It was only a training exercise, but Pina followed the rules by the book: She sat like a good girl, called in her partner and got her favorite chew toy. Pina, a 5-year-old German shorthaired pointer, has been part of the Transportation Security Administra- tion’s canine explosives team for about 18 months, as one of more than 800 dogs stationed throughout the country. Every workday, TSA inspector Francis Boccabella will lead Pina through warehouses and ferry terminals and onto cargo planes. Jim Raffone is try- ing to find out. The Manalapan dad’s quest to save his 6-year-old son from the grip of Du- chenne muscular dystrophy, a rare and fatal disease, has inspired thousands of people to drop to the ground. By col- lecting $10 for 10 push-ups, the family’s JAR of Hope Foundation has raised $70,000 for Du- chenne research. Now Raffone is taking the campaign to another level: On Sunday, the foundation is coordinating an attempt to break the world record for most people doing push-ups at once. The gathering, called “Strength in Numbers,” will take place at the Manalapan Recreation Center.
