Welcome to spring! Our near-perfect weather this time of year also sets the stage for peak season in home buying and selling. The last couple of years have been a bit of a seller’s market, with over 25% annual home appreciation in most areas of the Valley. But for 2014, the market seems to be back to a more normal balance with homes selling in an average of three to six months. As an example, in January of this year, there were just under 4,000 homes sold with 21,000 homes on the market. The last time we had a market with this type of “normal” balance was all the way back in 2003. But as January’s numbers illustrate, a normal market with a healthy inventory of homes tips the scale in favor of the buyer. If you are looking to buy a new home, you may not find a better time with this amount of inventory of homes and the low mortgage rate environment.

Ghost Towns of Arizona: Photography of Kurt WennerPueblo Grande Museum | through August 30602.495.0901 | Phoenix.govThis exhibit features over 40 photographs of Arizona ghost towns, taken by Kurt Wenner between 1996 and 2006. Though many of the places and structures in the images no longer survive, this exhibit strives to tell the story that not all history is written by people who live in big cities. People find old, abandoned places fascinating, and certainly full of questions. Why was this town built? Who lived here? Why did they leave?

Looking for the ultimate retreat after a long hot day at work? Today’s soothing master baths are becoming the ultimate in-house getaway. From spiraling snail showers to streamlined soaking tubs, your bathroom can boast all the elements of a fancy luxury spa. And the best part of all, you don’t have to leave home to enjoy it. To up the spa factor in your master bath, start by choosing luxurious materials such as white and gray marble and natural woods, as well as selecting soothing hues of whites, blues, grays, and tans. Serenity is the key to achieving that spa feeling. Allow as much natural light from windows into your bath as possible. Clean lines and uncluttered spaces reflect a feeling of relaxation. Next, consider opening up your shower stall. Today’s showers are often doorless with floors that simply slope away to a drain, no door or shower curtain required. Think multiple showerheads and wide-open, airy spaces. Steam showers will also help to ease sore muscles and help bring about relaxation. The latest trend: So-called “snail showers,” open at the ceiling showers that offer privacy via an aesthetically pleasing curved wall. You may also want to consider creating a separate water closet for the toilet, a doored space for privacy. Dual vanities with smaller storage areas for blow dryers, razors, and curling irons are also a great touch to keep your space feeling like the spa. Tubs have also changed in today’s most elegant at-home spa bathrooms. Many homeowners are replacing the large, clunky Jacuzzi tubs of the last few decades and instead choosing quiet, deeper Zen-like soaking tubs, perfect for the ultimate in relaxation. Choose a heated variety for ultimate luxury. Add some essential oils, flickering candles, and a glass of sparkling mineral water or Chenin Blanc and you’ve got the ultimate in relaxation. Of course, technology has also found its way into the bathroom. Why not maximize your time in the morning by catching up on the day’s news while prepping in the mirror? Today’s invisible televisions—TVs that pop up in bathroom mirrors—are the ultimate touch for those who want to start the day out right. Soothing tunes in the surround sound system and a built-in coffee bar and you’re all set for your morning routine without even leaving your master suite. Just don’t forget to accessorize with ultra-plush spa-like towels and super soft luxurious white robes. Now that’s relaxing!

Here in the Valley of the Sun, the only thing harder than staying cool in the sizzling summer months is staying in shape. However, your health and fitness shouldn’t take the summer off simply because temps regularly climb into the triple digits. You need to be motivated, smart and creative, by tweaking activities during the hottest days for comfort and results, but for safety as well. Schedule that tee time earlier in the morning and avoid exercising outdoors between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Love walking or running, but hate the unchanging view on a treadmill? Try to find shaded paths that keep you out of the direct sun, wear light-colored, loose fitting clothes, and don’t forget the sunscreen! Above all, it’s important to stay hydrated. Sweating depletes our body of important electrolytes, and dehydration can lead to nausea and dizziness. Whether exercising in the heat or indoors, it’s always important to listen to your body. Some activities are nicely suited for summer, like a cool dip in the pool or a neighborhood yoga class, and sometimes avoiding the heat means staying indoors altogether. You can enjoy the air-conditioned bliss of your local health club or one of Arizona’s many luxury resorts. Upscale fitness facilities make it easy to take your exercise regimen indoors. With three Valley locations (and a fourth under construction), The Village Health Clubs & Spas offer the usual

amenities, but also puts a focus on the social element. Joining “a club within a club” brings members together for their active lifestyle passion, be it hiking, swimming, tennis, and more. In addition to numerous adult wellness classes, they provide professional childcare, resort-style pools, indoor and outdoor play areas, plus organized activities to keep the kids active and healthy during summer break. After the workout it’s time to get professionally pampered at a full-service day spa. Therapeutic massage, skin care, and even a pedicure can round out the sense of wellbeing that’s so vital to our summer health and fitness routine. Stay cool and be well, Arizona!

SHRIMP MARINADE:Squeeze garlic with a garlic press and pass through to puree and remove any leftover casings. In a large stainless steel bowl, combine roasted garlic, olive oil and herb mixture with a wire whip. Place shrimp in a gallon-sized plastic bag. Pour marinade on top of shrimp. Seal the bag and shake gently to coat. Refrigerate for three hours before cooking.

DIRECTIONS:Preheat oven to 450 degrees. In a medium pot, boil two cups of water, add pasta and cook until al dente. On an oven sheet, arrange shrimp and roast in oven until fully cooked, about five to six minutes. In a sauté pan, cook garlic and tomatoes in olive oil. Then add white wine, garlic and lemon and crush the tomatoes. Once the garlic sauce comes to a boil, add butter and season with kosher salt and white pepper. Reduce sauce and add pasta to allow it to absorb some of the flavor from the sauce, about 15 minutes. Remove lemon wedge from pasta mixture and add spinach and herb mix then toss to combine. Place the pasta mixture on a plate and rub the tops of the shrimp in the leftover marinade. Shingle them on top of pasta with the tails facing down. Garnish the dish with crumbled goat cheese.
