COURSE OUTLINE: WEEK I: Introduction, course overview, introduction Exercise lecture: Space, Form, Expression, visual awareness, figure ground relationships pencil control and mark making WEEK 2: Contour Drawing, blind contour, modified contour, Cross contour exploring space, line networking WEEK3: Scale, proportion, analytical drawing, negative/positive relationships WEEK4: cont. Still life, analytical drawing, compositional issues, placement, proportion, measurement, sighting. WEEK 5: Value scale, patterning of light and dark, middle ground, background, foreground, depth. Still life WEEK7: Landscape Value study Perspective: 1 pt. boxes in the third dimension at different eye levels, cylinders, interior room: measurement/proportion, including objects, windows and door placement. Gridding scale with scientific proportion.

WEEK 8: 2 Pt. Perspective, boxes, exterior building. WEEK 9: IDS PROJECT/ individual research and materials. WEEK 10: Matting/Framing demo, finish individual projects WEEK 11: 3 Pt perspective, invented landscape with value control WEEK 12: Isometric Drawing/Orthogonal Drawing/ Observation and development WEEK 13: Measurements of the Portrait/ Planar analysis of the face/ stylistic studies (research) WEEK 14: Self Portraits WEEK 15: Final Exam

V. PROCEDURE

This course meets three days a week for 15 weeks. Each class session is a two-hour studio. The studio will be used for lecture, class critiques, demonstrations, and laboratory experience.

VI. POLICY REGARDING CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE NO cell phones, NO IPOD or ear buds allowed in studio sessions. Cell phones MUST be

turned off during class times. Tardiness will NOT be tolerated. If an absence occurs, students must acquire notes for classmates before approaching instructor.

VII. EVALUATION

A. Regular attendance of class, classroom etiquette. (5 points) B. Participation in class critiques, both written and oral. (25 points) C. Improvement based on technical skill. (10 points) D. Level of progress towards course objectives. (20 points) E. Completion of assignments. (25 points) F. Quality of work. (5 points) G. Sketch Book. (10 points) * Missing a critique will immediately result in the dropping of a letter grade from your assignment. YOU MUST BE AT CRITIQUES AND PARTICIPATING IN THEM!!!!!

There are NO excused absences. The first 3 absences will not affect evaluation. 4 absences may result in the reduction of one letter grade. 5 absences may result in the reduction of two letter grades. 6 absences may result in the reduction of three letter grades. 7 absences may result in failing the course.

VIII. DIVERSITY

Students are exposed whenever possible to diverse cultures, backgrounds, and styles from around the world in regard to art and art history and how it relates to art/media. Students are required to research, create, and present an original project that synthesizes literary and visual art that reflects personal expression and background.

IX. RATIONALE

For students pursuing art certification, this course provides a strong foundation for the understanding of visual art content, aesthetics, criticism, art theory around historical and contemporary art issues, the application of art elements and principles, understanding of design and composition, creative resources for materials, supplies, and exhibitions in museums and galleries.

X. COURSE CONTRIBUTION

This course contributes to the Minor in Art and Photography, the Major in Art, the Bachelor of Fine Arts, the Creative Expression Area of the IDS program, and Teacher Certification in Art. Subject Competencies: 5, 8, 12.
