It’s all systems go for the 156th Arnprior Agri-cultural Society Fair Aug. 5 to 8 and organizers are hoping the revamped event will be one to re-member.

Agricultural Society president Jeff Desarmia says the board has some exciting news to share with the community.

Tonight’s opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. include a special announcement, says Desarmia.

“We’ll be introducing something that solidifi es the stability of the Arnprior Agricultural Society fairgrounds staying as fairgrounds,” he says.

He hopes to dispel speculation the land will be turned into a housing development, says De-sarmia, and at the same time drum up more sup-port for the event.

The recent rehabilitation of the racetrack opens up more possibilities.

“With the rebirth of our racetrack we will be bringing in and asking for participation of differ-ent groups,” says Desarmia.

He anticipates the new initiatives will re-ener-gize the fair and attract more people to get behind the event.

The fair board is pleased some service clubs and organizations continue to be involved, notes Desarmia. “And we’ve had very good renewed commitment from some suppliers and contrac-tors. They see the value of keeping this going,” he says.

Sewer plant centrifuge heading to Saskatoon for repairsContinued from front

The reports notes staff has a “high level of confi dence” Andritz can repair the machine and notes it will provide a six-month warranty on the work.

“It is staff ’s view that, all things con-sidered, the Andritz option provides the most certainty and least risk in terms of the unit being repaired …”

The machine might be damaged too signifi cantly for repairs to be ma-chined, as Badham’s is proposing, said Collins.

Badham is upset council made the decision before seeing the full proposal on how his company would tackle the

repairs. He points out he examined the damaged centrifuge July 21, a week after it broke down, at the request of town staff.

Based on that inspection, he formu-lated a detailed proposal, quoting a maximum price of $22,500. Badham’s has 29 years of experience in Arnpri-or and fi rst-hand knowledge of equip-ment at the sewage plant, he says.

However, unaware the special coun-cil meeting was scheduled for 8 a.m., his report wasn’t hand-delivered to town hall until 9:30 a.m. on that Thurs-day, he adds. By that time council had passed a resolution to enter into an

agreement with Andritz to remove, crate and ship the damaged part of the centrifuge to the company’s Saskatoon plant for repair and balancing. An-dritz will provide a cost estimate once it receives the unit.

Meanwhile, the temporary centri-fuge approved by council July 26 ar-rived July 29 and has alleviated the backlog of sludge at the plant.

Collins noted funding for the re-pairs will come from the wastewater reserve. The unexpected expenses for the repairs and leasing the temporary plant will impact the 2010 budget, she told council.

The temporary centrifuge that allowed the Arnprior sewage plant to start dewatering sludge again ar-rived last Thursday, even quicker than anticipated by staff and council. The equipment will run for at least two months while the plant’s machine is repaired.

Council shies away from banning politics on town propertyJOHN CARTER

[email protected]

Eric Burton’s campaign barbecue went ahead Saturday and Doug Smith’s adver-tising is still being run on the Think Out Loud screen at the Nick Smith Centre, after council decided against banning all political activities and messages on mu-nicipal property.

The majority of council (Mayor Terry Gibeau and Coun. Eric Burton were ab-sent) agreed at its committee-of-the-whole meeting July 26 that proposals to prohibit campaign activities in town buildings and parks is going too far. However, council-lors agreed the town’s Use of Corporate Resources for Election Purposes policy should be modifi ed to include candidates as well as sitting council members in any prohibitions already in the bylaw.

Council is expected to make a fi nal deci-sion at its Aug. 9 meeting.

Town clerk Jacquie Farrow-Lawrence recommended the bylaw be updated and made clearer after being questioned by Smith about the Nick Smith advertising and Burton about using the Robert Simp-son Park gazebo for his campaign rally. She reported municipal advisor Stephen Sellers had suggested some changes.

CAO Larry Donaldson explained coun-cil had to decide either that municipal property is no place for electioneering or that if all candidates have the same ac-cess, “what’s the problem.”

Reeve Walter Stack suggested the debate was worth having, but it is too far into the election campaign to make changes this year. Coun. Mark Willmer agreed, saying as one who has already declared he is “un-comfortable” about changing the rules.

“As long as there is no favoritism, there’s no reason that candidates shouldn’t be able to rent the hall or gazebo,” he said.

“It’s done for federal and provincial elections … and in other municipalities.”

