Arts For Life is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people facing serious illnesses. By providing educational art programs, we enrich patients’ lives, nurture their minds and spirits, and encourage positive healthcare experiences for children and their families. Arts For Life helps children all day long in four cities across North Carolina.

10 years of improving lives & healthcare experiences through the arts

Arts For Life began in 2001, with one patient, one hospital room, and one camera. Today, AFL’s staff members, volunteers, and interns teach the arts to patients for over 240 hours each week. We work with more than 4,700 patients statewide annually.

Our visual art, creative writing, and music programs decrease patient stress and anxiety, keep patients active and engaged, and help families cope with the realities of illness.

Dear Friends,

Imagine that you are a sick child. Really sick. Days, weeks tethered to an IV pole. Countless painful medical procedures. Needle sticks, scans, pokes and prods every-where you turn. Medicines that make you sicker than the disease you’re trying to cure.

Imagine having to be out of school, being isolated from your friends, missing out on proms and ball games and all the other activities your friends are doing. Imagine being lonely and scared, and as your treatments drag on and on, imagine sometimes even feeling hopeless.

Then, imagine that there’s a place where the drabness of a hospital room or clinic turns bright and brilliant colors, a place where you make the decisions and you’re in control, a place

where you can let your imagination and your spirit soar. Imagine sadness turning to joy as you proudly show off the masterpieces you’ve created. Imagine loneliness turning to friendship as you meet other kids who understand what you’re going through because they’re going through it too. Imagine minutes and hours when you forget the pain and fear, and instead feel yourself come alive in a whole new way.

That’s Arts For Life. Everyday, in four hospitals in North Carolina, our team of staff and volunteer teachers bring transfor-mative art, music, and creative writing experiences to children and teens battling serious illness. In 2010, we provided 19,729 lessons to 4,762 patients and their siblings and families. Who knows how many smiles that translated into? Who can assign a number to happiness?

It takes a lot of resources to do what Arts For Life does. It takes money and materials, of course. But mostly it takes people. We are profoundly grateful for all the people who make our work possible – our volunteers, donors, partners, board and staff who invest themselves so generously in our work. But above all, we are grateful for the children and teens and their families who teach us what it means to live and love. Thank you!

The Arts For Life Asheville team teaches music, art, and creative writing to young patients at Mission Children’s Hospital. We serve children and families through:• Clinic Art Stations (in both waiting rooms and in the Procedure Suite) at Zeis Children’s Cancer Center, the Olson Huff Center, and the general waiting area at Reuter Children’s Outpatient Center,• Inpatient Programs at Mission Children’s Hospital Inpatient Units, where we teach art and music at patients’ bedsides, and• Art Support Groups, special programming for patients, siblings, and families.

Interns & VolunteersIn 2010, many extraordinary people helped AFL Asheville bring more art, creative writing, and music lessons to young patients and families.

Our volunteer program expanded to include a creative writing teacher on the inpatient unit, and many of our volunteers celebrated 2nd, 3rd, 4th - and more! - anniversaries of their time with AFL. We are so grateful for the dedication and commitment of our volunteers.

AFL Asheville also has an incredible group of Community Volunteers, who help out with everything from preparing art projects for patients to hosting House Parties to stuffing envelopes. We could not do it without them!

Five exceptional people participated in our Internship Program in 2010, and our program is better for having them. We wish the best and brightest futures for Anna, Becky, Emily, Simone, and Terra.

2010 welcomed Melissa Hyman, Asheville’s Music Fellow to the team, thanks to the Janirve Foundation.

AFL’s programs in 2010The ladies of the Junior League of Charlotte helped bring many hours of arts programming to young patients at Hemby Children’s Hospital. An amazing group of eighteen women volunteered their time weekly to teach art to kids, and even arranged an exhibit of our kids’ artwork at the Mint Museum on Randolph. Thank you, Junior League!

AFL Charlotte’s Music Fellows, Grey and Kevin, continued to bring the sweet sounds of music into the hospital and clinic, and have led Teen Groups in collaborative lessons and sing-alongs. We are grateful to Speedway Children’s Charities, Arts & Science Council, and NC Arts Council for supporting the Music Fellowship Program.

