Art Task: Figurative Artists Research

Francis Bacon

I chose these pieces of artwork because I liked the representation of character and the layout. I like the use of colours and flat tones and shades.

The images are not realistic of the human form, but show a more disfigured, mutilated presence and reflect an intense emotion.

Gustav Klimt

I chose these images because I liked the way the artist has portrayed the women. I like the portrait layout and the way the characters are standing boldly and almost intimidatingly.

He has used dull, similar tones and colours in both pieces of work to make them flow better and a similar style and technique. He has used differential strokes of the brush to create a complex piece altogether by overlapping colour and markings.

Pablo Picasso

I chose these pieces of artwork because I liked the way that the artist has used bold block colours and odd shapes to make up the piece of work. I like the way the face is laid out and the number of lines and lack of shading. It is unrealistic abstract work, and in an almost cartoonish fashion.

Eric Zener

I chose these pieces of work because I liked the modern photo realism in the way he has created them. Both pieces show an intense amount of detail and realistic presence. The colour hues are all similar depending on the specific piece, showing continuity with each image.

I find the way the artist has laid them out interesting, with the stance and position of the people and the angle it is at.

I chose these pieces of work because the way the artist has created this work is unique and intriguing as it is rare for an artist to explore figurative modelling under water. The pieces of work show depth and intricate detail with each individual statue which are quite realistic.

My own researched figurative artists: Sigmund Ables

I chose this artist specifically because I thought his style of creating art was interesting. The first image of a man holding a mask appealed to me because of the bright contrasting colours and the 2D side on angle. It shows a side of a different country and culture, and way of life, set in Africa.

The next image I chose because I liked the layout and the way it seems more like it should be in a realistic horror comic. I like the soft colours and mellow tone used throughout the piece which creates a dull, gloomy mood. The lighter yellow and orange hues shown on the lampshade and the boys’ face create a more light-hearted feel, which is supported by his mischievous expressions.

I chose these pieces of work because the dark, disturbing feel was inventive and eye catching. The image on the left which is a more abstract version of a figure uses bold, strong colours together which are all a darker hue including black, red and dark brown.

The figure on the right appealed to me because of the vibrant contrast between the white skin and pitch black background. It has a looming, foreboding feel about it. The style is clearly realistic, and the contents represent a horror linked feel.

Steven C Layne

I chose this artist because I liked his almost archaic, medieval style of working and how the sculptures were very simple but realistic to the human form.

The statue on the left was made using clay, and is of an old time Japanese warrior. The way the man boldly stands gives a strong presence, and the rough texture of the skin adds to the detail; it’s almost as though he has been in battle and is covered in scars.

The sculpture on the right appealed to me for similar reasons as the one before. Its’ square, robotic limbs and hinges for joints of the body reflect a stiff, inhuman feel yet still it appears human realistic and reflects the young innocence of the small child.

This artist appealed to me because I enjoyed the innocent, unique style and technique she had and how she made all her work personal to her. The paintings use similar styles, with dull hues and soft colours, and a different point of view. I liked the bronze sculpture of the elderly woman because it showed detail and embodied personality and character.

Belgin Yucelen

I chose these sculptures because I liked the abstract approach with the human form and the way the artist set them out and the position they are standing in.

I liked the use of different colours for the materials in building the sculptures and the scenes they are set in.