He noted the town’s sign bylaw does a good job in restricting election advertis-ing on municipal property.

Coun. Tom Peckett suggested the ban should also extend to electronic messag-es. However, Stack maintained there is a considerable difference between the elec-tronic advertising and someone “plaster-ing signs all over a building.”

Coun. Jack Lammert expressed con-cern tightening up the bylaw too much would prevent organizations from hold-ing the traditional all-candidates nights at the Nick Smith Centre. He suggested there is no reason a candidate should be banned from renting the Robert Simpson Park gazebo or the Nick Smith Centre for a meeting as long as everyone else had the same right. “If they want to explain to people why they should be elected, good for them,” he said. “I’m concerned about over-regulation here.”

Think Out Loud advertising company owner Steve Dontigny said he was told election messages are allowed on his screens as long as there are disclaimers the opinions aren’t necessarily those of the host, whether it be the Nick Smith Centre or the Prior Sports Bar.

He said the host has the fi nal say on content, but the town’s election rules al-low campaign advertising at the Nick Smith Centre. The only place it’s banned is at town hall, he noted. He said he en-courages his advertisers to keep their messages positive and stay away from mud-slinging.

noon to 4 p.m. is free. At all other times, it is $8 for adults before 5 p.m. and $10 after 5 p.m.

EXHIBITING SUPPORT FOR THE FAIREntering exhibits in the Arnprior Fair is a labour of love for Dorothy van Leur. The Arnprior resident has persuaded her mother to join her as well as encouraging friends and neighbours to also enter exhibits. A regular fair exhibitor, she shows off some of this year’s entries, which include photographs, sewing, vegetables and antiques. She has a vari-ety of entries in the antique divisions in which items must be at least 50 years old. Among the categories this year are a coal oil lamp, depres-sion glass, kitchen utensil and farm photo, which shows her father in Holland on the farm in 1935 when he was four. Van Leur also enters several baking categories each year. Photo by John Carter

FAIR SUPPORT FOR FOOD BANKIt’s a busy time for the Arnprior Agricultural Society with the 156th fair opening tonight but that hasn’t stopped the group from working to support the community. The society recently presented a collection of food items to the Arnprior and District Food Bank. The food was collected at a recent free drive-in movie night at the fairgrounds. On hand for the presentation are, from left, AAS director Scott Rancourt, AAS director Lynn Grinstead, food bank co-coordinator Allan Smith, AAS president Jeff Desarmia and AAS director-treasurer Cathie Tennisco. Fair-goers are asked to bring food donations Thursday evening along with their $5 admission to fi ll up a pickup truck for the food bank.

Continued from frontIncluded in the changes this year is the

addition of Thursday activities to what has in the recent past been a three-day fair. “It’s the fi rst time in 15 years,” says Desarmia. At one time the fair used to be Wednesday to Sunday, he says.

The plan to re-establish Thursday is linked to the society’s need to sign a new contract with the midway company.

“We need to produce numbers through the gate,” says Desarmia.

It is hoped tonight’s Edge Motorsports extreme thrill show will boost attendance. “This is the 2010 version of the 1980s Hell Drivers,” he says. As well, a wide variety of musical entertainment is planned on the myFM stage.

Editorial Policy

To the editor:

Once again the constituents of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke have learned their Member of Parliament in the federal government has actu-ally been working against one of our most important industries in our riding, a riding in which she is being paid to represent.

The designation of the Ottawa River to Heritage status, a project in which a number of local people have put a lot of energy and time into and was, I believe, initiated by the late Len Hopkins, is actually being stone-walled by Cheryl Gallant.

This designation would no doubt mean a great deal to our tourist in-dustry, particularly in the Valley and we now fi nd out Ms. Gallant has been playing petty politics with a project that could be having a very positive effect on our local tourist industry.

This is someone who just recently was boasting in her news article how her government was playing such a tremendous role in promoting tour-ism.

In the past she has led us to believe

her to be an advocate of both this Heritage designation and the revival of the railway service to the Valley, two projects which we have come to learn have received little or no sup-port.

Her claim a provincial cabinet minister sought her assistance to lean on John Baird for his co-opera-tion in the extension of Highway 417 to the Upper Valley, her suggestion by means of a photo-op of her advising Jim Flaherty in his preparation of the recent budget, ‘her bill’ as she referred to it at times on the gun registry, her railing locally against same sex marriage and then standing with her government to maintain the ‘status quo’.