Patients in our programs also worked with three fantastic interns this year - big thanks to Meghan, Jill, and Megan!

arts for life durhamArts For Life Durham teaches art to young patients who come to Duke Children’s Hospital and Health Center from all over the world. Sometimes, we will see children who have participated in our art programs at one of our other partner hospitals in Winston-Salem, Asheville, or Charlotte, so AFL provides a continuity of care that is unique to the the experiences of these special families. The AFL Durham team, led by Mary Margaret Fulk, teaches art to kids at:

• the Valvano Day Hospital and 4th Floor Clinics, where patients and families visit the hospital for outpatient procedures: pre- and post-transplant care, infusions, chemotherapy, tests, and more. Specialties at the 4th Floor Clinics include: Hematology/Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Allergy/

Immunology, and Neuro-Oncology.

• the 5200 Unit, or Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, the inpatient unit that kids undergoing bone marrow, stem cell, and cord blood transplants call home for two months or more. Art time on the PBMT unit provides these children with a creative, educational outlet, where they can interact with other kids, spend time with a parent, and learn exciting art skills.

arts for life at dukeAFL continues growing its intern and volunteer program into 2011, after a successful 2010 with Laura Maruzella and Abby Timberlake on the team. Abby and Laura helped bring many additional hours of art lessons to young patients at Duke. Thank you to these incredible ladies!

Our team in Durham spends lots of time with family members; when a child is on the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Unit for many, many weeks, we get to know families very well! Our programs are always sure to include brothers, sisters, and parents, so everyone enjoys having made special memories and quality family time.

Program Director Mary Margaret represents AFL at many of the special events Duke holds for patients and families. In 2010, AFL brought fun art activities to the Rainbow of Heroes Celebration in April, Rainbow of Heroes Walk in May, Duke’s Day of Remembrance in June, Camp Kaleidoscope in July (where AFL Durham teaches art to over 100 campers and counselors!) the Camp Kaleidoscope Reunion in October, and a Door Decorating Contest on the PMBT in November.

From the blog parent Amber Scavo writes for her daughter Julia:“This morning, she turned and said, “TV off. I need Betsey’s Art Kit.” Ms. Betsey is our Arts For Life teacher on the 9th floor here at Brenner. She is the heart of our clinic. This program brings art and music into the hospital for clinic patients and inpatient kids. It is an amazing thing to see these children in all stages of life and cancer treatment come out of their shells and express themselves through art. It truly is a lifeline. If you ever feel called to do something tangible for local kids with cancer, this is an excellent non-profit to fund. The kids love the art, love Betsey and all the volunteers. It is Arts For Life that makes these kids actually look forward to coming to the hospital for treatment. And they choose art over TV and video games so many times.

It is so true that art brings life. Arts For Life is the heart of the clinic and you make it a place that these kids love and actually want to come to!”

The Arts For Life Team in winston-salem

Patients and families visiting the pediatric oncology hematology clinic and inpatient units of Brenner Children’s Hospital count on AFL to help them through their healthcare experiences.

• Young patients arrive to the clinic and make a beeline to Arts For Life’s Clinic Art Station. With their AFL teachers, the children learn to create artistic masterpieces while they meet other kids and explore their talents. Being active at the art stations enables patients to stay focused and positive during what could be long, frustrating hours of waiting for and receiving treatments.

• In our Inpatient Program, AFL teachers travel from room to room teaching young patients guitar and music, painting and drawing, and sculpture and writing. In working with their AFL instructors, patients and their siblings experience success as they learn new artistic skills, express ideas and emotions, and build self-confidence.

• AFL’s Art Support Groups help patients to meet one another, find comfort in their common experiences, and interact in a supportive, fun environment.

...to all the friends & supporters of Arts For Life who made our programs possible in 2010!

Without your steady support and firm belief in the healing qualities of the arts, Arts For Life would not have touched the lives of over 4,700 patients, siblings, and

family members in 2010. Thank you for helping us to improve kids’ clinic visits, hospital stays, healthcare

experiences, and lives every day.
