ARCHITECTUREThe Architecture Program concentrates on the built environment.The curriculum visualizes architecture as a cultural, creative, andtechnical practice and discipline with direct social impact. A balance ofarchitectural, art and technical design courses provides students with adiverse foundation of knowledge in the fields of architecture, landscapearchitecture, urban planning, CAD, and CGI which prepares them fortransfer and/or certificates for careers in a wide range of fields. Studentsmay earn an associate of science degree in architecture, a certificatein architectural design and/or a certificate on Computer Aided Design(CAD).

Learning Outcomes

This discipline prepares students to do the following:

• Describe effective architectural, Computer Generated Imagery (CGI)and drafting techniques including graphic communication of designand technical drawings, orientation of design and technical drawings,and the decision making process for design and technical drawings.

• Estimate time, material, labor and equipment required for thisexpertise.

• Demonstrate planning techniques and administration of architectural,Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) and document control for designand technical working drawings.

• Prepare for the rigors of research required by a four-year institutionthrough research assignments, slide identification, and museumpapers.

• Recognize how society world views influence visual arts and arthistory traditions in order to demonstrate an individual’s ability to

draw conclusions based upon philosophical considerations andan understanding of how one can influence his/her immediatecommunity, increase awareness of one’s personal impact upon thatcommunity, and the documentation of findings.

• Implement current computer software as tools to further  the creationof art and utilization of the Internet as a research and broadcastvehicle for the reinforcement, development, application and/orimprovement of computer related and research skills.

• Demonstrate competency in all levels of visual arts and art historyfrom introductory to advanced.

Introducingarchitecture and environmental design majors to design fundamentals,stressing a basic vocabulary of 2-D and 3-D design and design processin an atmosphere of discovery and creativity. Introduction to theexamination of aesthetic, symbolic, and cultural elements.

ARCH 102Visual Communication2.5 Units (AA/AS; CSU)36 lecture hours, 36 lab hoursEquivalent to: DRAF 102, DRAF 158Grade Mode: Standard LetterStrongly recommended: DRAF 101; ENGL 101.Visual communication of 2-D and 3-D forms and functions are exploredusing sketching, drawing, and 2-D and 3-D software. Using 2-D and 3-Dsoftware, natural and man-made forms are analyzed. Color and textureof form are studied as they are revealed by light, shade, and shadow.Students' perceptions of subject matter are translated into convincingvisual expressions by learning the graphic skills and the use of a varietyof media. Students sketch, draw and render projects.

ARCH 110Introduction to Design Fundamentals and Communication4 Units (AA/AS; CSU)54 lecture hours, 54 lab hoursEquivalent to: DRAF 151Grade Mode: Standard LetterStrongly recommended: ARCH 100; ENGL 101.Introduction to architectural design fundamentals, stressing a basicvocabulary of 2-D and 3-D design and design process in an atmosphere ofdiscovery and creativity. Projects will focus on perception, visualization,representation, and expression as well as an introduction to theexamination of aesthetic, symbolic, and cultural elements. Studentsanalyze and apply architectural theory, principles, techniques and modelmaking. The course includes an examination of presentation types andhow they can be utilized to communicate architectural ideas.

The coursefocuses on drawing and model construction as a means to seeing andunderstanding. The course includes exploration of the design processand the formal and spatial language of architecture as well as use ofcase studies. This course provides students with a analysis of materialapplications and the fundamental knowledge of methods of construction.

ARCH 200Portfolio Preparation3 Units (AA/AS; CSU)45 lecture hours, 36 lab hoursEquivalent to: DRAF 149Grade Mode: Standard LetterStrongly recommended: ARCH 110 & ARCH 111 or ART 111 & ART 120;ENGL 101.A course for students to develop individual student portfolios.Development of portfolios will include architectural Computer GeneratedImagery (CGI), multimedia, other design technology techniques, free handdrawing, 2D-3D art and rendering. Students will develop knowledge ofhow to interview in various design professions.

ARCH 201Architectural Design I4 Units (AA/AS; CSU; UC)54 lecture hours, 54 lab hoursEquivalent to: DRAF 153Grade Mode: Standard LetterPrerequisite(s): ARCH 110.Exploration of design and architectural basic elements. Develop theprocess of architectural design with an emphasis on two and threedimensional communication techniques. Basic design exercises focusingon simple buildings and their relationship to site and program. Exploresthe tools required to begin the formulation of design concepts andstructure. This exploration is supported by discussion, observations, andhands-on experimentation, including research of precedents. The goal isto develop a process of design that draws from many sources in orderto solidify a concept. Craftsmanship, clarity, and eloquence are highlyvalued in the construction of design submittals and in written and verbalpresentations. A portfolio of the assigned design exercises completes thecourse requirements.

ARCH 202Architectural Design II4 Units (AA/AS; CSU; UC)36 lecture hours, 72 lab hoursEquivalent to: DRAF 154Grade Mode: Standard LetterPrerequisite(s): ARCH 110.Strongly recommended: DRAF 101.Basic design exercises focus on buildings and their relationship to siteand design process using simple programs, the influence of context,introducing sustainability and environmental constraints. Studentsanalyze and incorporate environmental site factors, simple programrequirements and basic knowledge of building materials. The designprocess of sustainability, climate and lighting issues are incorporated asintegral components of an architectural design solution. A portfolio of theassigned design exercises completes the course requirements.

Explore architectural basicconstruction materials, methods of construction, properties, assemblyand fabrication. Examine various architecture by focusing on its buildingmaterials and structural systems as they relate to design concepts.Review the basic types of governmental regulatory constraints thatarchitects must understand to design a building. Analyze structuralforces affecting buildings. Examine in depth the sequential processes ofconstructing a building.

ARCH 250History of Architecture: Prehistory to Mannerism3 Units (AA/AS; Citrus C1; CSU; IGETC 3A; IGETC 3B; UC; CSUGE C1;CSUGE C2)54 lecture hoursGrade Mode: Standard LetterStrongly recommended: ENGL 101.Development of architecture from Prehistory, ancient Egypt, ancientGreece, Rome to the Mannerism period. Influence of geography, religionand socio-economic movements on architecture are explored. The role ofa built environment in social, cultural, and political life: how buildings areconstructed, what they mean, effects they have on the world, and waysthey imagine new futures and shape private and public life. This coursespotlights new possibilities for shaping the world in which we live, with anemphasis on how architecture extends to cities, roads, books and films.Consideration is given to historical context and cultural genealogy ofparticular buildings and environments, material and economic conditionsof buildings and more.
