HPV Team goes to Maryborough

Last Wednesday, our HPV team led by Mr Friebe and Mr Wells led the

convoy of vehicles heading north to Maryborough for the annual RACV

Energy Breakthrough Challenge. Reports indicate that it was another

fantastic event with children performing to the best of their abilities and in

some cases, beyond previously seen skill levels. Not only did the

children have to drive the HPVs but also do audio-visual presentations

and have their vehicles undergo intense scrutineering by officials. Mr

Friebe has included a report elsewhere in the newsletter and at

Assembly tomorrow the HPV Program will feature prominently. A HUGE

thank you to Mr Friebe and Mr Wells for the many months of training and

tutoring provided to the team. I know the children who took part will have

wonderful memories of their time up north. This event simply couldn’t

take place without the support of many, many parents who undertook

many jobs to support the students and staff. Thank you to you all for your

efforts and support of our children. Mr Friebe was especially proud of the

students – their performances were great but they represented

themselves and their school with pride and distinction. Well done to

everyone involved!

Twilight Working Bee

Thank you to the small but enthusiastic band of helpers who joined

Principal Nathan and myself for our Twilight Working Bee on Friday

13th November. While we completed some jobs from our list of tasks,

there are still a number of gardening and painting jobs that we will

complete early in Term 1 of 2016. Thank you to the members of the

Twite, Roberts, Smith, Beachley, Villinger, Brady and Bowcher

families for your efforts.

(Continued from page 1) Monster Truck visits KPS

At Assembly on Monday, our school had a visit from a monster truck

and its owner Troy, who spoke about the vehicle and the big Monster

Truck event coming up this Saturday at the Korumburra

Showgrounds. The children were impressed by the vehicle and I’m

sure the Showgrounds will reverbarate to the sound of some

monster trucks with lots of ‘wows’ and ‘yeahs’ coming from the crowd

watching this new event to Korumburra.

Parents & Friends Christmas Tree Order & Christmas Raffle

Don’t forget that if you want to order a Christmas Tree for Christmas,

orders need to be in to the School Office no later than 1st December.

The annual Wheelbarrow Christmas Raffle is a great fundraiser for

our P & F team. It is a simply wonderful prize to win at Christmas.

We ask all families to make a donation of an item to put in the

wheelbarrow. This year, there will again be other prizes beyond our

Wheelbarrow chocked full of goodies as 1st prize. Prizes for the

wheelbarrow can be left in the barrow which is positioned at the KPS

Office.

Junior Aquatic Program

This Friday our Junior Aquatic Program sees all the Year Prep

students and Mrs McPherson’s Year 1s begin their sessions. Our

Year 1 and 2 students had a great time and really developed their

skills over the 3 weeks and we look forward to those beginning

sessions tomorrow also enjoying their time in the water. Thank you

to our many parent helpers who assist the Junior Department staff

and Phys. Ed. teacher Shelley Snooks.

Burra Flyer

Nearly everyone in Korumburra and district will have read a copy of

the Burra Flyer, including the regular report written by our School

Council Secretary Anita Roberts. Thanks Anita for your contribution

to the Burra Flyer informing the Korumburra community of events at

our school.

Year 6 Yearbook

Our Year 6 students have completed compiling the many pages for

their annual Yearbook and there have been some big efforts by a

number of students to get it finalised, especially the Layout team of

Elisha Nicholas, Imogen Donohue-Corr and Josh de Bono and

Photos Team of Belle Grabham-Andrews and Jorja Whyte. They

couldn’t have completed the yearbook without the help of ES staff

member Jenni Swan who has been a great support for the students

to get it to the publishers. We are all looking forward to seeing the

hardcopy when it arrives during the last week of school.

Reading, Reading, Reading

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is over for 2015 and this year we

had over 100 students complete ‘the Challenge’. Mrs Cripps again co

-ordinated this program through the Library and we acknowledge and

thank her for her efforts to support the students with this activity.

Successful students will be recognised at Monday’s Assembly.

While writing of reading, our Before School Reading Program has

been another huge success in 2015. We have many children who

turn up each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 8:30

to do some extra reading practice with Brenda Jones, Sharon Jones,

Jenni Swan, Kathy McRae and Helen Cripps. Can you believe that

this year, there have been over 1800 individual visits to Reading

Club – yes that’s 1800 – an amazing number! Congratulations to all

those involved in supporting our students to improve their reading.

