Renée Margocee Named New Director of ArtsWestVirginiaDivisionofCultureandHistoryCommissionerRandallReid-Smith,withthesupportoftheWestVirginiaCommissionontheArts,appointedLogannativeRenéeMargoceetoserveastheDirectorofArtsforthedivision. “IampleasedtohaveRenéejointhedivision’smanagementteam,”saidCommissionerReid-Smith.“Sheapproacheseveryprojectwiththoughtfulattentiontothedetailsandanunderstandingofthegoalsthatouragencyhassetforitsartsprograms.ShewillbeinstrumentalinhelpingtoexpandtheArtsSection’sroleofreachingmoreyoungartistsandencouragingthemtopursuetheirinterestsinart.” Asdirector,Margoceeadministersthestate’sartsprograms,whichincludeartsadministrationservicesaswellasstateandfederalgrantsforWestVirginiaartsorganizations,individualartists,schoolsand

Page,anativeofGlasgowwhodiedearlierthisyearatage83,devotedmorethan50yearsofhislifetopromotinganddevelopingartsandcraftsinWestVirginia.Hewasacoordinatorofthestate’sefforttotrainandassistcraftspeopleinthe

Sawyer,ofLewisburg,hasworkedwiththeGreenbrierValleyTheatre’s(GVT)boardofdirectorsandlocalcommunityandstateleaderstosecurefundingtoexpandtheGVTfromasummeroperationperforminginatemporarystructureintoastate-of-the-artfacilityindowntownLewisburg.Todaythefacilityservesasthetheatre’sprimaryperformancevenueandahubforcommunityactivities.Sawyerhasservedasthetheatre’sartisticdirectorsince1992,andhelpedlaunchitsreputationforexcellencetothenationallevel.Thelong-timevocalistfortheWestVirginiaJazzOrchestra,actress,playwright,directorandformerRotarianoftheYearalsodevelopededucationalclassesforchildrenages4-18andcooperativeprogramswithlocalschoolsandclassesatNewRiverCommunityandTechnicalCollege. TheworkofAllisonMcIntyreofLincolnHighSchool,HarrisonCounty;KayleeIcenhowerofRavenswoodHighSchool,JacksonCounty;andMcKaylaMeadeofMingoCentralHighSchool,MingoCounty,isondisplayintheCannonTunneloftheU.S.CapitolthroughnextJune.AllthreeflewtoWashington,D.C.,inJunefortheofficialopeningoftheshow. Second-placewinnersinthestatecompetitionwereKaylaDavisofSpringValleyHighSchool,WayneCounty;HaileyMillerofRavenswoodHighSchool,JacksonCounty;BrooklynnLillyofPikeviewHighSchool,MercerCounty;ChesneyHudsonofRavenswoodHighSchool,JacksonCounty;andPeytonDolinofNitroHighSchool,KanawhaCounty. Theafterschoolprogramalreadymaybenettingresults.VanHighSchoolnowranksthirdinthestatefortestscoresandthetestscoresofstudentsatthejuniorhighschooljumpedawhopping42placesoverthepreviousyear. “Thereisnotenoughdatayet,butwefeellikewearegettingthere,”saidNoraDotson,federalprogramdirectorforBooneCountySchools.ExploreandSoarimprovesstudentachievementinreading,mathandsciencebyprovidingSTEAMeducation–science,technology,engineering,artsandmath–throughartandscienceintegration.Itaddressessuchlifeskillsascollegepreparationandcareerawarenesswhileincreasingparentalandcommunityinvolvementintheeducationalprocess. TheyalsosawaperformancebyPHILADANCO!ThePhiladelphiaDanceCompany,whichpresentsAfrican-Americantraditionsthroughdance.Reesealsomesmerizedsomestudentswith“Apollo:TotheMoon,”aproductiondesignedtointroducestudentstothewonderanddramaoftheApollospaceprogram. BooneCountySchoolsSuperintendentJohnHudsonsaidtheprogramhasbeeninvaluabletostudentswhoattendhigh-povertyandlow-performingschools. “Itconnectskidswhomaynototherwisebeconnected,”hesaid. Theopportunitytomakesomethingwiththeirhandsandtoseeitprogressfrombeginningtoendhelpsbuildtheirself-confidence,saidStaciLeech-Cornell,theClayCenter’scommunitylearningcentermanager. “Consistencyissomethingsomeofthesestudentsdon’tseeveryoften,”shesaid. “Thesestudentsneedtohavetheirhorizonsbroadened,and

seeingsuccessfulWestVirginiansisimportant,”shesaidinreferencetothevolunteermentorswhoparticipateintheprogram.“It’simportantthatthesestudentsidentifytheirownstrengthsandseethatsomethingthatmaybeconsideredoddandstrangetothemisactuallysuccessfulandneeded.” Since2004,21stCenturyLearning

Centershaveservedmorethan102,000studentsin34ofthestate’s55counties. Hudsonsaidanyoneinterestedincreatingasimilarprogramshouldfocusonwaystoincludeexploratorycomponentsalongwiththeacademiccomponents.“Ithelpstotieitintotherealworld.” Involvingallofthestakeholders--parents,students,teachers,administrators,communitymembers--inplanningalsoiscritical,Dotsonsaid. “Someveryrichdiscussionoccursonthatlevel.Everybodyhassomethingtocontribute.Takethoseresources,haveawellthought-outplanandbeflexible.Evenwithyourbestplan,you’regoingtohavetomakechanges,”shesaid. Twenty-four students from high schools in 20 counties competed in the 2014 West Virginia Poetry Out Loud competition in March.

West Virginia’s 2014 Poetry Out Loud champion Austin Gage is flanked by West Virginia Division of Culture and History’s Director of Arts Renée Margocee and award-winning actor and Beckley native Chris Sarandon.
