Welcome
musings of a bride to be
W hat’s the point of weddings anyway? It’s a question that has reared
it’s scary head lately as the stresses of my wedding-planning have
gotten particularly fraught.
Tradition aside, why all the bells and whistles? As one of
our Real Brides this issue put it “What’s important is being married not
getting married.”
The answer for me, I’ve realised, is that it’s an event to commemorate the union of two people
who have decided that out of all the people in the whole wide world, they’ve chosen one
another and want to spend the rest of their lives loving eachother. That’s special.
Why not have a party to celebrate it? And to this party we invite those people that mean the
most to us. People we love, people who love us and people who find joy and pride in
seeing us happy. It’s more than a dinner party, or a milestone birthday party, this is all the
people we cherish most together in one room, celebrating our love and
wishing us their best for a perfect future. How wonderful?
So, I say bring on the bells and the whistles! With our nearest and dearest travelling across
the world to indulge us in a single moment in history that is all about the
two of us, let’s make it a day to remember. From the most stunning venue to welcome them, a
delicious feast to treat our taste buds, flowers and decor to pretty it all, entertainment for
all to have fun in our honour, photographers to immortalise it all forever, and of
course spectacular fashion and makeup that make you feel like a movie star and make him
fall for you all over again. Superficial and frivolous? Maybe. Trivial? Never, because it all
stands for something so much more. I can’t wait for my wedding because I can’t wait for the people I value most
to come together to give me their blessing on the day I
marry the man I adore with all my heart and we
embark upon the rest of our lives together.
PS By the time I write to you next, the big day will have happened, and I can tell you all about it!

Shivani & Kishan tied the knot in the magnificent Natural History Museum. Photographs by Shashi D
How did the two of you meet? I was visiting Zambia for my summer holidays in 2011 and Kishan had moved there earlier that year. We knew of each other already as our parents have been friends for a very long time, but the two of us had never crossed paths. We finally met and got chatting at a local house party. Casual coffee dates turned into clandestine dinner dates and from there the dinner dates turned into an exclusive relationship.
How did he propose? Kishan decided to whisk me away for a weekend escape. I was totally left in the dark with where we were going. We landed in Milan, then on travelled to the small town of Ravello, on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. It was against the perfect backdrop where the hues of blue sea and sky met, in a theatrical pose, he knelt and asked for my hand in marriage.
Describe your outfits: I wore a lengha for both weddings. Both were Sabyasachi inspired creations complemented by a pair of Stuart Weitzman and Jimmy Choo shoes, and resplendent jewellery.
What was your theme? We went for pastel colours like peaches, light corals and ivories with a pop of magenta. The exterior of the museum was lit up in a deep purple and the iconic dinosaur skeleton was lit up in red to match the bridesmaid’s and groomsmen’s colours.
How was the décor? The mandap was pure white with a curtain of fairy lights as the backdrop and fresh orange, yellow and white roses framed the entire mandap. It looked spectacular! For the centrepieces we had tall martini vases with a ring of orange roses at the mouth of the vase, topped with purple,

Get thinLess than 15 minutes exercise a day and a kitchen full of fatty treats, nutritionist Zana Morris explains why this is the perfect
diet for any bride-to-beWhat is the concept behind eating fat to get thin? It’s firstly important for me
to say that this concept only
works if carbs are eliminated,
otherwise it is more “eat fat
get fat”. Carbohydrates break
down into sugars and that’s
where most of our energy comes
from. The beauty of taking the
carbohydrates out and putting
fat in, is your body switches
from burning sugars as a fuel to
burning fat as a fuel.
When did you realise that fat wasn’t the devil?I had a lot of friends who were
massively into weight training,
and attached to that comes all
the nutrition plans. At the time
I tried out a high fat – low carb
diet. The first thing that blew me
away was the change in shape.
How does it combat cravings?Fat stabilises the insulin level,
which kicks off hunger, so if you
eat fat you stabilise the system and
the cravings stop.
How long does it take to see results? It takes about 5-6 days to see a
change. For the first 3-4 we focus
on blitzing the carbs and sugar
out of the system, which can
cause withdrawal symptoms. But
after that is a brilliant efficient
fuel - energy is much better when
it comes from fat.
What fats should we be eating?Avocado has great fats so does
olive oil and coconut oil. I am not
against saturated fats but don’t
live off them. Nature has looked
after things so the more natural
the fat, the better.
Why are short, high-intensity sessions better for losing weight? After 45 minutes the research is
showing that we are burning into
more muscle than we are capable
of recovering from, which means
you are losing the very tissue that
was burning the fat for you in the
first place. On top of that you also
lose the toned muscle that kept
you in shape.
You can do just one minute and
get results as long as it’s intensive,
and I think anything from 6-10
minutes is ideal. High-intensity
really means that if you can do
more once it’s done, it wasn’t high
enough.
Tell us about your training method with clients In our gym we work two
different body parts and then do
three routines a week. We only
encourage clients to do three
times a week so they’re working
each body part once a week to
exhaustion and then they get time
to recover.
Is this a long term plan? I hate the word diet, I think the
low-fat eating was a fad because
we didn’t evolve that way, at no
point in our history did we not
have fat. So I’d like to think we
are going back into more of a
common sense approach. If we
view it as trying to get the natural
fat balance back, well then that’s a
way of life.
What one fitness rule do you think people need to take on board? Really listen to your own body,
If you feel awful on a healthy
diet then something’s not right. I
believe the best thing is to be as
close to nature as you can get.

ZANA MORRIS’ NEW DIET RULESOne: Remember, there’s no need to have carbs every day with every meal. Get the carbs down to two to three days a week.
Two: Don’t ban anything out of your diet because the minute you do, you’ll want it. But do keep the carbs down and get some fat and protein in with every meal.
Three: We don’t need to eat 3-5 times a day. A lot of us are conditioned as well to think that we are hungry at particular times but the truth is if you get that lit tle bit of fat and protein in with every meal you really won’t need to eat so of ten.
NATURE HAS LOOKED AFTER THINGS, SO THE
