Welcome to the 2012 Audemars Piguet QE II Cup to be held on Sunday 29th April. This year, the local contingents will face strong challenges from four overseas contenders, namely

Irish Derby hero Treasure Beach, high-class Japanese challenger Rulership, the redoubtable South African raider Viscount Nelson and the returning French contender, Chinchon.

In the FORM GUIDE, the PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS table provides you with a bird-eye's

view of the race. This at-a-glance guide gives you a full form summary of the horses in a simple and concise table.

Another handy tool is the INTERNATIONAL RATINGS CHART. In weight-for-age races like

the Audemars Piguet QE II Cup, generally speaking, the higher a horse's rating, which is based on racing performance, the better its chance to win.

A preliminary SPEED CHART has been included to assist in identifying likely positions in

running. Please note that this is preliminary only and the full Speed Map will be available after barrier draw in the SpeedPOWER Form Guide on www.hkjc.com/english/formguide/formguide.asp.

If you need further information and analysis, just flip over to the next section where you will find

There is no genuine leader and the barrier draw is likely to determine

which horses elect to go forward and take up the running. Rulership

regularly races handy and most likely will lead at a slow tempo, and

horses such as Treasure Beach, Zaidan, Fay Fay and Pure Champion

will be close up. Sweet Orange suffered because of the slow tempo in the

Derby and connections may decide to have him closer to avoid similar

problems, particularly if drawn well.

Runner-up to Ambitious Dragon in this race last year, he got the better of that rival when beating a top international field in the G1 CXHK Cup over the course and distance in December; that form was reversed on next two starts when third over an inadequate 1600m in the Stewards’ Cup and in the 2000m Citibank HK Gold Cup. Well below his best when beaten 13 lengths in the G1 Dubai Duty Free at Meydan on 31 March. Usually held up for a surging stretch run; no ground issues.

Chadwick, Matthew

Aged 21, and a product of the HKJC Apprentice Jockeys’ School, Matthew Chadwick remains the wunderkind of HK racing. He has already crammed 165 winners into his short Hong Kong career, 43 of them last season and 31 in the current campaign up to 9 April. He was champion apprentice in 2008/09, and finished fourth in the jockeys' premiership in 2009/10 even though he only became a fully fledged jockey mid-season. He was indentured to the stable of Tony Cruz before taking out a full jockey's licence in January 2010, and his partnership with Cruz has been a fruitful one. He rode his first Group race winner on Egyptian Ra in the HKG3 National Day Cup in October 2009. He has struck up a fine partnership with California Memory on whom he landed the 2011 HKG1 Citibank Hong Kong Gold Cup and was second in that year’s AP QEII Cup. The grey gave him his biggest victory to date in the G1 CXHK Cup in December.

Doleuze, Olivier Aged 40, former champion apprentice in France, Olivier Doleuze rode mostly for Criquette Head-Maarek in his homeland where he enjoyed Classic wins on Green Tune and Egyptband. He won the 2001 Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Sprint (Singapore G1) for the same stable on Iron Mask. His best Hong Kong season came in 2006/07 when he rode 67 winners, the highlight being his victory on The Duke in the CXHK Mile, a race he won again in 2007 and 2009 on the great Good Ba Ba. Adding another G1 success with Dim Sum in the HKG1 Chairman's Sprint Prize, he rode 38 winners in 2010/11, and has already surpassed that total this season (as of 16 April) for a Hong Kong career total to 414. This campaign has yielded a further HKG1 win on Zaidan in the MBHK Classic Cup.

Lloyd, Jeffrey

Aged 50, Jeff Lloyd has partnered more than 4,400 winners during an international career. He became the first to ride over 4,000 victories in his native South Africa, also breaking the record for wins in a season - 313. He has been crowned South Africa's Champion Jockey on six occasions and Mauritius champion five times. He has ridden 87 G1 winners in his homeland, in Hong Kong, Australia (the AJC Derby) and Singapore (Singapore Gold Cup), as well as over 90 G2 and over 60 G3 successes. Lloyd finished fourth in his first Sydney jockeys' premiership. He also rode in Hong Kong during the 1993/1994 racing season, landing nine winners. In 2010/11 he partnered 35 winners and has added 24 this season, for a Hong Kong career total of 123 (as of 16 April). His biggest HK win came in December aboard Able One in the G1 CXHK Mile.

