Illinois Wesleyan University enjoys a tradition of excellence in intercollegiate athletics. The Titans annually compete for

conference and national championships as a member of the NCAA Division III

and the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). IWU sponsors 22

varsity sports for men and women. Students also participate in a wide range

of intramural and club sports and recreational activities.

115Academic All-Americans® Since the program began in 1970, 115 Illinois Wesleyan students have been named Academic All-Americans®, a total that is 12th among all participating colleges and universities.

To Prospective Student – Athletes:At Illinois Wesleyan University, we make a dual promise.

First and foremost, you will receive an outstanding education. Second, we will make your varsity experience a big-time event throughout your undergraduate career. As a Titan athlete, you will achieve success in the classroom and on the playing field. In 2012-13, seven Illinois Wesleyan teams were involved in NCAA postseason competition, and IWU sent individuals to NCAA championships in men’s track, women’s swimming and men’s swimming.

Of the 446 Division III schools in the country, the Illinois Wesleyan athletic program finished in the top 10% in the 2012-13 Division III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup final standings, marking the fourth straight year IWU has finished in the top decile nationally.

Recently, senior runner Tara Clemens was named to Capital One Academic All-American® squads for women’s track & field/cross country. Earlier this year, senior Danny Kenny was a first team honoree for men’s soccer.

Our commitment to the student-athlete continues to be supported by all of our coaches. As a Titan, you will not be asked to miss class for practice, and we try to avoid class conflicts when scheduling away-game travel plans. Our coaches are competitive and want to win, but our top priority is your education.

and recreational facilities that are available for all Illinois Wesleyan students. The Shirk Center for Athletics and Recreation, a 135,355 square-foot multi-purpose building, is the cornerstone of these facilities. Furthermore, the University completed a $6  million renovation of its entire outdoor athletic complex in 2000.

Jack Horenberger Field, which opened in 1999, provides stadium-style seating for up to 500. The lighted field features a traditional brick backstop, a press box and a manicured grass infield. Horenberger Field has been the site of five NCAA regional baseball tournaments.

The Softball Field opened in April 2000 and has been the site of five NCAA regional championships. The field features stadium lighting, a press box and dugouts, as well as seating for 200.

Tucci Stadium was built in 1939 and has been upgraded over the years. In 2011 artificial turf was installed and the stadium adopted its current name. The original football field, known as Wilder Field, was first used in 1893, making it the fifth-oldest college football field in the country. In 2000 and 2001 renovations to Tucci Stadium included a re-installation of lights and an upgrade to transform the Robert K. Keck Track into an eight-lane, 400-meter, NCAA/IAAF-sanctioned track and field facility.

Beadles-Morse Tennis Courts comprise seven outdoor tennis courts, four of which are lighted.

Neis Soccer Field opened in 1999 and is home to both the men’s and women’s soccer teams. The lighted facility has bleacher seating for 300 spectators. The field measures 120 yards by 75 yards and features World Cup-style goals.

Fort Natatorium is an eight-lane, 25-yard by six-lane, 25-meter swimming pool equipped with one-meter and three-meter diving boards and seating for 300 spectators.

Shirk Activity Center contains a six-lane, 200-meter indoor track plus full indoor track and field facilities, two baseball/softball batting cages, four multi-purpose courts for tennis, basketball and volleyball, as well as a putting surface for golf. It also houses indoor practice facilities for baseball, softball, lacrosse and soccer. The Shirk Center hosted the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in 2000 and 2005.

Shirk Center Arena features a wood-floored court for basketball, volleyball and other physical education activities. The arena seats 2,500 for athletic events and also hosts concerts and special events. In 2007 and 2008, the Arena was the host site of the NCAA Division III National Volleyball Championships, and it also served as the Final Four site for the 2010 and 2011 NCAA Division III National Women’s Basketball Championships.