Her recent article in her commu-niqué as to how the new research lab at AECL will preserve all these jobs, when she knows full well her govern-ment is quietly preparing for the breaking up and sale of this impor-tant and world leading industry. All smoke and mirrors.

I have lived and been involved polit-ically in a number of ridings over the years, but I have never before been

exposed to a so-called member who has been so persistent and consistent in their attempts to mislead their constituents.

Of course, her only dialogue is through the newspapers where she knows she’s not open for questions or debate. This is an elected member who refuses to dialogue openly where she knows she would be unable to de-fend her reputation or her views on issues concerning her constituents.

In her most recent communiqué, she once again attempts to impact people with her fear tactics, extolling the inevitable dangers of the Liberal coalition with the ‘separatists’, some-thing that’s not even being consid-ered. Something her own party was involved in a short time ago when Mr. Harper tried unsuccessfully, not once but twice, to seek out a coalition with the ‘BLOC’.

It’s rather refreshing and encour-aging to know that even the ‘BLOC’ have “standards and principles” they refuse to abandon.

LETTER

It is offi cial: anyone aged 21 and under can’t have any alcohol in their system when get-ting behind the wheel.

Previously, anyone who held a full G licence could have a blood alcohol level of up to 0.05 per cent. As of Aug. 1, that number now only applies to drivers 22 and up.

Young drivers who are caught with any alcohol in their system face an immediate 24-hour sus-pension of their licence which could last up to 30 days and up to $500 in fi nes.

Kathryn Windsor of the Renfrew County Moth-ers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) branch said young people in the area have problems with alcohol because of the small town feel and the proximity to Quebec.

Youths consuming alcohol have been the cause of “a percentage of the accidents happening in this area,” said Windsor.

According to the Ontario Ministry of Trans-portation, the peak ages of drinking and driving are 19 to 21. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Manitoba already have similar regulations in place.

Some may argue that this new law is an ex-ample of ageism.

Many young drivers are responsible and would be able to handle having a glass of wine and hit-ting the road responsibly later on.

However, there are many who can’t. And that doesn’t just go for young drivers. Everyone handles their alcohol differently, depending on gender, weight/size, metabolism, etc.

Over the years, countless police reports have come across the news desk about impaired driv-ing. People of all ages, from teens to seniors, have been caught drinking and driving in Renfrew County. What about the over-21 population who can’t seem to handle their alcohol?

Drinking and driving does not seem to be going away anytime fast. It remains a reality, often end-ing up in tragedy.

Perhaps limiting youths behind the wheel is just the beginning. It may not be a bad idea to start at the 16 to 21 demographic and work up from there.

Alcohol and driving has never been a good mix.

Alcohol, driving don’t mix well at any age

To the editor:

The Town of Arnprior is play-ing politics in this year’s 2010 municipal election.

The town is required to keep the municipal elections fair and unbiased by law, yet they clearly have turned in favour of the sit-ting council.

During the second week of July, the Town of Arnprior re-moved all election candidates fax numbers, email addresses and much more contact information from the town website.

As mayoral candidate for Arnprior, I have had four points of contact removed that were posted for several months at http://www.arnprior.ca/candi-dates2010.htm.

Back in January when I regis-tered for the upcoming election a critic said – “it’s ridiculous to be campaigning so soon”. Well.. now time is running out and the election is heading into the fi -nals. Here is what I have been doing for the past 6 months. I have spoken to many, many indi-viduals since the New Year started out. The public wants changes in the leadership and those who are successfully appointed to Arn-prior Council.

While speaking with many of our residents, I fi nd that similar viewpoints are being thrown back at me on a regular basis. Such things as opening the door to Box Stores, keep a strong hand on the taxes, and be a vis-ible representative to the com-munity.

With the infl ux of new retail activity around our perimeter, I believe that there will be more

confi dence in business expan-sion in our downtown core, and that in turn, will rejuvenate our retail package as more retail outlets open up providing new employment opportunities.

As one of your elected Arn-prior councilors, I pledge to

work diligently to encourage new and benefi -cial growth and be accountable to the citizens of Arnprior. I also pledge to be open to dialog on views of all citizens. I ask for

your support on October 25, 2010

and elect me as one of your councilors.

