Difference between DSLR & SLRPictures are an integral part in keeping memories. Before the days of digital photography, there was film. Although film has started to disappear from the general public view in the last few years, it’s where we begin our discussion.SLR or Single Lens Reflex camera are a class of cameras that allowed for much better photographs due to an innovative solution to an old problem. Most cameras have two light paths from the target, one leading to the lens itself while the other to the viewfinder. This leads to the final photo being slightly different from what you saw on the viewfinder. SLR cameras fixed this by using a certain mechanism that lets you see through the lens. After you push the button to take the picture, the mechanism then moves to let the light hit the film behind it.Most SLR’s are used in professional photography, where the need for utmost quality is very high. It would not be surprising that most of the advanced features also appear on SLRs and not on the common camera.At the early stages of photography, the LCD viewfinder grew in popularity. Since the LCD viewfinder usually takes its image on the image sensor, it should already be considered as an SLR; but it isn’t. SLRs have begun to become a class of high end cameras with more advanced features, like manual controls, interchangeable lenses, among others. It was no longer just about the path of light.

DSLR or the Digital version of SLR is basically an SLR that has been converted from saving the image in film to saving an image in a memory card. It still shares a lot of the advanced features of the SLR along with a few more improvements that makes it a lot more superior.The nature of memory cards and the high capacities that are available today means that a professional photographer would not need to change the storage medium as often. The use of very high quality sensors coupled with the capability to instantly review the image you took also gives modern day photographers an undeniable edge.Despite being a few folds more expensive compared to their counterparts, the SLR and the DSLR were an indispensable tool in professional photography. Even hobbyists who have the money can enjoy and enhance their talents on photography. As most technologies evolve, so does the technology in photography. The DSLR is just the next evolutionary step from the SLR.

Commercial & Fine- Art PhotographersWe hear a lot about fine art photography and amateur photography, but how do these areas of interest differ from commercial photography. Although some may say that there are vast differences between both worlds of photography, I beg to differ. I believe that there is a thin line between both types of photography, I think that the line is a lot thinner than many people realize.

The word commercial explains it all, commercial photography consists of a client who gives instructions and sets the brief for a given project. These briefs are sometimes of vastly diverse nature and photographers fulfill the needs of the clients by providing the photographs they require. Commercial photography could also include photo-shoots for weddings, magazines, promotions, advertising, etc. Although commercial photographers work on briefs to make a living most also practice photography in their spare time, wherein their work is sometimes defined as fine-art.

Ronya Galka – Fine Art PhotographerABOUT RONYA GALKA

Born in Germany but lives in London Galka’s is an Fine art photographer. Galka’s mainly takes photos in the genre of street photography. The beauty of the genre is the fact that you only get a couple or even one shot, no rehearsal no and no-retakes. Galka’s uses the street as her blank canvas and the props are the unpredictable movements of the complete strangers around her. She uses the the depicting ordinary gestures of the people around her as her main interest within her shots. The thing I like about Galka’s work is that fact that she is able to show u the little things in our daily lives that we usually notice.

HOW THIS PHOTOGRAPH INSPIRES ME

This photograph inspires me to take thoughtful photographs. What I mean by this is, to have more meaning behind my photographs. I believe this keeps the audience of the photograph intrigued and thinking about the way the photograph is taken and why.

THE MEANING OF THE PHOTOGRAPH

From looking and analyzing Galka’s photograph (on the right) It makes me feel like she trying to portray the message of the life cycle we will all eventually go through. The fact that all the people in the photograph are walking towards the same destination makes me feel like they are traveling and that they are on a journey. Another aspect that makes me feel this way when looking at the picture is the lines in the picture leaning forward towards an unknown place.

Julian Evil– High Speed Photographer ABOUT JULIAN EVIL

Starting of as a hobby photography soon became Julian Evil’s passion and not long after, his job. Julian specializes in high speed photographs and often known for his spectacular high-speed photographs of water droplets.

WHAT MAKES THIS PHOTOGRAPH SUCCESSFUL?

The most powerful aspect of this photograph for me, is moment of capture. To achieve this, the photographer has to be very precise and requires a significant amount of concentration. Not only has Julian Evil done this but he has also combined the great moment of capture with precise framing and most importantly, fantastic lighting.HOW DOES THIS IMAGE INSPIRE YOU?

This image inspires me to plan out my photo-shoots in depth, to always consider framing and lighting before taking a photograph. Not only does this photograph give me the urge to try high-speed photography but also to experiment with lighting when having photoshoots

WHAT IDEA DO YOU THINK THIS IMAGE IS TRYING TO EXPLORE?