Shirk Fitness Center in the Shirk Center includes three racquetball courts, as well as a weight/exercise room with cardiovascular machines, exercise equipment and free weights. A five-year renovation of the fitness center is nearly complete; recent improvements include new flooring, installation of a reusable water bottle station, and several new cardiovascular machines and circuit training weight equipment.

BaseballThe Titans finished with a 33-14 record and appeared in the NCAA Division III tournament for the fourth straight year and 11th time overall. IWU was the 2010 NCAA Division III baseball national champion. Junior pitcher Jeff Johnson was chosen to the third team of the 2013 D3baseball.com NCAA Division III All-American team. Senior catcher A.J. Nathan was named to the 2013 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Division III “Gold Glove Team.” Head coach Dennis Martel, recently inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame, is closing in on 700 career wins as baseball coach at Illinois Wesleyan.

BasketballThe men’s basketball team advanced to the “Sweet Sixteen” of the NCAA Division III tournament. The Titans finished the year at 23-6 and were 13-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Junior Andrew Ziemnik was named to the second team of the All-Midwest Region squads chosen by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He also was named to the second team of the 2013 D3hoops.com All-Midwest Region Squad, as well as first team all-CCIW. Titan teams have compiled a 205-35 home record since the Shirk Center opened in 1995. Ron Rose ’88 begins his eighth year as head coach of the team.

Cross CountryIn the past several years, the Titans have had a different individual finish toward the top in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. In 2012, six different IWU runners finished as the low finisher in the team’s ten meets. Freshman Kyle Nottingham earned “Most Valuable Performer” team honors after leading the way in three of the meets. Illinois Wesleyan welcomes back ninth-year head coach Greg Huffaker, who is no stranger to the CCIW. A 1999 graduate of North Central, Huffaker comes to IWU directly from Elmhurst, where he had been the head men’s cross country and track and field coach for three years.

FootballThe 2012 Illinois Wesleyan football team started the season 6-0 before key injuries and conference losses derailed its playoff aspirations. This summer, the Titans posted a 33-0 exhibition win over the Finland National Team in Helsinki. This is IWU’s fifth win in overseas trips. Previous stops were to Hamburg, Germany (1996); Bergamo, Italy (2001); Paris (2005); and Vienna, Austria (2009). In three of those four seasons following the trip, IWU either shared or won the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin title outright. In 26 seasons as head coach, Norm Eash has built the Titans into one of the region’s top NCAA Division III programs.

GolfThe Illinois Wesleyan men’s golf team finished ninth in the NCAA Division III championships, played at the Sandestin (Fla.) Golf and Beach Resort. The team captured the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championships for the 10th time since 2001 and the 15th time overall. Senior Stefan Johnson and sophomore Kenny Wienckowski were named to the second and third teams, respectively, of the PING All-America squads for Division III, announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Titan head coach Jim Ott, who in the spring begins his 14th year at the helm, is a multiple CCIW and Central Region “Coach of the Year.”

LacrosseIn 2012, Illinois Wesleyan hired Zach Iannucci as the program’s first head coach. Iannucci previously served as an assistant coach at Oberlin College (Ohio) and as the defensive coordinator at Hendrix College (Ark.). The Titans will begin competing in intercollegiate men’s lacrosse in the spring of 2014 as an independent, but will begin Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MLC) play in the spring of 2015, giving the conference its fifth new member in the last year. The MLC began play in the spring of 2010 and will be composed of 11 NCAA Division III colleges and universities in the coming year.

SoccerIn 2012, the IWU men’s soccer team finished with a 4-3-0 record in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and an 11-6-0 record overall. For the third straight season, junior defender Declan Geraghty was named to the first team of the all-CCIW soccer squads while seniors Danny Kenny and Kyle Gorgol earned second team honors. Kenny also was elected to the first team of the Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer squads, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Ryan Lakin, a three-time “Coach of the Year” in the CCIW, enters his ninth year as the head coach.