From Page 8benefi t of having their following phone numbers listed on the town website: home phone number, work number, cell number, business number and personal email addresses that are no longer per-mitted to the new election candidates in Arnprior.

Limiting the contact information for candidates several months into the election campaign is biased towards the sitting council and also puts up barriers to the deaf voters of Arnprior who no longer have our fax or email information.

People have asked me, “why so upset over an email address?” My answer is simple, yet very personal to me. I left my family to go fi ght in the fi rst Gulf War for the freedom of the Kuwaiti people. Not one Canadian lost their life in this war, but we were all pre-pared to do so.

When I see our own municipal government put up barriers to the deaf or any other group of

people in a free and democratic society, I have to stand up on their behalf and say no!

Our entire town council should hang their heads in shame for the Town of Arnprior putting up barriers to the deaf in this democratic election.

The residents of Arnprior are some of the most friendly and welcoming people my wife and I have met from around the world, yet our own municipal government does not like to be more transpar-ent or unbiased.

What are they afraid of ? Will anyone on council stand up and defend the rights of new candidates or the deaf ? Is anyone on the Arnprior council listen-ing?

I believe that removing candidate contact information and putting up this barrier to the deaf, is a clear violation

of the Ontarians with Disability Act and Arnprior’s own Accessibility Act. http://www.arnprior.ca/accessibility.htm.

Let’s provide more access and trans-parency, not less.

Don’t miss

amazing quilts

To the edi-tor:

I visited the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum and saw one of the most beauti-ful displays of quilts – ever.

Turns out they are the works of the Almonte Crazy Quilters. A col-lection of their work over the past 10 years - more than 100 items.

What a tal-ented group!

It will be there until the end of August – don’t miss it. You will be amazed.

Nature’s Way

It amuses me when someone goes for a walk in the woods and reports that there weren’t any animals.

What they meant was they saw no large animals, for if they had looked properly they would have seen hundreds, possibly thousands of creatures and their signs.

All one has to do is look at leaves to see abundant evidence of living things. Large holes reveal the work of caterpillars, which might be found resting on the shady underside of the leaf. Some caterpillars are specifi c to only one type of plant but most eat a wide variety.

More obvious are leaves that have been completely eaten to their main vein. If you have a Mountain Ash you likely met Moun-tain Ash Sawfl y larvae, caterpillar-like creatures that are yellow with black spots.

Sawfl ies are wasp relatives and their larvae have more than fi ve pairs of prolegs, those suction pads lo-cated under the middle of the body (true cat-erpillars bear fi ve at most). When numer-ous, Sawfl y lar-vae can defoli-ate entire trees.

Other strip-pers eat only the leaf ’s surface material and are called skel-etonizers. Some skeletoniz ers start off as min-ers, chewing narrow paths in the leaves. Oth-er caterpillars remain miners their entire cat-erpillar lives, creating distinc-tive patterns as they dine.

Maple Leaf-blotch Miners create large blotches on - you guessed it - maple leaves.

If you hold a blotched leaf to the sky, you might see inside the blotch the tiny caterpillar along with all its droppings.

My favourite is the Poplar

Serpentine Miner, which carves beautiful mean-dering patterns in poplar leaves. Other types of Min-ers create similar patterns in the leaves of Colum-bines and Asters.

Some signs of activity are easily overlooked, but once identifi ed they are found to be extremely com-mon. These are leaves that have been rolled into tubes or tied together with silk. Leaf Rollers, Leaf Tiers, and Leaf Folders are cat-erpillars named after the way they deal with leaves.

Tiers differ from Fold-ers in that Folders fold a leaf neatly in half so that the outer edges meet while Tiers bind sections of leaves or attach several leaves together.

All of these caterpillars live and feed inside their structures. If you unroll a folded-up leaf you often fi nd its tiny architect in-side.

However, instead of a

caterpillar sometimes someone else is at home.

Sac Spiders also fold leaves to create chambers in which they guard their eggs and babies.

Regardless of maker, it amazes me that such tiny animals are behind these great architectural feats.

The list of animals liv-ing on leaves contains beetles and mites. An ex-cellent book for identify-ing leaf eaters is Insects of Eastern Hardwood Trees (by Rose and Lindquist), published by Natural Re-sources Canada.

One need not travel far to encounter these remark-able animals that live on leaves.

When one’s eyes are opened to their signs, one soon sees that there are worlds within worlds, life without limit.

