DESCRIPTION

Art enriches the soul and promotes Culture. The many places where art is protagonist have traditionally been at the centre of iGuzzini's attention, as proved by the collection of projects illustrated in this catalogue.Museums and exhibitions areas operate to favour artistic and cultural development. Both permanent and temporary exhibitions collect and preserve artworks that are exhibited to the public to communicate their history and meaning. In this approach, light plays a fundamental role: it allows for best enjoyment, exalts the expressive potential of artworks and exhibition settings, valorises and protects the exhibits while respecting their original spirit and ensuring their preservation. For more information, visit www.iguzzini.com

We have worked in and for “light”since 1958. This was the year whenthe Harvey Creazioni, a small companythat produced lamps for the home, was founded. Today we are the leadingItalian manufacturer in the “Lighting”market, and we rank among the topEuropean manufacturers.

We aren’t satisfied by simply makinggood lights. We want be the creatorsof good lighting: light that shines in aroom, a house, a building, a museum,a cathedral, a company, a plaza, anairport, and, yes... even an entire city.Good lighting has to be created withthe awareness that it has to integratewith its environment, taking carenot to invade it, darken it, or violate it.Light must be respected, and lighthas to, in turn, respect the natureof people and things.

The iGuzzini mission is therefore tostudy light, to know light and to makeit known; improving the integration witharchitecture through industrial design.Because of this, a large part of what wedo is to offer consultation on lightingtechniques, both in the design phaseand as an after-sales service.

The role of light

The Eye and Vision

The human eye is the starting pointof all lighting design. It isinstinctively drawn towards thebrightest object in the field ofvision, and it is also attracted tocontrast, change or movement. The skilful Lighting Designer canuse some of the features of the eyeto increase the power of his or herdesign. It then becomes possible tocreate a visual hierarchy of objects.A typical museum or exhibition willhave a range of objects and

surfaces to be lit. These could be:the artefacts, the gallery spaceitself (if the exhibition is in aprestigious place), supportinggraphic material (from a tiny labelthat carries an artefact's numberto a major piece of graphic artwork)or the floor surface, so that visitorscan see their way around safely andcomfortably. The visual hierarchyshould support the story being toldby the exhibition. If the lightingdesigner starts with no light at all,

he or she can build up lighting layerby layer to whatever relative andabsolute levels he or she needs tosupport the story being told by theexhibition. Moreover, changes ofemphasis can be created by addingdynamic and coloured light. Greatcare must be taken when usingcoloured light, though a change ofcolour may be as subtle as using awhite light with a different colourtemperature.

Project Goalsand Obligations

Tasks of theLighting Designer

The variety of artefacts in culturalheritage, as well as their presencein different contexts is so large thatit makes it difficult to identifyabsolute parameters for theircorrect conservation and lighting. Therefore the following criteriamust be interpreted according tothe materials of the artwork, theconservation status, the locationand other requirements, always insynergy with art historians, museum directors, curators, exhibition designers, etc.

Project Goals Maximise the enjoyment andunderstanding of the artwork by:• using light with appropriate

colour rendering• appropriate perception of two

and three-dimension artefactsby either uniform or directional and character-revealing lighting.

Project Obligations• Conservation: restricting the

damages visible infrared and ultraviolet light can cause

• Glare control and avoiding reflections

• Allowing adaptation timefor the eyes.

The lightingscheme

Colour Rendering

For obvious reasons, the quality ofthe light used in museum lightingtakes on a pre-eminent importance. One important factor is theColour Rendering Index (CRI),which expresses the light's abilityto saturate the colours of theilluminated objects and thereforerender their perception. For example, paintings in an artgallery require the highest colourrendering index. In this case, the CRI must be higher than 90.It is however necessary to keepin mind that the colour renderingindex is a conventional value which

expresses an average of thecolour renderings of a limitedseries of sample colours. Therefore, it will be necessaryto analyse carefully the spectraldistribution of the light.A simple way to check whethera light source is suitable is to tryit out on a sample of the artwork.Light sources with CRI greater than90 are halogen lamps, incandescentlamps, 5-band fluorescent lamps. These are typically used whereaccurate colour rendering is critical, for example in: paintings, frescoes, tapestries, and carpets.

Light sources with CRI between80 and 89 are 3-band fluorescentlamps and metal halide lamps.A light source with a CRI less than80 is the white light sodium lamp. This can be used when colourrendering is not important, for example when lightingmonochromatic objects, mosaics, stone, marble, inlaid work, glassesor statues.

Lightingthree-dimensional works

The lighting of a three-dimensionalobject with a predominantlyunidirectional light can helpthe appreciation of its shape. The direction of the prevalent(or key) light must be decidedwith great care as it will havea huge effect on the appearanceof the object. Where appreciationof the parts of the work of art

that are left in the shade is alsonecessary, one needs to providea second or third luminaireto illuminate the shaded partsfrom a different direction(fill light). The intensity of the fill lightshould be lower than the key lightto keep the key light dominant.

