Welcome to the Accelerate Sports Performance Internship Program. We’re excited to have you work with us! The purpose of this manual is to familiarize you with the policies and procedures of ASP. While thorough, this handbook is better thought of as a jumping off point to your time at ASP. Questions not answered by this manual are encouraged and should be directed to ASP Management.

The Accelerate Sports Performance Education Program requires a series of clinical experiences consisting of competencies and proficiencies through research, lab and facility settings. Skill evaluation will include practice in labs and demonstration of competencies in a coaching setting. A continually evolving competence is required to be involved in real-world coaching through the course of the internship.

Selection as an intern means you have been given the opportunity to practice your profession while under the guidance of a certified working professional. You are an extension of ASP; please inform your decision-making accordingly.

BenefitsASP stresses the importance of an in-depth knowledge of anatomy, kinesiology, and performance physiology to properly structure programs and adapt as all exercise prescription requires.

Breaks among interns are staggered. At least one coaching intern must be on the floor at all times.

Coaching interns are encouraged, but not required, to train at ASP. Staff lifting times are detailed in logistics section of this manual.

Interns will be taken through mid-term evaluations and exit interviews with full-time staff.

There will be weekly in-service presentations. The subject of these in-services will be related to the field of sports medicine and performance, as well as strength and conditioning. Presentations of material will be expected within a timely manner, and may vary in formality.

Personal liability insurance is required for all interns (eg. Reasonable rates can be found at HPSO, NSCA, or NATA).

DEPENDABILITY: Dependability includes punctuality, following directions, completion of tasks as assigned, enforcing the rules at ASP, asking for help if needed, and showing initiative.

DEDICATION: You must be dedicated to your personal success in the performance facility and the growth and success of the company and its values.

SINCERITY, CARING, and INTEGRITY: We work in an industry governed by many rules and requirements. Professionalism and talent are just the cost of entry to the field. It’s your hard-work, care, and integrity that make ASP, ASP.

Finally, FRIENDLINESS and a SENSE OF HUMOR are a necessity. As an entire staff, we all put in long hours, and attitude directly affects a positive working environment.

Guidelines While Coaching7

Accelerate Sports Performance provides individualized programming with coaching in a one-on-one and semi-private training environment. The distinctiveness and encompassing quality of the services provided by ASP are what separate ASP from other facilities. ASP interns/coaches are expected to uphold the company vision and values of excellence.

The following is the progression of the client training model:•One-on-one assessment with Coach Cooney or any of the head performance coaches

•1-3 day wait period for program design

•Program is presented to client on paper or via phone application

•Client is coached one-on-one by staff member for the initial 1-2 weeks of programming phase/block until the client is comfortable with the progression.

•Once the client is independently functioning with their programming, there is no further requirement to schedule times to meet with staff members one-on-one.

•Clients proceed to move through their program independently while continually being coached by circulating staff members to provide direct attention as needed.

•One week before the completion of each Phase the client notifies Coach Cooney so the next training phase/block may be prescribed.

•If a client is implicated for manual therapy, they will meet with Coach Cooney before their training session for treatment as planned by Coach Cooney.

•Program monitoring is done in real time, daily, throughout the entire training program, via phone application, data collection and entry, and conversation.

•The client will repeat the above process with each subsequent training phase/block until completion of off-season or in-season program. General population clients will also go through the same process with no specific end point unless otherwise determined.