The following article was submitted by Arnprior resident Doug Scheels and print-ed with the permission of the Eganville Leader.

One hundred years ago, in mid-July, three men were killed at Sand Point in a fatal explosion in a powder factory.

The dead were Earl Murphy, 13, of Arn-prior and Frank Pittner, 37, and John Hewart, 30, explosives experts from Phila-delphia.

The injured were David Lynn of Sand Point, his son Edward Lynn, Charles Thomas of Sand Point, Thos. Mullett of Carleton Place, John Chatterton of Sand Point, W. Bradley of Perth and Supt. Matchett of Ottawa.

The story is datelined Arnprior July 11.

“With a roar that was heard and a shock that was felt for miles around, the factory of the Dominion Explosives Company blew up this morning shortly before 11 o’clock. It was located at Sand Point, fi ve miles west of this town, and a few min-utes after the explosion a telephone call was sent in for help.

“All the doctors in Arnprior hurried to the scene of the disaster. The factory had taken fi re and there was great danger of a second explosion.

“The members of the fi re brigade, how-

ever, did all they could, not only to prevent the spread of the fl ames but to rescue the injured.

“They succeeded in preventing the fl ames from reaching the magazine in which, it is stated, a very large quantity of the company’s stock of explosive is stored.

“There were many lucky escapes. J. Potter, the engineer, had just gone to the well to draw a pail of water when the ex-plosion occurred, and while debris fell all around him, he was unhurt.

“James Goth, another employee of the cartridge department, was rolling car-tridges when the building exploded, and escaped without a scratch.

“The men who escaped can give no reason for the disaster. The explosive the company makes is called the “blaster’s friend” and was believed to be particu-larly safe.

“Mr. Henry G. Nicoll of New York, pres-ident of the company, reached Amprior tonight and will tomorrow, in company with Superintendent Sachette, who was slightly injured, visit the wreck of the factory. He will make no statement until after his visit.

“The remains of Pittner and Hewart were found this afternoon, but there is no trace of Murphy’s body. Young Lynn, whose condition is critical, was engaged

Three killed in Sand Point explosion 100 years agorolling cartridges when the explosion occurred. He was covered with fl ying de-bris, his skull being fractured. The three people killed had just gone into the dry-ing and mixing room when the explosion occurred.

“Pittner and Hewart were experts who had come from Philadelphia to work in

the mills. Hewart was unmarried, but Pittner is survived by a widow and two children, who live at Arnprior.

“The fi re which broke out subsequent to the explosion continued to burn in the bush around the factory until the evening when it was fi nally got under control by the Amprior fi re brigade.”

Exempt poppy salesArnprior council has support-

ed a resolution asking the federal government to consider exempt-ing the sale of poppies and poppy wreaths from the GST and/or the HST. The motion, being circu-lated by Head, Clara and Maria Township, notes it would increase revenue for the Legion’s veterans support programs.

Wags and Whiskers

The companion dog sitting on your lap or playing in your yard has come a long way: over 15,000 years of evolution and man’s quest to domesticate the Grey Wolf into what we have come to know as the dog.

The term Dog is for a male that has no puppies to his name. The term Bitch is a female dog that has never had any puppies. The term Sire is for a male dog that has bred a litter of puppies and Dame is for a female dog that has had a litter of puppies.

According to DNA, the com-panion animal may date back as far as 15,000 to 17,000 years. They were companions, provid-ers and protectors for European families

What happened was actually quite fascinating. Unlike today, garbage collection did not exist and so man dumped garbage in piles away from the city and, of course, the wolves would come down from the forest and rum-mage through the garbage.

The wolves that were more fearful would simply head back to the forest to hunt for food. Those more brave would hang around and live amongst the humans until one day man and beast became more trusting of one another.

Through the course of evo-lution, the Grey Wolf that be-friended man started to change. Since man was now in control of how they live, eat and survive, they no longer needed a massive jaw with huge canines to rip apart prey, a thick coat to keep themselves warm at night, or to be ferocious, just to name a few traits. The wolf was now evolv-ing into a semi-domesticated animal.

When the Europeans left for Australia, they brought along

their faithful companions that we now know as the Australian Dingo. The Dingo is the only di-rect link between the Grey Wolf and the dog in your home.

So what happened next was man’s desire to create an animal that best suited his needs.

