In closing for now, all of us here at Spot thank you SO MUCH for 3 wonderful years, and we invite you to stick close for the fun ahead. We treasure your input, efforts and con-nections, and look ahead with great anticipation — while standing here today with a little birthday cupcake (with a pawprint on top, of course!), smiles and happy hearts.

As Spot grows, so does our com-munity involvement, our efforts in rescue and spay/neuter, and our partnerships supporting all the organizations serving pets and their people in the Northwest. I hope you’ll join us as we grow stronger, becoming ever better at doing the most good for the greatest number. It’s glorious,

And now you have in your hands the best referral for pet services and products next to a trusted friend: these winners are the best according to you and your fellow Spot readers.

In addition to the Top Dog Award winners, check out our beautiful cover models, page 26. These babies posed at the Pet & Companion Fair last spring, ponied up a few bucks for spay/neuter (thank you!), and patiently waited for their moment in the SPOTlight. And here they are! In case you’re wondering, our winning cover boy Destry was chosen randomly; no way I’m judging these babies — they’re all beautiful to me! I’m sure you’ll agree.

Happy Birthday to Spot! The magazine turns 3 with this issue, and we’ve been par-

Our family believes that DOGS DIG IT!!! is the best dog care place ever!! My 3 Cairn Terriers love to visit. As

soon as we are within 3 blocks they start going nuts. They are so excited to get to play with their other buddies and the nice people who are so attentive and loving toward them. The first time I took them the caregivers did an evaluation test with them before they put them in with others to make sure it was going to fit. I really appreci-ated the extra care they show my guys.

To the editor:

Greetings! Last Sunday at the Healthy Pet grand opening [in Eugene], my son Chris bought the Spot Bag of

goodies, and you and Marnie photographed his beloved tiny black and white Chihuahua, Belle.

I just wanted to tell you how happy it made Chris. Last Thanksgiving he had a brain aneurysm, and it was touch and go. I’m sure that Belle helped him pull through and heal so quickly.

The prospect of seeing Belle’s photo in your great little magazine has given Chris something fun to look forward to.

Thanks so much,Carole Biondello

Pyou know what I’m talking about. The good news is that it’s possible to teach your puppy to be gentle with their mouth and not bite so hard or often. There are several key ingredients to teaching your puppy not to be so mouthy — 1) Patience, 2) Consistency, and 3) Time.

While you’re working on devel-oping your puppy’s soft mouth it’s important to keep all three of these ingredients in mind and remember that you’re raising a little baby who speaks dog, and dogs use their mouths. So when your puppy grabs hold of your delicate skin and it hurts remember that he’s not intentionally trying to hurt you; he’s just being a puppy, and it’s your job to help teach him how to commu-nicate with you in a different way.

your dog to do and he’s not hesitat-ing or getting up before you release him, increase the amount of time you ask your dog to sit before you release him.

How it looks:

1. Sit, Reward, Release

2. Sit, Count to One, Reward, Release (always reward before releasing)

3. Sit, Count to Two, Reward, Release

Problem Solving:

If your dog is getting up and moving before you release him, you are asking him to sit longer than he is capable. Back up to where you were having success and continue working there until your dog is able to have success 4 out of 5 times, then increase the level of difficulty.

Once your dog is easily able to sit for 5 or more seconds before you release him, begin adding the door opening, then knocking or bell ringing.

Step 1: Decide what you want your dog to do when someone knocks or rings the bell, and then teach your dog what you want them to do. I ask my dogs to sit on a rug about 3 feet away from the door until I release them.

Working with your dog off leash, gather all of your training tools and walk to the door. Ask your dog to sit (position yourself so that he sits easily in the location you want), and as soon as his butt hits the floor, reward, then release, using your release cue. Repeat this process of cueing a sit, rewarding, then releas-ing, 5-10 times. When it’s easy for

How it looks:

4. Sit, Reward, Slowly Open Door, Reward, Close Door, Reward, Release (repeat until your dog is success-ful 8 out of 10 times)

5. Sit, Count to One, Reward, Slowly Open Door, Reward, Close Door, Reward, Release (always reward before releasing)

Keys to Success

Gradually increase the level of dif-ficulty:

Step 1: Sit until released at the front door without any distractions.

Step 2: Sit until released at the front door if you open the front door.

Step 3: Sit until released at the front door if you open the front door and someone is standing outside.

Step 4: Sit until released at the front door if someone knocks on the door.