Marwing, Weichong

Aged 42, Marwing rode one of the all-time greats of the turf in South Africa, the Triple Crown winner, Horse Chestnut, in between amassing winners in HK. Some of his biggest HK wins were for Ivan Allan in the 2001 Chairman's Sprint Prize on Fairy King Prawn, and a G1 treble in the HK Classic Mile, HK Derby and HK Mile on Olympic Express - all in 2002. His most memorable HK victories came in the AP QEII Cup; in 2010 he scored on Viva Pataca, a race in which that champion became the leading prize money winner in Hong Kong racing history, while 2006 brought a thrilling win aboard Irridescence for Mike de Kock. He used to ride for the powerful de Kock stable in South Africa and Dubai, enjoying major success on the likes of Grand Emporium, Asiatic Boy and Greys Inn. Rode 32 winners in 2010/2011 and has so far added Sweet Orange’s victory in the M-B HK Classic Mile in the current campaign among a HK career total of 299 (as of 16 April).

Prebble, Brett

Aged 34, Prebble is a former champion apprentice and twice champion jockey in Melbourne. His HK breakthrough came aboard Precision in the HKG1 Champions & Chater Cup in 2003. In 2005 he added the G1 Australia Stakes on Cape Of Good Hope, and took the Champions Mile and Yasuda Kinen on Bullish Luck in 2006. In 2009/10 he scored a G1/HKG1 treble aboard Sacred Kingdom in the CXHK Sprint, Kent & Curwen Centenary Sprint Cup, and Chairman's Sprint Prize. His battle with Douglas Whyte for the 2009/10 Jockeys' Championship was an epic to savour with Prebble eventually going down by 100-99. Prebble's consolation for defeat is his six winning rides at Happy Valley on 20 June, a Hong Kong record. By the end of the 2010/11 season he had amassed 78 victories to ensure second place in the standings for the fifth straight year. His 34 wins this campaign (as of 16 April) bring his accumulated Hong Kong total to 559 wins. He rode a pair of HKG1 victories with Sacred Kingdom in the Kent & Curwen Centenary Sprint Cup, and Lucky Nine in the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Classic Mile last season and the latter gave him a major triumph in December when winning the G1 CXHK Sprint and added the HKG1 Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup in March.

Rispoli, Umberto

Age 23, Italian jockey Umberto Rispoli has achieved a significant amount of success in his relatively brief riding career. Having commenced his apprenticeship in 2005 and graduating to the senior ranks in 2010, Rispoli was crowned Champion Italian Jockey in 2009 and 2010. In claiming the 2009 title he rode 245 winners to smash Gianfranco Dettori’s long-held Italian record of 229. In all, Rispoli has recorded in excess of 1,100 career wins. His two Group 1 victories in Italy were achieved on Aoife Alainn in the 2010 Premio Lydia Tesio and Estejo in the 2011 Premio Presidente della Repubblica. He also captured the 2011 G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen on Kinshasa No Kiseki and the G2 Nikkei Shinshun Hai on his AP QEII Cup mount, Rulership during a spell in Japan. He broke his Hong Kong duck on 9 April, riding a double on Diamond Knight and Life Of Beauty.

Shea, Kevin

Aged 46, Shea began riding work at age 13 and is one of South Africa’s leading riders. He has enjoyed international prominence over the past decade through his association with Mike de Kock, particularly in Dubai. He won the 2002 G1 Durban July in his homeland and the 2003 G1 Dubai Duty Free on the champion South African mare Ipi Tombe. His impressive Dubai haul also includes the 2008 G1 Dubai Sheema Classic on Sun Classique and five victories in the Al Fahidi Fort, including this year atop his AP QEII Cup hope Viscount Nelson. He partnered Archipenko to success in that same race before his triumph in the 2008 AP QEII Cup. Further Hong Kong success came in the 2008 G1 CXHK Cup with Eagle Mountain, while Lizard’s Desire landed the G1 Singapore Airlines International Cup in 2010.

Whyte, Douglas

Aged 40, born in Durban, South Africa, he has been champion jockey in Hong Kong for the last 11 seasons, a record he is almost certain to extend this season having ridden 84 winners (as of 16 April), more than double the tally of his nearest pursuer. He holds the record for career wins in Hong Kong: 1,400 up to 15 April, 2012. He is the only jockey ever to reach 1,000 winners in Hong Kong, and his monstrous tally of 114 winners in 2005/06 broke his own record for a season. He believes however that 2009/10, in which with 100 winners he just repelled the challenge of Brett Prebble, was his greatest campaign. Has won several HKG1 events on luminaries such as Ambitious Dragon, Indigenous, Packing Winner, Best Of The Best and Armada. In 2010 he filled what had been virtually the only remaining space in an illustrious Hong Kong CV by winning the MBHK Derby on Super Satin, a feat he repeated this year aboard Fay Fay. Last season he rode 96 winners and added a third AP QEII Cup on Ambitious Dragon to go with the previous wins atop London News (1998) and Oriental Express (1999).