Luminous interpretation

Lighting gives differentinterpretations of the meaningof an artefact (statues, jewels, ceramic vases, etc.).The lighting techniques offered bytechnological developments allowlighting designers, art historiansand museum curators to choosethe most suitable lighting solutionto fulfil their goals. Backlightis the ideal technique to exaltthe silhouette of the objectagainst a luminous background. On the contrary, a key light can beused to highlight a specific detail

of the artwork. Additionally,a new vision of the object can beprovided by biodynamic light.Although it may seem very distantfrom a conservative lightingapproach, biodynamic lightbecomes very appropriate if wethink about the light generatedby a candle or by the sun. Anotherpossibility is offered by dynamiccoloured light. In spite of beinga very delicate issue, the lightingdesigner in agreement withhistorians, art critics and curatorsmay decide to use such a

technique in some situations. The images above illustrate somemoments of the experience duringthe “Knowing the Shape” project, supervised by the iGuzziniResearch Centre in collaborationwith historians, art critics, museumexperts, curators and otherspecialised figures. The project showed that numerousdevelopments are possible, and full of surprises.

Lightingtwo-dimensional works

If the aim is to provide uniformillumination over a surface, thenthere are many ways of achievingthis. A number of spotlights can beset up in a row, all shining down, orup, onto the surface. If their beamsare adjusted so that they merge, then the result can be a reasonablysmooth illumination.

Alternatively, luminaires with amore appropriate beam distribution, such as wall washers, could beused. These have a wide spreadand an asymmetric distributionthat is designed for lighting largesurfaces uniformly.

The character of light

Walls and texture

With lighting it is possible toemphasise different aspects oftexturised or three-dimensionalobjects with a complex shape, such as artefacts or building façades.Let's imagine a situation in whichwe want to illuminate a stone wallin a museum or exhibition to showits importance and value. If weinstall a luminaire 30 cm from thebase of the wall and aim the lightbeam towards the wall, light willskim the surface, lighting every partof the stone, while every recesswill be in deep shadow.

The wall appears almost black andwhite. Colours can be hardly seenbecause of the dominant surfacetexture and the wall looksaggressive and frightening. If the luminaire is moved 90 cmaway from the wall, a great changeoccurs in the appearance of thewall: the texture is less dominantand some colour is now visible.Moving the luminaire further awayfrom the wall, to 3 and 8 metres, the surface is softened and flattened, the texture is harder to see and coloursbecome more and more visible.

The eye cannot tell which partsproject and which are set back. The only information the eye getsis about the colour of the stone. The correct direction of the lightis a powerful tool for the LightingDesigner to create the desiredeffect and show the wallappropriately.

Damage by visiblelight, infrared and ultraviolet light

Many objects fade when exposedto light. Objects that areof organic origin, such as leather, fabrics, wood, fur and feathersfade badly. Many pigments used in paints are also faded by light. The rate of fading depends onmany factors, but generally thehigher the light level and the longerthe exposure, the worse the fading.

Most light sources generatemore than visible light, they makeinfrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV)radiation as well. Ultraviolet lightcauses fading of pigments anddetachment of painting layers.Infrared produces heating thatcan cause microcracks.A variety of methods can be usedto control the infrared radiation.

Lamps with dichroic reflectors canbe used since they reflect the lightand dissipate most of the heattowards the back of the fixtures. Alternatively, IR filters can be usedto remove the infrared componentof the light, or LEDs, which makeno IR. Ultraviolet radiation can becontrolled by UV filters, or by usinglamps with a low or zero UV output.

Avoiding reflections

One of the worst experiencesin a gallery is when the view of apicture that is shiny or mountedbehind glass is spoiled by a brightand glary image of a spotlightreflected in the glass. We must remember that in caseof a reflecting surface the lightis reflected with the same angleit reaches the surface with.To avoid reflections on artworks, one can carry out a test basedon the law of specular reflection.

To do this graphically, first draw aline to represent the glossy surfaceof the painting. Mirror luminaireP into position P’ and connectP’ with the observer's eyes.If the line (P’O1) intersects thevertical line (which representsthe wall) outside the yellow area(luminous flow of fixture) C1,the observer will see no veilluminance from that position. Therefore, the position of thefixture is correct.

In the figure, the position of thefixture with respect to observerO2, O3, O4 is correct. The position of observer O1is correct, even if borderline.Reflections off the surfaces of glasscases can be equally annoying.Vertical glass surfaces can actas the picture described above.Angled surfaces can also createreflections, but the rulesare the same.

Telling a story

Adaptation of the eyeand visual perception

Many artefacts are beautifulto look at. But to look at them one needs lightand this light may damage them. A simple practical solution mightbe to reduce the light level. This does not stop the damage, but if the light level is low enough(50 lux is a typical light level foran artefact that needs to beprotected), the rate of fading is soslow that it becomes acceptable.

