunes. After we allmade it back to camp, Melissa and I went into town with my parents and didsome shopping and looked for a throw out bearing for my car, since mine wasmaking noise. We didn’t end up finding one, but we met some nice locals whohad recommendations on where we might find one. One place even suggestedwe check at the mortuary, since their son is into VWs. One nice guy said hewould check out some old transmissions he had in Fredonia, but later welearned none of them had the bearings. We ended up finding that we had a used

one in camp, and Walt offered a new one. We took the transmission out that night and replaced it before it hurt the pres-sure plate.

Thursday:This might have been just about the per-

fect Coral Pink day. It started with a morningride with all the buggies. We got some neatvideo from a camera that we mounted on Jim’scar facing backwards. Don came back earlysince he was having alternator issues and a littleoverheating. The rest of us continued on andhad a great ride. Then most everybody wentinto Kanab for lunch. We shopped around someand then headed back to camp. It was one of thewarmer days, with the temperature reaching 100degrees before the clouds came in and it cooledoff. We worked on fixing Don’s power steeringhose that had popped off and then went for anice sunset ride. We got some nice video of it,and met up with Kris, Doug, Mike, and Monaon the Rangers for a sunset break. Then wecame back to camp and had a campfire at Jerryand Linda’s space, since they had moved intospace 5 which is right next to the group site.

Friday:We had a great last full day at Coral Pink. We started with a fast ride in the morning and got some good video

of the trip to the corral and back. Then almost everybody went in to town for lunch and to top off on fuel before the tripto Mesquite tomorrow. We got everybody together at the group site forsome group pictures and then we went for one last ride. We might possi-bly have saved the best for last, and we have the video to show that wewere really moving. For the first part of the ride we had the camera onJim’s car pointing back at me, Walt, and Kris, who were all roosting andflying through the dunes. At the break Kris offered to put the camera onher car and we got video of Walt throwing a lot of sand. (Even a little toomuch for Kris a couple of times…) We then met up with the Rangers andRhinos just outside the camp entrance for a nice sunset break before start-ing to pack up.

Saturday:This is probably the least fun day of the trip, but it is made better

by the fact the trip isn’t totally over yet since most of us get to stay in Mesquite one more night. Kris and Doug andMike and Mona left early, while the rest of us packed up a little more slowly but were still on the road by 11:00. Wegave the Rangers a CD with our pictures on it and told them we were looking forward to next year. Then both sets ofKastles, Walt, and the Fords headed for Mesquite after saying goodbye to the Tranthams who were headed towardsColorado. After an uneventful trip down the steep Hurricane hill we followed Jim through the traffic signal in town, which irritated a Hurricane police officer who pulled up and was waiting to make a right turn. He pulled both Walt andme over, while Don smartly yielded to the nice officer and thenwaited as he spoke with both of us and gave us a written and finan-cial reminder to yield. We didn’t get any pictures, but I don’t thinkany of us will forget it anytime soon. We headed on out of Utahand avoided any further misdemeanors on the way to Mesquite. Then we all went to the Eureka buffet for dinner, which was excel-lent.

Sunday:To end the trip, everybody got up and headed for home.

Kris and Doug left early, followed by Don, Shirley, and Walt whowere headed for Havasu. Jim and Nancy were headed for the riverat Cottonwood Cove to meet up with the Coles on Tuesday, andMelissa and I headed for Riverside. We got home that evening andbegan the process of unpacking and cleaning up after 10 days ofduning fun.

As with any organization there are guidelines we operate within. Please read and abide by the following:1. NO FIREWORKS ALLOWED WITHIN CAMP BOUNDRIES2. DOGS MUST BE KEPT UNDER CONTROL AT ALL TIMES (BLM law)3. ON A RIDE, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF YOU AND THE VEHICLE BEHIND

YOU. If they stop, you stop and wait for the group to return to you. This prevents separation and in this manner wenever leave a member in the dunes. Remember, it’s easier to find you if you stay still: “a moving target is harder to hit”

4. PLEASE OBSERVE THE “RIDE RATINGS” ON THE CLUB BOARD AND SELECT THOSE RIDES YOU WISHTO PARTICIPATE IN. If you wish to lead a ride, put the time and type of ride you want to lead on the board and thenstick to that time. No passing on rides (except #6 rides). You can always change your place in line at a break or if youare waved on by the driver ahead of you.

5. REMEMBER, WE ARE A GROUP OF FRIENDS who share a common interest in riding in the desert. Always keep inmind how your actions affect the other members.