All the traits we see today are man-made. For example, certain

breeds were created to see and smell prey helping man hunt, larger dogs were bred with ag-gression to protect man and small dogs were bred to hunt rodents for the farmers in Eng-land. All the traits we see today like barking, lap sitting, lick-ing, fetching, etc. were all man’s creations. Wolves did not posses any of those traits.

Even today, we can take any breed and make changes or even

create a new species in just sev-en generations of puppies.

Research shows that the com-panionship of a dog can enhance human physical health and psy-chological well-being. Dog own-ers have been shown to have bet-ter mental and physical health than non-owners, making fewer visits to the doctor and being less likely to be on medication than non-own-ers.

So the next time you hug your companion animal, remember that the unconditional love you have been given dates back al-most 17,000 years.

Do you have “Anger” Issues?Anger management can be quite the challenge for you and of course

for your family to deal with. We will treat you for the symptoms, help your body let go of this anger and will provide all the tools you

need to convert your anger into love and creativity! Try it…

Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski says people are angry, and right-ly so.

“That’s because they’ve just been hit with a new tax that further erodes their ability to make ends meet.

“And even though the government has fi -nally bowed to opposition pressure, and is removing the Eco-Tax for now, it’s clear they still intend to come back with something else,” he says. “They say they want to ‘re-tool’ it, when actually, at least

to me, they just need more time to come up with a better way to ‘re-fool’ us,” he says

People angry with eco tax: MPP John YakabuskiRiver stand defended

JOHN CARTER

Giving the Ottawa River heri-tage status without involving Quebec would “send a wrong message to our neighbours,” says Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant.

Gallant also suggests there “may be other issues that need to be resolved that have yet to be adequately addressed,” before she endorses the heritage desig-nation application. Gallant made the comments in a letter to Ren-frew County council, explaining why she has not yet supported the designation request.

County council passed a reso-lution in June urging the prime minister to force Gallant to of-fi cially support the designation application.

It has been speculated by some observers that Gallant is with-holding her support because the campaign was initiated by the riding’s former Liberal MP Len Hopkins. It was also suggested Gallant is opposing the effort be-cause she fears the designation might affect property rights.

In her letter dated July 22, Gal-lant said she is responding to “ru-mours and misrepresentations stated both inside and outside county council chamber before and since (the motion)” and sug-gest councillors “take the time to gather all the facts before passing judgment.”

Gallant maintains the request is “unprecedented” because the application has been changed to only include the Ontario side of the river.

“Designating half the river is half the job,” she said. “I would hope that county councillors would want the heritage designa-tion of the Ottawa River to unite our two provinces, not divide us.”

Gallant wrote that it is her job to consider all the implications, national as well as local, that come with recognizing the his-torical signifi cance of the Ottawa River.

“If this designation goes through where only half the Otta-wa River is so recognized, we will have lost a great opportunity in nation-building. Let’s get it right the fi rst time.”

Event Starts Today!

Liberal corn roast to feature local food, entertainmentSeveral party MPs and candidates will

join federal leader Michael Ignatieff at a Liberal corn roast near Pembroke Mon-day, Aug. 9.

The visit of the Liberal Express sum-mer tour, which is open to the public, will also feature local entertainment by the Jamieson family.

“We plan to feature locally grown corn at the corn roast, and I am also looking

forward to welcoming members of the Jamieson family, including Guy and Rob Jamieson, to perform at the event and provide homegrown entertainment,” said Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke fed-eral candidate Christine Tabbert. “Mr. Ig-natieff is looking forward to being here.”

Tabbert said Zsuzsanna Zsohar, Ignati-eff ’s wife, will also be at the roast at her family’s farm.

“We are looking forward to showing ev-eryone on the Liberal Express, including Mr. Ignatieff, Zsuzsanna and other MPs from elsewhere in Ontario and Canada a good old-fashioned Ottawa Valley wel-come when they arrive on Aug. 9,” Tab-bert said.

The Liberal Express is travelling across Canada this summer, visiting every prov-ince and territory, “to show Canadians

the clear Liberal alternative to the cur-rent Conservative government.”

The Liberal Express Summer Tour Corn Roast will be held at Sunny Hill-crest Farm at 1355 Forest Lea Rd. In Lau-rentian Valley from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Tickets cost $10 (children 12 and under free).

Where has the summer gone?Already, it’s only two weeks before the

2010-11 edition of the Arnprior Packers takes to the ice to open training camp.