Step 5: Put it all together, sit at the door when someone knocks and your dog isn’t expecting it. If any of the previous steps are weak your dog will continue to struggle with this step.

If you have questions, contact Jennifer at 541.686.6768, or [email protected]. Or visit her Web site at www.dogandcat.org.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if your dog sat quietly at the door when the bell

rang, rather than crowd you for a position to greet, or eat, the visitor?

Training Tools:

• High-value treats: hot dog, cheese, hamburger, chicken, etc.

• Eventually you will need someone to help you ring the doorbell, but not until you have the foundation behaviors in place.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane! Nope, it’s just me, Ruckus, cruzin’ down the road on my dad’s Harley!

Boy have I got a cool thing for all of you this month, and just in time for the 1sSee SPOT Ride. My new Beast Rhas arrived! My ‘Beasty’ is juas comfortable as my bed, and far more fun. Just a few straps and it’s safe and secure for me to ride passenger on Dad’s bike. Of course I’d rather be driving, but some-times even Bulldogs have to take the back seat. Let’s just think of it as a chauffer driven Harlousine!

Each of these amazing seats is custom built for each dog. They fit from 5-75 pounds safely and comfortably, so even my sister Libby or my brother Bogie can go if they want!

Check them out for yourself at www.beastriders.com, or call 800.735.7372. Deb is the owner and she is REALLY help-ful. She helped my mom measure me for my

harness and K-noggles so everything fits just right. Oh, yeah: my K-noggles! Don’t

forget to check them out too! They don’t even squish my eyes, so I can see the sites while cruzin’ down the road! Remember to tell them that Ruckus

sent you and they will take really good care of you, too!

Don’t forget that if you have a favorite person, place or thing that your pet can’t live without you can email me at [email protected], and maybe I can check it out. Even as picky as a Bulldog is, you never know, it could be my

favorite!

Smell you soon,

SimbaHello everyone my name is Simba and I am a nine year old, 15 lb. Corgi/Terrier mix with a true

rescue story. I was brought to Portland nine months ago from Beirut, Lebanon by a wonderful rescue group. I had a home most of my life until my dad told my mom that she needed to “get rid of me” or she had to get out and take me with her! I was so lucky to be rescued and brought to the U.S. where I hope to find my forever home.

I am GREAT with other animals, both doggies and kitties, and I am very, very loving. I do bark when new people come into the house, but as soon as they give me a little pet I will sit right next to them and happily take pets! I walk wonderfully on a leash and love to go for strolls and smell the roses, but I don’t require much exercise. I am perfectly house- and crate-trained. Because I spent most of my life very hungry I do get nervous about sharing my food, so I would like a home with no kids under 12 please.I am fixed, vaccinated and microchipped.

If you would like to meet me and maybe give me the home I dream so much about, please contact the Pixie Project at [email protected] or 503.542.6433.

Sincerely,Mr. Simba A. Sweet

GOURMUTT DOG BAKERY

If you are looking for the ulti-mutt in spoiling your pampered pooch it’s worth the visit to Bone-Jour GourMutt Dog Bakery located in the West Linn Central Village. Here you’ll fi nd wholesome, healthy dog treats baked fresh daily. All treats are baked with Bob’s Red Mill Flours and have NO wheat, corn, soy, salt or preservatives. Each recipe and all ingredients have been carefully gone through by two veterinarians, and an additional seven vets purchase these treats for their own dogs. Bone-Jour was created out of the love of the owners for their Wire Fox Terrier who was a rescue dog. His mistreatment left him with severe allergies. A healthy alternative was to bake fresh treats. The treats soon became a requested item from friends and family, and then grew to friends of friends. It became apparent that it was time to open a shop that any dog could come to and have a wonderful bonding experience with their owner and at the same time enjoy healthy treats. Bone-Jour looks like a “French Bakery.” Dogs are welcome. There is even a boutique full of gifts, dog clothing and accessories, and custom gift baskets that will have any pampered pooch shopping in style. We think that Bone-Jour is an idea of its time.

Oregon pet lover Maria Iliaifar was skeptical when she first walked into Doggy Delight Boutique and Self Service Dog Spa in Hill-

sboro. She had seen the place many times, but felt “boutiques can be snooty.” That day, all that changed. “I had just adopted a dog from All Breed Rescue and wanted to get him some clothes,” Iliafar says. “The owners were right there and so helpful and knowledgeable.”