Cruz, Derek Collection

Aged 56, Derek Cruz was licensed as a trainer in 1991. He enjoyed a first G1 victory in December 2005 when Natural Blitz shocked most observers by snatching the Cathay Pacific HK Sprint. Then 2009/10 was something of a breakthrough season as he first prepared Good Ba Ba to win a record third successive Cathay Pacific HK Mile, then won the inaugural running of the G3 Al Quoz Sprint at the Dubai World Cup meeting at Meydan with Joy And Fun. He enjoyed a successful 2010/11 season in which he sent out 24 winners, including Cerise Cherry's success in the HKG3 Premier Bowl. This season he has added a further 21 wins, including Joy And Fun’s HKG1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize success, for an overall total of 453 (as of 16 April).

Cruz, Tony California Memory, Pure Champion

Aged 55, six times Hong Kong's champion jockey, Cruz rode 946 winners. He first landed the HK trainer's title in 1999/2000 and regained it in 2005, when he set a new record for a season's winners (91) and earnings (HK$113m). His most famous horses have been Silent Witness, the dual Cathay Pacific HK Sprint and nine-time G1 winner, Bullish Luck, five-time G1 winner and winner of the G1 Yasuda Kinen in Japan, and 2011 G1 CXHK Cup hero California Memory. Lucky Owners' double in the HK Mile and Mercedes-Benz HK Derby and Helene Mascot's Derby victory also stand out. He won 72 races in 2010/11 including two HKG1s and the G1 CXHK Mile with Beauty Flash, for a career total of over 800, and looked set for another trainers’ title until John Moore unleashed a late flurry of winners. He is second in this season’s title race, behind run away leader John Size, with 38 winners as of 16 April.

De Kock, Mike Viscount Nelson

Aged 48, de Kock won his first G1 just four months into his training career in 1989. He has won every major event in South Africa at least once and trained the South African Triple Crown winner, Horse Chestnut. He has enjoyed considerable success at the Dubai World Cup Carnival winning the Dubai Sheema Classic, the Godolphin Mile, the UAE Derby five times and the Dubai Duty Free twice. He is also prolific in Hong Kong, winning the AP QEII Cup with Irridescence (2006) and Archipenko (2008) and the 2008 CXHK Cup with Eagle Mountain. In January he saddled crack mare Igugu to win the J & B Met in his homeland, adding to her 2011 win in the Durban July.

Ferraris, David Sweet Orange

Aged 48, son of champion South African trainer Ormonde Ferraris began training in 1995. He won the South African trainers' title on four occasions, netting 25 G1 victories among well over 1,000 wins with champions Classic Flag and Celtic Grove his most outstanding performers. Having moved to Hong Kong in 2003/04, Ferraris will always be associated with six-time G1 winner and 2005 APQEII Cup victor Vengeance Of Rain, whose victory in the 2007 Dubai Sheema Classic cracked the top ten of the all-time stakes earners. Vengeance Of Rain went on to become the greatest prize money winner in Hong Kong history until he was surpassed in 2010 by his old rival Viva Pataca. Last season his star was Champion Griffin Bear Hero while this year’s flagbearer has been the HKG1 Mercedes-Benz HK Classic Mile victor Sweet Orange, who was a fast-finishing place-getter in both the HKG1 Mercedes-Benz HK Classic Cup and HKG1 Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby. In 2010/11, he trained 19 winners and this year’s tally stands at 9 (as of 16 April), giving him a Hong Kong total of 260 wins.

Fownes, Caspar Thumbs Up

Aged 44, Fownes assisted his trainer father Lawrie for several seasons before taking over the mantle in 2003/04. Eclipsed his father's best season stats in his rookie year with 44 winners, and in 2006/07 won his first trainers' premiership. His most famous victory that season was with The Duke in the G1 Cathay Pacific HK Mile. He has a good strike-rate at Happy Valley where on 20 June 2010 he sent out six winners in a day, equalling the record in Hong Kong's professional racing era. Won his second premiership in 2008/09 and was second in the table in 2009/10, the season in which Super Satin gave him a first Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby and Green Birdie won the G1 KrisFlyer International Sprint in Singapore. He trained 56 winners in the 2010/11 season, his most notable victory being Lucky Nine’s HKG1 Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Classic Mile. That horse provided one of his biggest win to date in December’s G1 CXHK Sprint. He has added a further 31 this season for a current Hong Kong career total of 468 (as of 16 April).

Ho, Peter Mr Medici

Aged 51, Ho graduated from the ranks of assistant trainer to take out his own licence in 1997/98. His biggest success arrived with Packing Winner in the HKG1 Citi Champions & Chater Cup in 2008. His best horse since has been Mr Medici who earned the Champion Stayer title for the 2009/10 season with victory in the 2010 HKG1 Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup. Mr Medici went on to run with credit in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. Packing Winner was a game third in the G1 2010 CXHK Cup won by Snow Fairy. Ho finished last season with a total of 26 winners and he has already surpassed that with 28 winners (as of 16 April) this season to bring his overall total to 385.

