Big Idea: Fantasy VS. Reality

• Grade level: Third

• Estimated time: Hour and twenty minutes

Objective

• Using fantasy verse reality, students will be able to make connections between the fantasy of making wishes and reality of real life meaningful wishes. By doing so, children will understand how they can be agents of their own possibilities.

Materials: • Scissors• Markers• Crayons• Poster board• Cut out of fairy god mother• Pencil• Eraser

Resources:• Picture of Cinderella’s fairy godmother• Cinderella Movie• Vocabulary – materialistic– Purposeful/Meaningful– Wishes

Procedures:

• The artist’s images give you a sense of freedom and creativity.

• Opening a door to your secret, magical world to create meaningful wishes, allowing you to explore possibilities.

•This is an exhibit and is created by real life wishes people made.•Good Example to show that wishes can be related with real life. •Take a wish out put a wish in. Put it around your wrist and when it falls off your wish will be granted.

• I will tell students we will be discussing Cinderella and making an art project with her godmother and creating wishes.

• Review the understanding of the three wishes Cinderella gets from her fairy godmother.

• Give definitions of materialistic and meaningful.– State some items and ask if they are materialistic

or meaningful. • Talk about meaningful categories that the

children can relate to:– Family– School– Friends

• Describe the art project to class.• Show my godmother as an example-

Students may not copy.• Guided activity:– Chart on the board examples of materialistic and

non materialistic items.– Each student will name one topic that is meaningful

to them (checking for understanding).– As students are creating their wishes I will walk

around the room.

• Make art project!• Students then will present their fairy

godmothers and explain their wishes to the class.

• Then hang all the fairy godmothers up in the classroom.

• Evaluation: Informal: I will check for understanding by asking questions as well as walking around while the students are coming up with their three wishes.

Modifications:

• Already have godmother cut out for students that may have difficulty cutting.