In fact, the human eye can seesurprisingly well also with low lightlevels, but it takes time to adaptto the variations of light levels. The brighter is the light in theprevious scene, the longerit takes for the eye to adapt. If, for instance, we pass froma scene under bright sunlightat 50,000 lux to a scene witha 50 lux, it can take five minutesfor the eye to adapt.

Therefore, to make sure thatvisitors are not disturbed by suddenchanges in lux levels and the visualperception of the artwork is notdeformed, the levels of the lightshould be lowered progressively.

A public assetto valorise

The Lighting Designer is ableto make the artefact tell a story,a story that reinforces or iscomplementary to the story beingtold by the exhibition designer or bythe building. The Lighting Designershould light the objects in such away they are not damaged by light. And the artefact, the supportingmaterial and the surrounding spaceshould have the right relativedegrees of emphasis.

At the same time, the designershould be humble, because hisor her designs may be very shortcompared with the lives of thewonderful objects and buildings.Works of art are public assets: ourtask is to bring them to light andpreserve them for the enjoyment ofthe current and future generations.

14

The Appearanceof Luminaires

The Lighting Designer shouldconsider the appearance of alllighting equipment very carefully. The lighting equipment is a designstatement in itself and the wayit is seen is part of the story beingtold by the exhibition or the space. It may be appropriate for it tohidden away, so that it does notintrude on the view of the artefactsor spaces. In this case, the LightingDesigner should find places toconceal the luminaires and usecolours and styles of luminairethat are as discrete as possible.

Alternatively, it might be appropriateto show off the luminaires, since theuse of highly visible, well designed, modern luminaires might be partof the story told by the project.Sometimes the contrast of modernluminaires with historic buildingscan work very well. There can be an honesty inexpressing good looking modernlighting technology. For each project the LightingDesigner has to choose anappropriate solution for theappearance of the luminaires.

Flexibility

Spaces get larger and larger, requirements increase and placeslose their functional limits, openingtheir doors to multiple uses.In such a scenario, the task of agood lighting design is to guaranteemaximum flexibility in terms ofinstallation management, studyingeach lighting fixture to satisfythe most diverse needs ofcontemporary environments.

The use of a large number ofaccessories, exact tactics andadvanced technological tools, such as tracks for product mobility, electronic control gear, light controlsystems, interchangeable optics(without the use of tools), focusingdevices to adjust the light beam, adjustable products and mechanicallocking for aiming give life tocustomised, accurate high-performing lighting directions.

Accessories

The wide array of accessories is oneof the main strengths of all iGuzziniproducts, ensuring total adjustabilityfor all uses to satisfy the lightingrequirements of a variety ofsettings. The innovative accessory-holder ring that is available for mostproducts allows to install up tothree flat filters at a time, in additionto one external accessory. IR andUV filters ensure protection againstinfrared and ultraviolet radiation,

while the special honeycomb louverreduces glare, just like the specialdiffuser screen for visual comfort. Warmtone and coldtone filtersprovide colour temperaturechanges, while refractors forthe elliptical distribution of theluminous beam, barndoors andasymmetric screens ensure exactlighting of objects and spaces.Coloured filters create chromaticplays of light in transit areas.

Energy saving

For spaces such as museums, exhibition halls or cultural areas, which are intended to host a largenumber of visitors everyday, thereduction of running costs is acrucial issue. The correct selectionof innovative energy-saving lightsources and the use of state-of-theart light control systems provideexcellent luminous efficiency withsignificant energy saving.

Optics Visual comfort

The plurality of reflectors incombination with optics, filtersand innovative professional lightsources allows to obtain excellentlighting performances and producesuggestive light and colour effects. The special faceted finish ofsuperpure aluminium reflectorsprovide high luminous efficacy withuniform light beam distribution.

Ideal lighting is not only a matter of high performance, it alsoinvolves correct visual comfortfor those who live in the space.Especially for museums andexhibitions areas, the productionof glare or incorrect illuminancelevels impairs the user's wellbeing,as well as his or her emotionalperception of the light, setting andartworks. The rear position of lightsources and the use of specificaccessories ensure a correctcomfortable visual experience.

The advanced technology used tocreate innovative lighting fixturedoes not necessarily involvecomplex maintenance.Well-designed lighting fixturescan be characterised by easymaintenance. The luminaires usedin museums require easy use andmaintenance, as well as safety.

This is the reason why no-tool orsimplified installation is provided, without specific devices that aredifficult to use in such anenvironment. Paying attention tosimilar details is not only a proofof great care for details, but alsoa sign of commitment tothe product life cycle.

In 1998 iGuzzini was given theopportunity to illuminate oneof the most prestigious Italianmonuments ranked by expertsamong the ten best museums atinternational level: Villa Borghese inRome. Acting as technical sponsor,iGuzzini provided the luminaires andcarried out a research work in thefield of the most advanced lightingsystems in collaboration withthe main representatives of theSuperintendence for CulturalHeritage and the Central Institutefor Restoration.

