about us

In 1942 the Army Arts and Crafts Program was established to

increase morale and find artists to help with enhancing buildings

and grounds of Army facilities. The program was so successful that

the Army created the “Arts and Crafts Section of Special Services”

to “fulfill the natural human desire to create, provide opportunities

for self-expression serve old skills and develop new ones and assist

the entire recreation program through construction work,

publicity, and decoration.”

Today the Stuttgart Arts and Crafts Branch of Family and MWR is a dynamic and vibrant Arts

and Crafts program with two facilities, retail operations, and a robust catalog of skill developing

instructional classes. We offer activities that provide deployment stress relief and resiliency to

Family members and Soldiers returning from deployment. The Arts and Crafts program continues

to promote Soldier and Family morale, and fosters individual self-improvement and enriches the

community’s cultural quality of life by offering affordable and quality creative arts instruction and

hands-on assistance.

It is a pleasure to serve in the Stuttgart community and we hope that you will find your

time here artistically fulfilling and be able to say, “I’m glad I live here.”

How to use this book: At the beginning of the book you will find a Class List with the name of

the class, the age range it’s for, the dates and the times. Some classes span multiple dates, so

you’ll want to make sure you can attend all the sessions. The rest of the book has the class

descriptions and prices. There are also fun facts, tips and other information scattered throughout

the book. We hope you enjoy reading and find this format informative and useful.

ART EDGE Patch Arts and Crafts Center has a

partnership with Child Youth and School

Services (CYSS) to bring you the Art Edge

program. Art Edge courses are four week

developmental courses designed to provide a

more in depth look at that particular art

form. Art Edge courses must be registered for

through the Parent Central Services office.

Call DSN 430-7480/7488 or CIV 0711-680-

7480/7488 for more details.

Having fun with Mixed Media Take a

blank canvas and day by day add a new layer

of depth with different media and textiles to

create a one of a kind work of art.

Edge Jewelry Time! Wire wrap jewelry

time. Learn how to make a bracelet, earings

and a ring using the wire wrap technique.

Add beads to give it a sparkle.

Beginning Knitting and Crochet Students will learn how to do the basic

stitches in either knitting or crochet. In these

sessions the student will be able to practice

the basics over and over again while creating

a wash cloth or a scarf. Each student will

receive a kids starter kit and gain a life-long

skill.

Manga

Anime artists of all skill levels will benefit

from this ongoing drawing workshop.

Students will be able to evaluate their own

needs and focus on areas that need

improvement, such as eyes, hands, hair, etc.

Students brand new to Manga drawing are

also welcome to attend and will start with

the basics of human form.

LITTLE ARTISTS Encourage the little artist in your child at an

early age to promote creativity and self-

esteem. Little Artist classes are designed for

parents to be hands-on with their child to

complete the project. Therefore we

recommend no more than two children per

adult to get the most out of the class. Classes

will focus on motor skills, creativity and skill

building. Don’t expect a masterpiece, but

remember that to your child every one of

their creations is a work of art!

Older and younger children may sit in on class, but classes are designed for 3 – 5 year olds.

SPONGE & DUCT TAPE BOATS $15

Make fun floating

boats out of a sponge

and duck tape! This

boat will be ready to

set sail once you have completed it.

PAINTED EASTER EGGS $15

Kids will use acrylic

paints to create

unique Easter Eggs

that can be enjoyed

for more than just

one Easter!

WHY CRAFT?

PHYSICAL Crafting at a young age helps

children develop fine motor skills and eye-

hand coordination. Crafts like clay hand-

building also help develop strength, and of

course imagination!

FAMILY The family that crafts together

stays together, right? That may not be far off.

When you craft with your child you are

helping build a bond that will last forever.

SOCIAL Bringing your child to a group

setting helps them get used to being around

other kids and sharing space and supplies. It’s

also an opportunity for you to meet other

parents with kids the same age!

EMOTIONAL Crafting can be an excellent

way to relieve stress and express inner

emotions. It can also be a lesson in patience

and disappointment! So no matter if the craft

is a disaster or a masterpiece, there is

something to learn from the experience.

SPIRITUAL The sense of accomplishment

kids feel after completing a project is what

makes craft classes so rewarding. You child

will feel good about knowing they made

something on their own.

DO YOU TEACH?

If you have an art or craft skill and enjoy

helping others please consider joining our

contracted teaching team. We are

currently seeking a stained glass and

lampwork bead instructor; a Wilton

certified Cake Decorating instructor; and

someone who loves paper crafting of all

forms to teach classes such as rubber

stamping, lettering, and mixed media.

Before you begin there are some things you

have to do. Our process goes as follows:

1. Bring us samples of your art so we can see

what you do.

2. Teach our staff a sample class so we can

get an idea of your teaching style and what

the class is like.

3. Fill out some paperwork. There’s a bit of

that. To make it go faster here’s some things

you can get ready now: resume, lesson plan,

samples to promote the class.

4. Sit back and wait. It takes a bit of time to

write a contract so during this time you can

work on more samples and really prepare

your class syllabus.

We depend on members of our community

to round out our curriculum, so if you see a

hole in our programming that you can fill,

please consider teaching!