Year 4 Bike Ed. Program

Our very excited Year 4 students have now begun their practical bike

riding skills as part of the annual Bike Ed. Program which has been

co-ordinated and led by Haley Anderson and Megan Berry (CRT

replacing Ben Hallas). The children rotate through a range of skill

development training activities each day and the progress shown by

some students has been amazing to see. This is a fantastic program

and teaches important skills which hopefully become a lifelong hobby

for these children. Thank you to Haley, Megan, ESO Sharon Jones

and the many parents involved in teaching the children these skills.

Portfolio Presentations

Next week, the bookings for our Student-Led Portfolio Presentations

open so make sure you go on-line and follow the instructions to book

a time to take part in your child’s Portfolio Presentation. If you need

assistance with booking a time, just contact Betty at the Office.

Staffing

As we near the end of the year, this week is Mrs Ellyn Zizic’s last

week for the year as she begins 3 weeks of Long Service Leave next

Monday, 30th November. We would all like to wish Mrs Zizic a

wonderful holiday and look forward to seeing her back at KPS in

2016. During her absence, EZ:2 will be taught by one of our regular

relief teachers Ms Carol Hanratty.

Spot Mr Gray’s Spelling Mistake

Did you spot the mistake in my last report? This time, our regular

super-spotting student – Sophie McKenzie, spotted my mistake

again. My deliberate mistake was the word ‘raise’ which was spelt as

‘rasie’. Good luck spotting my very easy mistake in this report. As

usual, there will be a prize for those students who can identify the

error!

KORUMBURRA PRIMARY SCHOOL

WRAP UP OF THE EVENT

On Wednesday 18th November with much anticipation students, parents and staff from Korumburra Primary School headed off to north-western Victoria to the town of Maryborough to compete in this year’s RACV Energy Breakthrough Challenge. This year marked the 25th anniversary of this amazing

event being up and running. Once again Maryborough lived up to all expectations.

This year was Korumburra Primary School’s 4th crack at the event.

Two Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) teams named Burra Burn (66) and Burra Blitz (67) were entered to compete in the HPV Primary School Endurance event. The event involved a play/presentation and display boards the children developed detailing their training, their community, their vehicle and environmental issues. It also includes a 2 hour time trial and then 14 hours of endurance riding over 2 days for teams of ten riders. Ninety-two HPV Primary teams from around Victoria competed in the event. Prior to competing all vehicles and safety gear were

checked to make sure they complied with stringent safety specifications.

THE WRAP UP IN DETAIL

After the Thursday night 2 hour time trial Burra Burn was placed 23rd on the grid out of 92 HPV’s which was a fantastic effort. Burra Blitz was

placed 83rd.

Over the next 2 days 14 hours of riding was completed by both teams – 8 hours on the Friday then 6 hours on the Saturday. To their credit

both teams worked amazingly well together to complete the race.

PROVISIONAL RESULTS

BURRA BURN – An amazing result finishing 36th out of 72 HPVs in the HPV A2 (larger schools) division. The team completed 279 laps of the

1.1km Holden circuit and did a rippa display/presentation earning 21.3 points out of a possible 25 points. A result to be proud of troops!!

BURRA BLITZ – A stellar effort to complete 252 laps of the Holden circuit as a team and sticking it out to the very end. Fantastic stuff team!!

PARENT SUPPORT AND EFFORT

Even though our students completed the hard yards throughout the year, many parents have assisted our teams make it to and compete at Maryborough once

again this year. Your support and sacrifice has been greatly appreciated.

Middle Department Report Monster Trucks

Following the visit by ‘Tassie Devil’ to our school Assembly on Monday, some Year 3 students have been writing about Monster Trucks and

designing their own vehicles as a prelude to the Monster Truck show on Saturday night at the Korumburra Showgrounds. The writing has

been approached with enthusiasm and there are some interesting ideas for future Monster Truck inventions.

Year 4 Bike-Ed

The Year 4 students have started their intensive Bike-Ed program in preparation for their Bike Hike in December. This will also better

prepare them for safe cycling on the roads and an understanding of maintenance and performance of their bikes. Thanks to all of the parents

who have been assisting with supervising groups of children with obstacle courses, road sign recognition and group riding.

Year 6

The end of the year is fast approaching with the Year 6 team busily preparing for Graduation which i9s set for Wednesday 9th December.

There has been a great deal of effort put into Silhouettes and learning our Farewell Song. I would like to thank our team of songsters who

worked diligently on modifying the lyrics of a popular song to make it our own. Tahlya Gugich, Ellie Stewart, Jade Butler, Sione Ahokava, Matt

O’Neill, Grace Matser, Ari Clarke and Millie Enbom - well done on a great job!

