Art Lesson for Kindergarten and 1st Grade Objective:

• The student will be able to understand the style of Pop Art by drawing a cat, inspired by the artist, Romero Britto. cat with this Pop Art style tutorial. It’s all about drawing with lots of bright colors and patterns.

• The student will be able to demonstrate their understanding of pattern and color by creating brightly colored patterns on their cat.

Standards: 11.1.2.D.1, 1.3.2.D.1, 1.3.2.D.3, 1.3.2.D.4, 1.3.2.D.5, 1.3.2.D.2, 1.4.2.B.1 Materials Needed:

• White Paper (any kind) • Pencil and eraser • Black crayon or black marker • Coloring utensils (paint, colored pencils, crayons, markers, etc.)

Time: 40 minutes for 2 days Accommodations/Modifications:

• Extended time: students do not have to finish the art lesson in 2 40-minute blocks; they have 2 full weeks to complete the lesson at their own pace

• Assessment checklist: the assessment aspect of the lesson is in a checklist format with questions; the students can use this checklist to ensure they are completing the entire task that was asked of them

• Written and visual aides: the directions are written out in a step by step format and they are accompanied with visual aides

Directions: • Day 1: Watch a video about Pop Art, an art movement that is fun, colorful, and includes

pop culture. Watch the videos about the artist, Romero Britto. What are some things you notice about Romero Britto’s paintings? Use the Britto Cat Drawing Guide and follow steps 1-7 on any available paper. You can fold your paper into four squares. Use pencil, crayon, or marker in order to follow each step using lines to create your cat. Make sure you fill the page.

• Day 2: Watch the video on pattern. Remember to add color and pattern just like Romero Britto onto your cat. Make sure you have patterns all over your paper and use really bright colors throughout your work. Don’t forget to color the background or the space

around your cat! You can use anything to color with such as, markers, crayons, colored pencils, watercolors, paints, etc.

• Did the student follow directions when drawing their cat? • Did the student use bright colors and crazy patterns when adding detail? • Did the student color neatly?
