The holiday season is upon us, and for many of us, it’s the best time of the year. It’s a time for good food and fellow-ship with Family, friends and co-workers. It is also the time of year when we hang holiday lighting, fi re up our furnaces, and trav-el long distances to spend time with those friends and Family members. As we enter this holiday sea-son, please remember to protect yourselves and your Families from those avoidable accidents and incidents that have been known to claim lives dur-ing this time of year.

Before you untangle the Christmas lights and crawl up the ladder, take the time to ensure you have the proper equipment and know how to use it correct-ly. Every year people fall off ladders and overload extension cords, which can ruin the holidays for every-one. Read the warning la-bels and follow the manu-facturer’s instructions in order to dramatically re-duce risks.

The use of multiple ex-tension cords to power dec-

orative lights on the house and on a tree can create a signifi cant fi re hazard if not used properly.

And as old man winter starts creeping in, there are a few additional pre-cautions you should take in order to reduce the risk of fi re in your homes. Have your heating unit inspect-ed by a trained technician to ensure proper opera-tion.

Replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and then check to make sure they work properly. Verify you have working fi re ex-tinguishers in your home and ensure your Fami-ly knows not only where they are located, but also how to properly use them. Don’t assume it won’t hap-pen or wait for such an emergency to strike, get your Family involved and rehearse fi re drills togeth-er in your home.

Holiday and winter safety shouldn’t end in the home however; be pre-pared on the road as well. Privately owned vehicle accidents account for the majority of military fatal-

ities each year, with more traffi c accidents occurring during the holidays than at any other time.

Human error in the form of driver distrac-tions, texting, talking on cell phones, failure to wear seatbelts, excessive speed, fatigued-driving, and al-cohol consumption con-tributed to more than 33,963 fatalities on the na-tion’s highways in 2009. Drive defensively by re-maining aware of all oth-ers on the road who may be driving under these in-fl uences and distractions. And don’t be the individ-ual responsible for taking someone’s life because you failed to follow the rules of the road.

Allow plenty of travel time for inclement weath-er and ensure you have conducted a good vehicle inspection prior to depar-ture. Before you take to the highways, conduct a vehi-cle inspection to include ensuring you have working emergency equipment and lights.

For the upcoming hol-iday season and beyond, we wish the best for all of

our Soldiers, Airmen, their Families and all who stand behind them in support. Enjoy the time you have with each other during the holidays and place safety as your priority when cele-brating the season. Don’t let your Guard down. Don’t let

your Family down. Don’t let your celebration cloud your decisions.

On behalf of a grateful nation, your service is great-ly appreciated.

Happy holidays to all and best wishes for a very happy new year. You deserve it.

FORT HOOD, Texas - An Arkansas Na-tional Guard Soldier killed in action while serving in Iraq six years ago was memorial-ized at Fort Hood, Texas, Nov. 23, with the naming of one of the post’s four health clin-ics in his honor.

Sgt. Russell “Doc” Collier, a combat medic from Harrison, Ark., was killed in Taji, Iraq, on Oct. 3, 2004, while trying to save the life of a fellow Soldier who was wounded by small arms fi re. After seeing Rhode Island National Guard Staff Sgt. Christopher Potts go down to enemy fi re, Collier thrust his weapon into the hands of another and rushed forward to provide medical assistance to the troop on the ground.

Tragically, both men lost their lives that day. Collier’s unselfi sh actions under direct enemy fi re led to his own mortal wounds. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his actions.

At the time of the action, Collier was as-signed to the 39th Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s 1st Battalion, 206th Field Artillery, which is headquartered in Russellville, Ark.

“He was one of those ordinary soldiers placed in an extraordinary circumstance,” said retired Maj. Gen. Ron Chastain, former adjutant general of the Arkansas National Guard who served as commander of the 39th

Brigade at the time of the action. “He dem-onstrated the Warrior Ethos through his ac-tions. Especially the tenant, ‘I will never leave a fallen comrade.’”

