Asset integrity Management

(AIM) in the oil and gas industry

is a complex process which

encompasses all the phases of an

asset lifecycle from design to

decommissioning and all these

stages must focus on integrity.

Asset Integrity can be defined as

the ability of an asset to perform

its required function effectively

whilst safeguarding life and the

environment .

Asset Integrity Management (AIM) is the preservation of asset integrity at an

anticipated level.

AIM seeks to maintain the asset in a fit-for-service condition while extending

its remaining life in the most reliable, safe and cost effective manner.

+ RISK-BASED INSPECTION (RBI) 4

RBI is a risk assessment and

management process that is focused

on loss of containment of pressurized

equipment in processing facilities, due

to material deterioration. These risks

are managed primarily through

equipment inspection.

LifeTech’s RBI methodology can be

used to manage the overall risk of a

plant by focusing inspection efforts on

the process equipment with the

highest risk.

Our RBI methodology provides the

basis for making informed decisions

on inspection frequency, the extent of

inspection, and the most suitable type

of NDE. In most processing plants, a

large percent of the total unit risk will

be concentrated in a relatively small

percent of the equipment items.

These potential high-risk components

may require greater attention, perhaps

through a revised inspection plan. The

cost of the increased inspection effort

may be offset by reducing excessive

inspection efforts in the areas

identified as having lower risk.

LifeTech is able to implement RBI

projects to:

• Reduce Risks

• Minimize Shutdowns

• Maximize Shutdown Intervals

• Reduce/Prevent Leaks

• Reduce Costs including Insurance

Costs

• Maximize Equipment Availability

• Focus Resources and Budget on High

Risk Items.

+ RBLXTM SOFTWARE

RBLXTM is a fully quantitative RBI software suit based on the API, DNV,

NORSOK and ASME standards which identifies applicable damage

mechanisms, calculates corrosion rates, determine damage

susceptibilities, estimate current and future risks and recommends

optimum inspection plans.

RBLXTM

covers the following equipment:

Pressure Vessels;

Subsea and Land Based Pipelines;

Storage Tanks;

Heat Exchangers;

Pipework; and,

Pressure Relief Devices (PRDs).

The following modules will be added to RBLXTM in near future:

Topside Structures;

Subsea Jacket;

Flexible Risers and Flow lines; and,

Rotary Equipment.

+ RBLXTM CAPABILITIES

Risk-Based Inspection (RBI)

RBLXTM will be used in implementing the RBI

projects.

Corrosion Risk Assessment

RBLXTM is able to identify the applicable

damage mechanisms and quantify several

corrosion and degradation mechanisms.

Life Extension

Using RBLXTM the future risks can be

predicted and a documented Life Extension

process will be implemented.

Remaining Life Assessment

RBLXTM can be used in assessing the

remaining life of the asset.

+ LIFE EXTENSION The oil and gas operators around the world experience that their assets reach

the original design life while there is still a need to operate the systems for

more years. As assets age, the operators have several new challenges to

consider when required to operate beyond the design life such as:

Changes in integrity, e.g. time dependent degradation;

Mechanisms such as corrosion and fatigue or random; and,

Mechanical damages (e.g. third party damages).

LifeTech has developed a detailed methodology based on API, DNV, NORSOK

and ISO standards to complete a full life extension project cycle.

Corrosion Management System (CMS) is involved in a range of activities including corrosion prevention, corrosion mitigation, corrosion monitoring and inspection.

Corrosion management is not just about sending NDT technicians on the site and painting pipework. Effective management of corrosion control and monitoring activities are key elements of Asset Integrity Management.

Corrosion management is a cross-discipline activity (Technical & Non-Technical).

LifeTech Engineering has developed a detailed corrosion management strategy based on HSE UK Corrosion Management document-OTO 2001/044-including the following main activities:

Corrosion Risk Assessment

Corrosion Control Programme

Implementation of the Corrosion Control Program (Mitigation, Monitoring, Inspection, Corrosion Awareness, Repairs, Roles and Responsibilities, Data Management and Material Degradation Reporting)

Performance Assessment

Design/New Projects/Equipment Changes

Experience and Lessons Learned

+ CORROSION RISK ASSESSMENT (CRA)

Corrosion is the main reason for conducting technical inspections.

Corrosion Risk Assessment (CRA), which may be embedded within the

Risk Based Inspection is the process of identifying and quantifying the

possible risks due to corrosion.

The purpose of the corrosion risk assessment is to identify and prioritise

the effect of various material degradation mechanisms on the asset.

Corrosion risk assessment will also act as a tool to identify any weaknesses

in the existing corrosion control programme and prompt the risk reducing

actions.

The output of a Corrosion Risk Assessment will feed into the Risk Based

Inspection and Corrosion Management systems

The Corrosion Management system will be used to mitigate or control

corrosion by:

Monitoring corrosion control performance;

Improving corrosion control;

Identifying and resolving corrosion management issues, and;

Maintaining a flow of information between parties.

+ FITNESS FOR SERVICE (FFS) ASSESSMENT

Fitness-for-service (FFS) assessment is a multi-disciplinary approach to

determine whether equipment Is fit for continued service.

The equipment or system in question may contains flaws or other damage, or

may be subjected to more severe operating conditions than anticipated by the

original design. The outcome of a fitness-for-service assessment is a decision

to run as is, repair, re-rate, alter, or retire the equipment.

A remaining life analysis may also be performed as part of the assessment,

which can be used to set future inspection intervals and to budget for capital

expenditures when existing equipment is to be retired. A typical FFS

assessment may involve several engineering disciplines, and it requires

collecting data from a number of sources.

An experienced LifeTech Engineer takes the lead role in performing the

assessment, he will rely on other LifeTech Engineers to provide crucial data

and expertise.

+ RELIABILITY CENTERED MAINTENANCE (RCM)

RCM is a common sense approach for achieving reliability. It is the best

known proven method for developing a preventive maintenance (PM)

program for any type of plant or facility.

“RCM is defined as a set of tasks generated on the basis of a systematic

evaluation that are used to develop or optimize a maintenance program.

RCM incorporates decision logic to ascertain the safety and operational

consequences of failures and identifies the mechanisms responsible for

those failures”.

The Three Phases of an RCM Based Preventive Maintenance Program:

Phase 1: identify equipment important to plant safety, generation (or production), and

asset protection

Phase 2: specify the requisite PM tasks for the equipment identified in phase 1.

Phase 3: properly execute the tasks specified in phase 2.

LifeTech uses a Risk Based approach for RCM Methodology which

includes the following steps:

Screening

Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA)

Risk evaluation

Strategy development