Parents are reminded that Graduation starts at 7:00pm sharp and that all students are required to report to the Senior Building by 6:30.

Please make sure that they are dressed appropriately for the event. Boys are asked to be in a collared shirt and girls with sensible heels and

age appropriate clothing. Make up is allowed but once again please ensure that it is age appropriate.

Parents are asked to bring along something to share as supper on the night and a notice will be coming home next week with more

information to follow. This will need to be dropped off at the Canteen prior to the beginning of the evening.

Space and seating is limited for the night so parents are reminded that there is a limit of 4 guests per student.

Thanks to Tania Findlay for stepping up and co-ordinating the decorations of the Gymnasium. Also we need to thank those who have put

their hand up to help Tania. I am sure that the gym will be stunning for the evening’s events.

V8 Super Cars

On Friday the Senior Department went to see the Time Trials at the Phillip Island Race Circuit. A fantastic day was enjoyed by all. As we

wandered around the track we got to see not only the time trials of many different types of cars including Ford, Holden, Nissan, Mercedes-

Benz E63 AMG and Volvo as well as the V8 Super Cars battle it out for race position but many children had a tour of the pits and got to see

the workings behind the scene of the “Racing Industry”. Although it was a little wet at times, it did not dampen the children’s enthusiasm for

the day. A number of children got to see Craig Lowndes and have their photo taken with him.

Year 5

The Year 5’s have had a busy few weeks exploring their new Inquiry topic ‘Economics’. The students have enjoyed looking at Wants vs

Needs and Consumer vs Producers. It’s been interesting to see how many students thought their PS3’s were needs rather than wants.

Over the past few weeks, the students have done a fantastic job of stepping up as leaders during Action Stations and Peer Mediation

duty. We have been extremely proud of their efforts!

Junior Aquatic Education Program

The Year One and Two classes finished their Aquatic Education Program down at the heated pool last week with plenty of splashing and

fun! Thank-you once again to all of the parents who volunteered their time to help.

This Friday we see JClP, JCaP and KMP/1 begin their three weeks of classes in the pool. A reminder to parents about the times:

10.00 – 11.00am - KMP/1 11.00 – 12.00pm - JClP 12.30 – 1.30pm - JCaP

Please remember to pack a towel, bathers and sometimes spare underpants can be helpful. I look forward to seeing the excited students

tomorrow.

Sports Uniforms

Could all students who have attended sporting events throughout this year please check their cupboards and the bottom of school bags for

any jackets or shirts that may have been forgotten about. Notes will be going out soon to those who I still have recorded as having pieces of

clothing. It’s that time of year when sporting groups are finishing up for the year and many students at KPS are involved in finals or events to

showcase their talent. Good luck to all those involved!!

Junior Department News Well the day has finally arrived!!!! The Preps have been waiting and waiting and waiting to go swimming and tomorrow we get our chance!

Please make sure that you remember their swimming things and keep them all together in a named bag.

Some classes have been learning about Narratives and have just had a go at writing their first made up story. Here are some examples of

their efforts.

Once upon a time on the moon there were two aliens called Timer and Lomar.

Just after tea there came a huge, massive, big rocket ship and it landed on the moon. The two aliens got very, very scared.

Luckily their friends helped scare them away! Jayden Douglas

Once upon a time in the woods there were two kids called Alison and Chris.

Alison said to Chris, “Why don’t we go outside?” But they forgot to shut the door. When they got back Alison’s jewelry box was gone! “Alison!” shouted Chris. “Your jewelry box is gone!” Alison was frightened! Chris said, “Why don’t we lock the door and look for the men who stole it?” They looked and looked and looked and then they saw someone with Alison’s jewelry box! They went and got it back then Alison

put her jewelry box on a high shelf! Zenna Tanaka-Morrison

One night some robbers robbed a bank and stole lots of money!

All of a sudden a noisy alarm went off then the robbers ran out of the bank. Just then a police car stopped and they ran and got them to put

them in jai Wil Reynolds

Once upon a time there were two penguins called Simon and Scott who lived at the snow.

Scott and Simon were sliding down the icebergs but Scott bumped Simon’s head! Scott said, “Sorry, I’m sorry, please forgive me!” “I will forgive you”, said Simon. They made snowmen and they threw snowballs at each other and then they had a swim, buuuut … sharks

surrounded Scott and Simon!

But there was a big gap so they swam through the big gap very fast so they could get to dry land and be be safe! Evan Belvedere
