S C H O L A R S H I P S WHAT WE DO- ARLINGTON (VA) LINKS SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE.

The scholarship committee is a transformational program. We change young people’s lives. Our mission is to provide lifelong enrichment opportunities for young minds that thirst for knowledge and a desire to make a difference in the world.

We raise scholarships funds through our elegant bi-annual Monte Carlo which has a long rich history as one of DMV’s premier events and our annual Golf Tournament that our wonderful connecting Links started in 2010.

These funds support service area graduating high school students from freshmen year of college through graduation. Our service area includes Alexandria and Arlington County (which includes eight different high schools: Yorktown, Washington-Lee, Wakefield, West Potomac, Hayfield, TC Williams, Thomas Edison and Mount Vernon High Schools). We currently have ten scholarship recipients; five new freshmen recipients and five returning recipients.

Our Five New Freshmen Scholarship Recipients: Karl Green – NYU Nicholas Grant – Georgia Tech Cassandre Arkema – Reed College Zoe Broussard – Univ. of SC/Irvine Tiffanii Hawkins-Springer

Our Current Returning Scholarship Students: Morgan Lataillade – University of Virginia Miranda Jones – Norfolk State University Stephanie Dohou – William & Mary Aleta Allen – Norfolk State University Brooke Giles – University of Maryland

In December 2014 through May 2015 we graduated two of our scholarships recipients with one additional that will finish up in fall of 2015: Courtney Riley – University of Wisconsin Jamie Leah Jones – University of Virginia Shanay Campbell – Savannah State

OUR PROCESS

Our process begins with a strategic plan, the love of what we do and great communication. Our goals are intentional. Our outreach to our service area schools (counselors, teachers, minority achievement coordinators) churches, community leaders and organizations to introduce who we are, what we do and of course our scholarship opportunities are critical. The best entree into each other’s world is to understand the needs of each other – we want to help develop a community of service- minded leaders who can help shape the world. We collectively select exceptional, amazing, grounded, service-oriented young students for our scholarship opportunity.

S C H O L A R S H I P S Yesterday.

Initially the chapter created a scholarship fund in recognition of Link Eleanor Monroe’s significant contribution as Arlington County’s first African American school board member. The chapter selected scholarship recipients based on their academic achievement as well as potential for accomplishing their career and lifetime goals. During the leadership of President Marge White greater focus was placed on ensuring funds were available for scholarships to deserving students.

Mid-1990’s through Today.

The program has expanded since its inception. Beginning in 2009 the chapter awarded 4 year scholarships to students who maintained a 2.5 GPA. Greater than $300,000 has been awarded in scholarships. We help dreams come true for outstanding students.

In 2010 the Connecting Links (Spouses) established the first Golf Tournament to raise dollars to help maintain multiple community service programs and improve the quality of life for the women and children in Arlington and Alexandria communities. Subsequently, the Golf Tournament took on a life of its own and on September 14th, 2015 we celebrate the 6th Annual Golf Classic.

In March 2013 an endowed scholarship program was established with $25,000 and a goal to raise $100,000. The endowment will be maintained with support from the Connecting Links Annual Golf Tournament. Additionally, an HBCU scholarship was also established.

A Vital Component…Scholarships are a critical initiative for The Arlington (VA) Chapter.
