IT’S OUR PLEASURE TO SERVE YOU … word from your executive directorREUBEN’S CORNER

First, we truly apologize for the inconvenience these preventative steps have caused our residents and family members. We understand that staying in one’s apartment for an extended period of time is most difficult, but we instituted these policies for the good and welfare of every resident. Coordinating daily food deliveries, increasing housekeeping hours, scheduling in-apartment activities through our building’s conference line is most difficult, but we are doing our best to reduce the chances of anyone else contracting this virus.

Second, I wanted to clarify again that the illness that our residents are experiencing is a gastrointestinal virus, not the flu or the Coronavirus. Everyone has shown the same symptoms.

Welcome to Shirley Prince. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. Shirley moved into Atrium Village in February. She moved from Reisterstown, Md. where she lived there for seven years. Shirley has three children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Shirley worked as a clerk for Social Security Administration.

Shirley’s passion is her extraordinary gift of sewing and is looking to help residents who need some sewing done here. She has every color of thread and two sewing machines and a little sewing corner in her apartment. She has made wedding gowns, prom gowns and long gowns for all occasions. We welcome her at Atrium Village and hopes she has a wonderful time here.

KEEP ACTIVE with these activities

• Carry on a daily routine as much as possible.

• Stay connected with family and friends by telephone, writing them a letter or email, or by using social media.

• Keep physically active as much as you can. Take advantage of the limited walks when possible, get up and walk around your apartment, and do simple seated stretches.

• Use this time as an opportunity: Read that book you’ve been wanting to get to, work on your favorite crafting project or hobby, take on a puzzle (Try the ones here in the newsletter!), start a journal, or learn something new.

• Unleash your inner artist with coloring pages or take up drawing or sketching.

• Organize something you’ve put off, such as that pile of papers, a drawer or shelf.

• Listen to your favorite music.

• If it’s possible, use your TV’s streaming service to catch up on some classic movies or one of those popular TV shows everyone’s talking about.

• Use your tablet or computer and research some topics you’ve always been interested in, learn some phrases in a foreign language, watch a YouTube tutorial or TED talk, or just laugh at some animal videos!

• Above all, maintain a positive attitude. You have likely coped with difficult situations before, and be reassured that you will cope with this current situation as well.

EVENT RECAP

orioles partyWell, here we go again! We had another grand opening day party at Atrium Village cheering on our Baltimore Orioles playing their rival team the New York Yankees. Will Baltimore Orioles be a contender this year or do you think they will have another lousy season? We start out hoping for a great season and to get in the playoffs. Can you imagine what this town would be like if our Ravens and Orioles would both win the Super Bowl and the World Series in the same year? It would bring so much needed happiness to the city and not to mention the revenue. Maybe it would slow down the crime rate that we need and I believe these teams could play a major role in that if they would win or even be in the playoffs. Oh, it would be so nice.

THIS MONTH’S heart heroHOSPITALITY, EXCELLENCE, APPRECIATION, RESPECT, TEAMWORK

TERESA KITTLEMAN is invaluable to Atrium Village. She has filled in over in Assisted Living and has done an excellent job. She has increased activities, baking, crafts, YouTube concerts, Name That Tune and so forth. She really enjoys the residents and has lots of fun doing programming. She will still be driving as well. We are revamping the program to bring you a better experience as we add new programs every month.

IT TAKES A TEAM: thank you for your patienceUnderstanding what it takes to get rid of the virus at Atrium Village or any other community. Once the gastrointestinal virus hits the community we follow guidelines by the Health Department of Maryland. In Assisted Living, we have to report the number of cases that are more than four. Once we report them, we have to follow their recommendations which is to stop all community activities from entertainment, Bingo, dining together gathering in public places together in order to slow down the spread of the virus. Our team begins its procedure by informing the residents and their families of the virus. Then we disinfect all common areas of the building where residents gather. Dining Rooms, Activity Rooms, Lobby, mailboxes, railings on all floors, every surface you can imagine that residents and staff touch. This takes time and a lot of energy. Our goal is to cut down on the number of people that can get infected with the virus. We understand it is not easy to do this but understand we are following the guidelines to get over the virus as quickly as possible and resume normal activities.

Reuben was able to set up a conference line for all residents to dial into for some on-phone activities.

GARDENING AT

ATRIUM with jake and teamHere we are in spring and we are seeing it in full bloom. Jake and his team of experts are getting ready to begin their planting with the residents in the raised gardens. They are looking for residents who enjoy gardening to assist with the planting. We will be also making tea bags as well from the herbs we will grow. Mint tea was one of my favorites and very popular with the residents. We will enjoy salads from the garden, smoothies from the herbs that grow — so many wonderful programs Jake and his team do through this program. We really want to have beautiful gardens again this year so come on outside and help us out.