SwimmingThe 2012-13 men’s team finished in fifth place at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin meet, where junior Marcus Duval placed first in the 400 individual medley and third in the 200 butterfly. He competed in the 200 butterfly and both the 200 and 400 individual medley at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships in Shenandoah, Texas. Duval was chosen as the “Most Valuable Performer” for the team. Head coach Teresa Fish joined the IWU coaching staff in 1995 and promptly led the men’s swimming team to its first-ever CCIW championship a year later.

TennisThe 2012 squad finished with an overall dual match record of 7-12. The netters finished fifth in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament. Junior Brian Sorich, first team all-CCIW selection, was picked as the “Most Valuable Player” for the team. He had a 13-10 overall singles mark, including a 10-7 record at No. 1 singles. Led by eighth-year head coach Jason Van Heuklon, the team hosts its matches on seven outdoor courts (four of which are lighted), and have the ability to practice indoors at the Shirk Center.

Track & FieldThe IWU men’s team finished in fourth place in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin indoor meet, to go along with its fifth-place finish in the conference outdoor meet. Junior Aaron Smith was named the “Most Valuable Performer” for the 2012 team. Smith competed in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in the 800-meter run, and he qualified for the NCAA indoor meet and was 12th in the preliminaries. Freshman Danny Krob was voted “Best Newcomer,” and seniors Jonathan Moos and Philip Johnson each earned “Hardest Worker” honors. Chris Schumacher begins his 15th year as head coach.

WOMEN’SVARSITY ATHLETICS

BasketballThe Illinois Wesleyan women’s basketball team finished with an overall record of 18-8 and was 11-3 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. The Titans were the NCAA Division III national champions in 2012. Senior Melissa Gardner and junior Katy Seibring were named to the first team of the CCIW all-league squads while junior Colleen McMahon was selected to the second team. Gardner also was selected to the third team of the D3hoops.com Women’s All-Central Region Squad. Entering her 16th season at the school, head coach Mia Smith is the all-time victories leader for women’s basketball at IWU, having recently earned her 300th career win.

Cross CountryThe Illinois Wesleyan women’s cross country team, making the school’s first national appearance, finished 24th in the 2012 NCAA Division III cross country championships. Prior to competing in the national meet, the team earned the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship title at the league championships for the first time in school history. Three Illinois Wesleyan women runners earned 2012 Division III All-Academic Cross Country status, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Ninth-year head coach Greg Huffaker is looking for strong contributions from returning letter winners, as well as from incoming runners, for the 2013 cross country campaign.

GolfThe Illinois Wesleyan women’s golf team finished tied for ninth in the 2013 NCAA Division III national golf championships. IWU was making its ninth straight and 11th overall NCAA appearance. The Titans finished third in 2011, the best ever in an NCAA tourney. The team also successfully defended their College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin title to capture their 11th consecutive league championship. Coach Kathy Niepagen, the Division III Coach of the Year in 2000, has been women’s golf coach at Illinois Wesleyan since 1997.

LacrosseIllinois Wesleyan will begin an intercollegiate women’s lacrosse team in the spring of 2015, joining the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference, which was founded in 2010 and competed in its inaugural season in the spring of 2011. The conference is currently composed of 11 NCAA Division III colleges and universities located throughout the Midwest. IWU hired Lindsey Rosecrans as the program’s first head coach. She spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach for Siena, where she helped Saints teams that qualified for their conference tournament both seasons.

SoccerThe 2012 women’s soccer team concluded its season with a 9-9 overall mark and a 5-2 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin record. Senior forward Emily Hinchman was named to the second team of the NCAA Division III all-Central region squads for women’s soccer, as chosen by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. A first team all-CCIW selection for the fourth straight season, she finished this year with seven goals and a team-high nine assists. David Barrett, who enters his 13th year as head coach, is looking to build on the successes achieved by recent squads — the team has qualified for the national tournament four of the last five years.

