While at Akron U., Ray was the #2 singles players as a freshmanand the #1 singles player for his last three years, being named MVPduring each of those three years. Ray began teaching tennis at the University Club of Akron in 1962 andcontinued through 1964. In 1966 through 1971 he was the head tennis
pro at Congress Lake Country Club in Hartville, Ohio. While there, in 1956 he played anexhibition match again the late Don Budge. Ray was also the head teaching pro at TowpathRacquet Club when it opened in 1968. He also spent 28 years teaching tennis for the Park andRecreation programs of Cuyahoga Falls, Tallmadge and Stow starting in 1982. Ray also workedwith the Akron District Tennis Association from 1968 to 1972 helping with seeds and draws for thejunior division. In 1969, Ray began his teaching (Health and Physical Education) and coaching careers inCuyahoga Falls City School District. Over the years, Ray coached football, girls and boysbasketball, softball and volunteered as a coach for the boys' tennis team in the early 1970s. Hiswife, Laurel, was a head coach for a combined 29 seasons at CFHS and Ray assisted her in bothsports, girls basketball and girls softball, for several years resulting in two trips to the Final Four ingirls' softball and a State Championship in Softball in 1980. In basketball, the teams went to thedistrict finals 5 out of 7 years with three trips to the regional tournaments. Ray started the girls' tennis program at Cuyahoga Falls High School in 1982. He has a currentrecord of 536-208 with 15 league championships, 10 second place titles, and coach of the year 15times. In addition to the girls, Ray took over the boys' program from 1990 to 2015 with a record of312-139, collecting 5 league championships, 12 second place titles and coach of the year 5 times. His programs have sent 28 players to Districts and 7 girls to State with over 20 formers playersplaying in colleges from Division I to Division 3. Ray was also selected as "Young Educator of theYear" in 1977 in the Cuyahoga Falls School District. He spent 32 years teaching Health andPhysical Education before retiring in 2001. Ray and his wife, Laurel of 45 years, live in Munroe Falls, Ohio. They have three children. Chad,a 2003 grad from Miami U and wife Catherine live in New Albany with grandsons Aj and Michael. Keri, a 2005 grad from Miami U and husband Brent live in German Village, Columbus. She wasa recipient the OTCA scholarship award in 2001. Ryan, a 2009 grad from Kent State and wifeJessica are traveling physical therapists currently in West Branch, Michigan.
Upon graduation from college, I was contacted by the Ashtabula Area City Schools andoffered a job teaching Health and P.E. I was interviewed by the Athletic Director, Mr. Balland the basketball coach Mr. Gephart. This interview included an option to coach either golfor tennis. Knowing the Athletic Director had been coaching golf forever, I took on the tennisspot – never having played the game. In fact, the school didn’t have a tennis program yet. So, I became the first boys tennis coach in 1964 and still hold that position. How time flies. In 2002 or 2003 I helped start up a girls tennis program and took over head coach in 2005 or2006. I still love and have a wonderful group of girls. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Coach Clark Hewitt as head of the Junior High programand my go to guy when necessary. Between the two of us, we have started a winter eight-week session for high school, junior high school and middle school students interested inperfecting their skills or just to see if it is something they would like to pursue. We continuethis program on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the summer. So here I am 56 years coaching tennis behind me and still loving it. As a headline in the StarBeacon Sports section on 6/18/15 reads “Mr. Longevity.” On a final note, I’d like to talk about the fundamentals of our programs. The cornerstonesrest upon good sportsmanship and common courtesies. Each player responds appropriatelywith a please, thank you or an encouraging remark to a teammate. Even though we haven’thad the greatest win/loss records, I think those attributes are the most important aspect of mycoaching these wonderful players. Hopefully they can become better players and individualsas they graduate and go through our program. And that they will carry this philosophy withthem in whatever they chose to do. And last but certainly not least, I would like to send out props to my good friend and mostinfluential mentor, Arnie Bradshaw.
Robert WaltersAll the way through junior high, senior high and college my totalfocus was on basketball. At Baldwin Wallace College I became very proficient in the sport, attaining the recognition of leading scorer. This led to aninvitation to try out for the N. Y. Nicks in the 68th draft.Unfortunately, my 6’1” height was a factor in my declining theoffer.
