I am anticipating another wonderful year here at Arundel Elementary working with this amazing community. For our new families to Arundel, I am looking forward to get to know you and partner with you in the education of your children. Returning families, I am excited to build on the work we have started together and continue to build our relationships. I am looking forward to hearing of the adventures students have had over summer break. As I start my 4th year here, I am amazed at how much the children have grown and how much has changed in that short time. This coming year we have a two new preschool classes opening, the addition of Mariposa’s 4th grade staff, new classroom assignments to bring grade levels together and locate our TK and Kindergarten classes together on the lower yard. Arundel is a special community, and I am honored and humbled to be part of it. The parent support here is second to none. The time, energy, creativity and effort that all of you, the parents, put in is priceless and truly makes a difference for every child. Come and partner with us this year; volunteer in classes, chaperone on field trips, help with yard duty, lend a hand on the many events we have, serve on a committee, council or organization. We need the help of everyone to make this a successful year. The students are inspiring. Spending time with them always gives me great hope for the future. Daily I see in practice the “5C’s as they Create, Collaborate and Communicate as Critical Thinkers in a larger school Community. They always bring a smile to my face. The staff here at Arundel is incredible. They too demonstrate the 5C’s on a daily basis. It is a privilege to be part of this educational community that cares so deeply for the children. Welcome to a new school year! It is going to be a wonderful adventure! “Here’s to freedom, cheers to art. PARENT GUIDE

Arundel Elementary Welcomes You Back to School

Dear Arundel Families,

Welcome back for the 2017-2018 school year.

Arundel Parent Teacher Association

Welcome to the 2017/2018 School Year Your Arundel Parent Teacher Association (PTA) welcomes all families and students back to school for another exciting year at Arundel.

The mission of the PTA is to positively impact the lives of all children and families, and to promote collaboration between parents, schools and the community at large. Throughout the year, we focus our efforts on supporting this mission while at the same time, helping make our school a better place for all students.

We do this by managing and funding programs, initiatives and events throughout the year to enhance our children’s educational experience and foster a sense of community throughout our circle of families. Help make us stronger! The PTA thrives when we have voices from different grades and backgrounds. Joining our committees or attending meetings is an excellent way to represent diversity in the community, and we welcome new PTA members or interested parents to all our meetings.

This year, we look forward to meeting families at one of our many community building events, such as Bingo Night, Heritage Night, Science Night, Movie Night and so much more. We hope to see you at the biggest Arundel event of the year! Our Fun Run is coming up on October 15, and all students and families are invited to attend. Registration opens soon!

PTA and SCEF for Student Success Thank you! Due to your support of both the Arundel PTA and SCEF, our district is fortunate enough to be able to offer a wealth

of programs, activities and enrichment opportunities to our students that many California public schools do not have the ability to

fund. Our school, staff and students thank you for your ongoing support.

Read more about how your SCEF dollars are allocated at scefkids.org.

Art In Action Trained parent volunteers, called Art Docents, use classic works by great artists to enhance students' knowledge and appreciation of the artist, as well as art history and media types and techniques. Students then create their own original art pieces, which reinforce the concepts and techniques discussed in the masterpiece.

Interested in becoming an AiA Docent? Please contact [email protected].

Library Enrichment Parent volunteers assist Mrs. Townsend in the library by helping students select and check out books. Mrs. Townsend and the teachers work to find volunteers for each of the classrooms and to coordinate volunteer projects needed in the library. Sign-ups will be taken in your child’s individual classrooms.

Student Assemblies Assemblies enrich the educational experience of Arundel students throughout the school year with a variety of presentations by external artists and experts.

Hot Lunch Program The LunchMaster offers a variety of healthy, delicious meals which feature fresh produce, whole grains, hormone-free meats and dairy products, and low-fat/low-sugar recipes. Please consider volunteering to help serve meals from 11:45 to 12:20 to hungry Arundel students just outside the MUR. This is a fun and easy way to see your child during the school day and lunch volunteers are offered a free lunch credit with The LunchMaster each time they volunteer.

Lunchtime Volunteers Help our students during lunchtime by unwrapping straws, opening containers, keeping order, reminding kids to take out their trash, escorting the kids safely to the playground, and helping to keep them safe while they’re on the playground. Volunteers needed for BOTH lower and upper playgrounds. This is a great way to see your child interact with their peers in a playful setting.

Volunteers are needed Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11:55 am to 12:45pm.

Bingo Night

B-I-N-G-O! Join your fellow Arundel Knights in a fun-filled family evening of the classic game, Bingo! A great bonding event for our families!

Morning Greeters Given Arundel’s challenging location, safety is a top priority. To ease the morning congestion, volunteers are needed at the Upper Playground drop-off and the turnaround circle at the main entrance. You will assist with opening doors and helping children out of their cars during the morning rush. The shift is from 8:05am to 8:30am.

Heritage Fair Join us as we celebrate the diversity of our student body by coming together to share our countries and cultures with one another. Students can wear traditional clothing for colors representing their country. It is a fun-filled night of sharing delicacies from around the world, games, entertainment, & arts and crafts. You won’t want to miss out!

Healthy Cities Tutoring Program San Carlos’s Healthy Cities program trains volunteers from the community to tutor and mentor students. Volunteers work approximately one hour per week, and scheduling is flexible. Coordinators make attempts to pair you with an Arundel student. Current parents, grandparents, relatives, high school students are all welcome to participate.

For more general information about the Healthy Cities program, please visit their website at www.healthycitiestutoring.org or contact Donna Becht at [email protected].

Grade Level Highlights

Kindergartners will prepare a Thanksgiving feast for their

families. Later in the year they will celebrate the 100th day

of school with fun activities. To complete their Kindergarten

experience, they will watch chickens hatch from eggs to

complete their life cycle science unit.

First graders will delve into scientific subjects such as solids vs.

liquids; air and weather; and plants and animals. Their reading

aptitude will increase by leaps and bounds!

Second graders will become globetrotters as they learn about

other countries and cultures. Ice castles with buddies will be a

highlight of their school year!

Third graders will choose a famous person and do a

biographical presentation about them. They will also learn

about the Ohlone Indians.

Fourth graders will share memorable events in their final year

at the Arundel site. Activities include a field trip to the

California missions and an end-of-year picnic at Arguello Park.

Watch your child’s curiosity and science knowledge blossom before your very eyes, and learn something new yourself, too!