Laffon-Parias, Carlos Chinchon

Aged 48 and born in Spain where he was five times champion amateur rider, he moved to Chantilly in 1986 as assistant to Criquette Head and took out his own licence in 1991. His first G1 success came with Labeeb in the 1995 Hollywood Derby, while Spadoun (1998) and Goldamix (1999) took the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud closer to home. A regular fixture towards the top of the French trainers’ list, he landed a first Classic victory with Falco in the 2008 Poule d’Essai des Poulain and further G1 wins include Nadia (2001 Prix Saint-Alary), Keltos (2002 Lockinge Stakes), Laverock (2006 Prix d’Ispahan) and Chinchon (2010 United Nations Stakes). The last named was 4th in the 2009 AP QEII Cup, while Balius was runner-up in the 2008 contest as well as that year’s CXHK Cup.

Moore, John Irian, Zaidan

Aged 62, Moore has been involved in HK racing since the professional era began in 1971. He began training in 1985, before which he held the position of assistant trainer to his late famous father, George. In 2007 he prepared an international G1 double thanks to Viva Pataca in the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup and Able One in the Champions Mile, and in a feat perhaps unprecedented in the sport won the same two races with the same two horses three years later. Moore has been leader in prize-money won for the past six seasons, thanks in part to the now retired Viva Pataca, the leading prize money winner in Hong Kong racing history. He is also the first trainer ever to send out 1,000 winners in Hong Kong. In 2010/2011 he regained the Trainers’ Championship he last held in 1994-5 by winning four of the last six races of the season, finally getting the better of an epic battle with Tony Cruz. He has amassed 36 winners this season, including Able One’s success in December’s CXHK Mile, for an overall total of 1,247 (as of 16 April).

O’Brien, Aidan Treasure Beach

Aged 42, O’Brien has a phenomenal list of big race wins already to his name and is fast approaching 200 G1 winners. A champion amateur jump jockey in Ireland, he was assistant trainer to Jim Bolger before taking out a trainer’s licence in 1993 – he has been Ireland’s champion trainer 15 times. He enjoyed remarkable success with jumpers before teaming up with John Magnier’s Coolmore operation at the legendary Ballydoyle training base in 1996 and quickly switching exclusively to flat racing. He has won 45 British and Irish Classic races and has 35 Royal Ascot victories to his name. O’Brien has trained a host of champions including super sire Galileo, High Chaparral, Giant’s Causeway, Rock Of Gibraltar and Cape Blanco. With six Breeders’ Cup wins already on the board, he broke new ground this year with his first Dubai winner, Daddy Long Legs in the G2 UAE Derby.

Size, John Fay Fay

Aged 57, John Size was a top trainer in Sydney before his arrival in Hong Kong in 2001 with a reputation for improving and rekindling the spark in his horses. He broke the mould by winning the trainers' premiership in his very first season, adding five more titles in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010; he has a seemingly unassailable lead in this season’s trainers’ race. He has trained the winners of two Horse of the Year titles, the multiple HKG1 scorers Electronic Unicorn and Grand Delight. He also won the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup in 2004 with longshot River Dancer, the same year he secured two Triple Crown legs via Super Kid. He won the 2009 Champions Mile with Sight Winner. In 2009/10 he trained Brave Kid to equal the then record of six wins in a season and Entrapment who broke that record with seven victories in just five months. In 2010/2011 he finished third in the Trainers’ Championship adding another 64 winners. This season, which has yielded a first Hong Kong Derby with Fay Fay, he has scored a further 59 winners to bring his Hong Kong career total to 684 as of 16 April.

Sumii, Katsuhiko Rulership

Aged 48, Katsuhiko Sumii is the most successful international campaigner in the Japanese training ranks, having won no less than 45 stakes races, including at least 21 at G1 level. He trained the great Vodka to her seven G1 victories, and outside Japan has won the CXHK Mile with Hat Trick (2005) the American Oaks with Cesario (2005) and a one-two finish in the 2006 Melbourne Cup with Delta Blues and Pop Rock. Last year, he trained 60 winners and was crowned as JRA’s champion trainer for the first time, with his season highlight being the victory of his runner Victoire Pisa in the world’s richest race, the Dubai World Cup. He has saddled 20 winners so far in 2012, and is currently leading the JRA’s trainer standings (as of 8 April). These include a G2 victory with his APQEII Cup runner Rulership in the AJC Cup in January.
