The University of Illinois Athlete of the Yearwas first given in 1940 to Bill Hapac, who playedbasketball and baseball. The award was givenannually until it was discontinued in 1973. Therewere no awards given until 1982, when the BigTen began a Conference Athlete of the Year, inwhich each school nominated a male and femaleathlete. Since 1982, the University of Illinois hasrecognized a Male and Female Athlete of theYear.

In 1993, the awards were renamed the DikeEddleman Athlete of the Year awards in honor ofthe 11-time UI letterman and former Olympian. The awards are announced each June and pre-sented at the annual Varsity “I” banquet in thefall.

This season the awards were given to men’sgymnast Justin Spring and Leisha Alcia ofwomen’s soccer. Spring was the 2004 NCAA highbar champion during his sophomore campaign, while Alcia was a first team All-American goal-keeper for the Illini soccer team. Spring becomesthe fifth men’s gymnast to earn the prestigiousaward and the first since David Zeddies in 1989.Alcia is the first ever soccer player claim theDivision of Intercollegiate Athletics’ (DIA) topprize.

Spring was one of two NCAA champions forIllinois this year. He won the high bar title at theNCAA Championships in dramatic fashion atAssembly Hall, scoring a 9.775 on the final rou-tine of the competition to take the crown infront of the home fans. That performance, alongwith his fifth-place showing on the parallel barsat NCAAs, earned him the third and fourth All-America accolades of his young career. He alsoled the top-ranked Illini to a third-place finish inthe team race. At the Big Ten Championships,Spring won the floor exercise and placed secondin the all-around with a school-record score of55.600 while leading Illinois to its first team titlein 15 years. During the regular season, the Burke,Va., native won 19 of 40 event titles, a rate whichis nearly unprecedented in gymnastics, and puthis name atop the UI record books on five differ-ent events – the floor exercise, vault, parallel bars, high bar and all-around. He was named NCAAGymnast of the Week on three occasions and wasa five-time Big Ten Gymnast of the Week.

In addition, Spring, who is widely recognizedas one of the country’s most exciting up-and-coming gymnasts, has begun to make a splash onthe national and international scenes. He recently

placed fourth on high bar at the 2004 U.S.Gymnastics Championships, and, last August, hecompeted for Team USA at the World UniversityGames in Daegu, South Korea, where headvanced to the finals on the floor exercise.

Alcia was the driving force for JanetRayfield’s Fighting Illini soccer squad that won aBig Ten Tournament Championship and cruisedto a second place regular season conference fin-ish, both firsts for the program. Known for herability to make difficult, acrobatic saves, Alciaplayed all but 17 minutes for the Illini in 2003,posting 12 solo shutouts and becoming the UIcareer leader in shutouts (16), saves (256) andgoals against average (GAA) (1.14). The juniorwas named a first team All-American by threedifferent organizations (NSCAA, Soccerbuzz andCSTV), was a first team All-Big Ten selectionand was named Big Ten Player of the Week onthree separate occasions.

A Mississauga, Ontario, native, Alcia rankedeighth in the nation and led the Big Ten in GAA(0.54) while leading an Illini defense that wasone of the best in the nation. The unit shatteredmultiple records, including fewest goals allowed(12) and shutouts in a season (13). The 13shutouts were the second most by a team in Big