Camp gets underway Sunday, Aug. 22 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Nick Smith Cen-tre. A full training camp schedule will be provided upon registration.

Players are asked to show up for regis-tration at 6:30 p.m.

The $100 cost to tryout guarantees a player two exhibition games and four in-tersquad games.

Coach and general manager Bill Gri-ese also has a couple of preseason home games scheduled: Friday, Sept. 3 versus

the Stittsville Royals, and Sunday, Sept. 12 when the Pontiac Juniors come to town.

The Packers open regular-season play with a pair of games against Rideau-St. Lawrence Conference teams during the inaugural Eastern Ontario Junior Hock-ey League Fall Classic. The showcase fea-tures all 22 of the league’s teams at the Bell Sensplex in Ottawa Sept. 18 and 19.

The club then travels to Renfrew for a Sept. 24 encounter.

Arnprior’s fi rst offi cial home game of 2010-11 is Friday, Oct. 1 when they take on the Almonte Thunder at the Nick Smith Centre.

For further information or questions on the Packers training camp, contact [email protected].

Arnprior’s Allen McGee withstood the challenges of all comers, most notably Dwight Reinhart of the Renfrew Golf Club, to capture the Ottawa Citizen Ama-teur Golf Championship last Thursday at the Marches in Ottawa.

A three-time Ottawa City and District Championship, McGee took a seven-stroke lead into the fi nal day of the four-round event.

Reinhart cut the defi cit to four shots midway through the fi nal round, but the

Arnprior Golf Club member refused to fall to the pressure.

A 5-over-par 77 clinched the Citizen title, which also included rounds at Eagle Creek, Loch March and the Kanata Golf and Country Club.

The lead was only a single shot through two rounds, before McGee manufactured a 70 in the third round while Reinhart settled on a 76.

McGee’s fi nal 291 total featured rounds of 75-69-70-77 while Reinhart fi nished four shots back.

McGee said it was great to have his wife Tarra, daughter Zoe and son Hunter

by his side. “They are the ones who sup-port me, so for them to actually be here was great,” he said.

Hunter, 9, caddied during the fi nal round for his dad.

McGee said he’d be back to defend his title next year, adding he loves the for-mat.

The Arnprior Golf Club also had a sec-ond quality performance on the men’s side with Chris Bernard registering rounds of 77-71-76-73 for a 297 total to fi n-ish in third place.

The tournament opened with 136 play-ers competing, of which 72 qualifi ed

through the second-round cut, while the best 36 scores advanced to the fi nal ses-sion.

Arnprior’s Christine Lafortune turned in a solid performance in the women’s Citizen championship.

Lafortune posted a 327, consisting of rounds of 78-85-78-86 over the four days to fi nish alone in 12th place.

Faye Patrois of Mountain Creek also reached the fi nal day of competition and placed 33rd with a fi nal count of 362.

Lise Jubinville of Carleton, at 304, cap-tured the ladies crown by seven shots over Rivermead’s Louise Hotte.

Derrick Schubrink, centre, of White Lake captured the two top prizes in the Ottawa River Catfi sh Clas-sic, earning him $1,500. Present-ing him with his prize Saturday at a wind-up cele-bration at the Pri-or Sports Bar are Terry and Kaelea Runtz of Towey’s Bayt and Tackle, main sponsors of the event. For more, see Page 21. National medals for local Special OlympiansSHERRY HAAIMA

[email protected]

The hard work and dedication of two local Special Olympians has paid off in a big way on the national scene.

Greg Murdoch of Arnprior and Kris Gorr of Lapasse came away from the National Special Olympics in London, Ont., with an impressive medal

count and memories that will last a lifetime.

Arnprior Redfi sh special Olympics Coaches Barbara Cosman and Jane Dowd couldn’t be more proud of the young men.

Cosman said traveling to London to be part of the July 11 to 17 games with her swimmers was a great experience. “Both of the athletes had a tremendous performance,” says Cosman. “They swam their hearts out and it

was evident in the team’s medal standings.”

Murdoch picked up a slew of medals, including: gold – 4 x 25m relay, gold – 100m breaststroke, gold – 50m butterfl y, gold – 100m back crawl, bronze – 200m individual medley, bronze – 200M breaststroke, fi fth place – 200m freestyle (personal best time).