This building is not only the firstartwork of Galleria Borghese, butalso a container for more works ofart. Therefore the luminaires wouldhave certainly hidden a part of thegallery. The XO system fixtures forgeneral lighting were placed onthe cornices all around the room.Accent lighting is producedby Cestello luminaires. Both lighting fixtures are completelyhidden to the visitors' eyes. The museum lighting is basedon a computerised and centralisedcontrol system.

Lux sensors were installed in the exhibition rooms; one sensorwas mounted outside to measuredaylight; another sensor was placedinside to measure overall lighting.By relating the values measuredby the two sensors with the bestperception of the artworks, the light quality is kept constant, with the possibility to reproducethis ratio over time.

In recent years Palazzo Madamaunderwent complex restorationworks, which started in 1997 andfinished in December 2006, withthe reopening of the MunicipalMuseum of Ancient Art.Originally the entrance door to thecity of Turin, the palace becamea fortified castle and was finallyconverted in a residential buildingby architect Filippo Juvarra. The recuperation project was adifficult challenge, and requiredmany years of study and research, including in the technical lightingfield. The need to have multipleinstallation terminals withoutincreasing the number of wireways

So, in order tosatisfy the needs of this historicalexhibition area, the final solutionsguarantee the correct quantity anddistribution of the light, although ina limited space. The Museo Egizio in Turin is the onlymuseum in the world, other thanCairo, dedicated exclusively toEgyptian art and culture. The extraordinary collection of largestatues personifying sovereigns, divinities and princes, is among themain attractions. In February 2006these pieces were presented in avery innovative interpretation byDante Ferretti, architect and world-renowned film set designer, whofocused his treatment of the subjecton a sense of mysticism. For the newgallery setup, accordingly, he decidedto encase the exhibits in a mediumthat would give the public the sameperception of the sacred. With this inmind, the light that envelops thestatues is carefully metered, and

reflections have been created thatcancel out the empty spacesurrounding them, enhancing theplasticity of the shapes. Ferretti'sconcept has been transformed intoreality thanks not least to theextensive experience of Mekané inthis field of work. In the new layout,a dark red coloured skin covers thewalls and the roof. Within this lining, accent lighting provided by Le Perroquet spots with framerenhance the exhibits by bringingthem up out of the murky depths. The first step was to conduct a study of the existing situation(a record of every statue). From themeasurements taken, a model wasobtained on which Dante Ferretti wasable to test his ideas for the set-up.

Given also that this was a temporaryexhibition, all the solutions adoptedhad to be reversible. The exhibition is completed byimages projected onto the walls, new captions and an atmosphericsound accompaniment. All lightingeffects were obtained withLe Perroquet fixtures, which withvarious optical assemblies andsuitable accessories provide bothbackground and accent light. The interplay of light and shadowaugmented by mirrors, the particularillumination of the statues, the slow-moving images and, not least, thesoundtrack, all accompany the visitoron a truly fascinating visual journey.

The selection of the luminaires wasdetermined by the decision to usenarrow light beams with 365°rotation. The light generated by the spotlightscan be also adjusted with a rotarypotentiometer. The chromaticrendering index is Ra>90 in theexhibition areas. The collection will be transferredto its final venue in 2009, afterrefurbishing and completing theNeues Museum.

Museums have evolved over time, undergoing importanttransformations. Today, newmuseums have the task ofpromoting culture by appealingto higher and higher numbers of visitors. Here technology, innovation, creativity and flexibilityare the key words, also for thelighting design activity that acquireshigher freedom. The function of thelight is no longer limited to highlightartworks: it suggests journeys andcreates suggestive effects able tocaptivate and conquer the observer.

In the heart of Dallas the NasherSculpture Center is a charmingoasis beyond time, a refuge forarts in voluntary contrast withthe chaos, noise and heightof downtown skyscrapers. The institution was created toexhibit, study and preserve thebeauty of modern sculpture in thelargest private collection of theworld, with over 350 works exhibitedindoor and in open air spaces. The architectural project byarchitect Renzo Piano developsover a rigorous sequence of fiveidentical pavilions in parallel

position, made of travertine stone,a material with colour and texturerecalling the image of ancient ruins. The structure is defined as “noroof” for the presence of a lightaluminium membrane that coversthe building through which daylightfilters inside. The glass façades thatsurround the exhibition halls createa sense of continuity betweenpavilions, garden and street. In thisinnovative urban refuge, the lightingproject aims at integrating daylightand artificial light, creating asuggestive atmosphere in whichthe light underscores the

architectural and structural detailsof an exhibition space whichbecomes an intimate delicatescenario for the exaltation ofsculptures. Le Perroquet spotlightsare integrated in interior spacesand exterior façades with a stronginnovative design, providing accentlight that blends with the daylightcoming through the roof and thewalls during the day and replacesnatural light at night. The resultis the creation of a fascinatingscenario that converts the NasherSculpture Center in an elegantartistic “object” to admire.

