potential to help Australian Youth achieve better health outcomes?• Finally, the role that schools can play in improving the

health status of Australian Youth.

The Major Health Issues that Impact Australian Youth.

Some of the major health issues that impact on Australian Youth today are

• Obesity• Depression• Cyber Bullying

These Major Health Issues have an impact on Australian Youth.Each of the three major health issues that this presentation will focus on will discuss the patterns, causes and effects of the chosen issues.

ObesityA physical health issue that results from excess body fat (Scully, 2014).Patterns:• 17% of children between 5-17 years are overweight (Magee,

Caputi & Iverson, 2013).• A futher 8% of children are considered obese (Magee, Caputi, &

DepressionDepression is a mental illness where a person exhibits prolonged feelings of sadness, and even a loss of interest (Ruskin, Proctor & Neeves, 2013).Patterns• Women experience a higher rate of depression and anxiety over

men.• Of the total youth population 1% - 3% of young people will have

been affected by a major depression episode.• 15% - 40% of young people will report having symptoms of a

depressed mood disorder.• Approximately 24% of young people by age 18 will have suffered

bullied offline.• 64% of Years 6-12 students have been

cyber-bullied.Causes• Popular kids trying to stay popular.• Less socially successful students try to fit

What are the physical benefits of physical activity and sport?According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 2015, the following are the physical benefits of physical activity:• Improved muscular and cardiorespiratory fitness• Improved bone and functional health• Reduced risk of hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, breast

and colon cancer and depression• Reduced risk of falls and fractures• Fundamental to energy balance and weight control(WHO, 2015, a.).

How does physical activity and sport have the potential to help Australian Youth achieve better health outcomes?

What are the social and mental benefits of physical activity?Some of the social and mental benefits of physical activity for improving Australian Youth health outcomes include:• Development and opportunity to build confidence, social interaction and

integration• Reject alcohol, drugs and cigarettes• Controlling anxiety and depression• Happy and active students• (WHO, 2015, b.)
