Site Conditions

• Undocumented fill, ranging from approximately 5 to 20 feet thick

• Upper 20 feet of soils - loose to dense sands, including the undocumented fill

• 20 to 35 feet bgs - loose to dense sands and low-plastic silts; loose sands and low-plastic silts are potentially liquefiable

• 35 to 85 feet bgs - soft to very stiff clays, some gravel layers

• Below 85 feet bgs - very dense sands and gravels

• Groundwater - 24 to 85 feet bgs; HHGW = 20 feet bgs

Page 17: ASCE OC Geo-Institute Luncheon - ARTIC: Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center September 2016

Key Geotechnical Issues

• Undocumented fill - 5 to 20 feet thick

• Relatively high seismic setting

• Seismic induced settlement • Range of 1 to 7 inches • Average of 3 inches

• Liquefaction induced lateral spreading - 3 inches

• Groundwater flooding from the Santa Ana River

Page 18: ASCE OC Geo-Institute Luncheon - ARTIC: Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center September 2016

Foundation Alternatives • Shallow spread foundation without ground

improvement • Mat foundation without ground improvement • Cast-in-drilled-hole piles (CIDH)

• Deep driven piles

• Shallow spread foundation with ground improvement

• Mat foundation with ground improvement

Page 19: ASCE OC Geo-Institute Luncheon - ARTIC: Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center September 2016

Ground Improvement Alternatives

• Removal and replacement • Jet Grouting • Vibro Methods (stone columns) • Deep soil mixing (DSM) • Deep dynamic compaction (DDC)

Page 20: ASCE OC Geo-Institute Luncheon - ARTIC: Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center September 2016

Selected Foundation/Ground Improvement • Terminal Building - Mat foundation with DDC

ground improvement

• Concourse Bridge - 3.5- and 10-foot- diameter CIDH

• Service Yard Building - Shallow footing with MSE composite raft

• Douglass Bridge – 2-foot-diameter CIDH

Page 21: ASCE OC Geo-Institute Luncheon - ARTIC: Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center September 2016

Selected Foundation/Ground Improvement

• Main Terminal Building • Mat foundation with DDC ground improvement

• Static settlement improvement for undocumented fill and loose/soft natural soils

• Seismic settlement reduction

• Concourse Bridge • 3- to 10-foot diameter CIDH piles • Small differential settlement • Resists lateral spreading