The High Museum of Art,established in 1905, houses acollection of over 11,000 pieces(American art from the XIX and XXcenturies, European and African art)and is part of the Woodruff ArtsCenter, a non-profit organisationpromoting the visual andperforming arts and encompassingthe Alliance Theatre, the AtlantaCollege of Art, the AtlantaSymphony Orchestra and variousstructures aimed at young visitors.

iGuzzini used a new special versionof Le Perroquet 70 W, with streetoptic and pole-mounted spotlight, and the 39W version with floodoptic (used outside for the firsttime) to illuminate the new andextremely important Renzo Piano-designed museum in the UnitedStates, an extension of theprevious centre which had itselfbeen designed by anothersuperstar from the world ofarchitecture: Richard Meier.

Three new buildings wereconstructed, substantiallyincreasing the amount of exhibitionspace available (the surfaces of theMuseum now cover a total areaof 29,000 square metres) andthe opportunity was taken toaccentuate the peculiarities ofthe existing building which wasconstructed by Richard Meier.

The inauguration of Tenerife Espaciode las Artes (TEA) of Santa Cruz, inthe Tenerife island, took place inOctober 2008. With over 20,000 m2,TEA is a cultural infrastructure withthe clear contemporary vocation ofcollecting art while becoming anurban fragment in the centre oftown that connects the old districtand the modern area. Herzog &De Meuron combine a series ofdiagonal elements and slopingfloors that include a flight of stairs. The public space penetrates inthe building through geometricarchitectural shapes that favour theopening towards the outside andprovide dynamism and light, alsoat night, when the artificial light

passes through the irregular holesof the walls. The structure minglesdifferent spaces and activitiesand in addition to art collections, temporary exhibition halls, auditorium, library, cafeteria andshop, it houses the PhotographyCentre of the island, the ÓscarDomínguez Institute and Bibliotecade la Red Insular. For the lightingproject iGuzzini providedconsultancy services and productsto meet the multiple needs of theareas. The Paul Klee Centre in Bern, inaugurated on June 20th 2005,houses the world's largestcollection of works by the Swisspainter, in a "landscape" buildingdesigned by the Genoese architectRenzo Piano. Three glass and steelhills give form to an architecturaldesign that reproduced themovement of the sea, in harmonywith the surrounding mountainouslandscape and inspired by the ideaof capturing the sense of light

and lightness and the preciousrelationship with nature thatcharacterises Klee's work. The lighting design involves ajudicious mix of direct and indirectlight provided by suspended andtrack-mounted Le Perroquet forlighting the works with degreesof brightness ranging from50 to 100 lux. The indirectLe Perroquet use 70W metal-halidelamps with colour temperatureof 4200 and 3000K.

The other luminaires use 75 and100W low-voltage halogen lamps. They are all special products, insofar as they were adaptedfor installation on the metal roofsupports, which have differentheights and gradients to createthe wave effect that can be seenfrom the outside.

At the beginning of 1996 the Cuban Government granted theauthorisation for a renovationand enlargement project for theNational Museum of Fine Arts. The old complex was enlargedand integrated with two otherbuildings, thus becominga national landmark in theartistic and cultural field. The main goal of the lightingproject was the integrationbetween natural and artificial light.

Such a solution allowed tosignificantly reduce energyconsumption and operational costs. The design approach is put intopractice thanks to a detectorparallel to the side walls. This opening conveys the naturallight filtered by special glassesalong the vertical surface of thewall and the horizontal planeof the area adjacent to it. Non-uniformity is reducedby the artificial light system.

The installation is composed ofperfectly concealed fluorescentmodules placed in the "luminousgroove" and capable of changingtheir luminous intensity thanks to apre-set and calibrated programmerelying on proximity sensorsinstalled in the false ceiling.Luminance reaches 100 lux onthe upper part of the walls andgradually goes down to 40 luxon the walking surfaces.

Lingotto, the first Fiat factory, wasturned into a multi-purpose centrein 1987. Since September 2002it has become a new prestigiousvenue, designed by Renzo PianoBuilding Workshop for temporaryshows and for the exhibition ofAgnelli's private collection. The new building is located above the Lingotto.

InteriorsThe general lighting of the exhibitionarea relies on the natural lightpenetrating through the ceiling, filtered by a false ceiling made offabric panels and integrated witha dimmable fluorescent system, thus guaranteeing a suitable lightinglevel at any time, regardless of theweather conditions. Accent lightingis obtained by means of specialLe Perroquet spotlights.

ExteriorsIn designing the exterior lightingfor the Scrigno, the schemeconcentrated on creating a“floating” effect of the buildingover the Lingotto, especially visibleat night. This result was achieved byaccurately positioning and aimingthe Lingotto floodlights, thuscreating a contrast of light andshadow. At night, the Scrignoseems to be floating, supportedby a carpet of light, as a resultof the lighting of its lower part.