SoftballThe 2013 Titans finished the season with a 32-11 overall record and an 11-3 conference record. The team earned a spot in the Division III national tournament, marking IWU’s 12th NCAA tournament appearance. Senior softball standouts Emma Clark and Keri Leach were chosen to the second team of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association 2013 Division III All-American squads. Both players were earlier named to the all-Great Lakes Region team and were first team all-CCIW. Kat McCreery, a 2004 IWU graduate and former Titan softball player, was named as the new coach in July 2013.

SwimmingThe 2012-13 Titan women’s swim team finished third in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin meet. Senior Katie McHugh qualified for the championship finals of her event and earned third place in school-record time in the 200 butterfly at the NCAA Division III Swimming Championships. She also placed 16th in the national meet in the 500 freestyle. Freshman Kirsten Slaughter earned an all-American status as honorable mention after finishing 16th in the nation in the 50 freestyle. Teresa Fish is entering her 18th year as head coach and was named the CCIW “Women’s Coach of the Year.”

TennisThe Illinois Wesleyan team finished in fourth place at the 2012 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin women’s tennis championship. Junior Lauren Drawbridge earned third in the No. 3 singles spot and junior Svenja Schroeder also took third in the No. 5 singles. Senior Helen Alex took fourth in the No. 2 singles position, while senior Alissa Goetz and freshman Nicole Nelson also earned fourth place in the No. 4 and No. 6 single spots, respectively. The Titan netters competed in dual matches in Orlando during spring break. Head coach Ric Zamudio begins his third year at the helm.

Track & FieldThe Illinois Wesleyan women’s track & field team finished tied for 22nd place in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Senior Tara Clemens finished second in the 800 meter finals, just milliseconds shy of breaking her own IWU school record. Clemens, the winner of the national indoor 800 meter run at the NCAA meet, was elected to the second team of the Capital One Academic All-American® squads for women’s track & field/cross country. Chris Schumacher, a two-time Division III “Coach of the Year,” begins his 17th  season as head coach of his nationally competitive program.

VolleyballSenior middle hitter Alex Hill was chosen as the “Most Valuable Player” for the 2012 Illinois Wesleyan volleyball team. Hill, who was also the team’s “MVP” as a sophomore, was a first team College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin selection. She led the team with 357 kills, 154 blocks and a .285 hitting percentage. Junior setter Erin Wachtel and sophomore hitter Morgan Howard earned honorable mention on the CCIW all-league squads. The Titans finished the year with an overall record of 18-15. A former all-conference Division I volleyball standout, Coach Kim Nelson-Brown enters her 18th year as head coach at Illinois Wesleyan.

Illinois Wesleyan offers a coeducational intramural sports program in which all members of the campus community are encouraged to participate. Students, faculty and staff compete in 12 different athletic events. Competition includes badminton, basketball, f lag football, f loor hockey, racquetball, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball and wallyball. In addition, the University’s club sports program includes floor hockey, racquetball, ultimate frisbee, volleyball, badminton, cheerleading and dance.

The community of Bloomington-Normal offers additional opportunities for athletic and recreational activities. The Pepsi Ice Center, located adjacent to the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in downtown Bloomington, offers ice time for hockey and skating year-round. Located minutes away from the University is Upper Limits Rock Gym and Pro Shop, which is among the largest climbing gyms in North America. The facility features more than 20,000 square feet of climbing surface, a 110-foot outdoor wall, and even ice climbing on an artificial frozen waterfall during the winter months. Upper Limits, rated as the best indoor rock climbing facility in the world by the Discovery Channel International, offers opportunities for climbers of all experience levels. Another popular attraction is the Constitution Trail, which features more than 24 miles of paved trail through both forested and commercial areas of the Twin Cities. The trail attracts runners, cyclists and in-line skaters and is accessible just a few blocks from the Shirk Athletic Center.

Furthermore, IWU Student Wellness offers a variety of fitness-oriented classes throughout the school year. These classes are designed to promote cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, and muscular flexibility, as well as to encourage healthy lifestyle choices among students. Other opportunities through the Wellness Program include workshops, massage therapy, health screenings and special campus events.
