ACMP 2016 Takeaways | Blue Beyond Consulting

#Happiness and the Bottom LineFor companies, happy employees mean better bottom-line results. Employees who score low in life satisfaction, a rigorously tested and widely accepted metric, stay home an average of 1.25 more days a month, a 2008 study by Gallup Healthways shows. That translates into a decrease in productivity of 15 days a year.

In a study of service departments, Jennifer George and Kenneth Bettenhausen found that employees who score high in life satisfaction are significantly more likely to receive high ratings from customers. In addition, researchers at Gallup found that retail stores that scored higher on employee life satisfaction generated $21 more in earnings per square foot of space than the other stores, adding $32 million in additional profits for the whole chain.

The Performance ConnectionIn a sweeping meta-analysis of 225 academic studies, Sonja Lyubomirsky, Laura King, and Ed Diener found that happy employees have, on average, 31% higher productivity; their sales are 37% higher; their creativity is three times higher.

My research shows that employees who score the highest on providing social support are 40% more likely to receive a promotion in the following year, report significantly higher job satisfaction, and feel 10 times more engaged by their jobs than people who score in the lowest quartile.

Strategies to enable transformational change and sustain adoptionAwareness and understanding:Mid-managers will not lead the change misconception. Change comes in all sizes and budget levels technology implementation to organizational restructuring to culture transformation.More costly to business to omit investment in change management at onset of the project vs time and money spent in firefighting and course corrections. There is NO finish line to change. Change isnt flip of a switch. Its long and continuing road of transformation.

#In change management, we know that peoples ability and willingness to adopt and accept change is a critical success factor for a successful transformation. Sometimes the best change management practices are not enough to help people through a change. In such cases, developing personal internal strength and resiliency contributes to a more resilient corporate environment. Personal resiliency can appear in many forms: Coping well with stress and adversity. Exhibiting positive behaviors when faced with challenging situations, such as communicating ones concerns respectfully, asking for help, seeking to understand, helping others, etc. Actively participating rather than withdrawing or being toxic. Ability to bounce back quickly after a setback. Self-awareness of ones own reactions and choices. Remaining calm and professional. Avoiding or reducing depression.
