What is Sporting Schools?

Sporting Schools is an Australian Government and Australian Sports Commission (ASC) initiative

which will fund sporting activities before, during and after-school in more than 5,700 schools and

engage with 850,000 children hoping to encourage them to do more sport-based activities. Sporting

Schools will start in Term 3 2015 and is an evolution of the Active After-School Communities (AASC)

program. Like the AASC, Sporting Schools is a new addition and different to any programs that you

may have already been delivering to school groups.

A key feature of Sporting School is the use of National Sporting Organisation (NSO) endorsed

sporting programs. LaunchPad is the Gymnastics Australia (GA) junior participation program which

aims to increase sport participation, develop children’s fundamental movement skills and all-round

physical and brain development, and will be delivered under Sporting Schools.

We anticipate LaunchPad will provide a greater connection for Australian children with gymnastics

and one that we hope will provide a lifelong love of our sport. To ensure your club or provider

business is prepared to take full opportunity of Sporting Schools it is encouraged that they are

LaunchPad accredited.

Why do we Need Sporting Schools?

The ASC’s research has shown that Australia is facing two significant issues in their

Play.Sport.Australia. participation game plan:

Keeping sports relevant and viable; and

Keeping Australians active and healthy.

Play.Sport.Australia. paints a compelling picture of how Australia has changed in the last decade and

why sports need to adapt; otherwise it risks becoming irrelevant. The challenge for sport now is how

to respond to these changes without eroding what makes sport unique and appealing.

With one in four young people currently overweight or obese, the ASC will focus its efforts to get

more Australians playing sport more regularly, build an understanding of the value of sport and

boost lifelong participation in sport. Participating in sport develops skills and good habits that

underpin lifelong physical fitness, and this is why Sporting Schools was developed.

Why be Involved in Sporting Schools?

Schools that successfully attain funding through Sporting Schools and select gymnastics as a sport

will be looking to connect with their local clubs, providers and coaches who are endorsed by GA.

This is a great opportunity to:

Expose gymnastics to more kids in more schools;

Link with local schools and community;

Deliver programs before, during or after school;

Access grants funding to support delivery, e.g. funding to transport school groups to club;

Increase membership base;

Further employment for coaches;

Market club gymnastics sessions;

Market other club activities, e.g. Birthday Parties, School Holiday programs etc.; and

Club promotion.

What Has Changed From the AASC?

Many clubs, providers and coaches will be familiar with the AASC program. The below diagram

highlights the differences between the AASC program and Sporting Schools Program (SSP), and the

expectations moving into the new initiative.

How do I get Involved?

1. Clubs, providers and coaches that are endorsed by GA will only be allowed to deliver under

Sporting Schools.

a. To get endorsed, you must meet the minimum standards set by the ASC and GA; and

2. Register on the Sporting Schools Website www.sportingschools.gov.au. To find out how to

register, see the ‘How Do I Register?’ section below in this guide on page 6.

Quality Assurance - Minimum Standards

All clubs, providers and coaches that will deliver under Sporting Schools will need to be endorsed

and meet the minimum requirements of Gymnastics Australia and the ASC, which are as follows:

Clubs & Providers

Will need to be affiliated with Gymnastics NSW and GA; and

Will need to be LaunchPad accredited (or working towards LaunchPad accreditation).

Coaches

Will need to hold a current Intermediate coaching accreditation (any gymsport*);

• Beginner coaches can be utilised under the supervision of the Intermediate Coach

Will need to hold a current Technical Membership with GA; and

Will have to hold a current Working with Children Check.

Insurance

Clubs and providers will need Public Liability Insurance and Professional Indemnity Insurance

(minimum $10 million each) cover for all coaches represented.

o All clubs/providers that are currently affiliated with Gymnastics Australia and have taken

the insurance provided through Gymnastics Australia will have appropriate levels of

Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance.

o For those who have taken their own insurance will have to make sure the minimum

requirements are met.