During a second visit a few days later, Iliafar was again pleasantly surprised when she took her Lhasa Apso/Shitsu mix, Tracker, in for grooming. Owner Melissa Watters spent time with Tracker, and then advised Iliafar that a change in his diet would help his itchy skin. The new food worked. Tracker was happy, and Iliafar found the name of her new favor-

ite shop fit — it was a Delight. Now a year later, Iliafir and Tracker remain happy, devoted clients.

Gina Larson has two rambunctious furry kids — Sammy and Rocky — whom she adores. The two Australian Shepherd/Blue Heeler mixes were a handful, difficult to walkon leash. Larson decided to check out Doggy Delight.

Again, Watters came to the rescue. She recom-mended a nifty no-pull harness that Larson says allows her to walk the troublesome duo with ease. Watters also helped Larson with one of her pup’s allergies. “Everyone is so nice and helpful and will-ing to take time with you,” says Larson. “I wouldn’t go anywhere else for pet products.”

Doggy Delight is many things. The boutique and spa offers grooming, a self-service dog wash, all things boutique and spa, and — last but not least in the stellar lineup: a bakery. When asked how she manages the many facets of her business so suc-cessfully, Watters says that balance and time management are key.

Watters originally wanted to open her unique boutique in 2001, but as she shared her concept with others she found many nay-sayers. No one seemed to think a dog boutique would fly.

In 2004, she took the plunge. And she’s never looked back. Originally the business’s emphasis was groom-ing and self-service wash. Then the boutique took off like wildfire.

When asked why so many people (and their furry friends) love Doggy Delight, Watters attributed it to the small family atmosphere and that the owner is on site. “We identify what the dog needs,” she says. “We find answers for our clients and we give personalized attention.”

One client, a sweet Cocker Spaniel mix, puzzled his guardian by gently

ramming his face into her hands after visiting Doggy Delight. The woman asked Watters what she thought. Laughing as she tells the story, Watters says it turned out the furry guy was trying to replicate the blueberry facial he had received at the spa!

In addition to canines, Doggy Delight’s clients have included cats, ferrets, raccoons, and even pygmy goats. One day a new arrival, when asked whether she had a dog or a cat, opened her carrier, and out popped a tiny wallaby, who pro-ceeded to hop all over the store.

Watters says even when the economy slows down, it’s impor-tant to spend enough on our pets. Consistent grooming and good food (they sell Solid Gold and California Natural, both excellent) can save a great deal in vet bills later on.

The spa experience includes blueberry, laurel and other scents that relax and calm. Furry clients love the affection and attention of the pampering experience.

Check out Doggy Delight. Your best friend will thank you!

BehavioristKIRSTEN NIELSEN PhDClasses offered exclusively at Schroeder’s Den Daycare for Dogs2110 NW Aloclek Dr Suite 620, Hillsboro Ore 97124Private training by appointment: 503.307.3168 www.kirstenn.com

Kirsten Nielsen, Ph.D. has been a professional dog trainer since 1995. She currently runs the weekly “Puppy Romp” and teaches classes exclusively at Schroeder’s Den Daycare in Hillsboro, as well as offering private consultations. Rather than relying on one particular training method, Kirsten helps owners discover what works best in their situation.

Established 1995; Became CPDT (certifi ed pet dog trainer)in 2002

Philosophy/Mission Rather than relying on one particular training method, I prefer to help you discover what works best for you and your dog. In general, I emphasize using praise and intrinsic rewards (e.g., getting attention) to teach dogs good habits in any situation. With this approach, owners can achieve results even if treats or training equipment are unavailable. I strive to be the best teacher I can so that my students understand the philosophy behind the training. That way they can adapt to any new training challenges they encounter. Above all, I want to help owners provide a better life for their dogs through understanding their dogs’ needs and through fun and effective training.

Signature Product or Service Puppy Romp — a weekly play hour we established as a safe way to socialize puppies.

Grand-slam 1st Place winner in Spot’s 2008 Top Dog Awards — in not one but two categories: Pet-Friendly Pub and Pet-Friendly Restaurant (yes they’re distinctive,

and yes competition was stiff!) — Lucky Lab pubs are beloved staples on the menus of pet-loving Portlanders. It wasn’t planned that way, says co-owner Gary Geist, it just happened.

The year was 1994, and folks just started showing up with their dogs at the outdoor picnic tables at the popular brew pubs. Staff took note and decided that as long as the pooches were

outside and not causing problems, no problem! Now Geist estimates that about 10% of their diners bring their pups along.