The recuperation of the San Domenicomonumental complex originatesfrom the intention to integratethe historical space into themodern town of Forlì.From the architectural and functionalviewpoint, the project includes therestoration of the former churchand convent in order to use themas auditorium-exhibition space andmuseum-art gallery, respectively, with an elegant system of corridorswith numerous cell doors.A crucial role was played by thelighting design, which was entrustedto Wilmotte & Associes andLucchi & Biserni.

Their collaboration with iGuzzini gavelife to two special products especiallystudied to give a personalised answerto the complex' requirements:a suspended luminaire made ofglass with spotlights and a modularmulti-lamp fitting, which was lateron included in the standard collectionunder the name of Composit. The adjustability of the spotlights andthe possibility to use light sources or accent lighting in combinationwith a fluorescent lamp with indirectemission allowed to highlightartworks and architectural details. The following products were integratedin the lighting design to better satisfy

the multiple needs of the variousspaces: Linealuce fittings with uniformsoft light, recessed Ledplus forconnection areas, Frame fittingswith high efficacy and minimalvisual impact and Trimmer spotlightssliding on a special structure. The structure designed by Jean-MichelWilmotte is the evolution of the firstmodel used at Louvre in Paris. It is anoriginal trolley fixed to structural rodsby means of tracks. The structure isprovided with plastic wheels that allowto slide the luminaire body along theentire length of the rod for maximumflexibility in case of a different layout of the lighting design.

The famous Matisse Museumof Cateau-Cambrésis reopened itsdoors to the public on 8 November2002, exactly 50 years after itscreation, after months ofrestoration and restructuring worksunder the supervision of architectsEmmanuel and Laurent Baudoin, under the patronage of theGeneral Council of the NorthernDepartment and in closecollaboration with SuperintendentDominique Szymusiak.Over 700 prestigious works aredisplayed in 17 temporary exhibitionhalls, covering an area of 2,400 m2.Visitors are emotionally taken to amagic artistic adventure in a spacethat still enjoys the atmosphere ofthe original historical location.

The lighting design developed byiGuzzini in close collaboration withthe Superintendence aimed atcreating versatile solutions to adaptto the museum's changing needs.Daylight inundates the exhibitionhalls through the large openingsand is integrated, both during theday and in the evening, with a sortof artificial light which is close tonatural and never aggressive tovalorise and protect the artworks.Le Perroquet fittings equipped withoptics with different light cones, devices for the adjustment of theluminous intensity and ellipticalor diffusing refractors, provedto be the ideal solution to ensureuniform balanced light, withsome indirect emission.

In the "Cabinet des dessins"Gabbiano spotlights witha special diffusing glass screenare used to respect the extremefragility of the works.Total flexibility was a majorrequirement for the lighting designof the large hall used for temporaryexhibitions in order to adjust todifferent display layouts. After acareful selection of the luminaires, which were tested according todifferent exhibition designs,Vela wall washer and Le Perroquetfittings enriched by a full arrayof accessories in the permanentexhibition halls were chosen.

In April 2007, in Madrid, three yearsafter the terrible terrorist attack of March 11 at Atocha station, the Spanish Royals inaugurated amemorial to the victims designedby studio FAM “Fascinante Aromay Manzana”. The imposingsculpture opposite the stationis characterised by its 11m-highcylindrical glass dome. The structure is composed oftwo layers of different material: the external “skin” madeof glass blocks and the internal“membrane” made of ETFE, a lighttransparent material where theinnumerable messages receivedafter the tragic event were printed.

When entering the monumentfrom the station hall, visitors arriveto s large hall named “Light BlueEmptiness”: an underground darkspace that is the key interpretationelement of the work. Here, light-blue walls take visitors towardsthe light to a small hole throughwhich they can observe thesuggestive dome, wheremessages give shape and sizeto the blade. It is an acousticallyinsulated hall, where silence andlight are the main protagonists. The lighting design originatesa warm discreet atmospherethat gives way to intimatecommemoration.

The messages can be seen throughthe glass layer during the day andassume a different shape at night, when 12 ColourWoody floodlightsinstalled between the materialshighlight the words written onETFE. The luminaires generatewhite light with variable colourtemperature from warm white tocold white according to the timeof the day. Through the semi-transparent surfaces, the memorialis lit outwards, with the shades andreflections created by glass andETFE, and becomes a sort of hugecandle lit in the middle of the night.

The Beaubourg cultural centre wascompleted in Paris in 1977 andis undoubtedly one of the majorworks of modern architecture. The initially High-Tech buildingwas ironically referred to as "the refinery", however as timewent by, it became one offavourite meeting points in Paris.Every year it counts highernumbers of visitors comparedto the other monuments andbuildings of the city.