The subject matter of this image is a woman jumping in the air. At first glance this may mean a few things :

joy, freedom, relief.

This is why the photograph leads me to believe that its trying to explore the idea of being set-free let it be an addiction or any other form of conformity.

WHAT MAKES THIS A GOOD PHOTOGRAPH?

In order to create a visually appealing photograph a few things need to be considered; things such as composition, eye path, distractions, gestures of the subject and lighting. In this photograph all the above elements have been considered. The fact that the photograph’s lighting and model gestures is fantastic, it also has good sense of composition and eye path. This allows the user to see what they want to see, either the beautiful sunset and then the model or the opposite.

Charles Hidreth– Portrait, Fashion Photographer

ABOUT CHARLES HIDRETH

Raised and born in Denver, Colorado Charles Hidreth is a freelance photographer specializing in portratuire. I chose to analyze Hidreth’s work because of his fantastic ability to portray a certain emotion within a photograph by combining a set of skills known as composition, communication with model and great use of natural and artificial lighting.

WHAT MAKES THIS PHOTOGRAPH SUCCESSFUL?

The most influential aspect of this photograph for me is the use of natural lighting and overall composition of the photograph. The way that the photograph is taken makes me feel the urge to think about why the girl in the photograph has this expression. Often people sit and reflect on certain aspects of life, maybe old friends, old loved-ones and more. The more I look at this image the more I feel pushed towards the idea this girl in the

photograph has lost an important person in her life. Although some may disagree with me, it cannot be argued that the photograph visually strikes the audience with a group of questions like ‘Why?’, ‘What’ , ‘How?’, ‘ When?’. This is exactly what is great about this photograph; it keeps the viewer intrigued and left wondering.

Compare & ContrastBy comparing the work of Charles Hidreth and Sara Long, many similarities could be seen. Things such as good composition, fantastic use of natural lighting and great editing skills are evident in both of these photographers’ work. Even though both photographers have similarities in the physical action of taking photographs, both photographs (Previous page) convey a different message to me. While studying both Hidreth and Long’s work I have come to notice that Charles Hidreth likes to make the audience think about the meaning of his photograph rather than completely showing it within the photograph. On the other hand, I believe that Sara Long likes to actually express her feelings and emotion through the photograph, rather than giving hints for the meaning of the photograph like Charles Hidreth.

Overall I have come to the decision that both Charles Hidreth and Sara Long are fantastic photographers with great skill and potential of becoming world-known artists.

I would like to learn a lot from both these photographers, including skills such as conveying messages through the images by implying and hinting the audience towards and a certain idea. Artist like Hidreth and Long inspire me to experiment and not only strive to achieve an aesthetically pleasing photographs but photographs that also allow the audience to engage and try to figure out the meaning behind the photo. In order to do this I would need to give hints and indications (facial expressions, body posture, composition, lighting) as to what the photo is trying to convey.

Overall these two artists give me an earnest desire to improve my photography skills and techniques, so that in the near future my photographs will have impact on the audience.

EvaluationOn the whole I am quite please with the final outcomes of my photographs because I have very carefully considered the composition of the photographs and I believe that they are visually striking towards the audience, for which I am pleased. I also carefully considered the lighting in my photographs, this can be seen mainly in the portraiture and the close-up photographs of the water droplets.

My original intention when taking my photographs for this project was to try and explore the use of lighting in my photographs. I tried to focus on taking the photographs in a way that I didn’t have to do much on the computer in regards to lighting and composition. On most the photographs I was able to use a tripod and flashlight to help me to achieve my goal. I believe that overall my photographs are successful because I am confident with my sense of composition when taking the photographs and the lighting techniques I used when having my photo-shoots. The part I struggled most in this project was taking the close-up photos of water droplets. This was because everything had to be timed perfectly in regards to the droplet hitting the surface of the water. After experimenting with these type of photographs for a couple of days I was able to capture photographs with which I am now happy with.

I am not particularly happy with the quality of photographs for my ‘coffee’ photographs. This is because I do not think they are unique enough to stand out within a group of similar photos. I believe this is because some of them lack composition and use of computer enhancement. If I were to do this part of the project again I would focus more on having unique shots from unusual angles and maybe even high speed photographs of beans dropping into a cup full of coffee, with my new knowledge of capturing water droplets.

EvaluationIn whole, I think that my final pieces reflect my level of experimentation which I was constantly doing in my project. I believe that with my final photographs I represented what I was aiming for when planning out this project at the beginning of this project.
