Asthma Education PlanReassessment

After pt/family video completion: Reassess to ensure understanding of teaching:

“Teach Back”- Ask parent a scenario based question. Example: You will be working late today and Jane is going

to Grandma’s house. Please tell me what you would tell Grandma to do if Jane has an asthma attack.

“Ask me three” - Verify level of understanding by focusing on the following teaching points. (*Avoid asking parent ‘do you understand’?)

What does the parent need to know about asthma? What does the parent need to do to care for the child

with asthma? Why is this information important?

Page 12: Asthma Education Plan

Customer Service Hint

When assessing level of understanding, it’s important to help the parent feel comfortable. Consider using the following approach:

“I want to make sure that I have done a good job teaching you what to do when you go home. Will you tell me how you will provide instructions to the babysitter about this asthma medicine? How will you explain how to use this inhaler?

Remember…The Get Well Network is an adjunct for patient education. It does not take the place of reassessment.