The level of lighting on ground levelis equal to 150/170 lux spreadevenly all over the forum (valueson ground level, given that theforum is 12 metres high).General lighting is entrusted to aluminaire specially designed forthe Beaubourg that is situatedaccording to a regular layout andthat reminds one, thanks to itsshape, of the numerous tubeswhich make up the maincharacteristic features of thebuilding and that help create the

typical atmosphere of an industrialstructure In order to realise RenzoPiano's project, some brand newtypes of luminaires had to bedeveloped: suspended elementsthat soar light and free in theenvironment, loaded with a thrustrecalling the flight of birds, withoutdesecrating the architecture of thebuilding. Moreover, they are asource of visual comfort, theireffects being similar to that ofa filigree piece of furniture.“Le Perroquet” - the parrot - was born”.

The “Knowing the Shape” project, born from the collaborationbetween iGuzzini and the CentralInstitute for Restoration, saw itsfirst edition in 2006 in Milan, andthen travelled to Paris in 2007.Conceived to identify one or moremethodologies of analysis andlighting design and give museumand exhibition curators a higherawareness when lighting up asculpture, the project intended toexplore new perceptive modalitiesbeyond light and sight. The project developed in twodirections, “Shapes to see” and“Shapes to touch”, in which amodel of an artwork was first“read” by some personalities andthen made available to be touchedand perceived also by the blind.

The Milan event saw theparticipation of the journalist andnovelist Vincenzo Cerami, the artcritic and design historian GilloDorfles, the director of the ItalianAssociation for the Prevention ofBlindness Angelo Mombelli and thearchaeologist Paolo Moreno, whowere asked to illuminate a perfectcopy of the "Dancing Satyr"according to their own personalinterpretation. In 2007, in Paris, during an exhibition dedicated toPraxiteles, the Greek sculptor whois the alleged author of the Satyr, theLouvre Museum asked for iGuzzini'scollaboration to stage the exhibition. As in Milan, three French famouspersonalities were called to give theirown interpretation of the statue: thehead of the Department of Greek,

Etruscan and Latin Antiquities ofthe Louvre Museum, Alain Pasquier, the curator of the same department,M. Jean-Luc Martinez and thepartially sighted opera singerAgnès Robert. In her opinion, theuse of colour permitted to identify a new vision of the sculpture and a new perception of volumes, especially for partially sightedvisitors. To minimise the visualimpact iGuzzini created a blacklacquered wood stage and whitefabric wings backlit with RGBfluorescence that changed colouraccording to the scene designof the individual interpreters. Tecnicaspotlights illuminated details andoriginated personalised lightingdirections through the use of theScene Equalizer control system.

The Maison Européenne de laPhotographie (Mep) presents acomplex art installation dedicatedto photography and light: “Words” by Alfredo Pirri. Organised in collaboration withthe Adnkronos press agency andiGuzzini, who supplied lightingconsultancy services and products, the installation is a great homenageto photography in its ethimologicalmeaning of “writing of light”.

Light animates the creation with three Sivra modules withbiodynamic light installed in frontof the observer to back-lit thework, creating a large window. The power and colour temperatureof the light change irregularlyaccording to the spirit of thenews sent every day byAdnkronos to the Mep.Here an invisible terminal filtersthe information through analgorithm that extracts a pair ofvalues from a list of 100 words,50 for power and 50 for colourtemperature, in real time.

The headlines of the news broadcast onthe net by Adnkronos pass on a smallmonitor near the installation. For each of the news, two key words -either positive or negative ones - arehighlighted and used to set the powerand colour temperature of the light.

On 21 November 2006 the mainItalian government authorities tookpart in the inauguration of the newTriennale spaces, a new centrefor contemporary living. As the architect Pierluigi Cerrihas himself stated, the Bovisainstallation does not comeunder the typical definitionof "architecture".Cerri has come up with a big whiteparallelepiped covered in PVC,conceiving it as a temporarystructure, though in the senseof a structure catering to the

needs of an area in the throesof transformation. More exactly, the space is conceived as astructure able to communicateor amplify the events organisedwithin its compass: iGuzziniis among the project partners, having provided both theinternal and external lighting.Around one thousand track-mounted Le Perroquet spotlightsare used to light the indoorexhibition space, which can beadapted to host different typesof performances.

The Exhibition Palace built between1880 and 1883 has always beena unique building in Rome.Born to exalt the city's culturalvocation with exhibitions andevents, it was characterisedby total symmetry on all axes, with impressive style anddecoration that disorientatedvisitors with confusing layouts and unclear visit routes. The five-year renovation projectstarted in 2003 to update thefacilities in functional andtechnological terms, combiningthe monumental architecturewith innovation elements.

Today the Palace covers over12,000 m2 on three storeyswith maximum design flexibility. The large central hall is thepowerful heart of the building:a double-height hall with a largecentral eye that allows daylightto penetrate without controlfrom above. The lighting system was a keypoint of the recent restructuringworks and includes a series ofsuspended long and thin ceilingsthat house the lighting fixturescreated in close collaborationwith De Lucchi, as well technicalequipment for the exhibitions.