“It’s a very casual thing,” says Geist. “Dogs, good food and beer just seem to go together. The prices are great, and our pubs are a fun place to hang out with your dog.”

In October 1995, Geist and another co-owner, Alex Stiles, decided to give back to the canine community that had been so good to them. That month they organized a dog wash at their Hawthorne location. They called it Tales and Ales; it was free, and just Geist and Stiles did the washing. While a lot of work, it was a great time, and it grew into a major fundraiser for DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital.

Today the event brings in a whopping $15,000 to $20,000 (all donated to DoveLewis), and there is an army of volunteers. Local celebrities, such as Portland Mayor-Elect, Sam Adams and the entire court of the Rose Festival Princesses, have been seen on the scene, up to their elbows in bubbles.

The Lab’s helping efforts go well beyond the washes. Conduct-ing blood drives for both humans and dogs, this year the company partnered with the American Red Cross and DoveLewis Super-heroes Blood Bank to boost the local supply of lifesaving blood. Last May, Lucky Lab had a special event at its Quimby Street pub (just a few paw-steps from Dove), helping celebrate the hospital’s 35th anniversary with a dog wash, blood drive, and dancing to music by Off The Record.

The Hawthorne pub provides a water keg and buckets for thirsty four-leggeds, and sturdy posts and picnic tables to leash them.

Geist loves having dogs and their people visit his pubs. The one request he has is that folks keep their friends on leash to ensure the safety and comfort of all.

of his new hospital to reflect the values his wife held so dear.

Originally the clinic operated only during the hours regular vets were closed — evenings, weekends and holidays. Then in June 1992, the clinic went to 24/7 operations, every day of the year. Dove is the only nonprofit emergency animal hospital in Oregon.

As the agency has evolved, it has become an innovative and vital part of the Oregondomestic animal and wildlife community. Its unique, lifesaving programs benefit many ani-mals and people.

One of Dove’s best-known programs is its Pet Loss Support Program (featured in Spot May 2008), begun in 1986 by Enid Traisman. MSW C.T. C.F.S. Traisman’s program provides free grief counseling to those suffering the loss of their beloved companion. It takes a special soul to successfully do the work Traisman does, and her reach extends beyond Oregonians: in October 2005 she flew to New Orleans to coun-sel folks who’d lost pets to Katrina. In 2006, she provided grief counseling to the Oregon Zoo’s elephant team after Pet was euthanized. She is at the zoo again at the time of this writing, coun-seling the wolf team, which is grieving the loss of Marcus, the 13-year-old wolf euthanized this week. Marcus was the last wolf at the zoo, and many of his keepers raised him from a pup.

No injured animal is ever turned away at Dove. Last year, the organization spent $225,000 in donor funds to care for the lost and abandoned, both domestic and wild. Animals arrive at Dove through many paths — thanks to its Stray Animal and Wildlife Program — including police and fire officers who place injured animals in its care. The agency also works closely with the Audubon Soci-ety of Portland, which takes over when Dove’s work is done.

Another facet of this shining local gem is its Animal Assisted Therapy and Education Program, which sends human-animal teams to hospitals, schools and libraries. These goodwill teams assist people of all ages, in many different

settings. The Read to The Dogs Program pairs well-trained dogs with young readers, boosting their reading and social skills.

The Dove Lewis Blood Bank provides enough blood for 1,000 transfusions for dogs and cats each year. That’s thanks to a roster of over 300 furry donors.

With so much to celebrate, the folks at Dove decided they’re not just doing it up in a day — this party’s going on all year long!

One element of the celebration is the Dove35 Campaign, whose goal is to raise $350,000 to sup-port Dove’s many programs and services. Learn more about the campaign at Dove35.com.

August 10, 4-8pm, is the big bash, a celebra-tion in Portland’s living room, Pioneer Courthouse Square, and everyone’s invited to join in for live music, fun giveaways, face painting and paw printing.

Many pet lovers residing in the Northwest have had a chance to meet DoveLewis at one time or another — whether during a late-night or evening medical situation with a pet, time spent memorial-izing their beloved in one of the free monthly art workshops, or as one of its superheroes helping sustain the precious blood supply — Dove is known and trusted. Speaking for those of us who have personally been served by the wonderful professionals and programs, “We love Dove!”

Anyone who loves pets in Portland knows the name DoveLewis. The beloved and acclaimed emergency animal hospital

turns 35 this year, and there’s plenty to cel-ebrate!