Please note, in order to deliver as part of Sporting Schools, you must upload the following evidence

to the Sporting Schools website:

A current NSW Working with Children Check; and

Sport specific coaching accreditation.

*Cheerleading Accreditations – coaches who do not have any Intermediate Coaching accreditations

with Gymnastics Australia but hold USASF coaching credentials must convert this accreditation into a

Gymnastics Australia Cheerleading Accreditation in order to deliver Cheerleading as part of Sporting

Schools. In order to do this, coaches must:

Contact the Gymnastics NSW education team on [email protected];

Request and complete the Gymnastics NSW Exemption Form;

Log into the Learning Management System (LMS) and:

o Complete the Intermediate pre-course workbook, which will be sent to the

candidate via email;

o Complete the ‘Intermediate Online Generic Course’; and

o Upload all your Cheerleading coaching credentials.

Please note, this is to be confirmed and is subject to change. If cheerleading is applicable to you and

you wish to find out more information please contact the Gymnastics NSW education team on

[email protected],au.

How Do I Register?

Clubs and providers must register first (refer to the Club and Provider’s Guide for more information).

Afterwards, ALL their coaches who will deliver programs will have to register their details on

the Sporting Schools website. After registering, those details will be placed on the Sporting

Schools online web portal, which is where schools will go when they are looking to contact coaches

to deliver gymnastics.

Registration is a complicated process and has several steps. If you haven’t registered yet, please do

so as soon as possible. Alternatively, for those who have registered, please make sure you have

completed the entire process as it is quite complicated. Below is a step by step guide to the entire

registration process for coaches.

Step 1

Go to the Sporting Schools Website (www.sportingschools.gov.au).

Step 2

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on ‘REGISTER AS A COACH’.

Step 3

Complete the fields below. Your email address will be used as your username which you will use to

log in.

Step 4

The Registration Centre will immediately send a confirmation email which must be opened. After

opening the email, click on the link sent to confirm your email address, set your password and

activate your account. If you do not see it in your inbox, please check your junk mail folder.

Step 5

Now go back to the Sporting Schools website and click on ‘LOGIN’ on the top of the webpage.

Next, input in the details that you just set during registration and click ‘Sign In’.

Step 6

Scroll down and select ‘REGISTER … as a Coach’.

Step 7

You might see a white screen, if so just scroll up.

Read and complete all the fields in this section. Click on the green arrows on the right hand side to

go to the next step.

Step 8

Input your name and address/addresses.

Step 9

Input your date of birth, gender and the ‘Professional Coach’ option.

It is essential that you have insurance or else you will not be able to deliver under Sporting Schools.

Please check with your club/provider to see if you are covered.

Step 10

You will need a current Working With Children Check (WWCC) and must upload a copy of your

clearance letter through the ‘Upload New’ button under ‘EVIDENCE’.

Click on ‘Choose file’ and select your clearance letter document. Then click on ‘Start upload’.

Step 11

Select the first option.

Then select Gymnastics as your sport and fill in which coaching accreditation you have. Under

‘ORGANISATION NAME’ input Gymnastics Australia. You will need to upload evidence of this as well.

Scroll down and select Gymnastics as your sport and NSW as your state.

This step is very important; all coaches that work for a club/provider should link themselves with

that club/provider. To create the link, select your club/provider from the ‘COACHING PROVIDER’

option.

If you are a sole deliverer and are not linked with a club/provider, please contact Shohan M Khan,

Participation Officer at Gymnastics NSW on [email protected] or 02 8116 4133.

If a list doesn’t appear or your club/provider is not on that list, then select the ‘My Coaching

Provider doesn’t appear in this list’ and type in your club/ provider’s name.

List all the suburbs/areas you are willing to deliver gymnastics in.

Select the days and times you are able to deliver gymnastics.

You can leave this next section empty as your club/provider will manage bookings and set the rates

which are dictated by GA’s funding model.

Step 12

Review information inputted and check if it is correct. Next, read the ‘DECLARATION’ and check each

of the boxes if you accept and then submit your registration.

That completes the registration process for coaches.