Suspended motorised panels withadjustable height were created tohouse tracks with Tecnica spotlightsalong the sides of the panels andThe Reflex downlighters in thecentre. Paul Andreu and the lightingdesigner Kaoru Mende to createa magic atmosphere of light. Two types of fittings - Le Perroquetspotlights and recessed Light UpWalk Professional - were used toilluminate the common areas andthe foyer, which stands out at nightfrom the transparent buildingtowards the urban landscape.Le Perroquet with anti-glare screenare installed along the upper edgeof the external perimeter of thebuildings, ensuring excellentperformance and maximum visualcomfort. A carefully studied lightingdesign was developed for thesurface of the large dome divided

in 4 horizontal levels. The lowestlevel in the back of the theatreand concert hall is illuminated withrecessed Light Up Walk professionalwith wall washer optic thatguarantee perfect light on the walls, enphatising the colour and warmthof the wood. The other levels of thevault are lit with Le Perroquet withspot and flood optic installed at twodifferent heights and aimed in sucha way to create decrerasing colourshades and tones on the woodensurfaces. Finally, Zoom mini spotsare used for the artworks exhibitedin the corridors.

In the brand new Oriental ArtCentre of Shanghai in the Pu Dongdistrict of Shanghai completedin December 2004. the Parisianarchitect Paul Andreu has created,in his own words, “a radiant andtransparent building, as if bymagic.” The orchid-shapedShanghai Oriental Arts Centrecovers an area of some 23,350square metres. Surrounded by alarge park, it is one of the largestand best known projects built inShanghai, if not in the wholeof Asia, in the past two years. It is a public cultural buildingfunded by the City of Shanghai.

The complex accommodates threeauditoriums: a 1,979-seat concerthall, a theatre with seating for1,054 people and an auditoriumfor chamber music, with a capacityof 330. It also accommodatesannexed public structures, suchas an exhibition hall, music shops,a restaurant, an art library and amultimedia and training centre.Paul Andreu wanted this "meltingpot" of music and theatre to havea strong visual impact, especiallyin the evening, when the audiencesare inside. He also wanted to conveya sense of mystery, without creatinga closed or heavy structure.

To create this sense of light,Paul Andreu used Gem luminairesin all entrances to common areas,in shopping areas and sidecorridors, that can be seen fromthe outside. In order to install theGem luminaires at a variety oflevels the length of the suspensioncables was modified.

Light has always had a fundamentalrole. And it's on light that iGuzzini hasfounded its corporate identity anddeveloped its research. Either naturalor artificial, light is part of our life andaffects our biological rhythms anddaily activities. Over the years iGuzzinihas carried out an intense researchprogramme that has LED to thedevelopment of lighting managementsystems to take full advantage ofcorrect lighting.Back in 1988 the investigationstarted with Sivra;, in collaborationwith Spazio S.a.S of Milan, theNational Research Institute, the

Lighting Research Center of theRensselaer Polytechnic Instituteof Troy and Futuro of Florence. The project demonstrated theimportance of correct lightingmanagement in work activities.Originally developed as a solution toproblems encountered in enclosedsettings, Sivra (Variable LightingSystem with Automatic Regulation)showed that the use of light canstimulate the human body, improveconcentration and productivity skills.Sivra is the first concrete result of theinvestigation, which has continueduninterrupted since then.

Sivra laboratory

Dynamic light automaticallychanges light levels and colourtemperature.

Natural light, in its daily rhythm, can be considered life’s very clock, producing scientifically measuredpsychological and biological effectson human beings. The iGuzzinibiodynamic lighting systemsreproduce, in areas where they areinstalled, Bright Light and dynamic light.Bright Light is light that is, by virtueof very intense lighting (over 2500lux), able to augment the productionof hormones in our bodies duringthe hours we are awake. The desire to sleep will diminish, making us more active and receptiveto external stimuli, positivelyinfluencing our mental statesand improving our mood withoutproducing stress.

Dynamic light, changes lightinglevels and colour temperatures. It increases the stimulating capabilityof the space and it keeps our mindsactive. This is an important issue ifyou consider that today the majorityof work spaces are not the slighteststimulating. Dynamic light alsocreates a temporary dimension justlike sunlight, giving us a chronologicalmeasurement of time.

Art enriches the soul andpromotes Culture. The many places where art isprotagonist have traditionally beenat the centre of iGuzzini's attention,as proved by the collection of projectsillustrated in this catalogue. Museums and exhibitions areasoperate to favour artistic and culturaldevelopment. Both permanent andtemporary exhibitions collect andpreserve artworks that are exhibitedto the public to communicate theirhistory and meaning. In this approach, light plays afundamental role: it allows for bestenjoyment, exalts the expressivepotential of artworks and exhibitionsettings, valorises and protects theexhibits while respecting their originalspirit and ensuring their preservation.