The hospital was established 35 years ago, when prominent businessman A.B. Lewis teamed up with five veterinarians seeking to provide care to clients when they weren’t available. Lewis provided the much-needed startup money and support. That small group of doctors eventu-ally became the Portland Veterinary Medi-cal Association, which still exists today. The hos-pital was named for Lewis’s cher-ished late wife, Dove.

Dove Lewis ran her family’s grooming busi-ness, which was so successful folks flew their dogs in from around the country to be groomed. She also rescued strays, and once had 14 dogs at her home. She simply loved animals. A.B. Lewis wanted the mission

The Be Bop USA Wonder Wallet shows just how much you love your dog! The leather wallet slides onto any Be Bop USA collar, leash or harness to keep those pesky tags silent. As if that wasn’t enough, add a little essential oil to the all natural fiber inside the Wonder Wallet. Lavender may help to relax the senses, Jasmine may help your dog to be bright eyed and bushy tailed, Ylang Ylang may help your dog go “Yeah! Yeah!”. If your pooch needs a little “get up and go”, put a drop of peppermint and step back! And if he’s been a really good dog, slip him a buck every now and then.

SOLUTIONSwww.behavetraining.com [email protected]

Established 2005 Proprietor Jessica Blake and Denise Mullenix

Philosophy/Mission Behave’s mission is to provide humane dog training with an emphasis on motivation and positive leadership. Even small behavior problems can make living with your dog stressful at times. Training should not only address these problems and help you enjoy being with your pet, but it should also be fun for both of you. We understand that your relationship with your dog is very important, and your training program should enhance this. We will show you how to get your dog to respect your leadership without you having to resort to physical punishment or outdated dominance theory.

Claim to Fame/Signature Product or Service Behave offers everything from puppy and basic training to behavior consultations. We specialize in working with behavioral cases with dogs who are displaying reactivity, aggression,

or anxiety. Our puppy preschool has been featured on ABC news, and our Growly Dog classes (for on-leash reactivity) are being highlighted nationally through syndicated news stories with Fox Channel 12.

Community Involvement, Special Notes In addition to continuously working to grow as trainers and as a business, we hope to contribute to a growing community of like-minded pet businesses and rescue groups. We love working with other professionals and are members of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, International Association of Canine Professionals, and have helped to start a local dog trainer’s group. We provide assistance to shelters and rescue groups including Multnomah County Animal Services, Pixie Project and Animal Aid.

Mission My personal mission is to strengthen the human-animal bond by developing trust with my clients through education and by creating a tailored health care plan that optimizes both physical and behavioral health. Upon graduation from Oregon State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, I learned quickly that medical knowledge and a warm personality can only take you so far. What has helped me to become who I am today, and likely why I am being recognized as a “Top Dog,” is my ability to bond with my clients through compassion, understanding and the ability to convey that I care for their furry friends as if they were my own. I have come to realize that there is equally as much art in veterinary medicine as there is science. This art requires a delicate balance of trust, compassion, intuition into the lives of those who cannot directly communicate, a vast knowledge of therapies new and old, and the ability to convey what I believe is right and why. As I practice, I strive to perfect this art form each day, and it has served me well. I also bring with me special interest in internal medicine, endoscopy and dentistry. I try to remain active within the community and volunteer time to organizations such as the Feral Cat Coalition and the Molly Thompson Memorial foundation. I share my home with my wife Sarah, daughter Lilly, dog Maya, and two kitties, Adik and Rugan.

Connie Theil • Spot Magazine

For nearly 100 years pet owners have trusted Rose City Veterinary Hospital in Portland with the care of their best

friends. It is the oldest (and you could also say newest ) pet hospital in Oregon. The clinic is a veritable institution. At the same time, it is a shining model of what a modern, efficient vet should be.

In 1908, G.H. Huthman, of a respected Oregon family, attended San Francisco Veterinary College. He graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Surgery in 1911 and returned to Portland where he established the Rose City Veterinary Hospital at the corner of SE 7th and Grant. The hospital was the first incorporated institution of its kind in the state.

Huthman’s practice mainly catered to small animals, mainly companion pets, but he also treated larger animals, and had a stable in his hospital. His office was once a firehouse, and Huthman used the iron fire pole to get downstairs quickly to use his horse and buggy to race off to care for patients in need. The practice moved to 809 SE Powell Blvd in the 1950s.

In 1996, Dr. Craig Quirk purchased the practice and completely renovated the facility according to his personal vision.