Chastain, who served as the guest speak-er for the ceremony, said “There’s simply no way to overstate the quality and bravery of Sergeant Collier’s actions. Sergeant Collier is among our heroes today. His devotion to duty gives us strength and also inspires today’s Solders to serve.”

Collier had trained at Fort Hood with the 39th Brigade prior to the deployment when they served under command of the post’s 1st Cavalry Division.

This tie to the post, coupled with his val-iant effort to provide medical care to a Sol-dier in need on the battlefi eld, inspired the Darnell Army Medical Center to dedicate the health clinic in his honor. The clinic, which opened in November 2008, has assisted in over 100,000 patient encounters over the past two years.

“I know Sgt. Collier’s memory will inspire future patients, Families and staff members,” said Brig. Gen. (Dr.) Joseph Caravalho, Jr., commander of the Southern Regional Med-ical Command. “It will remind us daily of the sacrifi ces made by heroes. It will give us pause to appreciate the freedoms that we en-

ZABUL PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The Arkan-sas National Guard’s fi rst Agriculture Development Team continues to drive forward with its mission to enhance the agriculture

productivity and econom-ic status of this southern Afghanistan province.

The provided photos show progress at one of the team’s two agricultur-al demonstration farms where the team works in conjunction with the Pro-vincial Agriculture De-partment to demonstrate

improved farming tech-niques, as well as test crop seeds for resiliency to en-vironmental conditions and common pests.

With a multi-disci-plined approach – grow-ing fruit tree seedlings, greenhouse vegetables and open fi eld row-crops – the ADT is building the

demonstration farms into the focal points of agricul-ture education for the pro-vincial agriculture depart-ment.

The ADT is nearing the end of their yearlong de-ployment to Afghanistan, and will be replaced by the Arkansas Guard’s second ADT in late January 2011.

State celebrates return of Soldiers from Afghanistan

JONESBORO, Ark. – Having found and cleared more than 120 improvised explo-sive devices over a nine month deployment in Afghanistan, the Arkansas Army Nation-al Guard’s 1037th Route Clearance Company has now returned to a hero’s welcome.

A plane carrying the majority of the unit’s 200 Soldiers touched down at the Mississip-pi National Guard’s Gulfport Training Center on Nov. 1, 2010, and began the move north to Camp Shelby where they conducted their fi nal out-processing for the deployment.

Along with a warm welcome from Family, friends and a contingent of Guard leaders upon their arrival in Mis-s i s -

sippi, their home communities in Craighead County had something bigger in mind.

On Saturday, November 13, the Soldiers were honored with the belated celebration of the county’s annual Veterans Day parade in Jonesboro in order to incorporate the unit’s welcome home as part of the festivities.

Despite the day’s chilling winds, hundreds of supporters lined the streets in honor of all of our nation’s Veterans as the parade found its way through the city. As the parade came to an end, the 1037th – which marched in for-mation along with their loved ones –halted their formation in front of the grandstand to begin the celebration of their wel-come home.

Maj. Gen. William Wof-ford, the adjutant general of Arkansas addressed the crowd by saying,

“They have accom-plished their mis-sion beyond all expectations. They are to

be com-

mended for their exceptional performance of duty.

“They conducted over 622 missions over 24,000 miles of roadway,” he said. “These Sol-diers cleared 120 [Improvised Explosive De-vices] and suffered 21 detonations. They pro-duced the best IED fi nd to detonation rate of any unit within the region. They’ve got a lot to be proud of.”

As General Wofford thanked the Soldiers of the 1037th, he reminded those in atten-dance that the day was not solely about these young men.

“We say thanks to these great Warriors as we refl ect on the history of our nation and re-member ALL the men and women who have

worn the uniform of our armed forc-es and stepped forward to serve

their country,” he said. “The sacrifi ce that these Soldiers and their Families have

made obviously is not something new to this

county. It didn’t begin with this generation. This

is only the latest chapter in a long tradition of outstanding

service exemplifi ed by all of our nation’s Veterans.”