Gorr had an impressive medal haul as well, including: gold – 50m freestyle, bronze – 200m freestyle, fourth place – 50m back crawl (personal best time), fourth place – 50m breaststroke (personal best time).

This is the fi rst time the club has had any athletes qualify for the nationals, says Cosman.

Now, athletes will be chosen to represent Team Canada at the World Games in Greece in 2011 so it’s possible Murdoch or

Gorr will have the chance to attend and compete, which is exciting, says Cosman. Dowd credited the athletes for their dedication to swimming.

“Both of them trained all winter,” she explains. Then, starting in March the training was kicked up a notch and the boys began regular sessions alongside Arnprior’s Grayfi sh Masters swim club.

“They worked very hard,” says Dowd.

Both coaches expressed their thanks for the support from the Grayfi sh. Murdoch is considering joining the club this fall.

The 18-year-old is taking his success in stride.

“It was good,” he says with a modest smile. “The best part was getting the medals.”

He said he was happy to represent Arnprior and do his best.

Murdoch has been swimming as part of a club since he was eight years old.

He says he enjoys it very much and has made many special friends over the years.

Kris Gorr, left, and Greg Murdoch proudly pose with their medals in London.

Please find me a homeEach week we feature animals from the Arnprior and District Humane Society that are up

for adoption.

#3759 MosesMoses, a fi ve-year-old neutered male, will make

a wonderful companion. He was abandoned in the country and thankfully someone found him and brought him to the shelter. He was in terrible shape - very thin and badly matted - but he is now healthyand ready to fi nd a good home. Moses is a very friendly cat. He likes attention but isn’t demanding. Moses is a large cat with an easygoing personality. He is quiet, gentle and good with other cats.

3739 LionelThere’s never a boring moment with Lionel around. He is a two-year-old neutered male who was given up by his owner who was no longer able to care for him. Lionel is an active, energetic cat who he is very curious and likes to explore and play. He is sure to keep his new owners on their toes. He is friendly and gets affectionate when he is all tired out. He is good with other cats and dogs.

Supplies the shelter needs; Whiskas Meaty selections dry cat food, paper towels, bleach and canned cat food.

AUGUST BOTTLE DRIVE:Empties Can Fill Bellies fundraising event. Drop your beer, wine and liquor empties at the shelter 490 Didak Dr., Arnprior, and you’ll be helping all the animals in our care. Proceeds help with expenses such as vaccinations, veterinary care, spay and neuter surgery.

That’s how best to honour the memory of Hop-kins, Gallant said, denying she opposes the desig-nation because he originated the effort.

“In regards to some of the unfortunate com-ments attributed to the chair of the Ottawa River Heritage designation committee, I remind county council that former heritage committee chair Leonard Hopkins had retired years prior to my running for elected offi ce. He was never a politi-cal rival.

“For the record, I was honoured to nominate Mr. Hopkins for the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2003 in the absence of recognition from his own party for his long years of service,” she wrote, includ-ing a photograph of her presenting the medal to the long-time Liberal MP.

She says she provided Hopkins with a letter of support early in the campaign, but respecting his committee’s independence, took a “hands-off ” ap-proach to his efforts.

Because the request was changed some time from 2006 to 2008 to include only where the river makes up the provincial boundary instead of its full length, and only the Ontario side, the stake-holders should be consulted again before any fi -nal decision is made, Gallant wrote.

Consult stakeholders: MP Pakenham Fair: local fl avourThe Pakenham Fair is the place to go this Aug.

14 to buy and visit with local growers, producers and vendors and explore local fl avours.

“This year’s Pakenham Fair revolves around the theme of local food,” explains Nicole Guthrie, Mississippi Mills community cultural program-mer.

“We want to encourage more of our residents to eat locally produced and grown food, and feel the fair is a great way to introduce the concept and highlight producers.”

The plan is to turn the parking lot of the Stewart Community Centre into a local market. Vendors will be selling locally harvested meat, cheese, eggs, honey, syrup, vegetables, herbs and just about anything else you can imagine.

A host of producers will be on site to educate you and help put local food on your dinner table.

The fair will also have its traditional horse, beef, dairy and horticulture shows as well as some children’s activities, a petting zoo and eats at the outdoor canteen.

The fair booklet is available on the Mississippi Mills website at www.mississippimills.ca and will be available at local stores and libraries.

For more information or to get involved call Ben or Helen at 613-256-3881 or [email protected].