While boasting no stable or fire pole to slide down, today the gleaming, modern edifice features a beautiful courtyard with a fountain, Internet access in the waiting room, and state-of-the-art equipment in the exam rooms. The exam rooms are spotless, the treatment areas shining.

Quirk’s vision was fueled by one primary aim: providing quality veterinary care — and for the surroundings to match the level of service provided. Quirk turned his building

into an oasis of calm and tranquility for pets and their people.

Rose City Vet is equipped to provide diagnostic and therapeutic services for all the needs of its furry clients. The practice is equipped to do in-house blood analysis, mobile ultrasound, complete surgical ser-vices, dietary and behavioral counseling, and emergency care. Digital radiography is fast and efficient, and ear-cleaning by video

scope helps boost pets’ over-all health. Yep! Clean ears are that important! Quirk takes pride in his practice’s capa-bilities in laser surgery, which is state-of-the-art, ensuring less pain and swelling than regular surgery.

Like many of its coun-terparts caring for human patients, the clinic also has an on-site pharmacy. The

full-service pharmacy and prescription food center provides quality and convenience to its busy clients.

Built for comfort — both physical and psychological, the courtyard waiting room is a soothing, inviting space complete with rock garden, dramatic lighting and beautiful foli-age. Adding even more comfort is a children’s

play area, fresh-baked cookies, coffee and soda. The Internet workstation allows busy urban pet owners to do business while they wait for their best friends. Modern art adorns the walls.

Rose City Vet also offers boarding, and folks concerned about or just missing their babies can check in on them anytime via web-cam. The kennels are gorgeous. The executive suite boasts a TV (for those who want to watch Animal Planet or America’s Funniest Animals), and the lucky pups head out for walks two or three times each day.

“We treat everyone’s pets as if they were our own” says manager Jasmine Bachrach. “The staff is phenomenal — I’ve never worked with such an amazing group. They are friendly, outgoing, and excellent at follow-up — which is critical. They are really good at educating our clients, and giving out as much information as possible.”

Every aspect of excellent care is attended to. Heated tables keep kitties from getting a chill. In addition to Veterinarians, the staff boasts two specialists: Dr. Randi Brannan, board certified animal dental specialist, and Jacqui Neilson, certified animal behaviorist.

These are just a few of the reasons Rose

City Vet is still thriving after 97

years. Dr. Huth-man would be proud!

OHS announces photo contest winner

Oregon Humane Society’s annual Fuzzy, Furry, and Feathered Friends Photo Contest has wrapped, with judges choosing the best photos of pets from over 2,200 entries.

From beloved dogs, fuzzy kittens, nuzzling horses, hungry squirrels, to a tiny lamb, the photos show a true appreciation and love of animals.

Prizes for the winning entries were supplied by Pro Photo Supply and Canon USA.

The Grand Prize went to Chris Pokorny for his photograph of Zoey, a black Lab who was soaking in the sun on Canon Beach. The photo captures the image of a big, wet dog in pure bliss. Zoey’s image will be the cover of the OHS Summer 2008 Magazine, distributed to 25,000 households and businesses

in July. All first-place photos are featured inside the issue, and at oregonhumane.org/contest/Photo_Contest_2008.htm.

Whole Foods introduces good chow for dogs

Whole Foods Market, a trusted and leading source of natural and organic foods, has introduced a delicious, nutritious product for pups. Every ingredient in the new 365 Everyday Value Holistic pet food is selected to nourish the whole pet, from oatmeal for a healthy digestive system to Menhaden Fish Oil for maintaining the central nervous system. No by-products are used, ingredients are human-grade quality, and — natch — there are never artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.

Beating the heat means saving lives

Of all pets, dogs are the most subject to heatstroke. Bulldogs and overweight canines of any breed are the most frequent victims. Dogs with fine, heavy coats tend to suffer most, and should be clipped in the summer.

Dogs have few sweat glands; they keep cool through evaporation of the body fluids from the throat and mouth, thus heavy panting. When the animal is cool, the panting generally stops.

Panting can also indicate thirst or stress. In the case of heatstroke, however, panting is sharp and continuous. The dog seems to be “burning up,” his tongue turns purple, and he has difficulty catching his breath.

If heat stroke is suspected, do two things first: call your vet, and cool the baby immediately. Lay her on a flat surface and soak thoroughly with cold water. Set a fan a few feet away, blowing directly on her, and keep adding water as it evaporates.
